Highlands, North Carolina is at the top of my list of weekend retreats, especially during the summer. It is a very easy drive from our home in Atlanta, and yet a world away. The mountain air is generally about 20 degrees cooler than Atlanta in the summertime and is the perfect climate for some of the best golf in the world. Highlands has some of the most diverse and abundant plant life in North America, and if you need some cocktail conversation starter while there then you should know that it is technically a rainforest. At the center of Highlands lies one of our favorite places to stay. Old Edwards Inn was originally built by John Norton in 1878, and was run locally by various owners for well over a century. In 2001 it was purchased by Art and Angela Williams who initially invested over $50 million to turn a tired old hotel into a world-class resort. Their vision was to share Highlands with the world. This plan was met with a lot of push back from the local community who wanted to keep Highlands special. In the end, the Williamses have created an internationally recognized resort and, in my opinion, have made Highlands even more special. I had the chance to sit down with Art while we were in town, and I am thankful for that opportunity. It turned out Art and Angela (high school sweethearts) grew up not 30 minutes from my hometown in South Georgia. Small world. It is worth a google to learn about his business success and philosophy,
but the most striking thing that he told me was that he likes to look at every employee and customer as if they have a sign around their neck that says “make me feel special.” There is no question that his kind and generous mindset has taken root at Old Edwards. When the staff noticed our 16-month old daughter walking up with us, they ran back inside to grab her a stuffed animal to take home. They also brought me one of their signature Dove ice cream bars. That is just the type of place Old Edwards is. It makes you feel like you are being hosted by old friends. A special thank you is owed to Angela and Art Williams, and to Jack Austin and his amazing team for their hospitality. I also can’t forget our great friend James Farmer for connecting all the dots.
