Q&A//3D Na’Tee onwaxmag.com

» by URAL GARRETT

3D NA’TEE @3dnatee 3D Na’tee is a classic MC that’s singlehandedly transcended today’s era of New Orleans Hip-Hop. In fact, she’s more New Orleans Hip-Hop than Lil Wayne depending on who you talk to.

Yes, it’s quite obvious that she’s attractive but her rhymes are anything but. No dreadful singing nor EDM (Electronic Dance Music) influenced gimmicks, just clever wordplay and tactical delivery that resonates after the last rhyme is spit. There isn’t a better example than last year’s release of The Coronation. Sure the mixtape missed some highly anticipated production features with Timbaland but that didn’t stop the “Queen of the Solar System” of course. Did we mention her clean sweep of the New Orleans Hip Hop Awards two years in a row? In this exclusive On Wax speaks with the “Diva” about the making of her most recent mixtape The Coronation, her status as New Orleans most popular upand-comer and her knack for video directing.

For the first time in my career I can say that I’m making a living solely off music. Some years back I was selling drugs to pay my bills. Now because of what I have been doing independently, I am being contacted to do shows from New Orleans, to Houston, to Detroit and beyond. I’m getting paid for verses, etcetera.”

DEE-1 @DEE1MUSIC

Best known for his “I Hope They Hear Me” volume mixtapes, 2011 hit song and video “Jay, 50, & Weezy”, and appearances on MTV all help put him on a national stage.

Through all of his success rapper Dee-1, born David Augustine Jr., is working on consistency. The New Orleans native’s new mixtape Psalms of David. is being released on Feb. 20. He’s “leaking” his first single “Only God Can Judge Me” from “Psalms of David”. Dee-1 has recently been on a sold out nationwide tour with his mixtape “The Focus Tape”. His uplifting musical content separates him from other rappers in the industry. Dee-1 works late into the night and talks to On Wax on a 11 p.m. phone interview about his future plans and his thoughts on finally signing to a major label.

People who don’t understand me try to pour salt into what I’m doing. They’d see me do a song with somebody that’s perceived as a gangster rapper or street rapper and they’d turn around and see me do a song with someone considered as a Christian artists and they’d try to figure out or they’d wonder how can I do it. They don’t understand it or understand my mission.”

Q&A//Marcel P. Black onwaxmag.com

» by Ural Garrett

MARCEL P BLACK @MARCELPBLACK

The city of Baton Rouge, known more for it’s localized trap style of Lil Boosie and Webbie has a new MC that’s more aligned with Chuck D than Pimp C. His name is Marcel P. Black.

Born and raised in Oklahoma, he would make a move to the Red Stick town after getting accepted to Southern University. While the city championed the sounds of Trill Entertainment, Black would help usher in a new era of Baton Rouge MCs who lend more to socially conscious themes and Golden Era sounds.

So I get radio play on online stations and college/non commercial stations, which is fine because my music is getting right to my intended audience.”

He’s making progress. Turk hasn’t slowed down one bit after spending almost a decade in prison. In the months after the rapper’s release he’s formed his new label, Young N Thuggin (YNT), dropped his first project upon release a free mixtape, Blame It On The System, and is currently writing his first book, The AutoThugography of Turk, due for a late summer release. “I’m one of the chosen ones. What the devil meant for bad, put me out the industry, sending me away, God meant it for good. Because look at me now I’m full of wisdom. I’m young and thuggin’. I still keep it streets. Ain’t nothing changed about me but my attitude. I’m drug free. I’m more family oriented. I go to the zoo. I go to the museum. I spend time with my wife. I rub her stomach. She’s pregnant with twins right now. We’re expecting those real soon, in about 90 days. Everything’s moving real fast in my life right now,” says Turk. Blame It On The System features artists Gunplay, his former Hot Boy members –Juvenile, BG, and Lil Wayne – Christian Radke, UNLV and more. To promote the mixtape he dropped the video in February to the hit song “Closer To My Dream” featuring fellow New Orleans native, Radke. The rapper talks about an unjust penile system, how the black community is deceived and how “They turn families against families.” The mixtape has received over 39,000 listens on datpiff.com and 92,000 mixtape views on livemixtapes.com.

my own label (YNT). When a major label do come they gotta cut a big check. I think it’s better for you to do things on your own especially when you’ve been on the scene. You know what to do. You don’t just go with somebody because they got money. My whole thing is longevity and building a foundation and an empire. I can’t do that with somebody else. I’ve learned to do things on my own as an independent artist and an independent label.” Turk should know. At the height of his life Tab Virgil, Jr., famously traded bars with Lil Wayne on “I Need A Hot Girl”. A verse on the Hot Boys 1999 Billboard hit song – a spot saved for the end of the song and it became the highlight. His part was the part everybody in the club rapped along to when the song played. In the video he was but a boy, skin and bones, wearing the original Cash Money diamond encrusted medallion, an over-sized hoodie and jeans. The group’s hits included: “We On Fire” “Bling Bling” “Shine” “Rich Ni**as”. Nothing but raw talent carried him along the likes of Juvenile, B.G. and Lil’ Wayne. They were hungry, youthful. They represented the hood. They were the perfect rap group. Now, almost a decade later, at 31, Turk’s put on weight, wearing the build of a grown man, his voice is deeper and he doesn’t wear the amount of bling he used to wear. His flow is still the same Southern drawl with quick fire words and he still hangs a little bit on the ends of his words in his rhymes which he showcased on “Zip It” with Lil’ Wayne on his new mixtape.

“I plan to make as much buzz and noise for myself with READ THE FULL INTERVIEW onwaxmag.com 23 | SPRING 2013 | on WAX - THE #1 INTERACTIVE MUSIC MAgazine

Mara Shalhoup’s book entitled BMF: The Rise and Fall of Big Meech and The Black Mafia Family, details the true story of two brothers who went from small town drug dealers to running a multi-million dollar cocaine empire. The most talked about aspect of BMF is Demetrius “Big Meech” Flenory, notorious drug lord and urban legend.
