Executive
summary
In a few weeks time, we will be graduated. Before starting to work, we think this is the right moment to live an out-of-the-ordinary experience. This is the reason why we have developed the “onWHEELS” project, that combines: -
Our passion for sport
a one-year’s bike world tour
-
Our skills acquired during our education
-
Our care about the world around us
an architecture survey a support to “Mekong Plus”
Our leitmotiv will be to open ourselves as much as possible: new countries, new ideas, new ways of thinking. We are convinced that being confronted with all those new things will help us a lot in our future life. Of course, we need some money to realize our project. In this document you will find a description of each of the 3 aspects of “onWHEELS”. We hope that it will convince you of our motivation and commitment. We are truly persuaded that your company will benefit from supporting “onWHEELS”. First of all, the 3 aspects of the project present synergies with each other and will involve a lot of people. Secondly, it is our intention to communicate as much as we can about our project, as we think that the more we share our experience, the more it will be rewarding for us. For these two reasons, your company will benefit from increased visibility in exchange of supporting us. You will find more information about it at page 10. The visionary architect Luc Schuiten will guide us all along our project and “onWHEELS” will be covered in the media of the group “La Libre Belgique” during the whole year. So now, we hope that you too, will decide to join us. Julien Bertrand, Loïc Nys, Christophe Petit & Frédéric Timmermans

1. Introduction a. Who are we? Four soon-graduated students in architecture and business engineering ... forming a trilingual and multi-community team ... willing to open up to new horizons before entering the professional world
Julien
Loïc
Christophe
At 22, Julien has just graduated in architecture from UCL-LOCI/Brussels, having written his thesis about the architectural image. Willing to learn more about sustainable architecture, Julien will bring to the team his skills in drawing and photography. He considers this project as an opportunity to approach architecture and the world in an unconventional way. Julien has already had the opportunity to travel a few weeks around Europe and India and he feels ready to start this world tour. Meeting new people, sharing experience and living an out-of-the ordinary experience are the leitmotives of this young man of good cheer.
Loïc is 24 year old and will soon graduate as an architect. Always ready to take on challenges, this project is for him a way to combine his love for sport and his concern for social and environmental questions. That the onWHEELS project contributes to reduce the gap between the richest and the poorest in this world is thus very important for him. He is also very motivated to broaden his knowledge about sustainable architecture, a topic that links man and technique. With a strong team spirit, Loïc is very curious and easy-going and likes to interact with people he doesn’t know. Thanks to several bike trips across Europe, Loïc is also the most experienced about biking.
Christophe, 22, will soon graduate as a business engineer from Solvay (SBS-EM). Deeply interested in environmental matters, he is now writing his thesis about the industrial policy of China in the field of photovoltaic solar energy. Above all, this world tour is something he wants to share and for this reason he counts on your generosity to support Mekong Plus. Having lived in Thailand, Vietnam and Taiwan, Christophe is eager to discover new cultures. Having been scout leader, he enjoys being part of a team and is used to find solutions to the most tricky situations. As the only non-architect of the team, he is in charge of the budget and thus for this sponsorship file !
Frédéric is 22 and will graduate this year in architecture at Sint-Lucas Gent. Convinced that one of the most important current responsibilities of architecture is sustainability, this world tour will enable him to approach this problematic in the field. Frédéric is persuaded that travelling, thanks to the confrontation with new matters, is the best way to learn and exchange. Frédéric already took part to humanitarian projects, such as volunteering for the refugees of the earthquake in L’ Aquila, Italy, which has given him the taste of adventure and team spirit.

b. Why cycling? Apart from enjoying biking, the bike seems to us the best means to discover the world. At a pace of around 80 km per day, it allows us to see quite a bit of the world in one year, while not going to fast in order to have the time to watch landscapes and meet people.
+ An ecological way of travelling + Allowing to meet people easily + Bringing us in the heart of the countries + A healthy means of transport

2. What
is our project
?
We are encouraged in our undertaking by Luc Schuiten, Belgian “guru” of sustainable architecture. We would like to thank him for the meetings we have had with him and for his support, advice and ideas.
a. The challenge of a world tour On September 30th, we will leave the Cinquantenaire in Brussels with our bikes, in the direction of the West, with the goal of being back on August 20th in 2013 coming from the East. In other words, we plan to accomplish a world tour by bike across Europe, South America, Oceania and Asia.

b. The support to Mekong Plus Since the beginning of the project, all the team has wished to support an NGO. This willingness comes from two reasons. 1) Multi-actors’ project We do not want to keep our experience for ourselves. We reckon it will be much more rewarding if we share it with as many people as possible. In other words, we do something special and we want to make others benefit from it. 2) Humanitarian motivation We know that we are very lucky to have the opportunity to travel around the world for one year. In particular, we will cross regions where poverty is rampant. Our opinion is that it is a duty for humanity to solve this situation of global imbalance and we want to bring our contribution to it. To attain these two goals, we have decided to support Mekong Plus. This NGO is active in the Mekong delta (Vietnam) and in Cambodia, with the objective of fostering the development of these very poor regions. Each year 170,000 people benefit directly from Mekong Plus’ programs of microcredit, education, agriculture, health, environment and employment. As we will be riding through the Mekong delta and Cambodia, we will have the opportunity to learn about how Mekong Plus carries out its actions and to visit some of the families Mekong Plus is supporting. At the same time, this will enable us to draw some interesting synergies with our architecture study. In concrete terms, half of the money we will gather from our sponsors will be intended to Mekong Plus’ projects, while the other half will serve to finance our bike world tour. You can find this commitment in the sponsoring contract in appendix of this file. We have decided with Mekong Plus that the funds gathered will serve to finance the NGO’s projects directed to the poorest fraction of the population. Indeed, even if Vietnam’s rapid growth has enabled to pull many people out of poverty, there is still today 10% of the population that lives with less than 0.5€/day. The programs of Mekong Plus that we will support make it possible for 2 to 3 households to come out of this extreme poverty each day.

c. The architecture survey While building on our skills in analysis and architecture, we want to take advantage from the fact that we are going to cross a lot of different countries to carry out a study around architecture. Therefore, under the guidance of professors in architecture and environmental economics (see infra), we have developed an architecture survey. We are going to collect real data regarding sustainable architecture and building materials all around the world and analyze the environmental impact of architectural techniques and materials that we will meet on our route.
MEANS + Elaboration of a scientific model to analyze and compare buildings + Meetings with architects, builders and other professionnals around the world + Photography and drawings + Personal skills acquired during our education GOALS
Explore and share new ways to build sustainably Rediscover traditional building techniques and materials that can answer the modern questions of ecology and sustainability We plan to focus on specific kinds of buildings :
Environmentally friendly projects We are currently identifying a number of projects on our itinerary that stand out in terms of their use of innovative architectural materials and techniques. For instance, the Paille-Tech project in Namur and the projects of Anna Heringer in Bangladesh.
Common buildings and housing Since we will most of the time spend the night at local people’s home in rural areas of developing countries, we have a great opportunity to collect data about the materials and techniques used locally by the people. Meanwhile, we will keep our eyes and minds open to the environments we will meet. Sustainability can hide behind unexpected corners.
7
The findings of our work will be published on our website in the course of our world tour. The use of modern media like videos will take an important part in delivering our results. Moreover, our goal is to report about our findings in architectural magazines (e.g. A+ and EcologiK) and/or through an exhibition at CIVA (Centre International pour la Ville, l’Architecture et le Paysage). Finally, a book and a film will be produced that would retrace the whole project.
To achieve our ambitions, we have the full
support of teachers from our universities : - Estelle Cantillon Ph. D. in Economics, Harvard; FNRS Senior Research Associate, ECARES, Université Libre de Bruxelles ; Member of the Scientific Committee of the Belgian Observatory for Energy ; Professor of “Topics in Environmental Economics” (ULB). - Paul Robbrecht Founder of the Robbrecht and Daem architecture agency in 1975 and member of the Centro Palladio in Vicenza in 1980. He taught at KASK Ghent, at HSLI Ghent and at the AA school in London. He is a Royal Institute of British Architects international fellow. He is now teacher in Master 2 at Sint Lucas Architecture Ghent.
- Christine Fontaine Teacher in Master 1 at UCL-LOCI Bruxelles (faculté d’Architecture, d’Ingénierie architecturale et d’Urbanisme). Also responsible for international exchange.
Of course, we will also be able to count on the guidance of our sponsor Luc Schuiten. Being a visionary architect and draughtsman, he focuses on the link of architecture with the environment and the integration of nature in architecture. His work, for instance his book “vers une cité végétale”, will help us develop our study.

4. What
do we offer you
?
Our goal is to communicate as much as possible about our project and to make as many people as possible participate in it. For this reason, we can ensure great visibility for your brand in return for your sponsorship. Here is a non exhaustive list of the channels on which your sponsorship would be highlighted.
Presence in the media : Next to articles in La Libre Belgique for the departure and during the world tour (Libre Immo), we will hold a blog on lalibre.be and every week of our travel we will be interviewed on the radio station Twizz. We will also appear in the Solvay Alumni newsletter and magazine, as well as on the website and social media pages of the ULB. Moreover, the ultimate goal of our research project is to report about our findings in architectural magazines and trough an exhibition, a book or conferences.
On Mekong Plus’ & onWHEELS’ websites: Mekong Plus is a reputed NGO in Belgium (its last fund raising campaign brought €100,000). Its president is Dominique Moorkens, Alcopa’s CEO, and Mekong Plus is already supported by many succesful Belgian companies. As a result, 50 people visit each day Mekong Plus’ website. For our website, we are confident that by regularly updating it, quite some people will follow us. Moreover, to attract more people on it, our Twitter account and Facebook fan page will report about the updates and provide links to the website.
Banners at our party and at our departure: we will organize a farewell party where your company would be made visible if you choose to support us. For our departure at the Cinquantenaire, we plan to invite our friends and the media. You could also place a banner there to increase your exposure among young people.
Worldwide presence on our bikes and our clothes : by putting stickers on our bikes and saddlebags or by printing the logo of your company on some of our clothes, you will accompany us in our world tour and increase your brand awareness across countries all around the globe, through the people we will meet, but also through the pictures we will take and put on our website.
Your logo on our leaflet : To present our project, we are distributing around us an explaining leaflet on which the logo of our partners will be printed.
