Jojo’s Bangkra ‘Sow your Passion’
At Jojo’s Bangkra we create the most stylish fabric tote bags and accessories for all life’s adventures … so you can ‘Sow your Passion’. The idea for Jojo’s Bangkra was born out of a desire to see more handcrafted fabric bags in the leisure market that incorporated some of the traditional craft methods used in the past. We are passionate about our craft and lovers of ‘fabric bags’. We love weaving and mixing different fabric colours, textures, sewing methods, painting techniques and fashioning them into wearable works of art. Our designs are influenced by the beauty and complexity of the islands as we explore picturesque countryside and comb craggy shorelines cataloging their unique elements to then represent them in our products. We believe in sustainable practices and support the preservation of traditional craft methods handed down through the ages. We are happy to be able to offer such a product to you our fellow ‘fabric bag’ lovers to express your passion. Life offers endless possibilities, ‘Sow your Passion’ whatever it may be and soar!

Visual Comparison One People! Africans
After visiting Ghana and Africa for the first time it was amazing to see how similar Ghana was to Jamaica. Ghana Year of the Return
The Kromanti Language of the Jamaican Maroons Jamaicanlanguageunit
This video documents the disappearing languages of the Eastern Maroons of Moore Town, Jamaica. The languages are (i) Kromanti, a language variety related to the Akan language cluster of West Africa, and (ii) Uol Taim Patwa or ‘Maroon Spirit Language’, a very archaic form of English-lexicon Creole, similar in many ways to the Creole languages of Suriname. The language is presented through Mr Isaac Bernard, one the last culture bearers of the community, with a good command of these languages. The video is part of the Caribbean Indigenous and Endangered Languages website, which is cosponsored by the Jamaican Language Unit/Unit for Caribbean Language Research, University of the West Indies, Mona, and UNESCO. http://www.caribbeanlanguages.org.jm

he story of the Jamaican Maroons, Africans who refused to live in slavery, is little known outside that Caribbean country. Their unwillingness to accept the yoke of the colonial slave masters made them unique among the Africans brought in bondage to the Americas. In the mountains and jungles of Jamaica, they earned for themselves an autonomy never before seen by Africans in the New World. It is night in the Blue Mountains. The year is 1734. There is no noise save the occasional hoot of an owl or the shriek of a bat enjoying its evening feast. A visitor might think the place uninhabited, but this is a warrior’s camp – Maroon soldiers and look outs are posted along every ridge, high up in the trees, behind every shadow. They are cloaked in darkness and covered in branches, hiding among the lush foliage. A few hours before morning approaches, we hear the tramp-tramptramp of black British boots on Maroon soil – the British soldiers, in their bright red uniforms and big black boots, with their loud laughter and disregard for their environment, are a stark contrast to the Maroon soldiers. Jamaica National Hero, was an 18th-century leader of the Jamaican Credit: Black Women Radicals on Twitter Maroons. Much of what is known about her comes from oral history, as little textual evidence exists. She was born into the Asante people in what is today Ghana, and escaped from slavery after being transported to Jamaica. In 1739–40, the British government in Jamaica recognized that it could not defeat the Maroons, so they came to an agreement with them instead. At first, the treaties only recognised Cudjoe’s Town (Trelawny Town) and Crawford’s Town. But after the destruction of Crawford’s Town in the 1750s, the Maroons were located in five main towns: Accompong, Trelawny Town, Moore Town (formerly known as New Nanny Town), Scott’s Hall and Charles Town, living under their own rulers and a British supervisor known as a superintendent. In exchange, they were asked to agree not to harbour new runaway slaves, but rather to help catch them. This last clause in the treaty caused a split between the Maroons and the rest of the black population. Another provision of the agreement was that the Maroons would serve to protect the island from invaders.

Reading Between The Lines by David Clarke
The Gospel of Disney, Pixar, Ghibli, and DreamWorks
L
ook, up in the sky! Is it a bird? Is it a plane? This is a film genre that’s taken over mainstream Hollywood and multiplex culture faster than a single bullet!
Animation movies have graced the big screens for decades now, in a multibillion-dollar industry created through powerhouses like Disney, Pixar and DreamWorks. Its influences have shaped the way we entertain the family, particularly the children, so it’s no wonder that these movies are the inner workings of subliminal, hidden messages that tells a story itself – if you read between the lines.
Our fluffy, loveable, huggable, supercool, mystic-type alien-friends are much more than meets the eye. In a world set with magic, sorcery, wizards and witches, I’d say their agenda was a little greater than ‘finding a friend’ like Woody from Toy Story or Stitch from the movie Lilo & Stitch. ‘And no marvel, for Satan himself is transformed into an angel of light’ (2 Corinthians 11:14). As I’ve previously written, God’s word in the Bible is always being played out using character roles and themes that depict biblical scenes and prophecies, with an exhortation to good and evil. Here are a few examples: In the sequel of Trolls World Tour, six troll tribes represent a different style of music, scattered over six different lands, using six magical strings held by each tribe that powers their specific kind of music. Now, if that doesn’t bring you to attention, then I don’t know what will. The Monsters Inc monsters exchange their world for our world via a child’s closet door, (the mind) and are energised from the fear they put into children. In Frozen, Elsa, the self-proclaimed snow queen, possesses magical powers that do more harm than good. Maleficent, who is loosely based on the wicked fairy godmother from ‘Sleeping Beauty’, is a witch portrayed as good rather than evil. And of course, there can be none other than the young wizard himself, Harry Potter, who devises spells, summons evil spirits and performs rituals where magic is a supernatural force that can be used to override the natural laws of nature. ‘For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against
powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places’ (Ephesians 6:12). Unfortunately, these desired characters all show signs of occultism and darkness presented as an art form and marketed as viewing pleasure and entertainment for adults and children alike. This is a clever deceptive tool used to condition the minds of the youth to bring satanic practices to normality and alter their moral standards for adulthood. Magic, sorcery and witchcraft are forbidden by God in the Bible, (Deuteronomy 18:9-14). And if it’s not of God, then it is not from God. ‘Take no part in the unfruitful works of darkness, but instead, expose them’ (Ephesians 5:11). However, on the contrary, these movies also show the very essence of God, which is love. In Monsters Inc., the young girl loves one of the monsters, despite its multiple efforts to get rid of her. This type of underserving love causes the monster’s heart to change. ‘We love because he first loved us’ (1 John 4:19). Love is the single most powerful force, more powerful than fear and intimidation. Besides, the ramifications of the young girl’s love for the monster does not end with him but also converts the fear factor into a joy factor because joy is more powerful than fear, because love is more powerful than intimidation. Scripture tells us, ‘There is no fear in love. But perfect love drives out fear because fear has to do with punishment. The one who fears is not made perfect in love’ (1 John 4:18). In the hit movie Moana, she answers her calling to restore the heart of Te Fiti, who is possessed with a volcanic demon and demonstrates that love conquers all, as in 1 Corinthians 13:4-7. Even Harry’s not just into magic. He is the saviour of his people, he wanders in the wilderness where he’s lured by temptation, and in the end [SPOILER ALERT] he dies to save those people — and is resurrected. As parents, we might be stirred by the content of these animation movies that encourages disobedience, hypersexuality, magic, sorcery and more, but we can rest assured that ‘the light always shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not understood it’ (John 1:5).

utterfly Magazine is produced in collaboration with Onyx Television Network. But who or what is Onyx? For that we need to go on a journey that starts on the platform of Earls Court Station, London looking at this billboard: My initial thought was about the cuteness of the child but as I stared at the image I wondered what was the child thinking. This is what came to my mind, “those jewels belong to me” and this

started me on a journey that is not yet complete. At the same time that this was happening, I was embarking on my PhD; my research TV Drama and Caribbean Families. In particular, I was highlighting the lack of Black agency in British period dramas. My question was, and still is, why have we been

systematically excluded from British History except for slavery and the Windrush debacle? That lead me to put my MA Television Scriptwriting to use by writing a TV series called, Invisible, which finds a 21st century way to put 300 Black people back where they belong in British History. I pitched to mainstream media. They politely declined. I was not deterred; the lesson learned is to do it yourself. I am determined that we must produce our stories. We have the talent, creativity and the resources if we collaborate. It was at this point I revisited my PhD research and asked the question, how can Black people own a television network in the UK?
Beverley
Vertical Integration and Collaboration are two critical components needed to establish a network. Vertical integration means we control the process from conception to broadcast. Collaboration requires that, as Black people, we give up our individualism and learn to trust each other to build an entity that will be beneficial for everybody. Let me say this is the biggest hurdle. After I presented the concept at the launch of an Entrepreneurial club set up by a progressive church I was flooded with enthusiastic people all saying, “We need this”, “It’s about time”, “Sign me up”, but only one person came forward and said, “Let us collaborate and make it work”. Marvin This was a young man, Marvin Osemwegie, a social worker, photographer and videographer and an entrepreneur. It was the oddest partnership, not discouraged by the generation gap, which works like a dream. ONYX TELEVISION NETWORK LIMITED was born. We wrote the business plan, hired a financial consultant, and prepared our pitch.
Onyx Television Network’s mission.
There are approx.1.85 million Black British people in the UK whose interests are not served by the mainstream media. We are not solely for Black people, because we are inclusive, but the Black voice will be united through Black people living in the Diaspora, African, and Caribbean voices. We aim to provide a multi-channel, multi-platform that will provide original programmes, across all genres that will give us an authentic voice. The network will cost £80,000 to develop, build, trial and test over six months. We want to attract investors but we also want to show that we are proactive, innovative, and serious and BUTTERFLY MAGAZINE was born. Both Marvin and I have studied film, TV, or media and together we had the experience to make the magazine and the television network a success. We are still working in our day jobs, even through the lockdown, and use that money to fund the magazine. We have a growing band of contributors, from around the world, who continue to give of their time and energy to help get BUTTERFLY MAGAZINE out each week. We thank them. In these times when people are risk-averse, after all, we work too hard for the little money we have, to give it away on some hair brain scheme, it is heartwarming to find people who share the vision and are bold enough to step out in faith. We are recruiting advertising sales executives to sell space in the magazine and the website. To date, we are in over 40 countries. We know that the link we send out every week gets resent, at least four times, and expands our reach. Our goal with Butterfly Magazine is to earn the £80,000 to build an app, which may take 6 months to trial and test. In the meantime we are seeking investors to collaborate with us to the tune of £1.7m to buy buildings and land to establish ONYX TELEVISION STUDIOS, recruit staff, purchase content and to start production out of London. t the start of the confinement, Edward Boucher thought it was important to connect with the Jamaican Diaspora in France because of the potential psychological effects such a difficult situation could have on them and especially given the fact that many are so far from family and friends. He was quickly joined by Nazila, a communication specialist and entertainer, who was seduced by the idea. After a few meetings via Zoom, the structured concept was born.

The show was well-received by the Jamaican community and the idea to assist Jamaicans living all over the world became a reality. The show has grown beyond the borders of France with Jamaicans tuning in from The United States of America, Great Britain, French Guiana, Guadeloupe, Netherlands and Columbia. The show is aired on Saturdays at 8pm and includes special appearances, highlighting the work of members of the diaspora, discussions, interactive quizzes, musical performances and interesting facts and information. One feature of the show, is the prizes that can be won from the quizzes. Winners are able to send their family members in Jamaica telephone topup credits or send groceries to a loved one in Jamaica who is in need. Edward and Nazila initially sponsored these prizes from their pockets, however, other members of the diaspora community also have started to help with the donations. The VMBS group that was featured on the programme, also contributed a number of prizes. They answered a plethora of questions from the Jamaican and nonJamaican viewers about investment and savings opportunities in Jamaica. The show was also responsible for producing this collage encouraging social distancing. The uncertainty of flights, food and housing are the main challenges that have arisen since the lockdown in France. The show seeks to alleviate these problems by creating an outlet to share their voices and concerns and to help in whatever ways possible. Prize donations can be made to the show via thecocoeddieshow@gmail.com or via Paypal at thecocoeddieshow.

Hajara Hussaini Alfa
Twin Passions of Pharmaceutical Science And Social Welfare
D
r Hajara Hussaini Alfa’s twin passions of Pharmaceutical Science and social welfare have shaped her career throughout her life. After completing her PhD in Natural Product Chemistry using Nigerian-sourced herbs grown in her country’s north, she has turned her attention to tackling inequality within Nigeria’s youth through the PAVE Project. This bold initiative aims to alleviate the poverty of young Nigerians and empower them through education in the burgeoning field of youth-football. WHY PAVE?
Growing up surrounded by the noisy clamour of my cousins, siblings and close neighbours, dreaming of becoming a professional footballer was a sweet standard for them all. Inspired by other African heroes like Jay-jay Okocha and Daniel Amokachi who had risen above their humble origins to break into the glorious Premiership and La Liga leagues in Europe, these talented boys ran all day in the dust, using tin cans for goalposts and treasuring their faded club shirts.
erations of footballers from the hidden traps that await these inexperience dreamers, helping them to navigate their paths to success and secure safer passage for those that come after them. Our goal is to transparently provide support to African` fresh talent at football clubs around the world. Help us to realise this dream. The PAVE website is a one-stop source of information about the project’s aims and achievements to-date in place of face-to-face networking meetings prohibited by the COVID-19 lockdown. Our business approach involves selecting players based on merit for scholarships to study at one of our partner Universities while being hosted by PAVE-associated football clubs Click for in the UK, Europe, UAE, Qatar so far. Website THE PROBLEM
The stark reality of this dream is that many are scouted for teams abroad but have no support system or guidance counsellors to help them make sense of the professional offers they receive. With not a clue of the terms of their contracts, these hapless youth fall victim to exploitation and some even die on their journey out of Africa. With the collaboration of businesses and football-establishment in both the UK and Nigeria, PAVE will strive to narrow to empower youth football communities to make informed decisions that retain their existing support systems and ensure they have access to mentorship and guidance when they move abroad to pursue their dreams. It is our goal to rescue future gen-

’The New York Giants select...
Matt Peart’ By Josh Grant
T
he 6”7 giant, Matt Peart, was drafted with the 99th overall pick in the 2020 NFL Draft that took place via a video call. He is a phenomenal athletic who weighs around 316 lbs; yet, he can run 40 yards in 5 seconds! Matthew Peart, was born in Kingston, Jamaica on June 11th 1997; however, he grew up in Bronx, New York. Growing up Peart used to play basketball and was a fan of the New York Knicks. Surprisingly, he didn’t take up American Football until he joined high school, where he was introduced to the sport. Due to his big frame and athleticism, American football became second nature to him. He was a novice, he had never played the game before, but he developed quickly helping his school, ’The Governor’s Academy’ to win four straight Independent School Championships. Post the NFL Draft; Peart, had an interview with the New York Giants, where he mentioned how basketball helped him with his game. ”I mean when you play basketball you know you gotta have a forward to play the sport, especially when you work in the post most of the time. I feel like, just having that hand-eye coordination has helped, but I feel like there’s a lot of tangible things that you can transfer from basketball over to football, and that’s what helped me get to where I am now.” At the moment, he looks like he has all the tools to be an all-time great. We are all rooting for you!
