We are motivated everyday by the talent and energy of our artisans and on the following pages, we want to share with you more about who they are and what they do. We know that our fellow One of a Kind visitors and fans also embrace this mentality, so why not share with us your One of a Kind experience? Got a favourite artisan? A favourite memory from the Show? Tell us, and we would love to feature your stories in our upcoming issues! We hope you will enjoy the first issue of the One of a Kind Magazine. Our Bilingual Exhibitor Relations and Recruitment Manager, Valerie Roy is always up for an adventure. So when fisherman and One of a Kind exhibitor Arnie Hengstler of The Fishery Seafoods invited us to go crabbing with his team, we took up the chance and sent Valerie to Salt Spring Island, British Columbia. Here is her adventure in pictures.

7 AM: Boarding the small hydroplane from Vancouver to Salt Spring Island for a crabbing adventure with Arnie Hengstler and his assistant Dave Davies.

As we landed on the water, my ride (Arnie 's boat) was already there! Arnie and Dave welcomed me with a warm smile and some fishing clothes. I changed in the cafe near the marina, grabbed a hot coffee as it was a wet and cold morning, and off we went on our crabbing day. The water and scenery was breathtaking. I was taking it all in while I discovered how to crab. I learned the ins and outs of crabbing, such as how big the crab has to be in order to be fished out or that the female species (pictured on the next page) have to be put back into the water to ensure the proper reproduction cycle. After we were done getting and emptying all the cages that were set out by Arnie and Dave prior to our trip, Arnie took us out to his lovely home for a crab lunch . Although I am not a big seafood person, I must admit, it was delicious. My mom, who is a chef and a big seafood lover, would be very disappointed if I told her I did not have any crab! 4 PM: Arnie drove us back to the marina where we hopped on the hydroplane heading back to Vancouver. This time, I sat beside the pilot (yes I did!) reminiscing what an amazing day I had.

HERE IS ARNIE'S FAVOURITE ASIAN INSPIRED CRAB RECIPE:

BLACK BEAN CRAB INGREDIENTS • • • • • • • • • • •

2 large crabs, cleaned, cut and cracked 1 tbsp vegetable oil 1 cup/250 ml canned black beans, drained 1/2 cup sake 2 cloves of garlic 2 or 3 green onions, chopped 1/4 tbsp fresh ginger, finely chopped 1 tbsp soy sauce 1 tsp sugar 1 tsp Asian style chili sauce Salt & pepper to taste

DIRECTIONS Soak black beans in sake overnight. Stir fry green onions, ginger and garlic in hot oil for 2 minutes. Add the crab and black bean mixture into the wok, stir to make sure all pieces are coated evenly. Then add soy sauce, salt, pepper, sugar, and chili sauce. Cook for about 10 minutes or until the flesh is firm and translucent.

SPECIAL THANKS To Arnie and Dave for this special adventure! For more info about The Fishery Seafoods, please visit www.thefishery.ca. Be sure to drop by their booth and say hi at the 2012 One of a Kind Christmas Show, November 22 to December 2 at the Direct Energy Centre.

HANDMADE AROUND THE WORLD

HYAKUMANBEN TEZUKURI ICHI KYOTO, JAPAN PHOTOS AND STORY: JANICE LEUNG

THE OBJECTIVE WAS SIMPLE: TO CREATE A MEETING PLACE WHERE KYOTO RESIDENTS COULD SHOP FOR HANDMADE GOODS FROM LOCAL ARTISANS UNDER THE CRISP BLUE SKIES.

To realize this vision, Kiyoshi Enomoto and Tsukasa Usui organized the first Hyakumanben Tezukuri lchi at Chion-ji Temple in Kyoto, Japan on April 15, 1987. When I visited Tezukuri lchi on April15, 2012, it was a beautiful spring day-the sky was clear and the cherry blossoms were in full bloom. The outdoor venue was packed shortly after the market opened. From this reception, it was apparent that community support for the event has not faded in the 25 years since the first Tezukuri lchi was held. If you find yourself in Kyoto, don't miss this charming destination to experience a slice of DIY creativity from one of Japan's most culturally enriched cities.

I<ARAMUITO Ceramicist and felt artist Chie Koma creates a wonderfully whimsical series of "Girl Brooches" using the needle felting technique. Each of her design features a popular hairstyle from young women in Japan . I couldn 't help but purchase one of her pieces-this stylish maven showcasing the odango (top knot) hairdo'! HOW DID THE TWO OF YOU MEET? B: Claudia (from Claudia Schulz Hats) and I met at the One of a Kind Show, we were neighbours. We immediately liked each other's work as we both love lines and curves. WHAT SPARKED THE COLLABORATION? B: The collaboration came naturally as we both have the same aesthetics and fall for the same silhouettes. Claudia uses different accesories for her hats and I thought porcelain would be interesting to mix with felt. TELL US A LITTLE BIT ABOUT THE FINAL PROJECT. C: Basma from ceramik b. came up with the idea of making porcelain buttons and mailed a few different options to me in Vancouver. My process for designing the hat often starts with finding an accessory, in this case Basma's buttons, and building the hat around it. I designed a cloche shape hat made out of wool felt, working with the overall elliptical shape of the buttons and the hat. The buttons are extremely thin and light. The button holes are a bit wider apart and I used orange stitching which is quite visible and creates a nice thin line.

HOW IS WORKING WITH ANOTHER ARTISAN DIFFERENT FROM WORKING ALONE? C: I think in order to do a collaboration with another artist it is essential to be compatible in your work. Basma from ceramik b. shares in her work the same aesthetics I do: minimalism, simple lines and shapes. We both worked in our mediums and trusted each other with the outcome. ANY PLANS FOR FUTURE COLLECTION? C: Nothing concrete at the moment, but for sure we will work on new pieces in the future.

HOW DID THE TWO OF YOU MEET? WHAT SPARKED THE COLLABORATION? L: At the 2011 One of a Kind Christmas Show, I was covering the show for the Style at Home blog. I was really drawn to Shannon's fabrics (from coucou salut), so I stopped by to introduce myself. During that conversation, it occurred to both of us that a collaboration would be a great idea . We spoke via email following that and planned the collection by sending photos and sketches back and forth . At the 2012 Spring Show, where we were both exhibiting, Shannon brought some samples of the fabric and ink colours for us to discuss. After that it was back to emails to finish planning the collection. TELL US A LITTLE BIT ABOUT THE FINAL PROJECT. L: Some of the prints were from Shannon's past work and some were newly designed for this collection . We both wanted the collection to have a modern, Scandinavian vibe and we struggled with the colour selection before landing on the simple, yet striking, black, white and green combo. We love that's it's so fresh! Shannon hand printed her designs onto 100% natural linen, using water based, eco-friendly dyes. She then shipped me the fabric and I got to work on constructing the lamp shades and adhering the fabric. Once they were finished, I shot and created the lookbook and listed the shades in my online store. HOW IS WORKING WITH ANOTHER ARTISAN DIFFERENT FROM WORKING ALONE? L: I can't speak for Shannon, but I found it to be a really good experience. Sometimes when you're too close to your own work, you can't see the obvious solution, but when you have another creative brain, invested in the success of the project, you suddenly have someone to bounce ideas off of until you reach the best solution. S: I agree that working with Lia (from Mod Pieces) was a fun and rewarding experience. Lamp shades are a new product for me, so it was interesting and challenging to conceptualize how my fabrics would work in this format. The end result was very exciting; when I completed the fabric, I sent it off to Lia for her to work her magic, so it wasn't until the final reveal that I saw how everything came together. It was better than I could have imagined and made all of the effort so completely worthwhile!

ANY PLANS FOR FUTURE COLLECTION? L: We haven't discussed any plans to collaborate again, but I would certainly love to. I am planning future collections with fellow One of a Kind artisans Avril Loreti , Nicole Tarasick and Evann Frisque. All of these collections are set to be released this year as well. The One of a Kind Show turned out to be a great place to spark ideas with likeminded, creative individuals. I'm so happy to have met and to be working with such talented ladies!

STUDIO STORIES Since most of the work on my hats is handwork, I am in the unique position that my studio is somewhat portable. While I work for most of the year out of my studio in the attic of my house in Toronto, I move the whole operation to a cottage in Port Ryerse (between Port Dover and Long Point) for the whole summer. My family and fellow cottagers are very used to seeing me at the beach, with a giant bag of wool hats, doing handwork all day. Here is a photo of some hats drying in the sun in front of Lake Erie. In 2010, I spent five months living in Paris with my husband, who is French. I took a giant pile of wool and hats with me to work on there, and whenever we had visitors coming over from Canada, they would be sent home with a bag of finished hats. That year I wondered if I should change the label on my hats from "Made in Canada" to "Made by a Canadian".
