What is it like running a handmade business with your family? In 2012, Jake Devine (the eldest son) joined his Ted in the workshop full time. Both Jake and Sullivan have helped out with small parts of the process since they were old enough to want to earn extra money! After attending college and managing a restaurant, Jake returned home to work. We were thrilled. Jake and Ted have been collaborating more and more lately. Ted is passing his skills over to Jake who adds his fresh ideas into the design of the pieces. Every couple of days, I have to put on my black and white striped referee shirt and don a whistle around my neck as they do not always see eye to eye, but the end result is always something special.
What is one of your favourite customer stories you can share with our readers? We have so many interesting stories about our customers. They trust us to work on their most treasured pieces of jewellery, and because of this relationship, we generally end up being great friends with our clients. We feel very luck to have the opportunity to meet so many incredible people over the years. This really is one of the greatest bonuses of our job! One good story is of a groom who came into the shop around 10:30am on a Saturday morning. This would have been in about 1984 or so. His wedding band was far too big for him and he needed it for his wedding later that day. Ted rushed home to his workshop, which was 45 minutes away, cleaned Summer 2015 17

up the ring, sized it, and had it back to the Chateau in time for the fellow’s 3pm wedding! As I write this, it occurs to me that I do have many funny, touching and beautiful stories to tell about all the wonderful people we have met and created pieces for!
Finally, describe a perfect summer weekend at Ottawa? The beautiful thing about Ottawa is that everything is within an hour’s drive. We tend to split our time between the city centre and the outlining communities. The Westboro-Hintonburg area on a Saturday morning is something special. Grabbing a coffee at many of the cafes or walking down the strip with all the wonderful shops is a must! And it’s only blocks from the Ottawa River, with many parks and a great beach! Friday afternoons the patio at the Cheshire Cat (in rural Carp) is a great spot to grab a local beer and relax with their awesome staff. It really is worth the short drive. The Cat is a cozy little pub in a 100 year old school house, complete with great music, and a woodstove to keep warm if you visit in the winter. When we are downtown a walk along the canal cannot be beaten. You’re steps away from the Byward market where you can walk the isles with fresh produce, lunch at many of the hundreds of restaurants, or just sit and people watch for the afternoon. We also love to go for dinner at Frasers Café, on the corner of Springfield and Beechwood, in the New Edinburgh area. Locally owned, Ross and Simon Fraser prepare the most amazing food, using local ingredients. Try the kitchen surprise when you visit! In Ottawa, you can find yourself outside the city in a very short time; I think that’s the beauty of it. It doesn’t matter what weekend it is, or what it is you like to do, our Ottawa community has it. Being someone that lives here, I promise a weekend in Ottawa will be something you never thought it was.

Can you give us a quick intro about yourself and your company, N-Product?
Ottawa. We’re among other creative tenants of woodworkers, designers and tech startups.
We are a husband and wife duo living and dreaming in Ottawa. We are also practitioners of the Slow Goods movement.
It’s a great opportunity to experience creative collisions at random moments of the day.
I (Dom) was born in South Vietnam and lived in India, before moving to Ottawa, Canada at a young age. I was working as a designer and creative director for design agencies, global consumer brands, NGOs and government agencies before starting N-Product.
In recent years, many interesting makers and designers doing really cool things have emerged from Ottawa, why do you think that is?
My wife, Chrstale was born and raised in Ottawa. Before N-Product, she was working in politics, associations and public service.
We love N-Product’s byline, “Slow Goods Made in Canada”, can you tell us a bit more about it? For us, it speaks to the process of giving objects or designs mindfulness and choosing a sustainable method of production.
Ottawa has been always an incubator of creativity, but we’ve lost a lot of people to other creative centres around the world. What we have noticed in the past few years, lots of people have returned and some have even chose to stay to build the creative class. Ottawans also have an extra chip on our shoulders, we like to think of ourselves as the little grey concrete sibling to the flashier Montreal and Toronto ;)
What are some of your favourite hangouts in Ottawa?
We love the term Slow Goods, we even added it to Wikipedia!
We love: Art Is In Bakery and Beyond the Pale. We loved them before, even more so since their our new neighbours!
We heard you recently moved into a new studio space, how has it been?

Can you tell us a bit about Out of Ruins? Hi, my name is Diane! It all started when my youngest son was in university and needed a part time job. My friends really encouraged me to try selling my art at craft shows. Together he and I did a few outdoor craft shows and BOOM a business was born. It did not take much longer before my husband and oldest son were also involved. The interest in my art was amazing and 13 years later it continues to be in demand. I am doing more custom work but am happy to create pieces for new collectors.
Walk us through how you put together one of your window frame pieces? Each and every window design takes a different amount of time. First we cut the glass, then layer pieces of glass onto each other to create dimension and carefully place the item into a special glass firing kiln. The kiln firing takes approximately 24 hours. Some glass art projects take one firing others can take two or three firings. (Hydro loves us). Once the piece has been assembled in the wooden frame then it is off to be ‘hooked, priced, bagged’ and ready to be displayed at our next craft show.

We know your flattened wine bottle cheeseboards are very popular, can you tell us what inspired the creation of this product? Wine bottle cheeseboards are my husbands special item. It’s an old fire pit trick refined to be much more successful. Imagine how much you can reduce landfill sites if the bottles of wine previously enjoyed are re-purposed into great cheeseboards. To add to that, we get hundreds of cases of vodka bottles and create amazing drinking glasses. This is recycling at its best.
What are your plans for the summer? When summer arrives I keep my fingers crossed for non rainy weekends with no intense heat! We rarely get our wish but as we head out to Muskoka, and Toronto, we are always amazed at the fantastic support of craft show patrons who ignore the weather and come to enjoy the vast amount of creativity in one location.
Lastly, what do you love best about living in Ottawa? If you have never been to Ottawa it is hard to believe what a pretty city this is. The Parliament buildings are amazing, the waterways, the bike paths and the Gatineau Hills. Skiing is 40 minutes away as is mountain biking, and the ability to drive anywhere is a short amount of time is a gift. This is a wonderful city that has culture, special events like Bluesfest, our own hockey team and an easy way of life. Finally, the nations capital certainly knows how to rock Canada Day. Not to be missed in your lifetime.

In my travels to Hong Kong earlier this Spring...
I took an eyeglasses making workshop led by local brand, Genic Eyewear. Founded by Emily Tai, she started the “Make Your Glasses� workshop in 2013 to help her customers define their signature style and to promote the craftsmanship of handmade eyewear. In the fivehour session, students got to design their own frames, selected their favourite materials, and handcrafted a pair of One of a Kind eyeglasses. Using various tools like the piercing saw and hand files, I carefully formed the frame and the temples of my sunglasses. It was a laborious exercise of patience and precision. It was a bit nerve wrecking at the start of the project as I was trying hard not to cut too close into the template to alter the shape or worst, break the rim of the finished piece. However, after I got used to the process of cutting and filing the acetate, I was able to relax and really enjoyed the class. As I saw my glasses slowly came into shape, I felt an overwhelming sense of satisfaction and accomplishment. Once the cutting and filing were done, the pieces were sent to a professional craftsman to be polished and assembled. And in two weeks time, your own custom eyeglasses are ready for the spotlight! With summer in full swing, I am ready for sunshine and warm weather with a pair of sunnies I can truly call my own!
