Grzaniec Galicyjski or Polish Hot Mulled Wine
Grzaniec Galicyjski is the traditional Polish version of hot mulled wine. Grzaniec, pronounced grrzzahnyets, or Grzane means mulled. Galicyjski, pronounced gah-leet-see-l-skee, indicates Galician in nature. The wine, or wino, is understood. Generally served at Christkindlmarkets outdoors in winter; it is also a popular refreshment when skating or sledding. The recipe is very much like German gluhwein, Swedish glog or French vin chaud. It is also known by Czechs as svarene, by Croatians as kuhano vino, by Serbs as kuvano vino, by Bulgarians as greyano vino, by Romanians as vin fiert and by Hungarians as forralt bor. Polish hot mulled wine is a treat found at Christmas markets outdoors all over Europe. This hot winter drink contains red wine, sugar and spices.
Recipe for 1 quart of Grzaniec Galicyjski or Polish Hot Mulled Wine
Ingredients:
1 quart Red Wine – preferably dry ½ Bay Leaf (cracked from whole) 1 Cinnamon Stick 5 Semi-Crushed Cloves ½ cup Sugar Directions:
Mix all ingredients in a large saucepan, heating and stirring until sugar is dissolved. When the boiling point is reached, remove it from the heat. Strain through a sieve and serve hot.
