oth of these ads rely on a strong image focal point to relay their messages. Because there is a significant amount of texture in both ads (the reflection of the water in the WWF ad and the sand in the Columbia ad), both feature simple tags in colors complimentary to the photos.

he strong attention and allotment of negative space (not our enemy) helps to draw focus to the nail and tape, playing a crucial complementary role in successful role in visual communication.

composition D

espite being technically two pictures pieced together, the unity of the colors, lines, and typography help this design to look coherent and convey one strong message: that the beauty workshops make cancer patients “look good and feel better.

T

his ad attempts to convey the jumbled mess of excuses in one’s head. Effectively molding the text into a slightly irregular organic form of the human brain, the ad’s typography and shape couple to deliver a succinct message.

composition A

dvertising a powerful highlighter, the ad delivers an equally powerful visual presentation through use of the bold yellow color, differentiating the product and slogan from the bland black and white background.

A

lthough this ad is promoting parking, perhaps the opposite of movement, the visual movement of the ad caused by the flow of the line of goldfish and porcupine communicates exciting dynamic movement. The text in the contrasting lower right hand corner helps to make a converging diagonal line, aiding the eye to rest upon the porcupine.

he singular, centered object in the image creates a strong focal point. However, because the fry is thicker on the left side, the logo in the lower right corner helps to balance the entire image and draw visual attention to the fact that the hot ketchup has burned the fry.

hile there are many aspects of clever marketing present in this ad, the use of line in the photo, from the floor tiles to the brick work to the ceiling, help to divide and guide the eye to the boy and the man being duped, creating a unified picture and evoking the proper jocular emotions.

types and logos

(ABOVE) Displaying a powerful message about the influence of words, fittingly, the words and type displayed on the ad enhance the overall effect of the design. The rough, handwritten type on the hand in varying sizes and tints translates into a more personal feel as if the words are directly aimed toward the boy than if the type were Helvetica or Times New Roman. (RIGHT) In this simplistic yet inspired ad, the composition of the type speaks to the entirety of McDonald’s message: here you can “mix your own McFlurry.” The genius usage of McFlurry materials to create the word and the strategic usage of white space with a small tag in the lower right hand corner focus the viewer’s attention to the center of the advertisement.

types and logos An ad actually about bad typography, the ironic use of bad typography over “good” typography perfectly illustrates the way in which the bad stands out.

The simplicity of the ad’s color and old, campy text draw the viewer in to focus solely on its sole message. If the image were more complicated, the idea that apathy stands out from malaria and dysentery might be lost on the audience.

types and logos Here, the minimalistic yet futuristic text and logo serves to enhance and compliment the image.

The use of text to create the fruitful “fruit baskets” branch and the significantly less productive “fruit trees” branch enhances the ad’s message.

COLOR BLUE - The dominant use of blue in this image helps to convey a feeling of refreshment and coolness while representing one of the Pepsi company’s main colors.

RED - Besides being KFC’s signature color, red is also a color that induces hunger, perfect for a food advertisement. The predominantly red background also contrasts nicely with the yellow fingerprints.

COLOR ORANGE - Obviously advertising an orange-flavored gummy bear, the use of any other color would have been ludicrous. The orange footprints contrast nicely against the white background.

YELLOW - Contrasting effectively against the gray background while popping with the red tomatoes, the yellow in this image is highly aesthetically pleasing while also symbolizing cheese, conveying just how much cheese went into the “seriously good sauce.-

COLOR BLACK - Humorous, simple, and effective, the black, minimalistic silohuettes contrast against the off-white background, doing just enough to show the wild difference a hat can make, transforming Hitler into Charlie Chaplin.

WHITE - An excellent use of white, I have nothing but positive to say about this negative space. It simplifies the image, and draws attention to the chicken, text, and microwave. With so much going on in the text and chicken, any other background color may have contributed to the visual noise and cluttered the image.

COLOR PURPLE - Yves Saint Laurent’s signature color, the purple paint conveys an air of regality while perhaps providing a visual of what the perfume may feel like to the wearer.

GREEN - Green is the color of energy, renewal, and the outdoors. This excellent use of greenery to demonstrate the effect on the earth’s oxygen supply if we continue to remove our rainforests is highly effective without the use of many words, largely in part due to the powerful effect green has on the image.

page layouts

(ABOVE) I like this spread because of its simplicity with the large black and white image coupled with the understated text. I also like the way the designer played with the headline font to create unity with the rest of the edgy design.man.

(BOTTOM) Mute Math has a distinct alternative yet playful sound, and this spread captures that attitude perfectly. The drawn dotted lines coupled with the handwritten font, muted color, and cut-out photo style of the artists play very well together.man.

(ABOVE) At first, I couldn’t decide if the web in the left hand corrner was tacky or not, but I chose this spread because of the accomodation of the text to the image. From the bold headline and summary on the brick wall to the body text on the parking lot ground, the text works extremely well with the image.man.

(BOTTOM) This spread is fairly simple, and yet the playful variance in size of the numbers and headline text with colors complimenting the beautiful image are very effective and clean.

(ABOVE) Again, this is another example of a basic spread that uses a bold image and font to its advantage. Here, I also like the idea of using a warm contrasting color such as orange in an otherwise completely black and white image.man.

(BOTTOM) I thought the idea of putting the headline in a nametag was kind of a cool idea. The red in the nametag picks up the red in Kat’s lips and accessories nicely as well, adding to the unity. The edgy drop cap is a nice touch, too.

web&multimedia

Bienville Capital Management - Besides being extremely clean and user-friendly, the website’s home page features a (maybe animated?) video of a New York intersection, making a really cool effect. http://www.bienvillecapital.com/

Tool Production Company - Similarly, this site’s home page background features clips of the company’s footage from previous projects. Additionally, it features parallax scrolling and a very user-friendly interface. http://toolofna.com/#!/home

web&multimedia

Beatbox Academy - By far my personal favorite, this site’s homepage serves as an interactive introduction, and the fun images on the other tabs make you want to keep surfing the site. Seriously considered taking up beat boxing after this one. http://www. beatboxacademy.ca/

Anonymous Digital Production Company - Although this might not be good to admit, I didn’t quite understand some of the tabs or the information this site was trying to convey. However, what it lacked in clarity, it made up in really cool design and the use of fun silohuettes all the way through the site. http://weareanonymous.fr/

web&multimedia

Satorisan - This offered a really innovative way to portray merchandise, its homepage a very beautiful slideshow of its products. My only complaint is that it was not as interactive as it could be, in my opinion. http://satorisan.com/en/home

Nick Jones - This site was in a close second for my favorite out of these six. A great example of the possibilities for a personal website, the page is easy to use and features parallax scrolling in a really cool format that makes you feel extremely tech-savvy. Everything on this page is interactive, too, another plus. http://www.narrowdesign.com/
