FROM THE MINISTER FOR TOURISM
Welcome to the 2013 Hunter & Central Coast Awards for Excellence in Tourism. These annual Awards celebrate the best that the Hunter and Central Coast regions of NSW have to offer international and domestic visitors. They also acknowledge the passion, hard work and professionalism of dedicated individuals and businesses in the region’s tourism industry. Last year, six winners of the Hunter & Central Coast Awards went on to achieve recognition at the prestigious NSW Tourism Awards and Qantas Australian Tourism Awards. These winners included the Hunter Valley's Wyndham Estate Cellar Door, which won Gold at the Qantas Australian Tourism Awards in the Tourism Wineries, Distilleries and Boutique Breweries category and Margan Restaurant, which won Gold in the Tourism Restaurants and Catering Services category. Almost half of the 257,000 jobs in tourism in NSW are in regional areas, making tourism the lifeblood of many local and regional economies.
This is why the NSW Government is committed to supporting and growing regional NSW so that it can reach its full potential. Awards like this also go a long way in highlighting the efforts and achievements of those working in the sector. I would like to thank the sponsors for their support of the Awards and also commend all the finalists tonight. Congratulations to the Award winners and I wish you all the very best at the State and National Tourism Awards. To those attending tonight, I encourage you to stay a while, explore and enjoy the Hunter and Central Coast regions of NSW.
George Souris Member for Upper Hunter Minister for Tourism, Major Events, Hospitality and Racing, and Minister of the Arts
