Its favourable geographic position, excellent transport connections, and the wide range of congress venues it offers are the key reasons why Opatija is today one of the leading convention destinations in Croatia. When presenting Opatija as a congress town, it should be pointed out that our business partners have a wide range of venues at their disposal, ranging from historic ballrooms, hotel halls with a capacity of up to 500 participants and outdoor amphitheatres, to modern premises such as our Gervais Centre. With more than 30 hotels, most of which are categorised with four or five stars, a range of first-class restaurants, and a variety of recreational and wellness facilities, our town can provide everything congress organisers need to hold top projects and presentations. For larger conventions with around 1,000 participants, there is also our Marino Cvetković Sports Hall. Participants at our business meetings often praise the fact that in Opatija everything is accessible on foot, and they are especially impressed by our greenery. The pride of our town – its spacious, wellmanicured parks and gardens, the 10-km-long coastal promenade, and the numerous beaches and fountains – provide the perfect setting for villas and hotels that can accommodate up to 9,000 visitors. Opatija, often called the ‘Pearl of the Adriatic’, is one of Croatia’s most famous tourist destinations, with a tradition stretching back more than 175 years. It is located on the coast at the foot of the green slopes of Mount Učka. Opatija is a town of culture, festivals and artists, flowers and parks, sports and various events. Its benefits were first discovered back in the 19th century by Iginio Scarpa, a merchant from Rijeka. His Villa Angiolina, which he built here in 1844 and named after his late wife, paved the way for the development of tourism in Opatija. The Hotel Kvarner was opened in 1884, and the rest is history. Other hotels, sanatoriums and guest houses followed soon afterwards, and Opatija became a meeting point for the Central European elite: writers A. P. Chekhov and James Joyce, composer Gustav Mahler, Emperor Franz Joseph, and many other princes and princesses, poets and artists used to stay here. After World War Two, Opatija started a new chapter in its history. It became an all-year-round destination, whose combination of top-quality accommodation, leisure and congress facilities, varied events and excellent restaurants has rightly earned it the title of a 21th-century destination.

OPATIJA CONVENTION & INCENTIVE BUREAU AND OPATIJA TOURIST BOARD The Opatija Convention & Incentive Bureau, as part of Opatija Tourist Board, is a non-profit organisation aimed at promoting Opatija as a Croatian convention and incentive destination. The activities of the Bureau include daily communication with service providers in the town, event organisers, and potential clients. The Bureau also supports the events that take place in Opatija by providing information and promoting them on the internet. The activities of the Bureau also include promoting Opatija’s convention and incentive offer on the international convention market via specialised congress trade fairs and workshops. Science and research Opatija is a town surrounded by many scientific facilities, which provides an excellent basis for the organisation of specialist conferences and symposiums. The University of Rijeka, the central institution for education and research in Primorje-Gorski Kotar County, is the area’s main research centre, and has implemented the Research Infrastructure for Campus-based Laboratories at the University of Rijeka project since 2015. The project, whose goal is to improve the research infrastructure of centres and laboratories located within the campus, is the result of the University’s endeavours to actively participate in the community, all the while facilitating research that will involve the economic sector and its current surroundings at the local, national and international levels. Three university research centres have been developed as part of the project (the Centre for High Throughput Technology, the Centre for Micro and Nano Sciences and Technologies, and the Centre for Advanced Computing and Modelling), as well as several Faculty of Civil Engineering laboratories (the Hydraulic Laboratory, Geotechnical Laboratory, Laboratory for Transportation Engineering, Laboratory for Materials, and Construction Laboratory). The state-of-the-art equipment installed in the research centres has resulted in the achievement of excellence in development, innovation and research at the national level. The practical research conducted here connects science with industry, which in the future should influence the development of the economy in general. Besides the University as a whole, the Faculty of Medicine in Rijeka is also significant when it comes to tourism. Through its educational programmes, it is a partner in the implementation of professional and scientific projects, particularly with regard to the development of health tourism. We should also mention Thalassotherapia Opatija as one of the most respected health tourism institutions not only in Kvarner but in the wider area. This institution was established in 1958 and has been the Reference Centre for Health Tourism and Medically Programmed Holidays since 1998. The professional activities of the Reference Centre are carried out in accordance with modern standards in diagnostic and therapeutic procedures and are constantly intertwined with scientific research and educational activities. When all these aspects are taken into account, Opatija is a destination with an exceptional background when it comes to connecting science and tourism.

The Grand Hotel Adriatic is located close to the sea and is only a ten-minute walk from the centre of Opatija. This hotel marked the beginning of modern congress tourism in Opatija. Its congress hall was inaugurated in 1971 with the Congress of the International Ski Federation (FIS). Today, the Adriatic hosts more than a hundred national and international congresses every year. Its conference facilities are suitable for different types of meeting. In 2016, the Grand Hotel Adriatic started making significant investments to raise the quality of its services to meet the demands of modern guests, especially with regard to its conference facilities. The large congress hall has 550 seats, while the lobby can be used as an exhibition space. In addition, there are seven smaller conference and meeting rooms that can accommodate between 15 and 150 delegates, some of which have natural light. Event organisers have the latest audio-visual equipment at their disposal. For relaxation after a working day, there is a wellness centre with a view of Kvarner Bay. The outdoor pool is suitable for the organisation of accompanying events.

The hotel is located in the quiet part of Opatija, right at the entrance to the town centre, above the Lungomare coastal promenade and a private beach. The hotel was fully renovated in 2019 and now offers the latest conference facilities. It features a large congress hall that can host conventions with up to 500 people, and also seven meeting rooms. The Hotel Kvarner is the oldest hotel on the Croatian Adriatic, built in 1884. It has maintained its original splendour and luxury right up to the present day, and hosts some of the major events in Opatija. The Kvarner’s convention facilities include the magnificent Crystal Hall, which is 655 m2 in size and has a capacity of 250 to 850 delegates, and also the Yellow room. The hall with its 920 m2 outdoor terrace is one of the most attractive venues for hosting gala evenings, concerts, meetings, and similar events. Opatija’s new sports hall (opened in 2013) hosts not only sports events but also major town spectacles, ranging from music festivals and concerts to fairs and business events. It is located right at the entrance to the centre of Opatija and is just a short walking distance or few minutes’ drive from most hotels in the town. The hall covers an area of 1,650 m2 that can be used as an exhibition space. For concerts and similar events, the telescopic stands can seat up to 1,217 spectators, but in this case the available surface is reduced to 1,450 m2. Next to the main hall, there is a smaller hall that can be used as a conference hall for lectures, meetings and workshops for up to 200 participants. Both halls have natural light, and there is a spacious terrace in front of the building, perfect for formal opening ceremonies or receptions. In the hall there is also a small meeting room for up to 20 participants. The property has an underground garage for 140 cars, and an à la carte restaurant offering Mediterranean cuisine. An electric vehicle charging station is located nearby.

Opened in 2017, the Centre functions as a multifunctional centre for conferences, and business and cultural events. It is located right in the town centre and is just a short walking distance from most hotels in Opatija. It has a large theatre hall for up to 500 people, while on the ground floor there is a smaller hall with natural light which can be divided into three parts if required. The facility also has a bar, and its spacious lobby can be used for exhibitions, coffee breaks, or other social events during conventions. In the basement, there is a club for concerts and other types of musical and entertainment event. The club is isolated from the rest of the building and has a private entrance.

The Faculty of Tourism and Hospitality Management is located in the most beautiful part of the Opatija Riviera, in the village of Ika, right by the sea, which makes it extremely attractive for participants in various events. Učka Nature Park – Visitor Centre Poklon

Visitor Centre Poklon is located at the heart of Učka Nature Park. Centre features interpretation museum, educational, conference, catering and tourist facilities on 1.200 m2. Location on 930 meters altitude makes it unique not just locally, but internationally as well. Conference hall with 172 m2 has capacity for up to 80 participants. It can be divided to two smaller halls of a same size. Hall is equipped with basic audio-visual equipment. Excursions Opatija is the perfect starting point for day trips to some of the region’s most attractive destinations, the most prominent being the Plitvice Lakes National Park, a natural phenomenon consisting of 16 interconnected lakes, which has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1979. A perfect way to experience Kvarner Bay and Opatija is to take a boat trip. You can sail along the Riviera’s coastline or continue to the island of Cres, where you can observe griffon vultures or taste fish prepared in the traditional way on a fish picnic. Located on the southern tip of the Istrian peninsula is Brijuni National Park, with its Roman ruins, exhibitions in President Tito’s former residence, a zoo with exotic animals, and an 18-hole golf course. Rovinj’s most distinctive landmark is the famous Church of St. Euphemia, Pula is renowned for its well-preserved Roman

amphitheatre, whose construction began in the 1st century under the Emperor Vespasian, while Poreč is known for its Euphrasian Basilica, another UNESCO World Heritage Site. A culinary tour of Istria, which typically includes visits to typical konoba-style taverns or wine cellars where you can sample wine, cheese and pršut dry-cured ham, is a perfect experience for every food and wine lover. The Istrian peninsula is also known for its black and white truffles. On the island of Krk, visitors can try the indigenous žlahtina wine in the small town of Vrbnik or visit the beautiful small island of Košljun, which has a Franciscan monastery. Venice, a wonderful destination for a day trip to Italy, is only two hours’ drive from Opatija. Its squares, bridges, gondolas and churches will surely amaze all globetrotters. Gorski Kotar, the wooded hinterland of Kvarner, also features some extraordinarily

sights, such as Risnjak National Park, which covers an area of 64 km2 and features the 4.5 km-long Leska educational trail, Kamačnik Gorge, the Zeleni Vir protected landscape, Lake Lokve, and Lake Bajer near Fužine. Another interesting destination for a day trip is Croatia’s capital, Zagreb. Its historic old town, the famous Grič cannon and Ilica Street – these are just a few of this beautiful city’s sights that should not be missed. Rijeka, Croatia’s most important port, is a town with a rich history, young spirit and open-minded residents. Visit its Old Town, the main Korzo promenade, or the Trsat area with its fortress. Let us not forget the trips to Opatija’s nearby medieval hilltop towns of Kastav, Mošćenice and Veprinac, former centres of social events, and today witnesses to the area’s rich history and the way people used to live here. Events A visit to Opatija has always meant a great time. Opatija has the reputation of being a destination offering an all-year-round programme of attractive events that caters for all tastes: gourmets, music lovers, athletes and sport enthusiasts, and also all those wishing to learn more about the area’s local customs. The beginning of the year is always dedicated to carnival events, and a very special one in Opatija (traditionally held at the end of carnival) is the famous Balinjerada, a race of vehicles that run on ball bearings instead of wheels, as well as the Children’s Carnival Parade. The main summer event in Opatija is RetrOpatija, a type of musical time machine, during which you can encounter visitors on the streets of Opatija dressed in fashion expressions of the different musical periods. Excellent bands perform at different locations in the town, ensuring an excellent atmosphere. The venue for a variety of concerts, musicals, operas and festivals, Opatija’s Open Air Theatre is a must-see place for guests in search of great entertainment programmes. On several occasions during the year, Opatija plays host to a series of classical music concerts by talented musicians.

During the first weekend in July, Opatija hosts a festival attended by passionate jazz lovers. This is the fantastic Liburnia Jazz Festival, which offers three days of unforgettable jazz for all jazz lovers. Enjoy a fascinating Advent by the sea in the festive atmosphere of Opatija. Luxuriously decorated streets and squares, an ice skating rink, and various musical and theatrical performances at numerous magnificent locations are just a small part of the enchanting Advent in Opatija programme. On the sweetest weekend of the year, the first weekend in December, chocolate lovers have the opportunity to enjoy the fantastic flavours of chocolate desserts in one place.
