Lee County REALTORS® Donate to $23,000 to Local Non-Profits Proceeds from annual BASH fundraiser support Food Bank of East Alabama, Mercy Medical

Auburn, AL— A combined effort from local REALTORS® led to a significant donation to two local non-profits recently. Lee County Association of REALTORS® (LCAR) members raised $23,000 for the Food Bank of East Alabama and Mercy Medical Ministry & Clinic at their annual BASH fundraiser held this year April 21, 2022. LCAR Community Service Chair Hollis Marshall awarded checks to the local non-profits at their monthly business meeting on May 20, 2022. Carole Harrison, LCAR President for 2022, said LCAR has always given back to the community, and the Food Bank of East Alabama and Mercy Medical have been beneficiaries for many years. “Our fundraiser and awards event, BASH, stands for ‘Building and Sharing Hope,’ and what was raised this year means even more to these organizations,” Harrison said. “With inflation touching all of our lives, it is especially important to support those in our community that are hurting the most. It’s what REALTORS do.” The Food Bank of East Alabama, a partner of Feeding Alabama and Feeding America, works to provide nutritious food to food-insecure individuals throughout the region. Efforts include organizing food collection and donations, food delivery, coordinating with partner agencies for distribution via food pantries, and more. Their service area includes Randolph, Chambers, Lee, Tallapoosa, Macon, Russell and Barbour counties. Mercy Medical Ministry & Clinic works to provide medical care to the medically underserved in Lee County and the surrounding area. The clinic provides primary care to the uninsured, which also includes women’s health visits. Family medical care, spiritual counseling and prescription assistance are among the ministry’s services as well. For more information, please contact Jamie Sergen at 334-321-0606, or email jsergen@leecorealtors.com. For more information about the Lee County Association of REALTORS, visit leecorealtors.org.

Bringing joy and creativity to your home, Tonya Wilson deWaart The Crazy Crafty Chick

Summers In The South Summer is in full fling for our “small town on the Plains” and while we are all looking at the temperatures, we also are “gawking” at the temperature index. You know that temp that we feel on our skins and into our bones. This may be a summer for the records - we just need to figure out how to get through these hot days without melting like the Wicked Witch of the West from The Wizard of Oz. And yes, right now that is exactly what I am saying “I am melting, I am melting, what a world, what a world.”

This Crazy Crafty Chick “loves” to spend time outdoors on the patio looking at Clements Pond in our backyard. This pond has been around for about 60 years and was originally known for a fishing area where The Clements Family would hand out bait and the town would come fish for the day. Now the pond is surrounded by homes where adults sit and have that “adult beverage” after a long day of work and kids still run around the pond throwing their fishing poles into the water hoping to catch that huge fish. As I have been sitting outside observing the fun, I have been bothered by flies, mosquitos and all the other “fabulous” creatures God has blessed us with in the South. I did some digging and talked to a few experts about this experience. Here is what I found to help us all cope with our outdoor time during the next few months: 1) Mosquitos are just part of what we have to deal with in the South. To try to ease the influx of mosquitoes and bugs, I would 100% call a Mosquito Control Company. We have so many small businesses in the Auburn/Opelika area that offer a tailored plan of targeted control and added protection for your yard. 2) “Crazy Chick, I can’t afford another bill during this time.” Well well well, I did a bit more digging for the natural, less expensive version and even tested it out. I researched the plants that mosquitoes and flies HATE yet will not bother people. Here is a list of what you can grab at any local plant store. I personally went to Ace on East University, used a $5 off $25 coupon and was set. a) Citronella - we love the lemon scent, not the pesky bugs. These plants can be kept in pots or planted in the ground. I have surrounded my porch with 3 and have seen bugs fly away as they near the plants.

b) avender - this is actually a scientific anomaly. We cannot figure out why those flying bugs hate it so much. The best guess is the sweet smell. c) asil - this was the first herb I bought this year, but not as a bug repellant. I just like to cook with it. This herb is known to knock down and kill certain types of mosquitoes. Yep, sign me up d) osemary - also pairs great with any type of chicken, to my surprise this herb is one of the best natural repellents for all annoying insects. Plant a sprig in your flower garden and around the house and it will grow crazy over the summer. e) Marigolds - id you think a flower might do the trick Without getting into too much science, marigolds contain pyrethrum which is an insecticidal compound that is used in bug repellents. So now we can throw some lovely yellow colors in with our green plants. f) Good ole fashioned enus Fly Trap. Nuff said. 3) While we have so many natural resources there are so many other types of “ingenious ideas” to control those bugs in our outdoor and yes, indoor space too With just a quick look on Amazon you have hanging Fly Traps, several pet safe sprays, and even Mitronella a stick you light where the smoke keeps the bugs away). And yes, I even saw a few bug zappers That will bring memories back to those 0 and above. I know many of us will stay inside during the next few weeks and months. That is when it is 100% ok to close those blinds, curtains and shades all day long. Turn off as many indoor lights as possible to keep added heat inside and just binge watch all the fabulous tv shows and movies on all the various streaming channels available these days. eep our furry friends inside or even add a fan on the porch so they can also enjoy these days and be sure to drink plenty of water. Then we may, just may make it to October when the weather gets cooler.
