Befriend A Lender
What is all the talk about these days? Mortgage rates of course! Lots of information is circulating amongst homeowners and those looking to make a move.
It’s human nature to talk, to share information and sometimes to spread scary stories. We have also been programmed to never discuss money. It’s southern culture. For these reasons I fnd many buyers are hesitant to call their lender and have the conversations they need to have. They are afraid of what they will fnd out. Buyers would much rather look at pretty houses and dream about their next home. Unfortunately, most buyers are going about it backwards.
Step number one when even considering a move is to call a local lender! Don’t take what your friends and relatives have told you as fact. The fact is that local lenders will have the most accurate information for your specifc circumstance. Each and every person’s lending situation is different. What works for your neighbor may not work for you. Your friend’s interest rate may not be the rate for you.
Lending institutions have many different products in their tool belts to offer consumers based on their specifc needs. If you have a conversation about your lending options on the front end you will have a much more successful house hunt. You will know your budget, know what you are looking at as far as payments and you might even fnd out that a build or renovation are more attainable than you thought.
Who should you call? Always someone local. If you need recommendations on a great local lender, call your realtor. They will have several great contacts for you. And, as always, if you don’t have a realtor….call me!
Halloween
A Holiday With No Expectation
To say this article was diffcult to write is an understatement! Don’t get me wrong - I love all the holidays from those that are considered Federal, to the fun and kinda meaningless ones like “Donut Day” and “Mother/Son Picture Day” where we frantically scramble to fnd a pic so our child will feel forgotten and forever ruin his future!. The point is - almost anything that there is to celebrate and brings smiles and joy to faces - I am 100% into participating!
If you are like me, you may know a little about the “tradition” of Halloween. Let’s take just a second to see where Halloween started and a few fun and interesting facts. Halloween is actually one of the oldest traditions in the world as it touches on an essential element of the human condition and mystery, in my opinion, - the relationship between the living and the dead. The tradition originated with the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain, when
people would light bonfres and wear costumes to ward off ghosts. As this became a yearly tradition, in the eighth century, Pope Gregory III designated November 1st as a time to honor all saints. Soon, All Saints Day incorporated some of the traditions of Samhain and “wala” - this is our Halloween today!
Since the history of Halloween and the various traditions our country has regarding this celebration allows for very little expectation. Let’s think about this - Christmas, Thanksgiving, Easter, Valentine’s Day and even down to Labor Day and Memorial Day - there are things that are expected of us due to our culture and current American society. Presents, food, celebrations with inviting family and friends which includes cleaning the house, making sure there are no rings in the toilet and decorations inside, out and on the table. In summary - Halloween can be done or not done “and” no one will give it a second thought on how you may or may not celebrate. Isn’t that lovely?
So whether you celebrate Halloween with “thrills and chills” or turn the lights off, rip off the doorbell and get to bed early there is no judgment! No matter your celebration tradition, we have all seen a change to how we decorate for Halloween over the last 40 years. I am showing some age here - back in the early 1980’s it was a carved pumpkin and that was it!
Bringing joy and creativity to your home, Tonya Wilson deWaart The Crazy Crafty ChickNowadays - I am seeing the creativity and fabulous fun our friends and neighbors do to make others have fun smiles and scary screams. Here are a few ideas you can take along that have given me some joyful smiles:
1)
The good ol’ fashioned carved and/or painted pumpkins with a candle. Add some cute scarecrows and some fake colored pumpkins - keeping it real and simple - I like it!
2)
Themed Decor (this can go anywhere from vampires, cemetery or skeletons) - My favorite are large and small spiders with the yarned spider webs dressed on the house. If ya’ do this theme, grab a jumping spider to hang right above your door and ask the kids to scream “Trick or Treat” - the spider will pop down and give a fright!
3) Yard Blow Ups - I am usually not one for all the air decor, yet during this time, blow it all up and just have anything from Mickey Mouse dressed up to that freaky skeleton man draped in black that stands 10 feet tall. The more the merrier!
4)
One of my favorites - lighted houses with spooky music! This is a new one for us. I remember the frst time I saw this was on the news. It was to the song “Thriller” by Micheal Jackson and the lights to the house danced with the beat to the music. This decor theme crossed the country and now at least one house in a neighborhood has a lighted musical house!
5) Little and Big - I love the homes where the owners think of all the kiddos and adults participating in the celebration. You can throw Charlie Brown’s Halloween movie onto your garage door with a computer, projector and TV dinner tray for the younger kiddos. For those older kids, have a haunted area where even the homeowners are participating and “if” you can make it past the “scariness” you may get a whole entire candy bar. And yes, these are typically the houses that also “love on the adults” and have some cocktails waiting for you to take along as you walk the kiddos from home to home.
As we enter the time of change in our small community with kids back in session at Auburn University and all schools are back open with the yellow buses running and the weather “seems” to be cooling, football is totally back - I am so grateful for all the things in our Home on the Plains. Enjoy the frst of several holidays coming up and remember if ya’ need a break - Halloween has no expectation. At the end of the day - you do what you wanna do. Even if that is crawling up with your family, watching a scary movie and eating mounds of chocolate - do it!
