lind since birth, Matthew’s talent on the piano is extraordinary. He began playing at age 3 and now at 20 years old, he is one of the hottest names in the jazz world. He is currently enrolled in the BA Jazz Studies program at Juilliard in New York City. Matthew has extensively toured the United States and abroad, performing on world-renowned stages. Highlights of this young piano prodigy include serving as the opening act when he was just 10 for Stevie Wonder’s induction into the Apollo Theater Hall of Fame and recently being featured on CBS’ 60 Minutes. This evening is sponsored by Sachs Media, Ron Sachs & Gay Webster-Sachs who have been longtime supporters of Opening Nights. I hope you’ll join me in recognition and thanks for their support of this performance. Three outstanding shows remain this season: bluegrass and Americana group Old Salt Union, jazz vocalist Veronica
Swift, and country music star Billy Dean in an intimate “Evening with Billy Dean” performance. As we wrap up our performances, we start to look towards next season. We recently announced Disney Princess The Concert, featuring some of Broadway’s brightest stars in an evening of songs, animation, and stories in Ruby Diamond Concert Hall on November 4, 2021. Mark your calendars for July 8 when we will announce the full 2021-22 Season lineup. Keep an eye out for some additional sneak peeks about what is to come next season. Matthew Whitaker Enrolled in the BA Jazz Studies program at Juilliard in New York City, Matthew Whitaker is one of the hottest names on the jazz scene. Born in 2001 in Hackensack, New Jersey, Matthew Whitaker grew up surrounded by music. His love for playing music first began at the young age of 3, after his grandfather gave him a small Yamaha keyboard. At 9, Matthew began teaching himself how to play the Hammond B3 organ. Four years later, he became the youngest artist to be endorsed by Hammond—in its 80+ year history. He was also named a Yamaha Artist at 15, becoming the youngest musician to join the stellar group of jazz pianists. In 2010, Matthew was a winning participant in the “Child Stars of Tomorrow” competition, as part of Amateur Night at the Apollo. A year later, at just 10 years old, he was invited to perform at Stevie Wonder’s induction into the Apollo Theater’s Hall of Fame. He returned
to the Apollo for FOX TV’s revival of Showtime at the Apollo in 2016, where he won the audience over with his rendition of Stevie Wonder’s classic “I Wish.” Matthew has been on national and international radio and television, including the Today Show documentary series “Boys Changing the World,” Harry Connick Jr Show, TV talk show Ellen and a segment on the most watched news magazine on television 60 Minutes. Matthew has had years of music instruction, currently studying classical piano and drums at The Filomen M. D’Agostino Greenberg Music School in NYC. It is the only community music school for the blind and visually impaired in the United States. He’s previously studied at The Harlem School of the Arts and was a member of both the Jazz House Big Band and the Organ Messengers at Jazz House Kids in Montclair, NJ. Matthew also attended the Manhattan School of Music’s Precollege Jazz Program. Matthew is currently
enrolled in the BA Jazz Studies program at Juilliard in New York City. He’s extensively toured the United States and abroad, performing on world renowned stages and festivals such as Monterey Jazz Festival, Newport Jazz Festival, Playboy Jazz Festival and Telluride Jazz Festival. International performance highlights include France, Italy, Germany, Indonesia, United Kingdom, Australia, Switzerland, Portugal, Japan, Spain, Morocco and South Korea. Matthew has performed with an array of outstanding musicians: Ray Chew, Christian McBride, Dr. Lonnie Smith, Rhoda Scott, Cameron Carpenter, Regina Carter, Jason Moran, Jon Batiste, Cory Henry, Marc Cary, Arturo O’Farrill, James Carter, Roy Ayers, D.D. Jackson, The New York Pops Orchestra and EFG London Jazz Festival at Royal Albert Hall in London, where he was a featured soloist with their 42-piece big band.
