merican artist, and the 2022 Chain of Parks Art Festival Presenting Artist, Lana Shuttleworth has focused on creativity in her work that has taken a unique path in helping adjust one’s vision from the unwanted to the appreciated, if not celebrated. Her exhibit, “Recycled Beauty,” does just that by creating a new vision of reducing waste. As cultures advance in common, humanity still hungers to return to nature where it once harmonized in flowered appreciation of life. With our lives moving at a faster and faster pace, Lana takes a slice out of time to focus on items that we’re rapidly disposing of and helps place new considerations on our value systems. Lana is using her art to help us recover our sensitivity and to reuse, recycle and rejuvenate our planet. From gutter to gallery, Shuttleworth’s work ignites a desire to recover and re-see beauty around us by reusing, recycling and revising new ways to reduce waste. Shuttleworth’s art will be featured in LeMoyne’s exhibit “Recycled Beauty” from April 21–May 28 in honor of Earth Day.

Lana Shuttleworth has crossed continents from her foundational Florida shores to the far-flung ice fields of Finland and the multicultural backyards of Los Angeles. Her unrelenting theme has been to delve beneath the surface of everyday things. Her work confronts the truth that once pristine landscapes and civilizations are succumbing to the false notion that progress is achieved through plastic consumption. Plastics are created from natural elements but are transmogrified into ubiquitous and persistent consumer products that scar both our terrestrial and our cultural landscape. Shuttleworth reconstructs this environmentally noxious material to create works of art that soar with unexpected beauty and imaginative flair. She elevates the ordinary traffic cone into extraordinary and intricate impressionistic mosaics, creating whimsical yet thoughtprovoking reminders of an aspirant return to harmony with nature. To call Shuttleworth’s work “unique” is not an exercise in hyperbole. She sculpts bold forms and landscape surfaces that are cut, carved, and assembled with thousands of slivers of plastic and brad nails. She grants redemption to these
lowly cast-off materials by transforming them into a feast for the eyes. Her work underscores her commitment to opposing the destructive razing of nature, while simultaneously elevating mankind’s sensitivity to and appreciation of nature in her art. Shuttleworth has exhibited throughout the West coast and the East coast, with reviews in the Los Angeles Times, Huffington Post, ArtScene, Florida Times-Union, Orange County Register, Art Daily, and nationwide Associated Press articles. Her artwork appeared on the covers of the Cincinnati Review and Arbus Magazine and was featured on the quiz show, Jeopardy! She graduated from Florida State University with a Bachelor of Fine Arts, and her studio is in Jacksonville, Florida.
“RE-” … A PREFIX FOR ART AND LIFE Artist Lana Shuttleworth doesn’t consider herself a recycle artist or an artivist, but is instead driven by a pioneering creativity that leads to a transformative journey from reclamation to rediscovery. Shuttleworth feels sustainable solutions should be implemented in every aspect of life, not only because it is the conscientious thing to do, but because it makes economic sense. In giving renewed life to the commonplace castoffs of our modern
world. Shuttleworth re-visions new ways to reduce waste. In both life and art, reexamining the value of the discarded, reestablishing the useful life of materials, and reducing the amount of waste generated is a redemptive way to avoid an environmental reckoning. Theodore Roosevelt said, “To waste, to destroy our natural resources, to skin and exhaust the land instead of using it so as to increase its usefulness, will result in undermining the days of our children, the prosperity which we ought, by right, hand down to them amplified and developed”. Shuttleworth’s regenerative approach in creating works of art sheds light on the reconstruction and transformation of crosscultural byproducts, translating them into idealized and whimsical landscapes, organic three-dimensional mobiles, and 17th century Japanese Netsuke style carvings. “In my material exploration” Shuttleworth says, “my chosen mediums have endless possibilities, and it is within this limitless potential that my curiosity is rewarded.
