pening Nights at Florida State University is excited to bring the very best performing arts, music, dance, comedy, literature and visual arts to our campus and community. The second half of the 2023–24 season features critically acclaimed, award-winning artists and something for everyone in your family to love. Rock n’ roll legend Elvis Costello and the Imposters will kick off Tallahassee’s bicentennial year at Ruby Diamond Concert Hall. The season continues with Canadian guitar maestro Jesse Cook and his flamenco jazz fusion style, followed by contemporary chamber orchestra Delirium Musicum. Legendary astrophysicist Dr. Neil de Grasse Tyson wraps up the month. February will feature performances with classical crossover artists Sons of Serendip at Turner Auditorium, followed by the show stopping Simon & Garfunkel Story. Dance enthusiasts will be delighted by Complexions Contemporary Ballet and the world- renowned Vienna Boys Choir. The Tallahassee Symphony Orchestra and Opening Nights will celebrate the music of the Beatles. And if that weren’t enough, GRAMMY® nominated Ruthie Foster will deliver a Texas blues show you do not want to miss. In March, the lineup continues with the best in music and stage beginning with Pink Martini, featuring China Forbes. Jazz at Lincoln Center takes center stage at The Moon with Sing and Swing, featuring renowned jazz artists Bria Skonberg and Benny Benack. Stage and screen legend Mandy Patinkin and award- winning author Jesmyn Ward will also perform. Emerging bluegrass artists Damn Tall
Building will put on a show at Goodwood Museum and Gardens. Finally, April brings multiple collaborations for the visual arts, music education, community outreach and family programs. The month kicks off with seven-time Grammy® Award winner Terence Blanchard with the E-Collective and the Turtle Island Quartet, a special partnership event with the FSU College of Music. April continues with our annual collaboration with the Chain of Parks Art Festival. Dean Mitchell is the featured artist this year. A partnership with Word of South will bring Rising Appalachia to town for a free community concert. Opening Nights will conclude its 2023–24 season with the iconic folk duo Indigo Girls on May 1. I cannot think of a better time and opportunity to become a member of Opening Nights and to show your support of our mission to present exceptional artists. These performances create a thriving cultural life in our community and create priceless educational experiences on campus and throughout the community. Ask any Opening Nights associate about these philanthropic opportunities. Thank you for sharing our season with us. We look forward to many more outstanding performances coming your way in 2024, Tallahassee’s bicentennial year.

Sons of Serendip Sons of Serendip is a musical group of four friends, who through a series of serendipitous events, came together in graduate school at Boston University. Micah Christian, a former teacher from Randolph, Massachusetts, is the lead vocalist of the group; Cordaro Rodriguez, a former attorney from Charlotte, North Carolina, is the pianist and guitarist; Nathaniel Taylor, an accomplished, classically-trained cellist; and Mason Morton, who is a former teacher from Atlanta, Georgia, is the harpist for the quartet. They hope that their music will resonate deeply with listeners and that, in some way, it will make their lives a little better—even if just for a moment.

Sons of Serendip Continued from pg. 17
In 2014 they came together to begin what they know will be a long beautiful journey of creating music that touches people’s hearts by competing and becoming finalists on America’s Got Talent, Season 9 (NBC). The group was also featured on the inaugural season of America’s Got Talent: The Champions. MICAH CHRISTIAN, a native of Randolph, Massachusetts, became interested in music at an early age. However, it wasn’t until his senior year of high school, when he earned a solo in the Massachusetts Southeastern District Senior Choir, that he realized his potential as a musician. As a freshman at Stonehill College, he decided to follow his passion for music. For the next five years, he spent his summers performing with the Cape Cod-based a cappella group, Hyannis Sound, and his love for music deepened. Alongside Micah's passion for music is his desire to help build a better world. He has volunteered for a year in Honduras, and a month in Calcutta, India with Mother Teresa’s Missionaries of Charity. Also, in 2013, after graduating from Boston University with a Master of Divinity,
he and his wife volunteered in a rural community in northern Peru for another year. As a member of Sons of Serendip, Micah hopes to inspire others to use their gifts to spread love and build a better world. NATHANIEL TAYLOR African-American/ Filipino cellist, is establishing himself as a passionate and charismatic performer with a variety of solo, chamber, and orchestral music engagements across the United States. Nathaniel is the Grand Prize winner of the ASTA Masters Competition (2016), Boston Conservatory Concerto Competition (2017), and has received fellowships at the Tanglewood Music Center (2017/2018) and with the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra (2018). An active chamber musician, Nathaniel has been chosen numerous times to play in the Chamber Music Honors Concerts at the Boston Conservatory in performances of Berg String Quartet Op.3, Ravel String Quartet, Shostakovich Piano Quintet, Brahms Piano Trio No.1 in B Major, Dvorak “Dumky” Trio, and Tchaikovsky Piano Trio. He has received chamber music coaching from Yo-Yo Ma, Emmanuel Ax, Pamela Frank, the Juilliard Quartet, Judith Eissenberg of the Lydian Quartet, and Norman Fischer. Nathaniel received his B.M (2015), Graduate Photo by Shef Reynolds

Performance Diploma (2017), Professional Studies Certificate (2018), and Artist Diploma (2020) from the Boston Conservatory where he studied with Rhonda Rider and Patrice Jackson. Nathaniel currently plays on a Kevin Kelly cello and a gold-mounted Salchow bow that was generously gifted to him by the Manganaro Family and Curme family. MASON MORTON was born in Atlanta, Georgia. He lived in a house full of love and encouragement with his mom, an aunt, and his grandparents. He always admired his grandparents, and he says he learned his drive, determination, and taste in music from them. His love of music was instilled early on, and quickly became a passion for him. Mason began to see his own potential with the help of his harp mentors: principal harpist of the Atlanta Ballet, Nella Rigell, and former principal harpist of the Boston Symphony Orchestra, Ann Hobson Pilot. It was their combined confidence in Mason that gave him the courage to believe in himself. After completing his graduate studies at Boston University, he is thrilled his musical journey
has led him to Sons of Serendip. It is here he has gained the brotherhood he has longed for. As a member of Sons of Serendip, he hopes that his journey will help to inspire others to follow their dreams. CORDARO RODRIGUEZ was born in Charlotte, North Carolina. He began teaching himself piano at the age of 10 and became well-versed in several other instruments as well as in music production. He has produced music for several well-known international artists such as Verbal, Kylie Minogue, CREAM, and Def Tech. After graduating from Princeton University in 2008 with a Bachelor's Degree in Psychology, he spent a year volunteering as an English teacher in Ecuador. He then attended Boston University School of Law where he received his Juris Doctor degree in 2012. At Boston University he serendipitously reconnected with his childhood friend, Kendall Ramseur, and met his future bandmates—Mason Morton and Micah Christian. As a member of Sons of Serendip, Cordaro is very grateful to have the opportunity to pursue his love for music. OPENINGNIGH T S .F SU.ED U | 2 1
