ABOUT SHANA TUCKER With a deep respect for lyrical storytelling, cellist/singersongwriter Shana Tucker delivers a unique voice through her self-described genre of ChamberSoul ™. Shana ‘s melodies weave strong hints of jazz, classical, soulful folk, acoustic pop and a touch of R&B into a distinctive rhythmic tapestry. Having opened for internationally-acclaimed artists including Norah Jones, Sweet Honey in the Rock the Blind Boys of Alabama and Indigo Girls, Shana’s vocals and cello are featured on several studio and live recording projects by both independent and signed label artists and producers. Shana’s style and sound have been described as a blend of Dianne Reeves, Joni Mitchell and Tracy Chapman with an efficient complexity that is reminiscent of Bill Withers.
PROGRAM ChamberSoul Cello & SongStories is an informance experience (information session + performance) designed to introduce students to essential song form elements (verse, chorus/hook, bridge, etc.); the relationship between melody, harmony, and lyrics; and the role of musician-as-storyteller through the art of songwriting.

VOCABULARY • Music - the artful combination of sounds and melody • Allegro - a fast speed/tempo • Andante - a strolling, “walking” speed/tempo • Beat - a steady pulse of the music • Dynamics - the variation in loudness between notes or phrases • Form - the structure of a musical composition or performance • Harmony - simultaneously occurring frequencies, pitches (tones, notes), or chords. • Largo - a slow speed/tempo • Rhythm - the combination of long and short sounds and silence organized into patterns • Pitch - the frequency (speed) of sound waves, determining a sound’s high-sounding or low-sounding pitch • Presto - a very fast speed/tempo • Tempo - in music, the frequency of beats per unit of time • Texture - the density of sound in a piece of music, usually effected by the number of instruments or voices and the relationship between their parts • Timbre - (pronounced “TAM-bur”) the characteristic sound of a particular instrument or voice, sometimes referred to as the “quality” or “tone color”
