About Nelson Mandela

Nelson Mandela was a South African anti-apartheid revolutionary, political leader, Nobel Peace Prize winner and philanthropist who served as President of South Africa from 1994 to 1999. Mandela spent many of his years in jail for fighting for a democratic and free society. In all, Mandela was imprisoned for 27 years, 18 of those on Robben Island, a rock quarry off the coast of Cape Town. After his release in 1990, Mandela immersed himself in official talks to end white minority rule and in 1991 was elected African National Congress President to replace his ailing friend, Oliver Tambo. On April 27, 1994 he voted for the first time in his life, and a few months later was swore in as South Africa’s first democratically elected President.
