NOTES

Notes on Using this Guide

Open Studios Cornwall is a celebration of Cornwall’s wealth of creative talent, and the following information will help you to enjoy that talent to the full. Each venue is clearly indicated by a Cornwall Open Studios sign – so look out for the orange O as you travel around. This catalogue is divided into West, Mid and North/East. Within each section artists are ordered geographically and then alphabetically. If you plan to visit a particular place like Falmouth or St Ives, you can look up the artists exhibiting in that area. If you intend to visit a particular artist, you can find out who else is in their neighbourhood. Remember, opening times vary and not all participants exhibit for the whole week, so check before you visit. Many are happy to accept commissions. It is important to ensure that what is agreed is confirmed in writing. Pick up the artist’s information card, so that you can contact them again if you want to add to your collection of their work. Most exhibitors will be happy to take a deposit to reserve an artwork and make arrangements for you to collect it at a convenient time. Please ensure that you obtain a receipt. Feedback is essential for the future development of Cornwall Open Studios. The artists will ask you to complete a feedback questionnaire. Completing it gives you the chance to win a bottle of Camel Valley ‘Cornwall’ Brut! Most importantly – please don’t forget your cheque book! Most exhibitors are not able to take payment by credit card – but cash will do nicely, thank you!

WELCOME

Welcome to Open Studios Cornwall 2015 When people hear I live in the far West of Cornwall, they often respond, “Oh how marvellous to live in an artists’ colony,” and I nod vaguely and agree. Despite being one of the country’s most deprived regions, Cornwall is peculiarly stuffed with creative people, and not just down here at the lumpy end of the sock. I am proud to know all sorts of painters, potters, sculptors and etchers, never mind composers and writers. But the truth beneath the romantic tourist’s fantasy is that creative people not working in collaborative media have to be deeply private for most of the time. We may be surrounded by artists but, for most of the year they are hunkered down in back

“Open Studios represents a feast of creativity and ingenuity, an unofficial network flung across one of England’s most dramatic counties” bedrooms, barns, converted garages or wherever they do their creative thing, at once longing to be distracted and deeply resenting even expected visitors. I can respect that – hiding away in a studio behind a high garden wall as I do – but my curiosity is unabated. Which is why the Open Studios scheme is as much a treat for local inhabitants as for lucky visitors. I hope there will be plenty among you who snatch up this catalogue and plan your visits with a view to buying art – each of these open studios represents a business, after all – but I know there will be plenty more who, like me, are fascinated by where the art we admire is made. Cornwall being the place it is, many of the studios are interesting buildings in their own right, or set in

astonishing, jungly gardens or up grassy lanes you’ll long to explore in more detail. Now in its eleventh year, Open Studios represents a feast of creativity and ingenuity, an unofficial network flung across one of England’s most dramatic counties. 2015 sees its biggest ever roster of participating artists: an amazing two hundred and thirty-two of them. Nobody’s likely to visit them all – there wouldn’t be time – but let’s all make an effort this year, to let this little book lead us off our usual tracks to visit somewhere new and have our horizons expanded. Patrick Gale Patrick Gale is a novelist and screenwriter based on a farm near Land’s End. His most recent novels are Notes From an Exhibition, The Whole Day Through, A Perfectly Good Man and A Place Called Winter. His two part drama, Man in an Orange Shirt is being filmed for BBC1 later this summer and he is working on a screen adaptation of Edith Wharton’s The Age of Innocence. He is a keen gardener, cook and cellist.

When I was newly fledged as an artist I was self-conscious about living and working in West Cornwall. So many artists had chosen to do so but I was here because this is where I come from, fifth generation. I have come and gone a number of times since then and am now absolutely sure I am here because of the power of the clear Atlantic waters against granite cliffs. In early spring I watch for the succession of narcissi that emerge from bracken in tiny, long forgotten fields just above the ocean. The flowers also dip their heads into streams that run golden over granite. With the coming of May Cornwall is a mass of wild flowers in blue and white and pink. They envelop the hedges so that we

all drive through an infinite bower, along a maze of roads that lead to the sea to the south, the north and the west.

“In early spring I watch for the succession of narcissi that emerge from bracken in tiny, long forgotten fields just above the ocean” It matters hugely to me that I have known this all my life, and although I may leave and return again and again, West Cornwall will remain my home, how could I resist.

It is a process of seeking empowerment, both for myself as an artist, experiencing the liberation of abandonment, but also for the life and energy I can give to my work. I use narratives as starting points, which shift easily from the autobiographic to the allegory. These allegories explore some rudimentary themes of human behaviour stemming from my own experience.

Last summer, on Maenporth beach a group of fathers arrived with their toddlers and set up camp. There was much camaraderie over a football before they set to building a BBQ out of a pile of stones. The sun was hot and the waves were breaking as I closed my eyes. When I woke the men were silent. One stood watching his child playing in the water, another was deep in concentration building a sandcastle, one walked hand in hand with his boy as the others lay in the sun, all deep in their private thoughts. Yesterday I returned to Maenporth, it was a different kind of day as dark clouds spread over the sand and the cold wind whipped in from the sea. A dog leapt out of a car, charged down the beach and sprung into the water of the incoming tide. He turned around towards the shore and promptly sat down, motionless. He stayed like this, watching, whilst the tide came in over his legs to just below his collar. He looked like a seal, far out by now, with his fixed gaze back towards his owners. Other dogs started barking

at him from the shore and he jumped up and splashed about in the water, tail wagging, happy in his world. Sometimes, on the promontory that projects westward into the Helford River, with its Monterey Pines and shimmering

“I look at the drawings I’ve made and as I begin to paint new stories emerge” reflections, a cow will come over to where I am sat drawing, sniff my sketchbook and then look out over the view as if to check that I’ve done it justice. Back in my studio in the heart of Potager Garden, looking out over the low hedges that surround the gravel courtyard, I ponder these moments and this beautiful part of Cornwall. I look at the drawings I’ve made and as I begin to paint new stories emerge. These are the things that inspire me.

I work with a variety of natural and found materials. My paintings are created from the earth and rock pigments I collect from the beaches around Cornwall. These materials are carefully recycled, reformed and refined to represent the fragility and understated beauty of the Cornish coastal ecosystem. When I first moved to Crackington Haven in North Cornwall 16 years ago it was almost as if I didn’t believe a place like this still existed: a place of furious seas and unceasing winds coupled with exuberant growth and an intoxicating biodiversity; a place of constantly changing weather patterns and shifting seasonal rhythms with the profound, underlying sense that it has been just like this for hundreds of years – primal, elemental, and wild. On the farm where I live and work, and indeed over almost all of North Cornwall, there is no flat land. Like music, the landscape is either falling or rising; from high, windswept moorland dropping steeply down through luxuriant pasture to magically sheltered valley glades, following tumbling streams through ancient woods to meet the ocean and climbing again to reach the crags of the highest cliffs. Like music again, each habitat has its own rhythm and dynamics, each pocket has its own time.

What Inspires Me... Max Burrows

It was the landscape, and the animals that inhabit it, that first brought me to

“A place of furious seas and unceasing winds coupled with exuberant growth and an intoxicating biodiversity... primal, elemental, and wild” Wooda Farm, where I now make my work and where I encourage others to do so too, in the ongoing classes, residencies and retreats that we hold. The same landscape I encourage you now to explore when you visit: head to the beaches of Strangles or Millook; the dwarf oaks on the cliffs at Dizzard; the Neolithic remains on Roughtor; the spectacular rock formations of Bedruthan Steps.
