At a time when we are overwhelmed by the challenges of the world around us, it has been a pleasure to work with Catherine Cook, David Lefkowich, Sahar Nouri, our production team, and Rocky Mountain Public Media to create a program that is filled with pure joy, humor, and a good measure of silliness. I hope you enjoy this Opera Colorado Amplified program and I look forward to sharing more music and opera with you this year.

The 21-22 Season opens with Puccini’s heart-racing drama. A corrupt chief of police has a cruel ultimatum for Rome’s most celebrated prima donna, Tosca: submit to his lustful desires, or trigger the execution of her beloved.

Based on Stephen King’s spine-chilling novel, The Shining brings the hopeful Torrance family to Colorado’s isolated Overlook Hotel. Little do they know that the Overlook’s spectral guests are determined to repeat the hotel’s grim history.

Filled with some of opera’s most iconic melodies, Bizet’s smoldering drama tells the tale of the brazen and seductive Carmen. What fate, or choice, waits for the woman no man can tame?

Q&A WITH

CATHERINE COOK

BY SUZANNE WHITNEY

OPERA COLORADO

2020-21 SEASON

Mezzo-soprano Catherine Cook is the star of the one-woman extravaganza April in Paris. We are so lucky to have such a captivating performer at the helm of our newest digital performance. Catherine has performed a wide range of roles at many leading opera houses including The Metropolitan Opera, San Francisco Opera, Lyric Opera of Chicago, and more, including performing in the much-beloved 2011 Opera Colorado production of Rusalka. Enjoy this opportunity to get to know this wonderful singer and learn what it was like creating a new digital program.

10

How did you get involved with April in Paris? In September of 2020 Greg Carpenter, Opera Colorado’s General & Artistic Director, contacted me. He had the idea for a digital program called April in Paris, which would feature Lee Hoiby’s one-act opera Bon Appétit!. From there Greg gave me the amazing opportunity to choose my own repertoire.

What connection do you have to the music in this production? I absolutely love all the music in this project, it was so much fun to put the program together. The first episode is some of my favorite French music. Some are new pieces I have always wanted to sing and some are pieces I have performed before. I tried to put together a variety of moods and styles, all centered around spring, love, and Paris. The second episode is a set from Cabaret Songs by the American composer William Bolcom. These songs tell stories in a whimsical, fun, and comical style. I’ve always wanted to do these songs staged as a character of some sort, so this was a great opportunity to play with that idea. The character we landed on for this episode is Wendy Barrie, a talk show host from the late 1940s. Finally, we close out the show with Bon Appétit! by Lee Hoiby. It is a one-woman

“It was quite emotional to be in a rehearsal room for the first time in over a year and get to make live music!” opera based on an actual episode of Julia Child’s cooking show in which she makes a chocolate cake. It’s such a joy to play Julia, and to do it while singing is so much fun! I almost feel like Julia is an extension of myself. The moment the wig goes on and I put on the shirt with the icon patch, I truly become Julia. Tell us a bit about the rehearsal process.

What was it like to perform in front of a camera instead of a live audience? It was definitely different but in many ways the same. The biggest thing about planning and creating this program was we wanted it to be something geared towards “TV” as opposed to trying to film something meant for the big stage. It felt very intimate and

vulnerable in many ways. We wanted to tell stories in a way that felt personal. One way we planned the medium of “TV” in rehearsal was setting up music stands where the cameras would be in the studio, so I knew where those cameras were. We planned which camera I would sing to or where I’d add a little wink to the audience. Ultimately, I still felt like I was on a stage. I didn’t hold back and I did the same things I would do in any live performance. What are you most looking forward to as we get back to live performance? I love the connection with the audience and feeling their collective energy. I also love making music with a live orchestra. It is magical. That is what I’m most looking forward to!  Suzanne Whitney is Opera Colorado’s Marketing Manager.

2020-21 SEASON

The process was wonderful and collaborative. I’ve worked with David many times in the past, and love working with him. He is so brilliant and imaginative and although I’ve never worked with Sahar, I’ve known her for a long time. It was such a fabulous experience to make music together. She is such an incredible musician and pianist. We put the show together in less than a week and then had three filming days at Rocky Mountain Public Media. The whole process was so joyful and fun!

OPERA COLORADO

To start with, this is the first project since the beginning of the pandemic that David, Sahar, and I had done. So, it was quite emotional to be in a rehearsal room for the first time in over a year and get to make live music! What a gift that was and to experience it with such amazing colleagues and friends.

OPERA COLORADO

2020-21 SEASON

When Greg got in touch with me about this project, I was so overwhelmed. It had been months since I’d worked on something creative and artistic and satisfying. I was so excited—it wasn’t just an opportunity to direct an opera, but to create something new with these amazing artists and colleagues.

12

While April in Paris was an incredible opportunity, it was also a bit of a puzzle. How was I to use the talents of Catherine Cook, an amazing opera singer, performer, and comedienne, and fit the selected pieces into one cohesive evening of music and joy? What stories could we tell together? I decided to begin with Julia Child. Lee Hoiby’s chamber opera Bon Appétit! got me thinking about what it means to be an icon and who the other

mid-twentieth century icons were. As that idea developed I decided to structure each of the three episodes around a different icon. It was really fun! I had a lot of quarantine time on my hands, so I spent hours researching and watching episodes of golden-age variety shows. I even interviewed a few folks in my life asking, “who do you remember from the 1940s and 1950s?” This led to a few strange answers, but ultimately I settled on three television stars. Our first icon is Ed Sullivan. He is a universally recognizable symbol of that era of television and was a great supporter and promoter of opera and opera singers. So, it made sense to set Catherine up as a performer on The Ed Sullivan Show for the first episode.

“I was so excited—it wasn’t just an opportunity to direct an opera, but to create something new with these amazing artists and colleagues.” I was so delighted and I thought to myself, “Is Cathy going to kill me for suggesting this, or is it going to be just so much fun?” Luckily, we all found the humor and joy in Wendy Barrie, and thus this fabulous character was born for the second episode! Finally, of course, we added Julia Child in Lee Hoiby’s Bon Appétit! to complete our trio of mid-twentieth century icons. It was not an easy process, but it was so joyful and so fantastic to collaborate with Greg, Catherine, and Sahar. I loved creating something out of nothing and I couldn’t be more grateful for this amazing opportunity.  David Lefkowich (Director) and Catherine Cook (Julia Child) on set for April in Paris. OPERA COLORADO

I was searching everywhere, brainstorming, and truthfully starting to get a bit anxious, when I stumbled across The Wendy Barrie Show. She was a British actress who somehow got her own talk show that debuted in 1948. It was a talk show, but as a cohort, on-air she had an aardvark puppet to chat with.

2020-21 SEASON

Then I had to figure out what to do with Bolcom’s Cabaret Songs. These were a little bit tricky. They are fun and different, but still have this poignancy about them.
