2008 Annual Report
Photos by Matthew Staver
From the General Director Our 2008 fiscal year presented us with exciting opportunities and unexpected challenges. With the entrepreneurial spirit of Opera Colorado, we took advantage of every opportunity and met our challenges head on. As part of our 25th Anniversary Season, Opera Colorado elected to celebrate in two very important ways. First, we added a fourth opera presentation to the season in the form of two concert performances of Wagner’s masterpiece The Flying Dutchman. The production was highlighted by an all-star cast including James Morris, one of today’s leading Wagnerian singers, along with Hazmik Papian, Judith Christin, and Stuart Skelton. The performances were enthusiastically received by our audiences as a fitting tribute to our 25 years of artistic achievements. Secondly, we presented our first contemporary American opera, John Adams’s Nixon in China, to coincide with Denver’s hosting of the 2008 National Performing Arts Convention and the 2008 OPERA America Conference. This monumental contemporary work served to galvanize our reputation for excellence among regional opera companies throughout the United States and brought to the Ellie Caulkins Opera House contemporary music lovers from all over the Denver metro region who are not necessarily regular opera attendees. We also had the opportunity to partner with the Colorado Symphony Orchestra under the baton of Marin Alsop to record a professional CD of our performances of Nixon in China, which will be released on the Naxos label in October 2009. Additionally, our Education and Community Programs grew to record proportions during 2008, serving more than 43,000 youth and adults throughout the state of Colorado. Through our high artistic standards and creativity, we have now maximized the current potential growth of these programs without adding additional support staff. Photo by Matthew Staver
The sudden decline in national economic conditions sent many arts organizations both locally and nationally into a major downward spiral. However, Opera Colorado wisely invested our financial resources in targeted marketing efforts. In return, we reaped the rewards by having four sold out performances for our fall production of Puccini’s Madama Butterfly. In addition, our development staff put into practice highly effective year-end fundraising campaigns which proved even more successful than anticipated. The Board and staff of Opera Colorado equate challenge with opportunity; the opportunity to re-evaluate and re-invigorate our purpose within the community, the opportunity to find new and creative ways to talk about our programs and to engage the community on a new level, and the opportunity to re-examine our finances to ensure that we remain a strong, vibrant, artistic institution now and in the future. We sincerely acknowledge the generosity of our individual, corporate and foundation supporters, along with our subscribers and single ticket buyers, who enable us to continue to nurture the art of live opera performance. Sincerely
Gregory Carpenter General Director
Opera Colorado enriches the quality of life through the presentation of opera performances that inspire our audience, and serves the community through education and cultural programs.

Education and Community Impact Educational programs for children reached a total of 21,383 children from 107 Colorado schools during the 2007-2008 school year. SCHOLARSHIPS We provided $3,825 in scholarships, allowing 3,422 students from 12 schools to attend Backstage Workshops, In School Programs and Student Matinees and Dress Rehearsals. PROGRAMS AT THE ELLIE CAULKINS OPERA HOUSE Student Performances 4,062 students from 79 schools attended Student Dress Rehearsals of La Traviata, Don Pasquale and Nixon in China, as well as a student matinee performance of Don Pasquale. Educators were provided with online teaching materials to help tie opera into their curriculum in History, Foreign Languages, Language Arts, Drama, and Music. These materials assist the teacher in creating a more complete opera experience for his or her students. Approximately 20 volunteers assisted at each student performance, helping with bus arrival and assigned group seating. The cost per child is $7.00, but we never turn a child away due to inability to pay. Backstage Workshops 527 students attended this year’s Backstage Workshops. Backstage Workshops let children learn first-hand about the skills needed to produce grand opera. The “Ellie” becomes a magical, living classroom as small groups of children move from station to station, learning about stage management, lighting, stage combat, singing, conducting, directing, wigs and make-up, costumes, sets and props and more! There were a total of 12 volunteer docents per day for five days involved in these education activities. The company (including production staff, singers, chorus, and guest presenters) provided at least 8 additional volunteers for each of these activities. The cost per child is $6.00, but we never turn a child away due to inability to pay. Student Pre-Performance Lectures 875 people attended the pre-rehearsal lectures before each of the evening student dress rehearsals. Background details and information regarding the evening’s opera were presented 45 minutes prior to the rehearsal. The lectures were free to any student or adult attending the rehearsal. TEACHER PROGRAMS Educators’ Night 488 Colorado teachers enjoyed free attendance at one of Opera Colorado’s three dress rehearsals: La Traviata, Don Pasquale and Nixon in China. Educators’ Night at the Opera is available to any currently employed teacher. Tickets are mailed in advance and seating is general admission.
Education and Community Impact Educational programs for children reached a total of 21,383 children from 107 Colorado schools during the 2007-2008 school year. IN SCHOOL PROGRAMS Opera Colorado reached 15,919 students through our outreach programs. Many of these events were subsidized by the Scientific and Cultural Facilities District, the Tier II Community Awareness Partnership, and Arts and Science in Action. Cinderella This outreach program was presented to 7,963 children at 25 performances. Complete with ugly stepsisters, a wicked step-father and a prince disguised as a servant, this abridged version of Rossini’s opera is popular with all ages and is performed by six singers and a pianist. La Curandera This outreach program reached 5,345 students at 12 student performances. This bi-lingual opera, commissioned by Opera Colorado in 2006, is written by Robert Xavier Rodriguez. La Curandera is the story of a young couple traveling to Mexico, who encounter a magic healer. This opera enjoyed acclaim by adults and children alike. It is performed by six singers and a pianist. Arias and Ensembles This outreach program reached 590 students at 3 schools. Targeting older students, this program consists of operatic arias, duets, trios and ensembles from our three mainstage productions as well as other great operatic repertoire performed by six singers and a pianist. Opera Trunks This outreach program reached 1,081 students at 15 schools this year. The Opera Trunk is filled with hands-on instructional materials for a teacher to prepare his or her students to attend either Don Pasquale, Cinderella, or La Curandera student matinee, student dress rehearsal or in-school performance. An Opera Colorado education specialist delivers the trunk to the classroom and presents a 45-minute introduction to the class about the opera and the resources in the trunk. The teacher and students then have access to the trunk in the classroom for one week. SCFD Alliance Project We have reached 1,530 students through the SCFD Tier II Alliance Project. The Alliance Project targets Middle Schools with an invitation for them to offer a challenge on how we can meet their educational needs. Combining the students’ and school’s needs with the talents and professional demands of SCFD Tier II organizations is a very large project. Some of the programs we conducted this year were “Opera Math” factoring fractions and percentages in the box office; “Just Us Guys” promoting male participation in school choir; writing for broadcast media with Opera Colorado marketing specialists; BullyProofing and Cinderella; singing with emotion; and storytelling.
