Message from the General Director

Dear Friends: Through this year’s record setting ticket sales and exceptionally strong subscription sales for the 2009-2010 Season, our patrons have sent us a strong endorsement which inspires our Board of Directors, staff, artists, volunteers and crew to respond to the needs and interests of our community with an even greater sense of commitment. Each new season brings renewed excitement and unexpected challenges. I am pleased to say that in spite of the struggling economy of 2009, our subscription sales have exceeded our expectations and the generosity of our family of contributors continues to fill us with a sense of humility and gratitude. This combined support has enabled us to enter 2010 prepared for the opportunities and challenges of a new season. Opera Colorado’s strength as a performing arts organization was further recognized by the corporate community for our service to the Denver Metro area. On May 6, 2009 Opera Colorado was presented with a Downtown Denver Partnership Achievement Award in recognition of our 25 years of artistic excellence and economic impact in Downtown Denver. This honor continues to inspire us to pursue another 25 years of service to the community through the presentation of world-class opera. 2009 was not without its challenges, and like opera companies across the nation, Opera Colorado has taken all of the necessary steps to reduce expenses while maintaining a high level of artistic quality. The Board and staff of Opera Colorado took this time as an opportunity: an opportunity to re-evaluate and invigorate our purpose within the community, the opportunity to find new and creative ways to talk about our programs and engage the community on a new level, and the opportunity to re-examine our finances to ensure that we remain a strong, vibrant artistic institution now and in the future. As we plan for our future we realize that our strength lies in our community. Opera Colorado is strong because of our loyal subscribers, contributors, volunteers and the support of the Denver community. Thank you,

Greg Carpenter General Director

The 2009 Productions The three productions presented in 2009 were as diverse in staging as they were in story-line, yet all three were connected through the strong theme of love and desire. Opera Colorado was proud to present the Rocky Mountain premiere of Bizet’s exotic and vibrant opera The Pearl Fishers. Mozart’s Cosi fan tutte gave a lively mix of simplistic stage design and slap-stick comedy that engaged opera patrons. And for the first time in twenty-four years, Opera Colorado brought Offenbach’s The Tales of Hoffmann to the stage in a new and innovative production. Page 8

Education & Community Programs Educational programs reached a total of 23,290 schoolchildren from 125 Colorado schools and 8,642 adults in Colorado communities during the 20082008-2009 season, for a total impact of 31,932 individuals. Page 12

Annual Scholarships Opera Colorado provided $4,435 in scholarships, allowing 2,255 students from 14 schools to attend Backstage Workshops, In-School Programs and Student Performances.

Student Performances Total Attended: 4,030 students from 52 schools Students attended the Final Dress Rehearsals of Madama Butterfly, The Pearl Fishers and CosĂŹ fan tutte as well as a student matinee of CosĂŹ fan tutte produced exclusively for students. Educators were provided with teaching materials to help tie opera into their curriculum in History, Foreign Languages, Language Arts, Drama, and Music. These materials assist the teacher in creating a more complete opera experience for his or her students. Volunteers are an integral part of each programs success, this year, approximately 20 volunteers assisted at each student performance, helping with bus arrival and assigned group seating. The cost per child is $8.00, but we never turn a child away from any education activity due to inability to pay.

Backstage Workshops Total Attended: 925 Backstage Workshops let children learn first-hand about the skills needed to produce opera. The Ellie Caulkins Opera House becomes a living classroom as small groups of children move from station to station, learning about stage management, design, stage combat, singing, conducting, directing, wigs and make-up, costumes, sets and props. There were a total of 12 volunteer docents per day for four days involved in these education activities. The company (including production staff, singers, chorus, and guest presenters) provided at least eight additional volunteers for each of these activities. The cost per child is $8.00.

Inquisitive schoolchildren enjoy lessons on how to conduct at one of the Ellie Caulkins Opera House Backstage Workshops.

Pre-Rehearsal and Performance Lectures Total Attended: 3,725 Student Dress Rehearsals: 600 people attended the pre-rehearsal lectures before each of the evening student dress rehearsals. Background details and information regarding the evening’s opera were presented 45 minutes prior to the rehearsal. The lectures were free to any student or adult attending the rehearsal. Performance: 3,125 people attended the pre-performance lectures. Background details and information regarding the opera were presented 45 minutes prior to the performance. The lectures were free to anyone attending the performance. Page 13

In School Programs Opera Colorado reached 15,480 students through the following outreach programs: Cinderella, The Music Shop, Arias and Ensembles, Opera Trunks, Residencies, Vocal Master Classes and the Alliance project. Residencies Opera Colorado reached 245 students through the Let’s Make an Opera residency program. Guided by an artist-inresidence, students work collaboratively to write, compose and perform their own original opera. During this intensive program, students learn about writing a libretto, music composition, singing technique, performance skills and the elements of production. The process culminates with a final performance of the opera that they worked together to create. Rossini’s Cinderella This outreach program was presented to 2,975 students at 8 performances. Complete with ugly stepsisters, a wicked step-father and a prince disguised as a servant, this abridged version of Rossini’s opera is popular with all ages. The piece is sung by six singers and accompanied by a pianist. The Music Shop This outreach program reached 4,000 students at 13 performances and 400 adults in two community venues this year. This one-act opera written by Richard Wargo incorporates a Chekhov short story, comedic action and musical quotes from popular operas (Carmen, Hansel and Gretel, The Barber of Seville, Pagliacci and others.) This work is sung by five singers and includes one supernumerary.

Opera Trunks This outreach program reached 2,180 students at ten schools this year. The Opera Trunk is filled with hands-on instructional materials for a teacher to prepare his or her students to attend the student matinee, student dress rehearsal or inschool performance. The program can also stand on its own as an arts education experience. This year we also implemented a Opera for Beginners trunk that offers an introduction to the art form. An Opera Colorado Opera Education specialist delivers the trunk to the classroom and presents a 45-minute hands-on workshop about the opera utilizing resources provided in the trunk. The teacher and students then have access to the trunk in the classroom for one week.

SCFD Alliance Project We have reached 2,845 students through the SCFD/SCC Alliance Project. The Alliance Project targets Middle Schools with an invitation for them to offer a challenge on how we can meet their educational needs. Combining the students and school’s needs with the talents and professional demands of SCFD Tier II organizations is a very large project. Some of the programs we conducted this year were in-school performances, gender roles and stereotypes, teambuilding workshop, Shakespeare coachings, poetry performance, audience etiquette and career days. A new program we offered this year utilized our performance of Cinderella to incorporate studies on comparing and contrasting different versions of the fairy tale and opera as well as studies on character development.

Teacher Programs Educators’ ight 300 Colorado teachers enjoyed free attendance to one of Opera Colorado’s three dress rehearsals: Madama Butterfly, The Pearl Fishers and Così fan tutte. Educator night at the opera is available to any currently employed teachers with limited availability. Tickets are mailed in advance and seating is general admission. HD Met Collaboration More than 300 teachers from the Jefferson County School District attended a collaborative development seminar between the Education Departments of the Metropolitan Opera and Opera Colorado. Opera Colorado worked with these teachers on building opera education into their curriculum. As a training tool, these teachers were provided with tickets to each of the season’s dress rehearsals.

Audience Development Arias and Ensembles and Art Song Recitals This outreach program reached 5,030 students at 14 schools and 1,925 adults at 18 performances this year. This program consists of operatic arias, duets, trios and ensembles from Opera Colorado productions as well as other great operatic and musical theatre repertoire. The program is performed by our young artists and accompanied by a pianist. Art Song Recitals were duet recitals and took place in Denver and Boulder. Other Special Events and Audience Development Performances this year included Season Previews, KVOD Opera 101, Fashion of Desire, Adam County Career Expo, Go Red Luncheon, Governor’s Mansion in Cheyenne, and Christmas at Governor’s Mansion in Denver.
