A Message from the General Director Dear Friends: Opera Colorado’s two most valuable assets are our programs and our supporters. Throughout 2010 we continued to present productions and education programs of the highest quality and our supporters responded generously.
Although the Denver Metro Area economy began to see some positive trends in 2010, we continued to experience the challenging effects of a slowly recovering economy in both ticket sales and in contributions. To that end, the Board of Directors, professional staff and volunteers formed a Long Range Planning Committee to evaluate Opera Colorado from top to bottom. Our process began with extensive surveying of stakeholders (subscribers, ticket buyers, board members, staff, volunteers and outsiders). The data we have collected has been highly informative and has helped us plot a course for the future which includes changes to our fiscal planning, innovative initiatives in revenue generation, and commitments to balanced budgets.
Although the 2010 year-end financial results were less than what we expected, we do feel strongly that year-by-year we are making smart decisions, both financially and artistically. We see the 2011 Fiscal Year as a year of increased opportunity to make significant positive changes to our operating model which will set us on the path of long-term financial stability.
I wish to thank our Board of Directors, staff, volunteers, ticket buyers and contributors for their loyal and generous support of our programs. With their enthusiasm we will accomplish great things and continue to be an exciting artistic force in our community.
Thank you,
Greg Carpenter General Director

2010 Productions The productions presented in 2010 were three classic Italian operas that have become mainstays of the operatic repertoire. Opera Colorado was proud to present Rossini’s comic masterpiece The Barber of Seville, and two of Puccini’s most beloved romantic tragedies Tosca and La Bohéme . Opera Colorado continued its 28 year history of collaboration with the Colorado Symphony Assciation as the official orchestra of Opera Colorado.

Education & Community Programs 2010-2011
Opera Colorado reached a total of 29,202 students and adults during the 20102011 school year through programs conducted by the Education & Community Programs department. This is an increase of 2,597 from the total number of people served in the 2009-2010 school year. Programs for students reached a total of 21,036 from 111 Colorado schools during the 2010-2011 school year (list of schools and districts served follows report). This is an increase of 926 students from the 2009-2010 school year. Community and audience development programs for adults reached 8,166 during the 2010-2011 season. This is an increase of 1,671 from the 2009-2010 season.
Page 10
SCHOLARSHIPS We provided $7,064 in scholarships, allowing 5,336 students from 16 schools and 2 community venues to attend Backstage Workshops, Student Dress Rehearsals, the Student Matinee, Arias & Ensembles and Outreach Performances. These programs were held at the Ellie Caulkins Opera House and at venues throughout the state of Colorado. This is an increase of $1,932 and 3,815 people from the 2009-2010 season. The money to fund every scholarship we awarded came from Pathways funds from the SCFD and specific grants awarded from HealthONE and the Melvin & Elaine Wolf Foundation.
FIELD TRIPS Student Performances 4,605 students from 74 schools attended Student Dress Rehearsals of La Boheme, Rusalka and Cinderella as well as a student matinee performance of Cinderella. For the first time, we conducted a talk-back with students after the student matinee of Cinderella. It was a huge success and over 250 students stayed for 45-minutes after the matinee performance and interacted with Opera Colorado staff and the Opera Colorado Young Artists. This will now become an annual experience. Approximately 40 volunteers assisted with field trips, helping with such things as bus arrival, checking in groups and assisting school groups with locating their assigned seating.
BACKSTAGE WORKSHOPS 972 students from 22 schools attended this year’s Backstage Workshops. Backstage Workshops are one of our most popular programs. We added an additional workshop this year to accommodate the increase in demand and we still sold out. This program allows students the chance to learn first-hand about the skills needed to produce opera. The ECOH becomes a living classroom as small groups of students move from station to station, learning about stage management, design, stage combat, professional singing, conducting, directing, wigs and make-up and costumes. There were a total of 12 volunteer docents per day for 7 days involved in these education activities. The company (including production staff, singers, chorus, and guest presenters) provided at least 8 additional volunteers for each of these activities.
Pre-Performance Lectures / Post Opera Talk-Backs 3,373 people attended the pre-performance lectures for the productions of La Boheme, Rusalka and Cinderella. The lectures are free to anyone attending the performance. Here, patrons attending the opera have the opportunity to hear various information regarding the composer; as well as learn the history of the time and other details. Lectures are presented 1-hour prior to the performance. For the first time, we offered two different types of lectures during the run of Cinderella. Betsy Schwarm continued to present her pre-performance lecture and we were able to use the new loft space on the 4th floor of the opera house. This left the house available for Cherity Koepke to hold a lecture that was geared more for new opera-goers and families. Having two options proved to be very successful and we are discussing continuing to provide this for future operas. Opera-goers also had the opportunity to participate in a post opera talk-back with General Director Greg Carpenter and Director of Artistic Planning Brad Trexell. This open forum allows people to ask questions and get more information about the production they have just seen. 459 people attended talk-backs this season.
Page 11
IN-SCHOOL OUTREACH PROGRAMS Opera Colorado reached 13,744 students through the following in-school outreach programs: Hansel and Gretel and Romeo & Juliet, Arias and Ensembles, Opera Trunks, In-School Workshops and the SCFD Alliance Project. Example: Opera Trunks This outreach program reached 954 students at 6 schools this year. The Opera Trunk is filled with hands-on instructional materials for a teacher to prepare his or her students to attend the student matinee, student dress rehearsal or in-school performance. The program can also stand on its own as an arts education experience. An Opera Colorado teaching artist delivers the trunk to the classroom/school and presents a 45-minute hands-on workshop about the opera utilizing resources provided in the trunk. The teacher and students then have access to the trunk in their classroom for 1 week to continue learning about the opera on their own. We saw a marked decrease in the number of trunks this year. In response to that, we have changed the way that the program is marketed and will closely monitor the response we receive during the 2011-2012 school year. Example: Humperdinck’s Hansel and Gretel This outreach program reached 8,415 students at 26 performance venues this year making it our most successful outreach production to date. Originally written by Engelbert Humperdinck, the opera was abridged by Cherity Koepke and Steven AguiloArbues. The finished product is a 45-minute opera, sung in English and performed by 5 singers with piano. The production is fully staged and costumed. Example: Gounod’s Romeo & Juliet The second year of our touring production of Romeo & Juliet saw a marked increase in demand from the 2009-2010 season. In 2010-2011 the production reached an audience of 3,987 people through 12 performances. The production brought Gounod’s opera and Shakespeare’s text together into one unique experience. Brad Trexell and Cherity Koepke co-directed the production which was updated to appeal to today’s modern audience. Example: SCFD Alliance Project We reached 388 students through the SCFD/SCC Alliance Project. The Alliance Project targets Middle Schools with an invitation for them to offer a challenge on how we can meet their educational needs. Combining the students and school’s needs with the talents and professional demands of SCFD Tier II organizations is a very large project. Some of the programs we conducted this year were vocal performance and concert preparation workshops, poetry performance and audience etiquette classes. We saw a decline in the numbers of students we reached through the Alliance Project in the 2010-2011 school year due to a decrease in tax revenue which meant a lower amount of funds available for distribution. We are hopeful that tax revenue will increase in the 2011-2012 school year, allowing us the opportunity to work with more schools and students.
Page 12
GENERATION OC In the 2009-2010 season, we began a pilot program called Generation OC. This program was (and remains) unlike any other arts education program in the state of Colorado. Students learn to apply real-world skills such as critical thinking and problem solving as they work on a project using an opera and Opera Colorado as the catalyst and framework. This program was developed in a response to the changing face of education and the new focus on 21st Century Workforce Readiness. It was more successful than we could have ever predicted. In the fall of 2010, we worked with 8th grade language arts students from Rocky Heights Middle (Lakewood) school and in the spring of 2011 we were at Montbello High School (Denver) working with 9th-12th grade choir students. Approximately 395 students at these schools received more than 120 hours of instruction by and interaction with Opera Colorado staff and teaching artists. We are excited that Generation OC will continue during the 2011-2012 school year. Planning is currently underway for the first session to be held in the fall of 2011.
ADULT EDUCATION Arias & Ensembles This outreach program reached 1,363 adults at 20 performances this year. This program consists of operatic arias, duets, trios and ensembles from Opera Colorado productions as well as other great operatic and musical theatre repertoire. The program is performed by our young artists and accompanied by a pianist. Art Song Recitals ArtSong Recitals are special recital programs featuring each of the Opera Colorado Young Artists. We had our largest audiences yet at this season’s recitals due in large part to the buzz surrounding this year’s ensemble and targeted marketing. We reached 680 people through the ArtSong recital series.
ROMEO & JULIET – as an audience development tool For the first time, we were able to use Romeo & Juliet, one of our outreach productions as an audience development tool. During the 2010-2011 season, we reached a total of 575 adults. Plans are currently being developed to continue using outreach productions in this way.
Special Events and Performances reached 1,320 students and 1,626 adults this year. These included the Una Gran Festa dinners, CzechPoint events, the Adam County Career Expo, a performance at Governor’s Mansion in Denver, the Annual Colorado Thespian Convention, the Career & Internship Expo at Denver University, performances at the Children’s Museum, performances at the Italian Festival at Belmar and a special performance of Romeo & Juliet for the Opera Colorado Board of Directors.
