A MESSAGE FROM THE GENERAL DIRECTOR The theme for the 2012 season was “Transform Yourself,” and Opera Colorado was indeed in the midst of a transformation. Our new branding campaign by Rassman Design was officially launched and realized in our reinvigorated marketing collateral. We moved to a more compact and focused performance season with all three productions taking place between February and May 2012. To keep a presence in the Denver community in the fall of 2011, we initiated Sideshow!, an opera cabaret program featuring the Opera Colorado Young Artists designed to offer a lighter, less intimidating introduction to opera for potential new audiences. The circus-themed Sideshow! was based at the contemporary Studio Loft at the Ellie Caulkins Opera House, offered cocktails and light appetizers for purchase, and featured Leonard Bernstein’s Trouble in Tahiti, Lori Laitman’s The Act, and songs by Kurt Weill and Benny Andersson. Sideshow! also became a traveling show with two run-out performances at the brand new Lone Tree Arts Center. The 2012 Sideshow! included Gallantry, a spoof on the 1950’s soap opera complete with commercial interruption, by Douglas Moore, and songs of William Bolcom and Cole Porter. The 2012 main stage season was a strong one with Mozart’s The Marriage of Figaro and Verdi’s Il Trovatore, but the pinnacle was our staging of the Rocky Mountain Regional Premiere of Daniel Catán’s Florencia en el Amazonas. The story follows the great opera singer Florencia Grimaldi on her journey up the Amazon River to the opera house in Manaus where she hopes to meet her long lost lover, Cristóbal. Like Rusalka in 2011, this innovative production utilized video projection throughout to transform the scene into a visual spectacle. The subject and setting of Florencia paved the way for a number of successful collaborations within the Denver arts and Latin American communities. Opera Colorado’s Education & Community programs flourished, reaching over 35,000 students and adults across the Rocky Mountain region during the 2011-2012 school year. Field trips to the Ellie Caulkins Opera House for the student matinee and dress rehearsals, and in-school programs like workshops, Opera in a Trunk, and the innovative Generation OC, are introducing children to opera for the first time and working towards building a life-long appreciation for all the arts. 2012 has been an exciting season as we embarked on our transformation, and we are grateful for the tremendous support of our community, Board of Directors, and volunteers in making it all possible. Sincerely,
Greg Carpenter General Director
2012 PRODUCTIONS Opera Colorado’s 2012 Season featured three main stage productions in the Ellie Caulkins Opera House at the Denver Performing Arts Complex, as well as an opera cabaret, Sideshow!, at The Studio Loft at the Ellie Caulkins Opera House. The main stage season began in February 2012 with Mozart’s comedic masterpiece The Marriage of Figaro. In March/April, we produced the Rocky Mountain Regional Premiere of Daniel Catán’s Florencia en el Amazonas, Opera Colorado’s first Spanish-language opera, in a co-production with Utah Opera. The season ended in April/May with Verdi’s haunting drama Il Trovatore. The newly-formed Opera Colorado Orchestra and the Opera Colorado Chorus supported our acclaimed soloists to create some of the most memorable moments in Opera Colorado history.

EDUCATION & COMMUNITY PROGRAMS 2012-2013 Opera Colorado reached a total of 35,683 students and adults during the 2012-2013 school year through programs conducted by the Education & Community Programs department. This is an increase of 36 from the 2011-2012 total. Given the challenges the company faced during the first 5-months of 2013, when the bulk of our programs took place, reaching numbers over 35,000 for another season, and in fact seeing a slight increase, is a testament to the demand and viability of our programs. Programs for students reached a total of 27,678 from 113 Colorado schools during the 2012-2013 school year. This is an increase of 6,728 students from the 2011-2012 school year. This increase is the result of an improved visibility in marketing, selling out of the Backstage Workshops, reaching larger student audiences on tour and heavily booking in-school programs during April and May. Community and audience development programs for adults reached 8,005 during the 2012-2013 school year. This is a decrease of 6,692 from the 2011-2012 school year. This decrease can be directly attributed to the number of adults that we reached during the festival surrounding Florencia en el Amazonas. Participating in festivals such as the one held in 2012 allows us to collaborate with our arts and cultural partners and reach significantly greater numbers. SCHOLARSHIPS We provided $6,906.00 in scholarships, allowing 3,036 students/adults from 17 schools and 2 community venues to attend Backstage Workshops, Student Dress Rehearsals, the Student Matinee, Arias & Ensembles and In-School Performances. These programs were held at the Ellie Caulkins Opera House and at venues throughout the state of Colorado. The money to fund every scholarship we gave out came from Pathways funds from the SCFD and specific grants awarded to us from various corporate sponsors and foundations. FIELD TRIPS / EDUCATOR PROGRAMS 3,617 students and educators from 65 schools attended Student Dress Rehearsals of Romeo and Juliet and Don Giovanni, as well as a student matinee performance of Romeo and Juliet. The educators who participated were teachers that attended our Teacher Workshop in the fall of 2012 or accompanied their students to the events. This overall total is lower than previous years due to the postponement of The Scarlet Letter, which reduced the number of Student Dress Rehearsals we offered. We also saw lower attendance to the Student Dress Rehearsal of Don Giovanni which took place during Spring Break in Colorado. For the third year, we conducted a talk-back with students after the Student Matinee of Romeo and Juliet. Enthusiasm and attendance for the event continues to grow. Approximately 650 students stayed for 45-minutes after the matinee performance and interacted with Cherity, the Young Artists, the conductor and members of the crew. Approximately 38 volunteers assisted with field trips, helping with such things as bus arrival, checking in groups and assisting school groups with locating their assigned seating.
EDUCATION & COMMUNITY PROGRAMS 2012-2013 BACKSTAGE WORKSHOPS 824 students from 17 schools attended this year’s Backstage Workshops. Backstage Workshops maintained their position as one of our most popular programs. For the first time, we tried holding a workshop in the afternoon to allow schools who could not attend the 10:00-12:00 sessions the opportunity to participate. The afternoon workshop sold out and we received very positive feedback. During our 2014 season, we will offer both morning and afternoon sessions on specific dates. This will allow us to conduct the number of workshops necessary to meet demand while fitting into the season’s tight production schedules. Backstage Workshops are unique. These programs allow students the chance to learn first-hand about the skills needed to produce opera. The ECOH becomes a living classroom as small groups of students move from station to station, learning about stage management, design, stage combat, professional singing, conducting, directing, wigs and make-up and costumes. There were a total of 8-10 volunteer docents per day and the company (including production staff, singers, Education Committee members, and guest presenters) provided at least 5 additional volunteers for each workshop. PRE-PERFORMANCE LECTURES / POST OPERA TALK-BACKS 1,605 people attended the Pre-Performance Lectures and Post Opera Talk-Backs for the productions of Romeo and Juliet and Don Giovanni. Talk-backs were also held in the fall of 2012 for Sideshow!. Pre-Performance Lectures are free to anyone attending the performance. Here, patrons attending the opera have the opportunity to hear various information regarding the composer; as well as learn the history of the time and other details. Lectures are presented 1-hour prior to the performance. Additionally, patrons have the opportunity to stay after the performance and participate in an interactive Post Opera Talk-Back with Greg Carpenter and Brad Trexell. Cherity Koepke Brad held talk-backs during Sideshow!. Also free of charge, these talk-backs provide a way for us to connect with our audience immediately after they have seen a performance and answer any questions they may have. IN-SCHOOL PROGRAMS Opera Colorado reached 12,356 students and 4,269 adults through the following in-school programs: The Barber of Seville, Carmen, Arias & Ensembles, Opera Trunks, and the SCFD Alliance Project. This is an increase of 2,269 students and 2,507 adults from the 2011-2012 season. This noteworthy increase is due to a focused effort to use our two touring productions as outreach to not only students, but adults. Example: Rossini’s The Barber of Seville This outreach program reached 8,510 students and 590 adults at 29 performance venues in the 2012-2013 school year. In its first year as a touring production, The Barber of Seville saw great success. It has been performed more than any previous touring production in its opening year. We have received very positive feedback on every aspect of the production from the quality of the performers to the sets and costumes themselves. The abridged version will continue its run for a second year in January-May 2014.
EDUCATION & COMMUNITY PROGRAMS 2012-2013 Example: Bizet’s Carmen In the second and final year of our touring production of Carmen we reached 1,349 people. Carmen has been successful in allowing us to reach older audiences though our “Opera on Tour” program. With the end of this school year, Carmen has been retired for the time being. In 2014, we were set to begin a new touring production of The Scarlet Letter, specially abridged by Lori Laitman. In an effort to be as fiscally responsible as possible, we changed our plans and will now bring back our touring production of Romeo and Juliet. This allows us to bring back an audience favorite without having to build a new production. Example: Arias and Ensembles We reached 3,520 adults through the Arias and Ensembles program. This program is by far our most popular with adult audiences. Programmed with selections from opera, musical theatre, artsong as well as cabaret and jazz standards, Arias and Ensembles is a concert-style program. Each piece is performed as if the audience were seeing it on the stage, but without the use of sets, props or costumes. Cherity and the Young Artists provide introductions for each selection to engage the audience and provide details that aid in their understanding of the piece. This program is one of our best tools to connect directly with adult audiences and market our mainstage productions through what we do in the community. GENERATION OC Approximately 928 students at 3 schools were reached through our residency program, Generation OC. This is an increase of 691 from the previous year. Students involved received more than 375 hours of instruction by and interaction with Opera Colorado staff and teaching artists. The program continues to adapt to the changing needs of education and is gaining attention outside of the metro area. In June 2013, Cherity has been invited to teach at the 2013 Arts Education Leadership Institute, Mapping New Terrain: Arts Applied. The institute will be held at the University of Northern Colorado and attended by educators from the Rocky Mountain region. Gen OC will be featured in several workshops as well as a keynote address. Gen OC provides participants the opportunity to learn and apply real-world skills such as critical thinking and problem solving. Students work on a project using Opera Colorado as the catalyst and opera as the framework. There are currently two different tracks being offered, Marketing and Page to Stage. In the fall of 2012, we worked with 8th grade language arts students from Rocky Heights Middle School, our pilot program school. Because of the faculty’s experience with the program and the collaborative nature of the school, the work that we do with Rocky Heights each year will ensure that Generation OC is aligning with state standards and we are continuing to meet the needs of Colorado’s students and teachers. In the fall of 2012 we also conducted the first of two programs at Elizabeth Middle School working with 8th grade drama students. The second was held in the spring of 2013. In another new venture, we worked with the same school in two different semesters using two different operas as the focus. The goal was to see if the program was transferrable using the same framework for each term. We found that while many of the building blocks of the program could be transferred and did not need to be recreated, other elements of the program needed to be tailored for each specific term. The programs at Rocky Heights Middle School and Elizabeth Middle School were both Marketing tracks. While the programs were successful at both Rocky Heights and Elizabeth, there was far greater support and involvement from the faculty, administration and community at Rocky Heights. This could be seen in the quality of the final projects as well as the attendance at the final receptions. After meeting with the lead teacher and
EDUCATION & COMMUNITY PROGRAMS 2012-2013 the administration at Rocky Heights, we will be undertaking a new challenge in the fall of 2013. In an effort to make the program experience as “real-world” as possible, students will be given a choice on which opera they market, or to market an entire season. We will also add in additional writing projects, such as press releases, which will actually be used by the district’s press office. This will again be quite an undertaking, but we believe that it will add greater viability to the program and strengthen the skill set of the students who participate. In January of 2013, we conducted our first Gen OC program in the Page to Stage track. Working with high school students at Frontier Charter Academy in Greeley, students took the classic novel, The Scarlet Letter, and created an original performance piece. Cherity served as the lead teacher, librettist and stage director and worked closely with the students as they wrote the libretto and music. The students then broke into production teams and built the sets, props and costumes. All of this work took place in just 5 days. As the program moved into the final phase, students met for a total of 3 rehearsals, putting the final touches on the performance. The program culminated in a onenight-only performance of the piece the student’s had written, entitled The Scarlet Secret. The audience was near capacity. The program was an overwhelming success and gained the attention of the community and local press. Through programs such as Gen OC, Opera Colorado remains at the forefront of innovative arts education programming. In an age where other arts organizations are loosing ground with schools because their programs no longer meet education standards, Opera Colorado’s programs continue to be in demand. Gen OC is funded though several grants including the Sydney E. Frank Foundation. We sincerely thank them for their generosity, and helping ensure this program continues. SPECIAL EVENTS AND PERFORMANCES We reached a total of 11,884 people this year through special events and performances (9,953 students and 1,931 adults). This is where the decrease in adult numbers can be seen from the events we participated in during Florencia en el Amazonas. We did see an increase in student numbers in this area. This is due to Opera Colorado being asked to participate in career fairs for middle and high school students. We are one of the only arts organizations willing to participate and the need is great. In year’s past, we participated in 1-2 career fairs. During the 2012-2013 season, we participated in 5 and were specially invited to all but one. Other special events included the annual Colorado Thespian Convention, a performance for Denver Health, performing at the Fine Arts Foundation Jubilee honoring Shirley Smith and the 2012 Opera Colorado Gala. A NOTE ON NUMBERS When comparing this year’s annual report to the 2011-2012 report, you will again notice that our numbers have shifted; increasing in some areas while decreasing in others. This is normal activity that we see each year. Our goal as things begin to stabilize is to reach a good balance between the number of students served and the number of adults served. This balance is critical to maintaining good relationships with schools as well as the community. It is also imperative that we not try to increase our numbers simply for the sake of numbers. The goal needs to be to reach as many people as we can while maintaining the quality of our programs and safeguarding the health of our staff and Young Artists.
