This traditional production and stunning music will bring to life both the clash of cultures and her ultimate sacrifice. “ Madame Butterfly is the role for me. Singing this role is more difficult than some of the other roles I feel. There is always a great challenge not only from the vocal technique but also from the character’s dramatic transformation and body movement. ”

This new Opera Colorado production focuses on the triumph of good over evil and what we do when faced with difficult decisions. “ Armed with a silvery, precisely aimed voice, natural stage presence and the kind of beautifully detailed acting you don’t see often enough on the operatic stage, McKay turned in a smart, sexy and thoroughly charming performance.”

DOMINIC ARMSTRONG Arthur Dimmesdale

MAY 2016 7 | 10 | 13 | 15

Love finds a voice in our world premiere of The Scarlet Letter, a dramatic new adaptation of Nathaniel Hawthorne’s classic novel with libretto written by Colorado’s Poet Laureate David Mason. It’s a morality play of rigid judgment, heart-wrenching betrayal and redemptive love brought to life through stunning performances, dramatic set design and incredible music. Like Hester, you’ll discover that sin, while a failing, is essential to the human experience. “ To create one of the best-known characters from American literature will be a thrilling opportunity. Especially as she is delineated through the deft lyricism of Lori Laitman’s score…a sheer luxury!”

– ELIZABETH FUTRAL, SOPRANO Sung in English with English and Spanish subtitles at every seat.

The Scarlet Letter is sponsored by Ken and Donna Barrow, Dave and Pam Duke, Noël and Thomas Congdon, National Endowment for the Arts and Opera America.

The 2015-2016 Season is sponsored by Ken and Donna Barrow.

IT IS A PLEASURE TO PRESENT FOUR EXCITING OPERAS OVER THE NEXT TWO YEARS THAT REPRESENT THE FULL SPECTRUM OF HUMAN EMOTION. From hearts that burst with joy to those destroyed by shame and grief, Madama Butterfly, The Magic Flute, Aida and The Scarlet Letter contain the perfect marriage of remarkable music and gripping human drama. Likewise, they represent 225 years of opera history. From the world premiere of Mozart’s The Magic Flute in 1791 to the world premiere Lori Laitman’s The Scarlet Letter in 2016, the repertoire I have selected spans the full gamut of styles, revering the time honored traditions of the operatic art form while expanding its boundaries with new work. Whereas opera brings together many great art forms – music, drama, scenic art and dance – it is also the most expensive to produce. Over 200 individuals can be employed for one opera production, from singers, directors, conductors and orchestral musicians, to stage hands, costume and wig personnel and supertitle operator. Each of these individuals play an important role in making your opera going experience memorable. I hope that you will take the opportunity TODAY to join our family of season ticket holders and contributors. While growing our audience helps ensure that each of our performances have a full house, the income derived from ticket sales only covers approximately 40% of the cost of an opera production, leaving the remaining 60% to be attained through contributions from generous donors. That’s why your tax-deductible gift is so important to maintaining high artistic standards and resilient finances. Join us today and experience the passion and excitement of Opera Colorado.

GREG CARPENTER General Director
