WELCOME TO GALA 2013! I AM THRILLED THAT YOU HAVE CHOSEN TO SPEND YOUR EVENING CELEBRATING AND SUPPORTING OPERA COLORADO. Improving the quality of education has certainly been on everyone’s mind of recent and that is why we are here tonight – to provide funding so that schoolchildren throughout our community can enjoy the creativity and artistic expression that the performing arts inspire, which is so essential to a well-balanced education. Annually, Opera Colorado provides cutting-edge arts education programs to more than 27,000 school-age youth, and enlightens and entertains an additional 8,500 adults through our community engagement initiatives. Your support this evening is vital to building these programs so that they are accessible to everyone. I want to thank Suzanne Bucy and the entire Gala Committee for their leadership of Gala 2013, and to all of those in the community who have contributed to this evening. Their tireless efforts in organizing this evening’s festivities and the support of everyone here tonight will generate a loud voice for arts education in our community. Sincerely,

Greg Carpenter General Director 3

ELIZABETH FUTRAL SOPRANO American soprano Elizabeth Futral has established herself as one of the world’s leading sopranos. With her stunning vocalism and vast dramatic range, she has embraced a repertoire that ranges from the Baroque to world premieres. During the 2013/2014 season Futral explores an array of diverse repertoire. She joined the Lyric Opera Center for American Artists at the Lyric Opera of Chicago, won the Metropolitan Opera National Council auditions in 1991 and was catapulted to stardom with critically acclaimed performances of Delibes’ Lakmé at the New York City Opera in 1994. Since that time she has returned to the Metropolitan Opera and the Lyric Opera of Chicago, and has notable relationships with the Washington, Houston, Santa Fe, Los Angeles, New York City, Vancouver and Minnesota opera companies. Futral will sing the role of Hester Prynne in Opera Colorado’s professional premiere of The Scarlet Letter in the 2015-2016 season.

ALLAN ARMSTRONG PIANO Allan Armstrong is a highly sought-after collaborative pianist specializing in both instrumental and vocal repertoire. In 2009, Allan was an artist-in-residence at the Arrigo Pedrolla conservatory in Vicenza, Italy where he performed solo, chamber, and lieder recitals. Other recent credits include concert tours of Japan and the premiere performance and recording of the newly revised opera Bluebeard’s Castle by Bela Bartok, prepared under the auspices of the composer’s son, Peter Bartok. He has shared the stage with renowned opera singers Sherrill Milnes, Mignon Dunn and the late Jerry Hadley in masterclasses and recitals. In the fall of 2011, Allan appeared with Opera Colorado’s production of Sideshow as a pianist/music director.

During the 2012-13 school year, Opera Colorado’s Education & Community Engagement Programs touched the lives of 35,683 children and adults throughout Colorado and southern Wyoming.

OPERA ON TOUR

OPERA IN OUR SCHOOLS AND COMMUNITIES

OPERA COLORADO YOUNG ARTIST PROGRAM

The Young Artists are at the core of our Education & Community Engagement Programs. Selected through a highly competitive audition process, these talented performers further their professional development by bringing opera to thousands of people in the Rocky Mountain Region.

GENERATION OC

Designed to develop 21st-Century Workforce Readiness Skills, this residency program allows students in grades 6-12 to explore careers in the arts. Students go behind the scenes of Opera Colorado while working in all aspects of the company including artistic, development, marketing and education and outreach.

OPERA IN A TRUNK

A steamer trunk filled with costumes, props and activities brings Opera Colorado to life! The program includes an interactive presentation and teacher study guide.

Students experience the backstage magic of the Ellie Caulkins Opera House through hands-on stations and learn about design, costuming, special effects, professional opera singing and choreography.

Often the first introduction an elementary or middle school student will have to opera, abridged operas are by the Young Artists for schools and communities throughout Colorado that have limited access to professional cultural opportunities.

ARIAS AND ENSEMBLES

A program targeted to adults, the Young Artists perform repertoire ranging from operatic arias to selections from musical theatre and cabaret.

STUDENT MATINEE

The Young Artists perform a special matinee of Opera Colorado’s mainstage productions at the Ellie Caulkins Opera House for students in the Denver Metro Area.

STUDENT DRESS REHEARSAL

Students in grades six and above attend mainstage production dress rehearsals to experience a professional opera performance and a “night at the opera” in a relaxed and comfortable setting.
