2013-2014 OPERA COLORADO EDUCATION & COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT
YOU CAN’T SPELL “PASSION” WITHOUT “OPERA”...
CHERITY KOEPKE Director of Education & Community Engagement

...Well, you can. But really, what art form is a better showcase for human emotion? From its fantastic plots and sweeping scores, to its soaring high notes or those quiet shimmers that make your hair stand on end, opera becomes a window to our human lives. Sometimes the scene in that window is beyond sense, even nonsense, but as W. H. Auden once said so well, “...people do not sing when they are feeling sensible.” Step into Opera Colorado’s world, a place where every discipline, skill and talent collide to create memorable and engaging learning experiences. Opera utilizes and links a wide variety of curriculum; from history to art, language to movement, culture to leadership and team building. Regardless of the subject you teach or the event that you are planning, Opera Colorado’s Education & Community Engagement programs will never fail to enliven minds and expand horizons. Providing teachers and leaders with resources such as professional development opportunities, standards-based curriculum materials and support from teaching artists, our goal is to enrich hearts and minds across the state through our world-class programs. Opera, this art that we know and love so well, can take us on amazing journeys. Join us in our adventures! Oh, the places we will go... All the best, Cherity Koepke

OPERA ON TOUR
The Opera Colorado Young Artists hit the road with abridged performances sung in English, of two exciting operas, back by popular demand the hilarious comedy, The Barber of Seville and the returning audience favorite, Romeo and Juliet.
ROMEO AND JULIET
BY CHARLES GOUNOD | Grade Level: 6th and Up
“In fair Verona where we lay our scene.” Journey with us as we present the world-famous love story of Romeo and Juliet. Gounod’s opera is based on the play by William Shakespeare. Follow the “star-crossed lovers” Romeo and Juliet as they meet and fall in love, choosing to risk everything for each other. What lesson can be learned from their actions? The story unfolds through gorgeous music as well as scenes from Shakespeare’s original text and is sung in English. Updated staging and costumes help audiences of today relate to a story written long ago – that is still relevant and important. A wonderful tool when teaching literature, or discussing difficult social subjects, this one-act opera can also be paired with an In-School Workshop on Shakespeare.
THE BARBER OF SEVILLE
BY GIOACHINO ROSSINI | Grade Level: All Ages
Figaro, Figaro, Fiiiiiigaro!! Barber by day, matchmaker by night, Figaro puts his charm to work as he helps Count Almaviva woo the beautiful Rosina. She’s such a catch that her guardian keeps her under lock and key with the intent of marrying her himself. But no challenge is too great for Figaro’s madcap schemes! Filled with some of opera’s most famous tunes, this is a comedy not to miss!
