from the general director Fiscal Year 2014 has been marked by significant challenge and success, and focused on six areas of development: • pre-approving budgets for future seasons before commitments have been made to specific programming and artists, ensuring that we live within our means • engaging one-time contributors to our special Stories That Sing Campaign and activate them to become regular Annual Fund Contributors • programming repertoire to maximize sales potential and present them in both traditional and innovative ways • generating events around our mainstage productions which engage current and new audiences • creating community engagement activities which take opera out of downtown Denver and into the community • seeking out new board members to bring new ideas and generate increased funding) I am pleased to say we achieved success to greater or lesser extent in all six areas. While we kept very tight control over our expenses, we exceeded our goals in Annual Fund support, as well as ticket sales – ending our fiscal year with a $231,000 surplus. This coupled with our $98,000 surplus from FY 2013, has allowed us to pay off nearly half of the debt we incurred in December of 2012. Our challenges have been focused more on maintaining our commitment to the community through education and community engagement programs and collaborations while working with a greatly reduced staff. In 2012-2013 we employed a full-time staff of fourteen and in 2013-2014 we reduced our full-time staff to eight. While we are pleased with the quality of our performances and our ability to maintain the integrity of our programs, we acknowledge that we cannot expand our reach until we rebuild our staff and offer new, exciting experiences to our patrons and students. With the financial success of FY2014, we can begin to envision a more robust future for Opera Colorado. We acknowledge the extraordinary generosity of our Board of Directors and patrons in helping us to achieve our goals and we look forward to an exciting future for Opera Colorado. Sincerely,

Greg Carpenter, General Director

2014 productions Opera Colorado’s 2014 season featured two main stage production in the Ellie Caulkins Opera House at the Denver Performing Arts Complex. The main stage season began on March 15 with the opening of Rigoletto by Giuseppe Verdi. The Denver Post stated, “Opera returned to Denver last weekend after nearly a year off, and it was — as they say in the business — grand to have it back. Even better because the production of “Rigoletto” at the Ellie Caulkins Opera house felt just right for the moment…. There are a lot of reasons to go see this opera, and supporting a community resource is just one of them.” The season continued in March with a new production of Carmen, directed by Katherine Belcher. The Daily Camera stated, “Opera Colorado’s production of Bizet’s “Carmen,” which opened Saturday at the Ellie Caulkins Opera House in Denver, is filled with passionate acting and dancing, not just singing….Mezzo-soprano Sandra Piques Eddy plays the extraordinarily demanding title role with shattering impact. From the famously seductive Habanera and Seguidilla in Act I, through the virtuosic Bohemian Dance and Castanet Song in Act II, Eddy is sensual and intoxicating. Not only is her voice luxuriantly radiant, she effortlessly combines magnificent singing with spectacular dancing...the production may be minimalist, but the performances are certainly not.” The 2014 Young Artists also received praise for their performances in Carmen. “The secondary roles in “Carmen” are unusually significant, and Opera Colorado makes fine use of its young artists in these roles. Colleen Jackson and Louise Rogan are delightful as Carmen’s gypsy friends. Jared Guest and Brett Sprague make the very most of their stage time, hamming it up as a pair of smugglers. Benjamin Sieverding has a surprising depth as José’s captain Zuniga.” – Daily Camera

development and marketing FUNDRASING

The Annual Fund campaign was strong in 2014; with a year-end surplus of $75,000.00 over projections. Total Annual Fund in FYE 2014 was $1,525,500.

RIGOLETTO AND CARMEN TICKET SALES

WEBSITE

In June 2014, Opera Colorado launched a newly redesigned website. This new website drastically improved the navigation and functionality of the website, both in terms of the end-user experience and in terms of website routine maintenance and operations. In preparation for transitioning to Tessitura in the 2014-2015 season, this renovated website upgrade provided crucial improvements for upcoming compatibility with Opera Colorado’s systems and database.

UPCOMING SEASONS

In March 2014, Opera Colorado launched a season ticket renewal campaign for the 2014-2015 and the 2015-2016 season, unveiling and offering season ticket buyers the opportunity to renew two seasons at once. This campaign met with success and approximately one third of Opera Colorado’s season ticket holders chose to renew two seasons at this time.

ADVERTISING

The 2014 season was advertised on/in 5280 Magazine, CBS4, Colorado Public Radio, The Denver Post, Rocky Mountain PBS and Yellow Scene Magazine among others.

education & community engagement Opera Colorado’s Education & Community Engagement Department reached a total of 31,561 students and adults during the 2013-2014 season. Cuts in the 2014 budget, and the Young Artists program being shortened from seven to only five months, resulted in this year’s total number being approximately 4,000 lower than the previous year. Programs for students reached a total of 25,740 from 87 Colorado schools (list of schools and districts served follows). All student programs for FYE14 sold out, except for the Rigoletto Student Dress Rehearsal, which took place during some school’s spring break. Community and audience development programs for adults reached 5,821.

SCHOLARSHIPS

Opera Colorado provided $5,195.00 in scholarships, allowing 3,032 students/ adults from 12 schools and two community venues to attend Backstage Workshops, Student Dress Rehearsals, the Student Matinee, Arias & Ensembles and In-School Performances. The money to fund every scholarship given came from Pathways funds from the SCFD and specific grants awarded to Opera Colorado from various corporate sponsors and foundations.

FIELD TRIPS/ BACKSTAGE WORKSHOPS/ PRE-PERFORMANCE LECTURES

4,692 students and educators from 70 schools attended Student Dress Rehearsals of Rigoletto and Carmen, and the student matinee performance of Carmen. Both the Student Dress Rehearsal and the Student Matinee of Carmen sold out. 700 students attended the talk-back following the Student Matinee, and 42 volunteers assisted with these events at the Ellie Caulkins Opera House. 1,017 students from 15 schools attended this year’s 1,130 people attended the Pre-Performance Lectures for Rigoletto and Carmen. This season post-performance talk-backs for mainstage performances were not offered.

education & community engagement

IN-SCHOOL PROGRAMS

Opera Colorado reached 8,138 students and 3,090 adults through the following in-school programs: The Barber of Seville, Romeo & Juliet, Arias & Ensembles, Opera Trunks and the SCFD Alliance Project Rossini’s The Barber of Seville This outreach program reached 6,075 students and 645 adults at 23 performance venues in the 2013-2014 school year. In its second year as a touring production, The Barber of Seville again saw great success. Opera Colorado received very positive feedback on every aspect of the production from the quality of the performers to the sets and costumes themselves. Gounod’s Romeo & Juliet Romeo & Juliet reached 2,065 people, with more than half being adult audiences. Having one touring production geared towards older audiences has been successful in allowing the company to reach high school, college and adults groups though the “Opera on Tour” program. Arias and Ensembles Opera Colorado reached 1,300 adults through the Arias & Ensembles program. This program is very popular with adult audiences.

10 | OPERA COLORADO | Annual Report 2014

education & community engagement GENERATION OC

Approximately 345 students at two schools were reached through our residency program Generation OC. Students involved received more than 400 hours of instruction by and interaction with Opera Colorado staff and teaching artists. The program continues to adapt to the changing needs of education and gain attention outside of the metro area. Gen OC is funded though several grants including the Sydney E. Frank Foundation. Opera Colorado sincerely thanks them for their generosity, and helping ensure this program continues.

SPECIAL EVENTS, PERFORMANCES and PROGRAMS

Opera Colorado reached a total of 13,224 people this year through special events and performances. This is an increase over the numbers from the 2012-13 season and can be attributed to participating in several career fairs and considerable growth in our In-School Workshops program. Some notable workshops during the 2013-14 school year were “Teambuilding and Concert Preparation,” “Vocal Masterclasses,” “Character Development Workshops,” “Shakespeare in Opera” and “Opera Then and Now, A Look at Where We’ve Come and Where We’re Going.” Other special events included the annual Colorado Thespian Convention, a performance for the Children’s Hospital staff medical dinner, performing at Opera Colorado’s on-stage dinner, the Barnes & Noble Bookfair and performances in the DPAC galleria on Memorial Day weekend for the Downtown Denver Arts Festival. Family Day at the Opera For the first time, Opera Colorado performed one of its touring productions for families in a free setting. Family Day at the Opera was held in the lobby of the Ellie Caulkins Opera House on March 22, 2014. Following the performance of The Barber of Seville, audience members participated in interactive activities. Originally, one performance at 10:00AM was announced. This performance sold out* in less than 24-hours, so to accommodate demand, a second performance at 1:00PM was added. This also sold out* in less than 24-hours. Over 300 people (children, parents and grandparents) attended the two performances. A question and answer session followed each performance. This was sponsored by Denver Arts and Venues. *Since this was a free performance, patrons could RSVP for a free ticket online.
