and uncertainty around the 2020-21 mainstage season, Opera Colorado explored its first in-person event since Pagliacci closed in March 2020 through a partnership with Noble Riot wine bar. The event, called Arias in the Alley, brought a delightful (and chilly!) afternoon of music to a small group of socially-distant patrons in Noble Riot’s alley patio. Audience members enjoyed hearing mezzosoprano Michelle DeYoung and pianist Jeremy Reger in a program of opera, cabaret, musical theatre, and more. Along with the distinctive backdrop, Noble Riot provided a delectable menu of food and drink.

THE TRIAL OF SUSAN B. ANTHONY In fall 2020, ADA Artist Management approached Opera Colorado about a partnership with them and several other opera companies (Austin Opera, Berkshire Opera Festival, Minnesota Opera, and San Diego Opera) to present the digital world premiere of The Trial of Susan B. Anthony, a song cycle by Steven Mark Kohn. The October 26 premiere coincided with the 100th anniversary of the passage of the 19th Amendment, inviting conversation about the milestone of democracy, along with the work that remains to achieve gender and racial equity. The poignant work starred mezzosoprano Adriana Zabala in multiple roles,

Anthony herself in this seven-movement piece outlining the activist’s quest for justice. Zabala was accompanied by pianist Myra Huang. The performance garnered 2,762 views across all the partner organizations. In addition, the performance and supporting materials were shared with educators across the country during March for Women's History Month.

JOSEPHINE & THE PROMISE OF LIVING In March 2021, Opera Colorado partnered with Rocky Mountain Public Media to produce Josephine & The Promise of Living, a digital double-bill, as part of Opera Colorado Amplified. The free, on-demand performance began with Tom Cipullo’s one-act opera Josephine, starring soprano Laquita Mitchell as jazz-age icon and civil rights activist Josephine Baker. Following the one-act was The Promise of Living, an original multimedia program curated by Laquita Mitchell. The Promise of Living was a journey through American history, highlighting the challenges, opportunities, and successes of the Black experience. Soprano Laquita Mitchell, baritone Nmon Ford, pianist Israel Gursky, and Denver’s own Davis Contemporary Dance Company explored enslavement and exodus, war and rebellion, and the promise

APRIL IN PARIS In April of 2021, Opera Colorado shared April in Paris, the second digital production created in partnership with Rocky Mountain Public Media for Opera Colorado Amplified. This original program was a bit of delight available for free and on demand during a trying year for many. Director David Lefkowich collaborated with mezzo-soprano Catherine Cook and

humor to each of her three roles. First, she transformed into a Parisian cabaret singer to perform art songs by Poulenc and others. Next, she became the variety show hostess Wendy Barrie to delight us with William Bolcom’s Cabaret Songs. In the final episode, Cook transformed into Julia Child to perform Lee Hoiby’s one-act opera Bon Appetit! and finished the performance with the perfect chocolate cake.

DIGITAL EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMS In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, Opera Colorado’s Education & Community Engagement department adapted and innovated its impactful programming to support Colorado’s teachers and students by moving to a virtual format. Among this season’s offerings were Storytime Sessions, a

thinking through the arts and presented in short, interactive segments; and classroom workshops, which were tailored to each specific request and provided through a combination of pre-recorded and live-streamed content. As well as being available through Opera Colorado’s website, these educational programs were featured on PBS Kids as part of our ongoing partnership with Rocky Mountain PBS.

CANCIONES DE NUESTRAS TIERRAS In May of 2021, Opera Colorado and Denver Botanic Gardens partnered to present Canciones de Nuestras Tierras or Songs of Our Homelands. This festive event celebrated the rich tapestry of Latin music and our return to in-person performance. The atmosphere was electric as guests explored the gardens, discovering opera performances, works by Latin composers, mariachi, and baile folklórico around every corner. Led by Opera Colorado favorite, soprano Cecilia Violetta López, the event featured baritone Luis Ledesma, pianist Nathan Salazar, musicians

Tierra and ArtistiCO Dance Company. The evening was a true moment of community, a chance to revel in the beauty of live performance and connect to our Opera Colorado family.
