OPERA FOR ALL: The 23/24 Impact Report

Page 1

Together, come what may

As you will discover in this report, your commitment to us has worked wonders this year. Be it in terms of artistic creation, influence or community outreach, the Opéra de Montréal has once again distinguished itself, offering all Quebecers a unique experience. I stress the word “all”, given our increased efforts to diversify our initiatives and our audience. On behalf of the team, artists and artisans, thank you.

A new challenge

After weathering the storm of the pandemic, the performing arts have been facing a new challenge for the past two years: inflation. The media have already reported on the difficulty of filling theatres, as audiences reallocate their entertainment budgets to other priorities. From that point of view, we’ve been lucky: we now have more subscribers than before the public health crisis. But inflation has also had an impact on production costs, which have risen dramatically. In my 30-year career, I’ve never seen anything like it!

Despite this difficult context, thanks to your generosity, the support of our governments and our growing public, we have been able to hold fast. But we have to be realistic: the increase in subscriptions will not be enough to secure our long-term financial health. More than ever, philanthropy is the backbone of our existence.

Cautious ambition

Our vision for the coming months and years is clear: to forge ahead Cautiously, of course, but forward all the same. We want to continue creating new works — we’re one of the biggest producers of new operas in North America; we want to continue training the next generation of artists and bringing opera to our community’s most vulnerable people. Above all, we want to pursue our mission to transform opera into a contemporary art form for all to enjoy.

To achieve this, we need to be creative: multiply the number of coproductions to share costs; initiate new collaborations to expand imaginative boundaries; widen our circle of friends, artists, audience members and donors.

Onward and upward!

As the 2024-2025 season gets underway, we are already preparing for the next, with passion and gumption.

Yes, come what may, we will continue to reinvent opera, because it’s in our DNA, because it’s the only way to keep this art form thriving, and because we know we can count on your trust and support. Thank you so much for joining us on this grand adventure.

The kind of opera that reflects us, that unites us

Who is that on the Opéra de Montréal show posters? Asked aloud or not, one thing is certain: in its singular way of capturing everyone’s attention, the 2023-2024 advertising campaign left its mark.

Impact for the Opéra de Montréal

Industry-defying results:

20% increase in the number of subscribers between 2018-2019 and 2022-2023

80% average occupancy rate (tickets sold) for the 2023-2024 season

To put this in perspective, Opera America* reports:

21% decrease in the number of tickets sold between 2018-2019 and 2022-2023

59% average occupancy rate (tickets sold) for the 2023-2024 season

“This campaign clearly demonstrates that everyone can discover a love of opera. Because the stories told on stage are based on contemporary values, emotions and themes that touch us all. So the idea was to find people whose life stories resonated with the story or character in each show. For the 2024-2025 season, featuring a number of young protagonists, the Opera went a step further. In addition to featuring young people who are experiencing the same issues as the main characters, the campaign draws on the company’s own mission: all the “models” are actual participants of our projects in the community.

As reflected in the growing number of subscriptions, we can say with confidence that the Opéra de Montréal succeeds not only in engaging its audiences, but also in continuing to nurture them, season after season!”

A symphony of synergy

It takes the dedication and meticulous work of hundreds of people to make opera happen, all of whom are passionately committed to making magic performance after performance.

So let’s find out who they are!

For the 2023-2024 season, we calculate 769 people who worked to ensure the success of our shows and projects in the community. Among them are:

19 collaborators from abroad

750 Canadians

536

artists and artisans (soloists, chorus members, stage directors, assistant directors, orchestra musicians, conductors, dressers, make-up artists, wigmakers, dressmakers, costume designers, etc.)

198 technicians (stage technicians, stagehands, etc.)

In other words, the Opera plays a significant role in the economy, generating nearly eight hundred jobs every season.

Opera creation

In 2012, with the presentation of Dead Man Walking (Heggie/McNally), the Opéra de Montréal’s programming of contemporary works began in earnest.

Next came Silent Night (Puts/Campbell), JFK (Little/ Vavrek), Champion (Blanchard/Cristofer), Les Feluettes (March/ Bouchard) and La Beauté du monde, the first part of the Julien Bilodeau/Michel Marc Bouchard collaboration.

Over the years, new works have defined the company’s identity, making the Opéra de Montréal a leading figure in Canadian opera creation.

Bold storytelling

The 2023-2024 season was exemplary in terms of creation, with the presentation of La Reine-garçon and Enigma, the latter being the company’s first coproduction with France.

The theatrical version of La Reine-garçon had already won critical acclaim, and thanks to the eloquence, accuracy and strength of Julien Bilodeau’s music, the work took on an unsuspected dimension, allowing us to appreciate the greatness of our art form. Angela Konrad, making her debut on WilfridPelletier’s main stage, staged a refined production that received rave reviews.

The season’s other contemporary success, Enigma, highlighted not only the power of Éric-Emmanuel Schmitt’s text and Patrick Burgan’s music, but also the talent of the two Quebec performers, Antoine Bélanger and Jean-Michel Richer. Paul-Émile Fourny directed the show with exceptional dramatic cleverness.

The Opéra de Montréal’s raison d’être is to contribute to the creation of a new repertoire, and to play an essential role in aligning our art form with the times and the evolution of music in Quebec.

Presenting two new works this season, it’s remarkable. And it would not have been possible without our friends, audience members and the essential financial support of our generous donors. Our energy, hard work, talent and resilience are nourished by the passion and loyalty you demonstrate to us, opera after opera, season after season.

The public and critical success of our two premieres reinforces our fundamental mission: to promote opera as a contemporary art form, to showcase our local creators, and to foster the careers of rising artists and performers.

Together, we can proudly proclaim: “Mission accomplished!”

Fostering creative innovation

WMontréal natives Vickie Zhao and Alex Ionescu returned to their hometown a few years ago, after a decade spent in the United States. The young parents wanted to be closer to their family and reconnect with their community, including the arts community. “We’re both Montrealers, this is our city.”

Vickie and Alex are emblematic of a new generation of cultural philanthropists. “In Montréal, we looked for organizations we could support, and we quickly agreed on the Opéra de Montréal. Not just because it’s one of the most prestigious institutions. But because it’s one of the most creative, daring to reinvent opera to make it a contemporary art form, one that speaks to all and is accessible to all.”

Vickie and Alex generously sponsored the world premiere of La Reine-garçon.

hen you understand the importance of arts philanthropy, there are plenty of good causes to support. So why the Opéra de Montréal?

Find out with board member Vickie Zhao and Alex Ionescu.

“I applaud the Opéra de Montréal’s commitment to new works. There is a sense of loyalty and consistency in the artistic and human approach here that I really admire.”

– Jean-Marie Zeitouni, Conductor for the world premiere of La Reine-garçon

Vickie Zhao and Alex Ionescu

Coproduction and the importance of working together

Thanks to coproduction, Opéra de Montréal can reduce its financial risks, while extending the reach of its shows to a wider audience in more venues.

“Often, new works are commissioned, premiered, and then… that’s it. That’s not the path taken by Artistic Director Michel Beaulac and myself when he asked me to coproduce Enigma. In response to the lack of contemporary creations, our ambition has been, and will continue to be, to make this new opera, or all new operas, endure beyond continents and time. The success of our first Franco-Quebec coproduction is undeniable proof of this.”

– Paul-Emile Fourny, Stage Director and Artistic Director of the Opéra-Théâtre de Metz Métropole (France)

This season, the Opéra de Montréal presented three coproductions: (A) La Reine-garçon with the Canadian Opera Company, (B) Enigma with the Opéra-Théâtre de Metz Métropole and (C) La Traviata with Manitoba Opera, Edmonton Opera, Pacific Opera Victoria and Vancouver Opera.

Opera’s rising stars

Aleading artist residency for Canadian opera singers and pianist-coaches, the Atelier lyrique is a springboard for professional development at the heart of the Opéra de Montréal. Offering innovative, tailor-made training in a bilingual environment, the Atelier covers the broad spectrum of artistic, personal and professional development. With world-class instructors, regular on-stage experience and networking opportunities, the Atelier ensures that all artists can reach their full career potential.

“I dedicate my mission as a patron of the arts to supporting young talent at the Atelier lyrique of the Opéra de Montréal.”

– Vanda Treiser, board member and Major Patron of the Atelier lyrique

Nurturing each artist’s career

Our artists in residence at the Atelier lyrique learn complete roles and perform them in rehearsal, or on stage, in front of an audience, when a scheduled artist must be replaced at short notice. Such was the case this year... The show must go on, after all!

“Being called upon at the last minute to sing a dream role like Germont in La Traviata was an experience I’ll never forget.”

– Mikelis Rogers, baritone in residence at the Atelier lyrique

“The opportunity to conduct La Traviata was a transformative, positive and deeply moving experience that cannot be replicated outside of a live performance. It was a tremendous privilege to share this moment with my friends, colleagues and the audience.”

– Christopher Gaudreault, conductor in residence at the Atelier lyrique

Ongoing program development

The distinctive feature of the Atelier lyrique training program lies not only in its technical and artistic development, but also in the collaborative efforts it promotes with other institutions to offer a richly diverse learning environment. In this way, the Opéra de Montréal contributes to nurturing and sharing this art form in Montréal, Québec, Canada and beyond.

“Working with Stephen Lawless has been a world-class experience. His wealth of knowledge and brilliance as a stage director have profoundly influenced my approach to preparing and embodying characters on stage, especially those of Mozart.”

– Ilanna Starr, mezzo-soprano in residence at the Atelier lyrique

“The most inspiring aspect of being at the Atelier is the opportunity to work with a diverse group of talented coaches. In particular, I had the opportunity to work with composer Laurence Jobidon and participate in the workshop for her new opera, Le Phare

– Ian Sabourin, countertenor in residence at the Atelier lyrique

Equip. Inspire. Let them shine.

“For several years now, we’ve noticed that Atelier lyrique artists are often faced with financial challenges at the start of their professional careers. Despite their technical and artistic skills, they find it difficult to cover the costs associated with auditioning and marketing their talent. That’s why we launched the Career Development Program (CDP), which provides our graduates with significant financial support. This season, 13 young artists received a total of $23,200 in assistance, enabling them to strengthen their presence in the milieu and propel their careers forward.”

Opera with purpose

Building a community

Our aim has always been to build a community around opera, reaching out to as many groups as possible to reflect Quebec’s diverse social make-up. In 2024, the integration of a new team member was a crucial step in achieving this mission.

“This immersion in Quebec culture and classical music has helped develop a sense of belonging to Quebec among my students.”

– Éric Caron, Grade 6 teacher at École AliceParizeau, on the workshops offered as part of Une école montréalaise pour tous (UEMPT)

“I lost my sight suddenly six years ago, and I never imagined I would be able to experience opera as a blind person. I hope this won’t be my last visit to the opera.”

– Martine Bédard, participant in the adapted performance of La Traviata in May 2024

“We made all kinds of sounds, we laughed, we had so much fun!”

– Arthur, grade 1 student, as part of the activity initiated by UEMPT

“Congratulations on the boldness of your programming and your efforts to broaden and renew your audience”.

– Patrick Ouellet, donor

Opera, an art that brings people together!

Opera? Why not? Opera, by its multi-dimensional nature, can be the megaphone for those voices too little heard, and for whom music can make a big difference.

The Opéra de Montréal is convinced that experiencing an art form is the best way to access it. We use cocreation as our approach, where professional and nonprofessional artists collaborate and participate in conceiving a collective work.

“I sang with singers from the Opera. I was very nervous, I found it hard at first. But we managed. Now I’m in love with opera. You learn to sing in new languages.”

– Marie-Josée Brissette, Administrator of La Gang à Rambrou

“So many resources have been put in place for us. I’m so proud of our work, but most of all, grateful.”

What kind of schools do we serve?

Schools in disadvantaged areas, schools in aboriginal communities and specialized schools (intellectual disabilities, ASD and associated disorders).

Toward measurable wellness

We are currently developing a method for evaluating our educational and social initiatives. The goal? To put in place quantitative and qualitative indicators that will enable us to better grasp the real scope of our projects.

Over the years, we have found that assessing the impact of outreach projects is a relatively new field. How and what to evaluate? What are the relevant psychosocial and medical indicators?

With this in mind, we have added a research component to our activities, in partnership with:

The Université de Montréal (Faculty of Music). The Opera will act as co-researcher in a partnership study on music mediation.

The University of Ottawa: a study conducted by its Institute for Research in Music and Health shows that the RESPIRER and La voix harmonisée programs are associated with a significant improvement in mood.

To date, more than 500 people have participated in this research component. A first presentation of the results was made on September 17. Data collection will continue until summer 2025.

“Making friends, connections, meeting people who don’t judge me. It gives me things to do, other than thinking about what’s going wrong in life.”

With deep gratitude

To say THANK YOU is not enough to express our immense gratitude to you, dear donors. Year after year, you are the heartbeat of the Opera. Without you, there would be no performances and no new works. Without you, there would be no Atelier lyrique. Without you, there would be no collaboration with schools, hospitals and vulnerable and remote communities.

Thanks to your generosity and outpouring of enthusiasm, our 2023-2024 philanthropic report is extremely positive.

First, we welcomed several new partners to our community: the Tony & Betty Infilise Family Foundation, TD, the Cogeco Fund in support of our community and educational projects, and the LRDG Foundation in connection with the Atelier lyrique’s master classes.

Next, we ran two major fundraising campaigns, one in support of youth projects, and particularly the 20 th anniversary of coOpera, our flagship social project; and the other in support of artists at the start of their careers, with the participation of soprano Lucie St-Martin who recently graduated from the Atelier lyrique

We renewed our signature fundraising events in support of emerging artists: the Talent Gala, with a unique musical and culinary experience on the Wilfrid-Pelletier stage; and Operastar, whose 2nd edition gave artists in residence the opportunity to work with internationally renowned soprano Ailyn Pérez. These two events alone raised close to $700,000.

Finally, we inaugurated our Artistic Sponsorship program, to enable individuals to associate their gift directly with the artists of the various productions. In so doing, they support the artistic excellence of the entire company. During the 2023-2024 season, some 20 artists and three productions were sponsored, for a total of $485,000, as well as three social projects for a total of $45,000.

As the new season gets underway, your gifts continue to make a difference in the lives of many artists and beneficiaries of our projects in the community. Thank you so much! Your generous gesture makes the Opera resonate throughout our city, and we are deeply grateful to you.

A new era unfolds Governance

My first role as President is to give you the pulse of the company’s health. From that point of view, the news is good: finances are healthy, and the key indicators are back in the green. I am therefore happy to declare that, in 2023-2024, the Opéra de Montréal is officially out of the pandemic!

This positive report should not blind us to the current challenges facing cultural institutions, starting with inflation. This does not call into question the company’s mission, but it does complicate its operations.

In fact, this fall, management will begin an in-depth reflection to define its objectives for the coming years. This is a normal planning process. One thing is certain: the Opéra de Montréal’s ambition is unshakeable: to be relevant in today’s world, and to increase its impact on the arts and society in general.

The strategic decisions taken to date have been extremely positive, both in terms of brand image and results. Whether we’re talking about the desire to create new works, openness to new audiences or social commitment to the youngest and most vulnerable members of our community. Today, the Opéra de Montréal is more vibrant, vital and respected than ever.

Another great strength of the company is the philanthropic community that surrounds it. You are the magical force that turns projects into reality, against all odds. On behalf of the Board of Directors, thank you for your support, both financial and in spirit. With you, dear donors, alongside the current leadership and administrative staff, the Opera’s future is in good hands.
