Making opera relevant in the 21st century is the lifeblood of Opera Queensland, and it’s an exciting time for the art form as it interrogates both itself and its place. In the spirit of equality and access, we are creating more opportunities for gender diversity. Over the next few years, we will find ways to continue to battle gender inequality within the cultural sector and challenge this marvellous 400-year-old art form. Opera has a unique ability to pull us into deep emotional worlds that capture the intensity and beauty of life with incredible resonance. On behalf of everyone at Opera Queensland, we invite you to join us in a year of passion, drama and high-spirited adventure. It’s a year brimming with possibility, and we can’t wait to share it with you. See you at the Opera. Sandra Willis Executive Director
Planning a season is an exciting and sometimes mysterious process. Our first thoughts about what to program in 2020 began two years ago with a series of questions. What are we passionate about? What inspires us to understand our city, our state, and each other in a more nuanced way? Where are the artists creating the new works and laying the foundations for audiences of the future? How can we offer our audiences a night of music making of the highest order and productions full of wonder? We are living in a moment in history with access to the most extraordinary array of cultural practice. From the 60,000 plus years of knowledge of our First Nations people to the 400 years of opera, to the 100 years of cinema, to the 40 years of digital revolution – the possibilities for exploring who we are and how we connect are vast. Season 2020 interacts with this wealth of history in a variety of ways. Lorelei is a very funny new Australian opera-cabaret about the ancient myth of the sirens. Bran Nue Dae is the great Australian coming of age musical about a young Indigenous man learning all about love. Aida is given new life through a digital design that reimagines the idea of grandeur. And Tristan und Isolde is one of the most influential and romantic operas of them all, the originality of its harmonic language influencing everything written since.
Beyond the main stage season we are offering a recital series, inviting some of Queensland’s finest artists to put together a program of songs they love and the stories behind them. They will be performances of rare intimacy and a great chance to deepen our understanding of the remarkable art of singing. Opera as an art form contains all the others and at its core is the language that speaks across boundaries – music. In putting Season 2020 together, perhaps the most important question has been, “What do we want people to feel?” Hopefully, we have created a space for audiences to reflect on their place in the world and share in the intensity of feeling that opera provides. I want to acknowledge our relationship with our key partners, the Queensland Symphony Orchestra, QPAC and a new partnership with Queensland Conservatorium Griffith University, all of whom share our passion for great music. We are also thankful for the support of all our Donors, whose generosity makes this possible, and to our government partners at Arts Queensland, the Australia Council and Brisbane City Council. We look forward to welcoming you in 2020. Patrick Nolan Artistic Director and CEO

LORELEI You’re on a boat sailing down Germany’s Rhine River towards a particularly tricky bend. There’s no turning back as jagged rocks and merciless cliffs come into view… and yet, above the sound of torrid water and scrambling men, a song so pure calls through the fog. 4
Legend has it that three sirens – the Lorelei – sit atop the cliffs enchanting sailors with their deadly songs. The Lorelei take no prisoners as the sailors lose focus… and ultimately their lives on the rocks below. But you’ve caught the Lorelei on an odd day. Because today
they’re wondering if they’re sick of singing sailors to their deaths. Do they all really deserve to die? Can the Lorelei help being so irresistible? Ali McGregor, Dimity Shepherd and Antoinette Halloran await you for a seductive encounter where myth meets modern woman.

Set out on the road trip of a lifetime with a spunky runaway teenager, two hippies, a wily Uncle, and a German priest. By the time you shake the red dust from your feet, you’ll know what it means to come home. Jimmy Chi’s coming-of-age musical Bran Nue Dae is an exuberant ride through 1960s Western Australia. Young Willie hitchhikes his way from

mission school back to Broome, determined to win the heart of the girl he left behind. A feel-good mash-up of rockand-roll, gospel, country and blues made this musical a sparkling success in 1990. The stage is a recreation of the historic Sun Pictures open-air cinema in Broome, and the costumes are delightfully nostalgic.

T R I S TA N UND ISOLDE A landmark in western music, Tristan und Isolde’s bold use of harmony and sublime depiction of extreme emotion makes it one of the most inspiring and influential operas of all time. Starring acclaimed New Zealand Heldentenor Simon O’Neill and American soprano Meagan Miller, Tristan und Isolde is the perfect prelude to the Brisbane production of Wagner’s Ring Cycle. A story of forbidden love, Tristan and Isolde have fallen in love but Isolde is promised to Tristan’s friend, King Marke. The ensuing story of divided worlds and tragic destiny is a profound expression
of our need to be loved. Renowned for its magnificent music, Wagner’s score includes the lovers’ ecstatic duet and Isolde’s famous aria, the Liebestod, “Mild und leise”, in which she sings herself to eternal rest. This semi-staged production is conducted by one of the world’s greatest interpreters of Wagner, Pietari Inkinen. Presented with Queensland Symphony Orchestra on the Concert Hall platform, it features lighting and visuals by Mark Howett, who wowed audiences with our production of Verdi’s Requiem in 2019.

Opulent costumes and sensational visual effects reveal the glorious splendour of Egypt as it’s never been seen before. Can love conquer all? A country ravaged by armed conflict is on the verge of collapse. Aida, a young prisoner of war in love with Radames, the General of the opposing army, finds herself torn between warring parties. We watch as they attempt to fulfil their desire in a world that refuses to allow it. This Opera Queensland and Opera Australia co-production comprises a stellar cast, including acclaimed soprano Natalie Aroyan in the title role, powerful tenor Diego Torre as Radames and internationally renowned mezzo Elena Gabouri as Amneris. Adding vocal power and lustre to the mighty score are the Opera Australia and Opera Queensland Choruses.

William Shakespeare’s comedy As You Like It serves as a characterrich springboard for Jason BarrySmith’s adventurous song cycle. Jaques’ famous monologue is the inspiration for this tender and heartfelt show: “All the world’s a stage, And all the men and women merely players; They have their exits and their entrances. And one man in his time plays many parts, His acts being seven ages…”. Well-known to Queensland audiences, Jason – an operatic baritone, composer and arranger – has crafted an illuminating concert that reflects the “seven ages” from infant, school-boy and lover among others. He also adds an eighth age of his own invention to reflect his experiences as a father. In a musically rich and poetic recital, Jason’s repertoire will include Gilbert and Sullivan, Richard Maltby Jnr and Rodgers and Hammerstein.

THIS IS POWER
Patrick Nolan’s critically acclaimed Tosca tours Queensland in 2020. Often described as the greatest opera of them all, Tosca embraces the grand themes of the human spirit brought to life by the Italian master, Giacomo Puccini. Set in 1970s Italy, step back to a world of iconic style and lush glamour at a time of dramatic political and social change. Tosca, a famous opera singer, is devoted to the painter Cavaradossi but Scarpia, the tyrannical Chief of Police, has his own plans for her. What ensues is a gripping tale of lust, betrayal and cold-blooded murder that careens at breakneck pace. Antoinette Halloran headlines an all-star cast with the Queensland Symphony Orchestra Ensemble conducted by Vanessa Scammell. In a world of political tyranny and widespread intolerance, Tosca offers a timeless plea for artistic and political freedom.

JOIN US “We are fortunate to have access to great opera in Queensland, and we know it gives many people pleasure. However, we can’t take our Opera Company for granted. Worldwide, the performing arts, including opera, are being challenged by the lure and convenience of alternative digital entertainments. However, if we don’t support the live performing arts, and opera is a pinnacle amongst the performing arts, with drama, music, acting, singing, lighting, staging all rolled into one performance, we will lose the creativity and the talent, and by the time we realise what we’ve lost, that loss may prove to be permanent.” Prof Ian Frazer AC and Mrs Caroline Frazer Foundation Donors Our donors are an essential part of our company. Their personal relationship with Opera Queensland across our 2020 Season and beyond is crucial to the growth and development of our art and artists.
