THIS IS OPERA

WELCOME TO 2019

Over the past year the team at Opera Queensland, Sandra and I have asked a lot of questions about what we want Opera Queensland to be – how can we share with our audiences all that this incredible art form has to offer? How can we create opportunities for artists that challenge them to be their best? How can we build a community around us that is stronger, more compassionate and more creative as a result of the operas we make and share? This is a very exciting moment: we are ready to take the first step. Here is our 2019 season, a collection of operas, recitals, outdoor performances, workshops and classes to enliven, inspire and connect us all to a deep sense of our shared humanity. We are thrilled once again to be presenting three operas at QPAC. Orpheus and Eurydice, Tosca and A Flowering Tree span four centuries of music making and storytelling, offering audiences three very different approaches to opera. All of them are driven by love – renewed, destroyed and lost – with characters full of flaws,

passions and longings that bring them vividly to life. Arguably, the oldest of these is the most radical. Surrounding these productions is a collection of recitals, performances and workshops creating opportunities to experience or participate in exceptional music making. Be it in our own studio space for an intimate recital with Alexandra Flood and Alex Raineri or on the Gold Coast for a one off outdoor performance of Verdi’s masterpiece Requiem, we are expanding the scope and scale of what Opera Queensland has to offer. This is just the beginning; there are many plans ahead. Right now, we welcome you to join us for our 2019 season. Patrick Nolan Artistic Director

Opera Queensland acknowledges all the First Peoples of the Lands across Queensland and pays respect to their ancestors and Elders and our shared future.

JOHN ADAMS

A FLOWERING TREE Kumudha is a young woman with a secret power – the ability to transform herself into a tree covered in valuable blossoms. But sometimes rare gifts can inspire both love and jealousy in equal measure. Exploring themes of magic, transformation and the healing power of deep and selfless love, A Flowering Tree is a majestic retelling of a traditional Indian folk tale by world renowned composer John Adams. A Flowering Tree is a story for our times, brought to life in this semistaged production with exquisite video design by Mic Gruchy. This Helpmann Award winning production was first seen at the Perth Festival in 2009 and now Brisbane has the chance to see this beautiful opera. Often described as the greatest opera of them all, Tosca embraces the grand themes of the human spirit brought to life by one of the greatest composers of them all, Giacomo Puccini. Tosca, a famous singer, is devoted to the artist Cavaradossi but Scarpia, the Chief of Police, has other plans and shows no remorse in his intent to destroy their love. Tosca is a strong woman in a male dominated world. Refusing to submit to a system that wants to mercilessly exploit her, she works to tear it apart – but there’s a terrible cost. This is opera where women are not afraid to fight for their right to be equal. But how can he resist the temptation to look into the eyes of his true love? Created in association with internationally renowned contemporary circus company Circa and set to some of the most stirring music ever written; this is opera like you’ve never seen before – mixing thrilling acrobatics, exquisite singing and striking video design to take us to hell and back.

When Giuseppe Verdi’s dear friend, the poet and national hero Alessandro Manzoni died, he was too grief-stricken to attend the funeral, so he composed a requiem to honour his memory. What emerged out of his sorrow is one of the most powerful works for orchestra and voice ever written. Sometimes referred to as “an opera in ecclesiastical vestments” Verdi’s gift for dramatic writing is on full display in this remarkable score for almost a hundred musicians and a chorus of over sixty singers. Asking the grand questions of life, it takes the audience on an intense musical journey from the depths of profound despair to ecstatic hope – a transcendent work, once experienced never forgotten. Opera Queensland is thrilled to be collaborating with Bleach Festival and the Queensland Conservatorium Griffith University to bring this music to audiences on the Gold Coast for the first time in many years. WORKSHOP In collaboration with the Queensland Conservatorium at Griffith University, the inaugural New Opera Workshop – NOW 2019 – brings together leading Australian and international opera composers, librettists and producers to investigate and celebrate what the art form of opera is and can be. 14

Technology also enables collaborations to flourish like never before. NOW 2019 creates a space to explore where these collaborations might lead, inviting artists and audiences to look closely at our extraordinary art form. Come and contribute to the conversation, come and listen to world premiere performances, come and build the future of opera.

NOW 2019 will take place over the weekend of our final performance of John Adams’ A Flowering Tree. 5 – 7 APR TO REGISTER YOUR INTEREST PLEASE CONTACT INFO@OQ.COM.AU

“Flood’s sweet, pure singing perfectly captures the impetuous courage of the role.” Simon Parris Courier Mail One of the rising stars on the Australian and international opera stage, soprano Alexandra Flood makes her Opera Queensland debut in 2019. For several years Alexandra has performed leading roles in some of the most significant opera houses in Germany, Austria, and the USA. Now it is Brisbane’s turn to experience her sensational talent in the intimate setting of our studio space. Partnering with Alexandra is Brisbane’s own piano wunderkind, Alex Raineri, described by Limelight Magazine as a pianist of “superb virtuosic skill and musicality”. Together they will present a concert of songs by Schubert, Strauss, Debussy and Fauré.
