GENERAL DIRECTOR’S WELCOME TO MY OSJ FAMILY, I am so excited to have you join us for the first musical Opera San José has produced in its rich and wonderful history. West Side Story is an American masterpiece and one that belongs on our stage—its story and music as grand as opera itself. Phenomenal singing, dancing and acting await us as our incredible cohort of resident and guest artists take the stage. The history of the American experience certainly is as monumental as the operatic form; the music of Leonard Bernstein and lyrics of Stephen Sondheim capture the grandeur in this master work. The fundamental question of what defines an American citizen and how our communities are strengthened by our multicultural identities lies at the heart of the piece. We are thrilled to add the operatic voice to this masterpiece. With some of the most cherished music ever written, West Side Story is a glorious piece of American musical art that transcends so many boundaries, including that of language. In recognition of the vibrant diversity of both the characters of West Side Story and the community of San Jose, OSJ is proud of the addition of Spanish supertitles for this production. Only through the generosity of patrons like yourself are we able to keep the music and dancing alive. The legacy of Irene Dalis lives on with our fantastic resident artists onstage today, conquering new roles and achieving fantastic artistic heights. The steadfast support of our patrons and a growing community audience allow our artists to thrive—taking huge leaps forward with their craft and artistry. Throughout the rehearsal process, as we prepare for opening night, we have been dreaming of our audience. Planning how our work can delight, thrill and inspire our community makes even long days in rehearsal a joyous experience. In my first few months as General Director, I have been moved by the interconnected and engaged community of supporters who sustain this unique gem of a company. Culture is something we build together, with and for a beloved audience, and by weaving together the strengths and talents of so many artists and technicians. Opera is not easy to make, but it is very easy to love—and I’m so grateful to be living in a place where this art form is cherished. A debt of gratitude is owed to our staff, orchestra, front of house team, artists, production staff, company members, board members and community partners whose dedication to the art form, passion and belief in opera kept us steadfast through the challenges of returning to live performance. Already we are dreaming of our next performances with all of you, back in the gorgeous California Theater. Thank you and enjoy the performance! With gratitude,

SHAWNA LUCEY GENERAL DIRECTOR & CEO OPERA SAN JOSÉ 3

CONDUCTOR’S NOTE A WORK FOR ALL TIMES “This will be our reply to violence: to make music more intensely, more beautifully, more devotedly than ever before.” –Leonard Bernstein In our first week of rehearsals for this production, it became clear that our minds were clouded and our hearts were weighed down—from personal issues of family, health, and stress over preparation, to global issues like the pandemic, war, and inflation. We resolved not to suppress, but rather to invest all of this into the work we present for you. Each day in rehearsal, we considered the implications of the scenes and music for our world, and in every performance we will open our hearts to the joys and tragedies of the characters we portray. This is the great pressure and pleasure of being an artist, to pour oneself into the creative process and the performances. West Side Story was, of course, created in a time of great turmoil as well. On the heels of a world war (West Side was originally conceived in 1949), came a new era of Cold War, interventions in Korea and Vietnam, waves of immigration and refugees; McCarthyism—of which Bernstein was a target and victim—created an atmosphere of “caution and fear,” slum clearance destroyed neighborhoods for interstates or development projects, and teenage gang violence became a major concern. Clearly, the creators chose to imbue West Side Story with the weight of their own world. Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet is transported to the gritty streets of New York: a tale of the power of hate to destroy, the power of love to overcome, and the hope of a place “Somewhere” where these problems and troubles cannot touch us. As we consider the challenges Bernstein faced and those we face today, it becomes clear that they are a common thread in every period in history: war, poverty, disease, rejection and fear of the immigrant or refugee… These things stay with us, but so do the moments of joy that can transport and carry us through. The creators of this work have given us a perfect reflection, a true likeness upon which to gaze and consider what things can stay and what things must change, and it is our great pleasure to join you today to perform this incredible American Masterpiece.

DIRECTOR’S NOTE Many shows come and go, but a few stand the test of time. As a Puerto Rican adolescent growing up in Pennsylvania, West Side Story had a prime existence in my world. The 1961 film was my entrée to the mid-century musical retelling of Romeo and Juliet because of its inclusion of showing a slice of life from a culture that I know so well. It’s also possibly the first mainstream work to romanticize New York fire escapes. The primary power of the story, however, rests in the dominance of Leonard Bernstein’s music, both gritty and beautiful, as well as the delicate balance of the depiction of 1950s gangs against operatic-Shakespearean high drama. The setting is in a New York (and America) that no longer exists, yet somehow continues to resonate as current American society struggles with race, representation, and cultural shifts. Many scenes, whose words were etched in my memory from a young age, now have meaning that seems to reach a new level of poignancy: one of the first stage directions of the printed script describes the Jets as “an anthology of what is called ‘American.’” Interestingly enough, there is also such a thing as “an anthology” of what is called Puerto Rican. This concept is reflected directly by the talented actors chosen for these roles—and highlights that what is “American” is precisely diverse. Today this debate seems to rattle in our consciousness as we experience modern day “turf” wars over freedom, borders, and supremacy. The bullish nature of the gangs’ behavior is juxtaposed by the role of women. Anita seems to be the strongest female figure, demonstrating her ability to combat machista culture by declaring to her boyfriend Bernardo that she’s “an American girl now.” The rules of home don’t apply here on the mainland. Maria, while young, is not to be underestimated. We see flashes of sparks in her when she speaks with her clumsy would-be-boyfriend Chino, or when she is telling Anita that she hates her dress for the dance. Like Tony, Maria sees beyond her immediate sphere. His entrance into her life then ignites the sparks within her into a full-on fire: she begins to make choices for herself despite the dangers that surround her. The women on the Jets’ side show that they support their men despite being obviously uninterested in what a turf war even means. Because it is, in the end, juvenile. The environment we’ve created for this production is one of a New York that is in constant motion. Sometimes it supports our Romeo and Juliet’s simple yet very real fantasies, while at other times it oppresses them. The period, while rooted in 1950’s hairstyles and behaviors, remains timeless so as to illuminate the universality of what is transpiring between lovers, enemies, and culture. Opera San José has given me the opportunity to tackle the show that I have been waiting to direct for almost 30 years. I grew up living on the mainland while simultaneously experiencing life on the island and, in adulthood, lived in New York for over a decade before making my permanent home in Puerto Rico. I have had nothing but a thrilling existence synthesizing cultures and heritage in this arduous yet rewarding process. I welcome you to immerse yourself in this story and feel why it will never lose its impact on the world.

THE MARRIAGE OF FIGARO Music by Mozart • Libretto by Da Ponte September 10 – 25, 2022 Our season commences with this highly anticipated, allnew production that transports us to colonial India during the Victorian Imperial rule. We are proud to collaborate with Mosaic America to integrate Kathak dance in this multicultural celebration that brings the exuberance and festivity of Bollywood to the California Theatre stage.

CINDERELLA Music & libretto by Alma Deutscher November 12 – 27, 2022 In 2017, California Theatre audiences watched the sold-out American premiere of Cinderella by the then 12-year-old composer, in a production driven and supported by the Packard Humanities Institute (PHI). OSJ and PHI are thrilled to be joining forces once more to welcome Deutscher back, with the now 17-year-old taking the baton in this pivotal moment in her career—her opera conducting debut.

GETTING TO KNOW SHAWNA LUCEY by Friends of OSJ’s Meera Prahlad General Director Shawna Lucey checked in with our volunteer auxiliary, Friends of OSJ, about some of her favorite things and hopes for the future. Where are you from? Do you have any family in the Bay Area? I am originally from Houston, TX and Ebeneezer (my husband) is from New York City. We have family in the Bay Area and lots of friends! What is one thing that excites you about this area? So many beautiful outdoor spaces to explore with my family. I’m so happy our daughter JJ (short for June James) is going to learn to walk in San Jose! What gets you out of bed every day? Love of my family and love of my work. I absolutely adore what I do and seeing my daughter laugh in the morning, getting a kiss from Ebeneezer makes every day great. I think that’s been a major lesson of the past couple of years—not to take anything for granted and I am trying to keep that close to my heart. Favorite drink? I absolutely love coffee. Perhaps too much. And if I have an evening rehearsal, I treat myself to a Diet Coke (another favorite drink). Ebeneezer and I love a glass of sparkling wine at the end of the day—we try to celebrate something every day. Do you have a self-care routine? I have long been dedicated to acrylic nail manicures with wild nail art on them. That is my favorite form of selfcare—thinking about my next manicure and working with nail techs who love to experiment.

What are your hobbies other than music? I love to exercise—it’s been hard to fit it into the schedule but lifting weights and getting to the gym is a major passion of mine. What is a defining moment that led you to opera? When I was in graduate school, my directing mentor said “You speak multiple languages and read music—why not look into directing opera?” I didn’t know anything about the art form so I applied for a lot of different positions and the one I got was as a technical apprentice at the Santa Fe Opera working with the orchestra. My first task was setting up and attending the orchestra reading of Falstaff—it was love at first note! I focused on climbing the ladder in opera and a decade later I returned to Santa Fe Opera as a mainstage director—the first female director they had had since the 1990s. How do you see OSJ’s relationship with Friends? Friends is an incredible organization that make OSJ’s ability to produce the highest quality grand opera possible. Friends’ dedication and support come when the staff and artists need it most. How do you plan to engage with Friends? I’m hoping we can throw events together that give our community the chance to gather with our resident artists and enjoy the amazing music we all love so much. I have so many event and community partnership ideas and I hope Friends will be right at the center of those efforts.

CREATORS ARTHUR LAURENTS BOOK An award-winning playwright, screenwriter, librettist, director and producer, Arthur Laurents has been responsible for creating the librettos of many Broadway shows including Gypsy, Anyone Can Whistle, Do I Hear A Waltz?, Hallelujah, Baby! and Nick & Nora. He wrote the screenplays for The Snake Pit, Anna Lucasta, Anastasia, Bonjour Tristesse, The Way We Were and The Turning Point. He also wrote the plays Home Of The Brave, The Time Of The Cuckoo and A Clearing in The Woods. He directed I Can Get It For You Wholesale, Anyone Can Whistle, Gypsy, La Cage Aux Folles, Birds Of Paradise and Nick & Nora.

LEONARD BERNSTEIN MUSIC Leonard Bernstein transformed the way Americans and people everywhere hear and appreciate music. Bernstein’s successes as a composer ranged from Broadway (West Side Story, On the Town, Wonderful Town, Candide) to major concert works, such as his three symphonies—subtitled “Jeremiah” (1944), “The Age of Anxiety” (1949), and “Kaddish” (1963)—and Serenade for violin, strings and percussion (1954); Chichester Psalms (1965); MASS: A Theater Piece for Singers, Players and Dancers (1971); Songfest (1977); Concerto for Orchestra: Jubilee Games (1989); and Arias and Barcarolles (1988). Bernstein also composed two operas, Trouble in Tahiti (1952) and A Quiet Place (1983), and three ballets, Fancy Free (1944), Facsimile (1946), and Dybbuk (1975). He received an Oscar nomination for the score of On the Waterfront (1954). Bernstein conducted the world’s greatest orchestras for almost half a century. He enjoyed special relationships with the New York Philharmonic (music director, 1958–69, thereafter permanent laureate conductor), the Israel Philharmonic, and the Vienna Philharmonic. Among Bernstein’s many honors were the American Academy of Arts and Letters’ Gold Medal, a Kennedy Center Honor, 11 Emmy Awards, a special Tony Award, a Lifetime Achievement Grammy Award, and the Japan Arts Association’s Praemium Imperiale. Bernstein died in 1990.

STEPHEN SONDHEIM LYRICS Stephen Sondheim wrote the music and lyrics for Saturday Night (1954), A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum (1962), Anyone Can Whistle (1964), Company (1970), Follies (1971), A Little Night Music (1973), The Frogs (1974), Pacific Overtures (1976), Sweeney Todd (1979), Merrily We Roll Along (1981), Sunday in the Park with George (1984), Into the Woods (1987), Assassins (1991), Passion (1994) and Road Show (2008) as well as lyrics for West Side Story (1957), Gypsy (1959) and Do I Hear a Waltz? (1965) and additional lyrics for Candide (1973). Anthologies of his work include Side by Side by Sondheim (1976), Merry Me a Little (1981), You’re Gonna Love Me Tomorrow (1983), Putting it Together (1993/99) and Sondheim on Sondheim (2010). He composed the scores of the films Stavisky (1974) and Reds (1981) and songs for Dick Tracy (1990) and the television production Evening Primrose (1966). 20 OPERA SAN JOSÉ

His collected lyrics with attendant essays have been published in two volumes: Finishing the Hat (2010) and Look, I Made A Hat (2011). In 2010 Broadway’s Henry Miller’s Theatre was renamed The Stephen Sondheim Theatre in his honour; in 2019, London’s Queens Theatre was also renamed the Sondheim.

JEROME ROBBINS ORIGINAL DIRECTOR AND CHOREOGRAPHER Jerome Robbins is world renowned for his work as a choreographer of ballets as well as his work as a director and choreographer in theater, movies and television. Although he began as a modern dancer, his start on Broadway was as a chorus dancer before joining the corps de ballet of American Ballet Theatre in 1939, where he went on to dance principal roles in the works of Fokine, Tudor, Massine, Balanchine, Lichine, and de Mille. His first ballet, Fancy Free (1944) for ABT, still in many repertoires, celebrated its fiftieth birthday on April 18, 1994. While embarking on his career in the theater, Mr. Robbins simultaneously created ballets for New York City Ballet, which he joined in 1949, and became an Associate Artistic Director with George Balanchine. Mr. Robbins has directed for television and film as well, with his co-direction and choreography of West Side Story winning him two Academy Awards. After his Broadway triumph with Fiddler On the Roof in 1964, Mr. Robbins continued creating ballets for New York City Ballet. He shared the position of Ballet-Master-in-Chief with Peter Martins until 1989. He has created more than 60 ballets, including Afternoon of a Faun (1953), The Concert (1956), Les Noces (1965), Dances At a Gathering (1969), In the Night (1970), In G Major (1975), Other Dances (1976), Glass Pieces (1983) and Ives Songs (1989) which are in the repertories of the New York City Ballet, the Ballet de l’Opera de Paris and major dance companies throughout the world. His most recent ballets include A Suite of Dances with Mikhail Baryshnikov (1994), 2 & 3 Part Inventions (1994), West Side Story Suite (1995) and Brandenburg (1996) all of which premiered at New York City Ballet. In addition to his two Academy Awards, Mr. Robbins’s awards and citations include four Tony Awards, five Donaldson Awards, two Emmy Awards, the Screen Directors’ Guild Award and the New York Drama Critics Circle Award. Mr. Robbins is a 1981 Kennedy Center Honors Recipient, was awarded the Commandeur de L’Order des Arts et des Lettres, is an honorary member of the American Academy and Institute of Arts and Letters, and was awarded a National Medal of Arts as well as the Governor’s Arts Awards by the New York State Council on the Arts. Some of his Broadway shows include On the Town, Billion Dollar Baby, High Button Shoes, West Side Story, The King and I, Gypsy, Peter Pan, Miss Liberty, Call Me Madam and Fiddler on the Roof. In 1989, Jerome Robbins’s Broadway won six Tony Awards including Best Musical and Best Director. He was most recently awarded the French Chevalier dans l’Ordre National de la Legion d’Honneur. Jerome Robbins passed away in 1998.
