Summer in Lendava

The butterfly is a symbol of change associated with the multi functional motif of transformation: from a tiny larva, through a persistent caterpillar and a mysterious beetle it turns into a wonderful flying creature, which sails in the wind with ease and flutters its wings to celebrate life and decorate nature. Lendava wants to go through a similar process of transformation during the European Capital of Culture candidacy and grow into a young, colourful and open Lendava, with a new and interconnected community and creative high-quality contents which would enrich the town’s everyday life, attract many foreign and domestic visitors and improve the standard of living in Lendava. The butterfly symbol is strongly connected to the local area - the late local academic painter and graphic designer Štefan Galič was a great fan and admirer of butterflies. His friends called him Lepke (which in Hungarian means butterfly). His Butterfly series belonged

Be as smart as your phone!

to his early creations, which he later on symbolically rounded up in his late artistic period at the end of the seventies and at the beginning of the eighties. He was also a butterfly collector. His extensive and wonderful collection is now displayed in the Lendava castle. Our logo with the contours of a butterfly implies to the organic architecture of Imre Makovcz, the author of the most unusual and exciting house of culture (Theater and Concert Hall Lendava) in the world. Makovcz’s architecture in based on natural harmony and tries to bring the shape and atmosphere of this beautiful building in Lendava closer to natural organisms in which the individual parts are in harmony with the whole. This feature conditions the organisms’ basic functioning. The butterfly symbol has many additional semantic connota tions on which our town based its project for the European Capital of Culture 2025 candidacy: connecting the four directions of the sky and four neighbouring countries (Croatia, Hungary, Austria and Slovenia) - which is similar to the concept of the Vinarium tower that stands for convergence and intertwining of four cultures (Croatian, Hungarian, Slovenian and Roma), and four program pillars (Yesterday and Tomorrow, Open Lendava, New Community and Young Lendava), on which the Local Culture Program 2017-2025 was based.

Wondering where to go this summer?

Mojca Redjko Program assistant

In Lendava, an eloquent and brave town in the beak of the Slovenian hen, we have prepared a rich summer program with interesting events. This is going to be a seasonal festival dedi cated to the general public. It is home-made and cosmopolitan, both at the same time, so it strengthens tradition and makes the festival really noble. It includes local productions, e.g. the Urban meadow layout co-created by over 300 pupils from Lendava and the surrounding area. It promises prominent guests, a lot of music and a handful of noble literature and a wide variety of theatre and creative workshops. The LindArt colony will take care of the art centre and the festival itself will be enriched by dances of all genres, photography and videos, a top-notch film program, interactive guidance and much much more. And if you get tired, you can rest in the shade, enjoy the beauty of the castle courtyard and feel the “chill on the hill« atmosphere of the high summer. The individual program sets are not determined by space or genre; all contents are intertwined and connected. The “Equinox” announces a careless and joyful time of the year, the “Vedutas« depict the details of our beautiful town, the “Open!” program package indicates to the expansion of various events to different locations across the town and the “Stories” and “Impressions” program packages direct attention to our town’s rich traditions and vibrant multicultural past. In the “Shade” program package we will help you relax, the “Views” will allow you to see into

the surrounding vineyards, The Passages will remind you of the dynamic migrations, the “Stars” will let you gaze into the starry night sky over Lendava and observe the stars on the Makovecz stage in front of the Theater and Concert Hall, and for the end the humorous mathematics programe package “L = en + dva” will announce the end of the summer holidays. The continuity of our quality program is ensured by mas sive presence of amateur culture: I love, so I am alive! is the title of our amateur program package including over 650 performers from 54 societies and 5 countries. The highlight of our program is the “Vinarium” package, which stands for music, dancing and culinary specialities offered at the Bogračfest and the traditional Lendava grape harvesting festival, including the time before and after the two stated festivals. Our programs will entertain you from high summer to fall, this year on four different stages and everywhere across the town. We will take care of the “Off” time as well and would love to see you at the Lendava castle where you can see the wonderful exhibition of Marc Chagall’s paintings from the Creation and the Bible series. Don’t miss it!

Marc Chagall: The Creation and the Bible Marc Chagall (1887−1985) was without doubt one of the greatest, most successful and most popular artists of the 20th century. With his art, he created a unique world infused with pathos, lyric, humour and magic and in his work he portrayed his vivid memory of the Jewish education system in his native village Vitjebsk in Russia. He closely monitored the emergence and development of great artistic currents and schools of the 20th century, but remained faithful to his unique style. Seven decades of his creative career were influenced by his memories and past. This applies to all Chagall's work - his paintings, watercolours, graphic work, painted stained glass, tapestry, as well as ceramics. Chagall was an artist, but also a poet. He loved circus scenes. He once wrote: »The circus is a magical world, a world of play that has been around for thousands of years. It includes dancing in tears and laughter. It is a play performed on hands and feet and transformed into high art.« Chagall also felt that love was a source of the universe and the foundation of his own existence. In his works he often depicted lovers who are infused with lyric and painted in specific colours i.e. “the colours of love«.

www.gml.si

“Ever since my earliest youth, I have been fascinated by the Bible. I have always believed that it is the greatest source of poetry of all time.” (Marc Chagall) To Chagall work was the most important thing in life. He never spend too much time anywhere except in his studio, not even at his own exhibitions. He missed his studio whenever he had to leave work for a longer period of time. He said that as long as people will show interest in his creations, he will preserve his artistic power and put it into art. Deep within he was convinced that the world has always been susceptible to beauty and longed for exceptionality. He dedicated over 25 years to his graphic cycle with biblical themes. The exhibition in the gallery of the Lendava castle focuses foremost on Chagall’s interest in the Bible. Ambroise Vollard, one of the most important publishers and art dealers of French contemporary art from the beginning of the 20th century, sent Chagall to Palestine in 1931, offe ring the artist an opportunity to get to know the biblical land which prior to his trip Chagall only knew from books or the recreations of his imagination.

Urban meadow, Opening of a spatial installation The introductory program package is intended primarily for the younger audience and families, as it directly announces the beginning of the summer holidays. It connects the past and the present, revitalises and renews precious traditions and gives them a new meaning, revives the surroundings of our house of culture, infuses the area with life and announces a happy summer time. Our town will be enriched by colourful umbrella installations de corated by the pupils of the DOŠ I Lendava (in cooperation with DOŠ Gaberje), DOŠ II Lendava (The Perec Intergenerational House) and DOŠ Genterovci primary schools and the pupils’ mentors in the typical colours of the Prekmurje flowers according to the design of the Mikrourbanika group, which is also the author of the project. The project producer is the KKCL. This is a socially responsible project in the field of cultural and artistic education, which will change the surroundings of Makovecs's masterpiece into an urban lawn that will flourish throughout the summer.

Lurrak, Dynamic show of a modern circus The Basque group Aire Aire from Bilbao has developed their Lurrak performance in cooperation with the Antzerkia band. The event happens in a factory and is presented in the language of a new, modern circus - rhythmic actions and neck-breaking circus acrobatics accompanied by Basque music played on original instruments (tricitix, alboo, galician dude, quena, tambourine, mandolin etc.) The musical per formance of the modern circus speaks about a revolt in a small community expressed through absurd, comedy and aesthetics of the 1960s. Do you dare to be a part of it?

Good whishes, Family workshop In the Far East the lanterns of good wishes and love, also called heavenly fairies, are known as traditional bearers of love, peace, power, courage, friendship and happiness. People believe that all the wishes and desires written (or plotted) on the lanterns will become true when the lanterns reach the sky. At creative workshops, we will furnish lanterns with good wishes for health, peace and happiness. We will all write, draw, and silently make wishes. Everyone is welcome, the young and the old, individuals, families, friends and couples. No advance registration required.

8:50 p.m.

Good Wishes Fly up to the Sky Releasing lanterns into the sky

As the Slovene and European festive traditions have it, a bonfire is made on the night before the summer solstice. That is on the name day of St. John the Baptist, once known as the Sun God Kresnik. In the past bonfire night was also called Kupalo, which is in fact a summer folk festival also known under the name bonfire, bonfire night, ivanje, šentjaževo or summer solstice and equinox, which is celebrated on the evening of the 23 to 24 June. The celebration of the Kupala is marked by a bonfire and is celebrated as the longest day of the year representing the victory of light and life. This year instead of a classic bonfire, we will light lanterns at sunset and release them into the sky with our wishes. A lot of positive thoughts and beautiful wishes flying above Lendava should bring good luck to everyone, fulfil the wishes and desires hidden in the corner of your heart and bring a bright future, good people and amazing things to this beautiful town on the shores of the former Pannonian Sea!

Summer in Lendava

The summer solstice usually occurs between 21 and 23 June, which is when the summer starts. This day is called the bonfire. It announces the longest day of the year which in 2018 will last for 15 hours and 46 minutes. The sun will rise at 5:11 a.m. and go down just before nine o’clock in the evening. Let’s take advantage of it!

Wild Strings Trio, Concert The assembly emerged in 2014 when the Slovak jazz violinist Petra Onderufova, the French classical cellist Toby Khun and the Slovene-Polish guitarist Aleksandar Kuzmić connected. With a great start, genuine mutual commitment and the desire to create unique sounds, the members of the band are hoping to upgrade their ambitious goal and challenge - combining the musical genres each of them encountered on their own independent music path and incorporate them into their joint music, which is deeply entrenched in folk and improvisation and has developed a recognisable rhythm through complex tricks and author’s arrangements. This rhythm surprises, excites and inspires all kinds of audiences across Europe. With its genuine energy, this music treat will accompany all your good wishes up to the sky.

The four-day workshop on the artistic use of umbrellas as pres entational requisites / puppets / scenography is organised to promote the creativity of young people. It relates to the co-operative project of outdoor umbrella installations and intersects with the puppet and object theatre. The workshop will finish in production.

My umbrella can be a...

In production of the workshop participants The holiday of the revived umbrellas will take place on Friday evening. The content, theme, length and final image will be created by the workshop participants and their mentor Svetlana Patafta (Puna kuća). Everyone is welcome!

The registration of children from the age of 5 will be accepted at: lendava2025@gmail.com. The oldest known wall paintings, which depict umbrellas, orig inate from Thebs (2nd millennium BC) and represent an ancient Egyptian carriage equipped with a parasol. Thousands of years later, the ingenious European men invented the modern umbrella to protect themselves from the weather. Valuable specimens of the first modern umbrella manufactured at the Hungária Landa Hungária Hazai Ernyőgyár umbrella factory in Lendava in the beginning of the previous century have been preserved till present day. The umbrella manufactory in Lendava was the first umbrella manufactory on the territory of the former Austrian-Hungarian Empire and was renamed into Indip after World War II. The umbrellas from Lendava were used by people all over the world: in Poland the Netherlands, Ethiopia, Albania, the Soviet Union, Canada, USA, (former) Czechoslovakia, England, France and elsewhere. Later our umbrella manufactory was suppressed by the cheap umbrellas from the Far East and closed before its 100th birthday.

The Story about Colours is the subtitle of Svetlana Patafte’s authorial play created in co-production with the Mala scena and Puna kuća theatres from Zagreb, which will run on the summer stage of the Theatre and Concert Hall on Friday night. The puppet, object and music performance based on the story of the Rainbow by Manuela Vladić Maštruko introduces the basic concepts from early childhood, speaks about diversity, tolerance and respect for the child’s freedom of creativity. Each colour introduces a new story, new concepts and re lationships, all of which intertwine on a colourful umbrella.

Vedutas - realistic drawings, paintings, graphic prints of landscapes, towns, villages, castles - before photos vendutas were the only preservation tool that could capture the appearance of Slovenian towns and places and preserve their image for the future generations. Their creators were precious chroniclers. Modern summer chroniclers tend to beautify the real images by manipulating the reality - all for the purpose of impressing and inspiring the future generations with their work.

Those who have overcome the gravity of the parquet floor and protected their hearts from the glare of clichés are involved in music. Stories 13−19 July 2018 Friday, 13 July

The right to a story is the basic right of every individual. Without stories, people become sad and places become sad, in fact so sad that they forget their names (S. Rushdie, Harun and the Sea of Stories). Stories are born every day; they interpret the present, the past and the future. They build and explain life. Facts do not exist without imagination, just as there is no darkness without light and no silence without sound. Everyday stories create memories of individuals and communities, space and time. Above all, they develop a strong interest in happy endings.

Lendavske gorice are the lonely south-eastern extension of Goričko in Prekmurje and are located between Kobiljski brod in the north-west, Ledava in the south-west and Krka in the east. Based on the Trianon peace treaty from 1920, Lendavske gorice became a prominent border region with an ethnically mixed population. Due to favourable natural conditions, vineyards have been planted here very early in the past. The vineyards belonged to Lendava’s townsfolk and lords who resided in the town castle. The landowner gave the land on the sunny side of the hill to the lowland village communities who divided the land among their members. In addition to the noble vines, they planted elementary vine here and nurtured the killer view from their vine cellars, from where one could see on the stage of this year’s literary summer.

Summer in Lendava

Transitions 10−17 August 2018

Throughout the centuries, despite the many obstacles, or perhaps even because of them, millions of people moved to other towns and places, mostly to find a more friendly and better place to live and work. Moving near the water where lindens grow, which is also one of the etymological explanations of the origin of our town’s name (Lendava), seemed like an appropriate location for many of them. Through the turbulent history, our town has been inviting and driving people away from this location, now, however, Lendava belongs to one of the nationally most diverse and rich towns in the wider region.

The faith of our days, book presentation and reading

A selection of the best short animated films from the children’s and youth film festival, 40 minutes

The difficult fate of our fellow Slovenians from the coastal region, who found a home in Prekmurje after World War I is preserved in the poetic testimony of Agneza Papež from the Karst region. Her collection was created at the time of her deportation to Sarvar in 1942. In cooperation with the Prekmurje Society of Immigrants from Primorje and Istra and the Cultural Society Hotiza her testimony was turned into a book.

Have you ever thought you could shoot a movie? Have you ever tried yourself in the role of a director or cameraman? Do you know how to tell your story in moving images? Now is the chance to do and learn all of that. Every year in October at the Enimation festival in Maribor there is a selection of the best films made by children & young people from all over the world. After the film we will have a conversation with the artistic director of the festival and workshop manager Hano Repše. Aleksandrinke, Slovenian documentary, 2011 Director and screenwriter: Metod Pevec This is a story about painful, almost exclusively female emigration. Due to poverty and fascist assimilation policy, the Vipava Valley was massively abandoned by young people and this trend con tinued until World War II. The men have been leaving Argentina and never returned, the girls and women, however, went to Egypt, most of them to the rich and cosmopolitan Alexandria, where they stayed for decades as wet nurses, nannies and housewives. Many of them have returned home too late to be able to have children of their own or built themselves a home. A star is a shiny (gaseous) celestial body with a large mass and starship is a consequence of nuclear reactions the energy of which is seen as light, or, in the case of the Sun, felt as heat. Stars appear to be glittering points in the night sky, sparkling due to the effects of the Earth's atmosphere. Astronomers estimate that in the known and explored part of the Universe there are at least 70.000.000.000.000.000.000.000 stars, which is 230 billion times more than the 300 billion stars in our Milky Way. The mathematical equation is quite simple - it connects patterns on the left with the patterns of the right. The science of patterns, also known as mathematics, studies also the dimension of space. Modern space exploration involves the higher dimensions of non-Euclidean geometry, which plays a major role in general relativity and topology.

Summer stage of the Theatre and Concert Hall Lendava Petrica Kerempuh 4+ , mono puppet musical Author of the text (by the motives of Slavko Mihalića and Croatian folk tales) and dramaturge: Igor Weidlich / Director: Lovro Krsnik In her musical and scenic adventure Petrica Kerempuh talks about the constant struggle and fights against human wickedness. She transforms objects from her suitcase and parts of her body into dolls, plays the tamburitza, sings, speaks in different dialects, and in form of a dynamic musical revives the memories of her travels around the world. And while doing all of this, she even has time to fall in love. Petrica’s character is a Kajkavian version of the Slovenian Pavliha, who’s character resembles that of Martin Krpan - a faithful, creative and rebellious individual and the hero of the crowds. She does all sorts of things for living, including this vibrant show. She has a good sense of rhythm and a good ear for music. To some Petrica Kerempuh is as fine as a slice of bread, to others the greatest skunk! Production: Pinklec theater family (Čakovec, Croatia) and Medley theater

“A handfull of feathers does not fly without wings.” Bert Schierbeek Playing games is a fun, but strictly serious children’s task. Once you really get into it, interesting things can happen. A boy and two girls fly on the wings of imagination far, far into the freedom of children’s games. During the rolling hen eggs, the whispering old woman, the flying cow and other improvised occurrences, unfolds a game of friendship, loneliness and solidarity. Relativity is a well known concept, especially when »time drags«, however, we don’t seem to pay enough attention to the topological characteristics of the space, which introduces the basic concept of connection. Definition: Space X is connected to different paths, given that between every point a and b there is a path leading out of space X. The more the points, the more possible paths.

Author of the text by the motives of Andersen’s fairy tale Thumbelina: Angela Kolozsi / Director: András Veres The world famous Andersen’s Fairy Tale Thumbelina is a bit scary, but like every fairy tale it has a happy ending and provides a good lesson. It talks about a small-toed-sized girl who experiences a series of accidents from the very beginning of the story, among them the encounter with the freaky frog groom, the old blind mole and the greedy mouse. With goodness and honesty she bravely defeats all of them and in the end she is rewarded with true love and a happy life with a prince of her size. The moral of the story is quite clear and we will gladly take it into account. Production: The Griff puppet theatre (Zalaegerszeg, Hungary)

The author of concept and scenography: Alžběta Vitvarová / The puppet show Tall, Wide and Shrap-sighted by the motives of Karl Jaromír Erben was inspired by the graphic art of Zbyňka Sekala. NOnce upon a time a prince was looking for a bride. He knew exactly who he wanted and he wanted nobody else. And he got on the road. And two of them got on the road, and tree of them got on the road, and a horse went along, so that they were four and they arrived at the Iron Castle. That’s where the story really begins. And it has a truly happy ending. The performance was created as part of a practical study of stage design at the Department of Alternative and Puppet Theatre of the DAMU Theatre Academy. Production: Alžběta Vitvarová and KALD DAMU (Prague, The Czech Republik)

Wooden princesses The basic element of this entertaining puppet performance is the applied material: wood in all possible shapes and sizes. That is why the workshop is associated with wood. Children as well as adults can create their own little prin cesses - wooden and clumsy, but alive and sweet as the workshop makers promised.

Lendava with its surrounding vineyards and translucent geographic location represents the crossing point of different cultures and culinary delights, including vine. The Vinarium (lat. wine, from/of wine) tower in the mids of the Lendava vineyards known for its rich offer of local and foreign wine symbolises the wine market or the forum vinarium from the Roman times and was therefore named Vinarium. The tower is not only a tourist attraction but also the metaphor of beautiful views which allows you to see in all four cardinal directions and across 4 countries far into the future. The Vinarium tower is a story of success based on brave combining of tradition and modernity.
