The wines of Bodegas de Alto are the passion project of Master of Wine Giles Cooke and his team in the Rioja Oriental sub-zone of Rioja. Opimian Members may recall Giles from Cellar 300 where we introduced Australia’s Thistledown Wines, a partnership between MWs Giles Cooke and Fergal Tynan. With both wineries, Giles displays his commitment to sustainability and his belief in the quality potential of the Garnacha grape.

Garnacha

Made from hand-harvested Garnacha and grown in Spain’s Navarra region. In the winery, careful handing and the use of mostly older oak allows for this wine’s fruit to take centre stage. The bouquet is a melody of strawberry, raspberry and cranberry aromas with floral and herbal hints. The palate shares this red berry profile with a touch of oak spice on the finish. 2023-2026– lw

Chorizo a la sidra

A luxurious wine overflowing with red berry and plum flavor, offset by highlights of vanilla and nutmeg from time in barrel. This wine's silky tannins are seamlessly integrated and in perfect harmony with its generous fruit core. It is absolutely delicious today, but its depth of flavour, fine balance and concentration promise its continual evolution over the next decade. 2023-2033– lw

The exceptional quality of the old-vine Garnacha used to make La Planta Magica allows for a low-intervention approach in the winery. This elegant wine flaunts a bouquet of pristine raspberry and strawberry fruit and a concentrated core of strawberry, raspberry and plum. Up to 12 months in French oak adds a nuance of nutmeg to the palate. This wine’s beautiful label depicts the mistletoe that grows in the almond trees surrounding the vineyard. 2023-2028– lw
