Clos Montblanc

Bodegas Concavins produces an array of still white, rosé, red and sparkling Cava wines from both local and international varieties. The estate is based in Barberà de la Conca, near the Medieval fortified town of Montblanc. The area is charged with a rich cultural heritage. Viticulture was introduced by the Phoenicians and propagated by the Romans. After several centuries’ decline under Moorish rule, winemaking once again flourished with the Cistercian monks. Bodegas Concavins has a history of grape growing in the region dating back many generations. Their respect for the land and commitment to exacting winemaking standards definitely comes through in the glass.

A light, unoaked Macabeu and Chardonnay blend with lifted aromas of green fruits and citrus. The palate is linear and dry, with zesty high acidity and tangy fruit flavours. Garrut is the Catalan name for the Monastrell grape, referred to as Mourvèdre in France. This classic red variety has distinctive meaty, herbal aromas and chiselled tannins. Here, it is blended with local grape, Trepat, which adds lovely freshness and a rounded structure. Bright red and dark fruit mingle with peppery, floral notes on this smooth, medium-bodied wine. Finishes with firm, chalky tannins. 2023-2027 –jb

A full-bodied Tempranillo blended with a 15% Cabernet Sauvignon to reinforce its tannic framework. Ripe dark fruit features on the nose, with subtle underlying florality. The palate is dense and very taut, with dark fruit flavours and the merest hint of vanilla from three months’ ageing in barrel. Finishes fresh and very grippy. 2025-2028 –jb

Despite several years ageing, this well-crafted blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot is still very tightly knit and firm. It features classic notes of cedar, dark fruit, and earthy nuances on the nose. The palate is fullbodied with meaty, herbal nuances adding complexity to the dark fruit flavours. This oaked, full-throttle Merlot from the Conca de Barberà appellation features pleasantly warming notes of baked dark fruit with hints of cocoa, herbs and spice. Beef estofado

Samsó is another Catalan name for a widely grown grape in Spain and southern France, Cariñena (a.k.a. Carignan). It is a classic blending partner for Syrah, matching its firm structure and dark fruit flavours. This broad, fullbodied red wine has intense red and dark fruit flavours, with lingering hints of spice and savoury nuances. Chalky tannins linger on the warming finish. 2023-2030 –jb

Syrah

A Coup de Coeur wine for this cellar, the bold Montblanc 362 Syrah is grown on the classic black slate and quartz soils of the Conca de Barberà appellation. Aged for one year in French and American oak, it features spicy, cedar nuances that add lots of interest on the nose – defined by heady notes of plum and sweet hoisin sauce. The palate is very firm with a chalky texture, and muscular tannins. 2025-2031–jb
