Piemonte in the northwest of Italy produces some of the world’s finest and most sought-after wines. It is a hilly region with the Alps bordering to the north and west (piedmont or piemonte means “foot of the mountain” in Italian). The region is also a gastronomic paradise; the Slow Food movement, now a global organisation dedicated to local food cultures, was born in the heart of the region in Bra, and in nearby Alba the streets reek of white truffles in the late autumn and winter months.
