Wines from Italy and France Wineries and wine drinkers everywhere have been affected by COVID-19, some more than others. Wine regions which rely heavily on the restaurant trade and tourism have been particularly hard hit. Back in April, the surplus of European wine was estimated to be as high as one billion litres, and there was much talk of distillation into industrial alcohol. As we mulled this over at Opimian, we wondered what we could do to help those who were the hardest hit. This Web Offering is a result of that. It includes producers from southern France that rely solely on local restaurant and cellar door sales, and wineries in northern Italy, one of the first regions to go into lockdown in Europe. All the wines are exclusive to Opimian in Canada, with many never having been available outside of their local vicinity. The usual rigorous tasting process was used to evaluate each wine. I was greatly relieved that samples made it through UK customs and were delivered during lockdown. This has been a great experience, finding some delicious wines, learning about the estates, and getting to virtually know the winemakers behind them. Enjoy!
JANE MASTERS MW, OPIMIAN’S MASTER OF WINE Every wine offered by Opimian is tasted and selected for its deliciousness and value by our consultant Master of Wine, Jane Masters MW. Jane also chooses the mixed cases for Opimian’s Discovery and Select Plus subscription programs for members to discover wines in an easy way, as well as wines for the premium Founders’ Choice program. As one of 409 Masters of Wine worldwide, Jane has in-depth knowledge and her aim is to share her love of wine with members via the Cellar Offering. She was elected Chairman of the Institute of Masters of Wine 2016-2018.

Cantina Beato Bartolomeo Cantina Beato Bartolomeo is located in the ancient Breganze wine region in the Veneto in northern Italy. The appellation lies in the hills surrounding the small town from which it takes its name and extends to the foot of the Alps. The land is planted to vines and cherry trees, with vine growing going back to ancient times. Some ancient varieties such as Vespaiolo are still cultivated there today and the region is renowned in Italy for the quality of its Pinot Noir. Named after a Dominican friar who was Bishop of Vicenza in the thirteenth century, Cantina Beato Bartolomeo was started by local growers in 1950. The winery makes wines in a way which is in keeping with the environment, socially equitable and economically viable. It aims to become completely self sufficient in terms of energy and currently produces 40% of its electricity needs from solar power.

PIEMONTE Cascina Chicco
This family-owned winery is currently run by Enrico and Marco Faccenda. It was established in Roero by their grandfather Ernesto, a local butcher on one hectare of land in the 1950s. The brothers now farm approximately 50 hectares in some of the best sites in different regions of Piemonte. As well as being a wine producer, Erico is mayor of his town and his wife is a doctor. They have been working hard to help the local population and nurse the sick during the pandemic. Both Enrico’s wife and daughter, who is studying obstetrics, contracted the virus but have fully recovered.

A wine with great structure and balance. 2016 was a very good year in Piemonte for Nebbiolo, and this wine is nicely mature with plenty of life ahead of it. Subsequent to selecting it for this offering, it was awarded the top 3 Bicchieri by Gambero Rosso. A mellow bouquet leads to a medium-bodied wine with delicious mid palate fruit. The vines are planted in Castelletto of Monforte d’Alba with south-west and west exposition. Yields are kept low by two thinnings in the vineyards in August. In addition, grapes are also strictly sorted at harvest. Grapes were left to macerate on skins for 40 to 45 days, then the wine was matured in barrels for 30 months.
This is a rare opportunity to taste these wines usually reserved for the restaurant industry.

$ 210.00
A wonderful example of Viognier, Château Jouclary’s 2019 has aromas of orange blossom with a touch of fresh apricot and vanilla oak. It is smooth and full, flavoursome yet elegant. Grapes were harvested in the cool early hours of the morning then left to macerate on skins at low temperature for 24 hours prior to fermentation.
Nice jammy fruits and cooked cherries with a nice depth on the nose precede a smooth juicy palate. This is a medium bodied wine, succulent and smooth with lingering bitter cherry flavours. Cabardès is where the influence of the Mediterranean climate and that of the Atlantic meet, and the appellation combines Bordeaux grape varieties with Syrah and Grenache from the south. Each grape variety was picked and vinified separately when fully ripe, undergoing an extended maceration of 30 days with no use of oak.

A complex, concentrated, full-bodied wine, Cuvée Guilhaume 2018 has intense spicy aromas with ginger, musk, dark cherries, mint, and tarragon. The oak makes its presence known on the palate, but it does not dominate the warm cooked fruit flavours, fine grained texture, and long bitter cherry finish. Made from a selection of grapes from the best vines on the estate, grapes underwent a cold maceration for three days prior to fermentation. It was matured in new French oak barrels for 12 months and is a blend of 45% Merlot, 45% Syrah and 10% Grenache. Drinking deliciously already, it should remain at its peak for some years.
Domaine la Voûte du Verdus
This project was started in 2011 by the Bonnet family, winegrowers in the reputed Terrasses du Larzac sub-region of Languedoc. Guilhem Bonnet watched his grandfather and father tending vines and followed in their footsteps, taking grapes to the local cooperative. His daughter Mélanie, an oenologist, is married to Pierre Estival (winemaker at Château Canet) and the young couple provided Guilhem encouragement and support to produce his own wines by selecting two hectares of the best plots. Today, a total of eight hectares in the communes of Aniane and Saint-Jean-de-Fos are used to make five distinctive wines. The winery, in the spectacular medieval village of SaintGuilhem-le-Désert, is housed in an old building built by the family in 1800. Its sits on an ancient vaulted stone bridge across the Verdus river that flows through the village, giving the domaine its name.

RHÔNE Domaine de Mermès
Domaine de Mermès in the Southern Ardèche on the Plateau des Gras is a family estate run by Séverine and Patrice Dumarcher. This was my first introduction to their wines, and I loved all three. The couple tend 20 hectares of vines planted at 360 metres in altitude on stoney clay and limestone soils. In addition, they have 5 hectares of lavender fields and make essential oils. Usually dependent on tourism to sell their products, the couple welcomes visitors all year round.
