Christmas Special 2022
Dear friends and collectors,
With a few treasures of Asian art and antiques as well as some old Burmese weights, brought to you with our catalogue no. 30, we want to sweeten your run-up to Christmas.
From an old Munich collection we acquired a group of superb miniature Buddha statues, made of silver (a few of high-grade silver others of an alloy with low silver content). They originate from different eras and regions throughout Southeast Asia.
Four Kammavaca manuscripts from our own collection with 4, 5, 6 and 7 lines of script show the evolution of the Kammavaca from the early 1700s to 1935 (dated). The two later manuscripts bear the maker’s signature and the name of city and quarter where it was produced. A rare feature and a special chance for collectors.
To complete the manuscript section we offer a few extraordinary fine sazigyo from mid-19th century to 1925 (dated) as well as an interesting group of title indicators for Thai Buddhist manuscripts.
With silver jewellery from the Golden Triangle and China, Burmese lacquerware, and - for the first time - antique textiles from Laos, Thailand and Cambodia, acquired from an old German collection, we complete Part I of our Christmas Special.
The collectors of Burmese weights find our “Opium Weights” in Part II of the catalogue.

1 Rare seated Buddha, bronze, Northern Thailand, early / pre-Lan Na period, 14th to 15th century
A seated bronze statue of Buddha on a lotus throne. Please note the large, impressive radiance with traces of gilding. Typical for the Buddha images of the early Lan Na period (probably Fang). Small curls are precisely arranged in lines. The eyes with pupils are downcast. The ear lobes are rather short. The lips are fine and detailed executed. The shoulder is rather tight and the arm with the earth touching gesture is long and slender. The statue appears in perfect proportion and with a superb dark patina.

A rather small but heavy Buddha statue. The Buddha is seated in padmasana on an undecorated pedestal on four feet. The right hand in bhumisparsha mudra The radiance is surrounded by lotus leaves. The top is broken. Please note the curved shape of the right hand Natural dark copper patina.

Seated miniature Buddha statue catalogue no. 10 c)
11 Worshipping of the Buddha, Shan States, Burma, 18th to 19th century
These small works of metalsmiths from the Shan States are rarely offered. They depict the main stations of the life of the Buddha. These lacquered, gilt metal objects were used as votive offerings to be sealed in the walls of newly build pagodas. The Buddha and the Nat are fixed, the worshippers hang loosely to the ring.

A detailed brass statue of Shiva as Khandoba with his wife Parvati as Mhalsi, depicted as an image of a warrior riding a horse. The sculpture consists of two separate parts.
13 Bhu Devi sculpture, Copper alloy, Southern India, circa 18th century or earlier Bhu Devi, the goddess of earth, stands with a lotus bud in her right hand on a circular lotus pedestal fixed to a rectangular base. Her hair is piled up to a conical headdress with a lotus bud on the back of her head. Beside Sri Devi, Bhu Devi is one of the two consorts of Vishnu, often depicted as a triad sculpture, flanking Vishnu in mirrored poses. Small bronze figure of Hanuman, India, 18th century or earlier
A bronze sculpture of Hanuman, the famous monkey general in Hindu mythology, stands on a circular lotus pedestal with a square bottom. His hands clasped in Anjali mudra and in obeisance, his long tail scrolling up to his head Hanuman is depicted in anthropomorphic form, only face and his upwards curved tail confirming his monkey identity.

Early Kammavaca manuscript, Mon (Burma), 17th or early 18th century
This early Buddhist manuscript consists 14 thin, fragile lacquered and (partly) gilded palm leaf folios with two wooden covers. Four lines of black lacquer writing in large square letters on an undecorated silver ground and the narrow punctuation symbols in red ink indicate the early time of origin (N. F. Singer: “14th century to early decades of the 18th century”) The lotus flower that graces the front page can be found in a tighter form as the radiance on Buddha images (see no. 1 in this catalogue).

17 Rare “Angel”-Kammavaca, Burma, late 18th to mid-19th century
This Buddhist manuscript consists 12 thin lacquered and gilded palm leaf folios with two wooden covers. Five lines of script on gold ground with fine floral decoration. ANGELS (!) separated by parrots in circles on both covers and Hintha birds in framed circles resemble mandalas. Even though the cover size match the size of the leaves, it’s not sure whether the wooden covers are originally belongs to this manuscript or replaced damaged or lost pieces. But however, images of Western angels on Kammavaca covers are extremely rare, especially in this quality (please compare reference below).

18 “Mandalay” Kammavaca, Burma, late 19th / early 20th century
This Buddhist manuscript consists 16 lacquered and gilded folios with two wooden covers. With 6 lines of script it represents the Kammavaca manuscripts of the late 19th / early 20th century. In contrast to the common manuscripts of this time, the figures on the first and last leaf hold inscribed banners in Burmese script that can be read “Mandalay City”, "Tama kone", "Kammawa-sa”. It’s also inscribed with the artist’s and merchant's name "U Sein" as the maker’s signature.

19 “Mandalay” Kammavaca, Buddhist manuscript, Burma, 1934/35
This large important Buddhist manuscript consists 14 lacquered and gilded folios with two wooden covers. With 7 lines of script it follows the chronological order that Noel Singer describes in the below mentioned source from the very early Kammavaca with 4 lines, Kammavaca from the 18th / early 19th century with 5 lines, the 19th /early 20th century Kammavaca with 6 lines and the Kammavaca from the first half of the 20th century with 7 lines of script (Singer shows a very similar Kammavaca, dated 1937)
This rare high-quality manuscript from Mandalay is dated 1296 Myanmar Era (1934/35), was donated by Daw Khin Son, their children, grand and great-grandchildren, all mentioned by name At the same time the family donated to the monastery near Nyaungdon, northwest of Rangoon, “as a good deed for nibbana”.
Both covers show the long donor’s inscription, the leaves are inscribed with “Mandalay Tatkon” and even with the artist’s name: Ko Din Than.

20 Manuscript box and palm leaf manuscript, Northwest Thailand (Lanna), Shan or Laos, 19th century
A wooden storage box for palm leaf manuscripts including its Kammavaca. The manuscript, possibly written in Tai Tam or Lao Tam script and incised on ordinary palm leaves, bound together with a red cotton cord. The wooden covers, originally decorated with coloured glass and lacquer are heavily damaged, while the palm leaves are still readable and in good age-related condition.
The box, standing on four beautiful carved feet, is lacquered black with lavish floral decorations in gold. An almost identical box is part of the British Library collection (Or 16893).
An old sticker inside the lid of the box is labelled “Palembang, Sum.”. But it’s neither the origin of the box nor of the manuscript. Probably purchased in Sumatra about 100 years ago.
Both manuscript covers are very fragile. A few lose pieces of wood, lacquer and one large, green-coloured glass tile will be added.

21 Writing box, teak wood, Southeast Asia, late 19th / early 20th century
This portable writing box from colonial times is made of teak wood, originally lacquered black. The box is divided in four storage compartments of different sizes - elongated and square, three deep, one elongated flat section - has a finely carved domed lid, fixed to the box with two hinges. The vanishing lacquer reveals the beautiful texture and grain of the wood.
As common for traditional Southeast Asian furniture the box was not crafted with glue or nails, but with mortise and tenon joinery, expressing a particular aesthetic value. The bottom has been mounted with 12 wooden pins.
A special edge to the back of the box holds the lid, when opened.

22 Sazigyo binding ribbon, Burma, mid-19th century
An indigo blue sazigyo with a thick cord, large letters and a restrained decoration to both ends of the ribbon. Good condition with some wear here and there. A minor damage, where the sazigyo was wrapped around the edges of the Kammavaca.

23 Sazigyo binding ribbon, Burma, mid to late 19th century
An indigo blue sazigyo with a thick cord, the typical loop of an old sazigyo, the woven text in one long line of large letters, restrained decoration to both ends and the edges of the ribbon. Good condition with some wear here and there and two minor damages, where the sazigyo was wrapped around the edges of the Kammavaca.

This 5 m long sazigyo with rich decoration is in very good condition with strong colours, good contrast and only a few stains. The loop is in very good condition. The cord has a flat end that probably starts to dissolve. As usually the sazigyo starts with the initial invocation “zeyatu” enclosed between a fish and a lion beast. It’s dated 1289 ME.

Revocation consequences
In the event of a valid revocation, the performance delivered by either party is to be returned and the proceeds of any utilization (e.g. interest) submitted.
If you cannot submit / return the received performance and benefits (e.g. utilization benefits) to us, or submit / return them only partially or in a deteriorated condition, you need to compensate us to the required extent. You must pay compensation for degraded items only insofar as the deterioration is due to handling of the items beyond testing of properties and functionality.
Testing of properties and functionality is to be understood as testing and evaluation of the respective goods as is possible and common in retail shops, for instance.
Items which can be dispatched in packages are to be returned at our expense and risk.
Items which cannot be dispatched in packages will be fetched from your premises. Payment obligations must be fulfilled within 30 days.
The time limit becomes effective on dispatch of your revocation notice or the item for you, and on its receipt for us.
