One of my favorite things about living in Omaha is the ability to enjoy four distinct seasons. I grew up in Florida, land of perpetual summer, so this weather still amazes me. As much as I dislike the cold, I really do look forward to changing seasons and different winter activities. Winter is a great time to visit your local library. Every OPL branch has special events and programs for all ages that will help get you into the holiday spirit. Build a gingerbread house, make DIY holiday gifts, or simply enjoy some festive music. You may even bump into the jolly old elf, himself! If you are planning to dazzle family and friends with your amazing culinary talents, be sure to check out our collection of holiday cookbooks. There are always new ones coming out, and what better way to “try before you buy” than to borrow one and test out a few recipes! Whether you are looking for Hanukkah sweets and treats, or the Barefoot Contessa’s latest, Make It Ahead, you will find it at OPL. If the weather takes a nasty turn, which is always a possibility, there are many things you can do from home through OPL’s website, omahalibrary.org. Download a few free holiday songs from Freegal or decide on last-minute holiday gifts with a quick comparison in Consumer Reports Online. You can even download books for your eReader, including Wally Lamb’s Wishin’ and Hopin’: A Christmas Story. You will then be prepared to meet Mr. Lamb when he visits Omaha in April for the OPL Foundation’s annual fundraiser, A Novel Affaire. If you’re not sure what to read, OPL’s talented staff can help! Request a custom reading list on our website by simply sharing a few things about yourself and the books you’ve enjoyed reading, and we will send you a list of suggested books. If you’re interested in discovering new, local authors, check out the Author Fair in February and see what Omaha authors are publishing. There is definitely something for everyone! Omaha Public Library celebrated 10 years of Omaha Reads in 2014. This year’s selection, The Meaning of Names by Karen Gettert Shoemaker, recognized the centennial of World War I and the sacrifices of men and women on the home front. The Meaning of Names was checked out more than 530 times during the Omaha Reads campaign.

Author Visits OPL welcomed several visiting authors during the fall. Individuals of all ages and interests met authors, learned more about the inspiration behind their work, and had copies of their books personally signed. Authors who made appearances at OPL this fall include Joseph Bruchac, John Kalkowski, Lydia Kang, Tonya Kuper, Mark Langan, James Larson, Jennifer Nielsen, Chris Raabe, Karen Gettert Shoemaker, Lemony Snicket, and Gary Soto.

Read it & Eat Culinary Conference — More than 115 people attended the fourth annual Read it & Eat! Culinary Conference. Participants enjoyed hearing from local bakers and listening to acclaimed cookbook authors discuss the event’s theme: Baked Delights. Samples of baked goods were available throughout the event for tasting.

Hispanic Heritage Family Festival In honor of National Hispanic Heritage Month, South Omaha Library hosted its second annual Hispanic Heritage Family Festival. Hundreds gathered to enjoy cultural cuisine from local restaurants, live musical and dancing performances, face painting, a bounce house, and even a chili-pepper eating contest.

Dec—2014 Survey: Omaha Artists Investigate the Omaha art world with a sense of curiosity and discovery. Through a cross section of 50 Omaha-based artists, the Michael Phipps Gallery will be transformed into an index of complexity, offering a rare opportunity to re-formalize the context in which the art of Omaha is viewed. For this place-based research initiative, the library simultaneously serves as an access point for information and a place to build community. Outstanding Volunteer When Alex Priest approached Linda Trout, OPL community outreach and partnership manager, with an offer to help with Michael Phipps Gallery exhibits, she was surprised. “No one with his credentials had ever offered their help,” Trout said. Priest—curator, spatial thinker and designer—has been the gallery’s volunteer curator since November 2013. The Michael Phipps Gallery is located on the first floor of W. Dale Clark Main Library; it is open during regular library hours and free to the public. Priest credits the public library for building the foundation of his art-based career. “In my youth in rural Iowa, libraries provided me

Priest emphasizes that art is for everyone and anyone. “It doesn’t matter why you are [at the library]; who you are with; your age, race, sexuality, gender, bank account, housing situation, etc. As we continue to develop the gallery’s programming and spatial organization, the space will capture the potential zeal of the library.” Trout couldn’t be more pleased with the gallery’s evolution. “Alex has curatorial education, experience, and most importantly, he has a passion for libraries. Working with him has been a great learning experience. I feel very lucky that he is willing to devote his time and knowledge to the Phipps Gallery and to OPL,” Trout concluded. Writing Contest Young writers in grades 5-8 are invited to submit their original works of fiction to the Friends of Omaha Public Library (FOPL) for the 2015 Virginia Frank Writing Contest. Contest participants are asked to select a character from a book they enjoyed and feature that character in their essay. Entries will be accepted through March 2. Winners will be notified in the spring and honored at a celebration at W. Dale Clark Main Library on April 19, 2015.

The top three winners from each grade will receive cash awards: $100 for first place, $50 for second, and $25 for third. The school libraries of the winning students will be recognized with matching cash prizes. A love of learning and a desire to show people how to do things may be the paving stones for a clear career path. It certainly seemed to be the case for A.V. Sorensen Branch Manager Lucy Lucy Lewis Lewis. While a junior at the University of Michigan studying to become a teacher, a friend of her parents asked if she had ever considered library school. Lewis graduated with an education degree and soon thereafter completed her Master of Library Science. Lewis worked in the university’s library for two years before meeting a young Air Force officer, whom she began to date. Within two months they were engaged, and married four months later. His military career meant moving, and eventually he was assigned

to Offutt Air Force Base in Bellevue. Lewis acquired a position as reference and readers advisory librarian at OPL’s downtown location at 19th & Harney in 1974. After being promoted to a branch manager, Lewis worked in that position at Benson Branch, Millard Branch, Charles B. Washington Branch, Florence Branch, Willa Cather Branch and A.V. Sorensen Branch. Of all her experiences, she most enjoyed working at Millard Branch during its expansion and renovation in 1997. “I loved the chaos,” said Lewis. On December 20, Lewis will retire from OPL with 40 years of service. She said she will most miss the patrons and staff that she’s developed relationships with over the years. “You get to know some people so well that they start to feel like family.” Lewis doesn’t have any specific plans for her retirement yet. First on her “to-do” list is to clean her house and get rid of things. However she spends her retirement years, one thing is certain… she will be busy. “I just can’t sit for too long.” 5

Family Pet Remembered with OPLF Donation A recent Omaha Public Library Foundation donation to purchase copies of the children’s book Professor Astro Cat’s Frontiers of Space was made in memory of a lovable family pet. Jack and Cindy Thiessen of Athens, Ala., made the donation to recognize the passing of Tiger Kitty, an orange tabby belonging to Bob and Sharon Lohrman of Omaha. Cindy and Sharon are sisters. “Tiger Kitty was an adventurer,” Cindy Thiessen said of the cat, who passed away at age 13. “He was a humble, nimble purveyor of happiness to all who came near for a touch of affection or to watch his antics in the neighborhood as viewers giggled from afar.” Thiessen designated her donation for the Professor Astro Cat’s Frontiers of Space because the book encapsulates the “magic and excitement of space” and how Professor Astro Cat translated it into his own domain on earth. Earlier this year, the Omaha Public Library Foundation organized a steering committee of 10 young professionals in Omaha who are passionate about OPL.

The committee has been working to finalize details of a new, member-based organization dedicated to supporting OPLF’s efforts and building awareness of OPL’s programs and services. Membership to the new group, dubbed “the 1877 Society,” is open to adults in their twenties and thirties for an annual $100 donation to OPLF. Member benefits include invitations to exclusive library events, tours of OPL’s private collections, a reduced ticket price to A Novel Affaire, and more.

The group’s name stems from OPL’s origins. On June 13, 1877, the Omaha City Council levied a tax and appointed a library board, thereby making OPL a permanent part of Omaha. Committee member Drew Davies and his team at Oxide Design volunteered to create the 1877 Society logo. “Taking inspiration from historical illustrations and secret societies, the logo is meant to be a fictitious book found deep in the archives of Omaha Public Library,” Davies said. “The mysterious book could possibly contain the original bylaws for the 1877 Society, or even their manifesto. The rough and worn look gives the impression that the society has been around for decades, meeting in secret somewhere in the catacombs below the library.” The group’s new website, launching soon at 1877society.org, will be designed by fellow committee member Jonathan Tvrdik.
