This would give us a few seconds to inch our way (rapidly, in the dark, and without stubbing our toes on the sharp pointed cleats that menace the narrow decks amidships either side), leap simultaneously into the Zodiac, cut the line and push off. We’d start the engine on the first try for a change and race out to mid channel leaving one angry bear smashing two years’ worth of work in our computers and otherwise fouling and wrecking our beloved boat.

Because Mark has a calmer mind than I do, all I said to him was, “If you think you hear the grizzly swimming up let me know and we’ll hang over the side and fire bear spray up his nose. We’ll start the engine and cut the anchor rope and slip away.”

“I’ll let you know,” he said.

I tossed and turned in bed imagining being awakened by a snarling bear in our cabin ready to devour us, but I eventually dozed off. However, during the night I woke up in a panic whenever the boat started rocking really hard and listened for the grizzly.

Toward morning, I realized the rocking was from winds being blown up Princess Royal Reach creating waves that spin around the long curve of Patrick Point. It also dawned on me that grizzlies probably don’t make any noise when they swim.

After a very sleepless (and bear-less!) night, I awoke with one thought.

“A dog,” I said. “We need a dog.”
