AUTOMOTIVEBRANDNEWS
“THE MILD HYBRID PLACES ENTIRELY NEW DEMANDS ON DRIVE TECHNOLOGY.” Dear Reader, “What would actually happen if my brand disappeared from the market tomorrow?” is a question that we as companies should ask ourselves much more often. The latest issue of Automotive Brand News gives us an idea of where and why Optibelt would be missed – not only in the automotive s egment. Without us, it’s possible that luxury liners in Mexico or hightech folding bikes from Lake Constance would have to get along with less motive power ... There are certainly plenty of topics with many ifs and buts in the automotive industry, as the Brand News proves once again. Our colleagues from the original-equipment department show you where the trends in the drive system sector are heading. Because, to be honest, electrification raises many questions – and not only in our industry. So it’s good to know that there’s a bridge technology alongside pure electro-mobility with potential that is nowhere near exhausted: the mild hybrid.
You can also discover why the correct matching of belts and vehicles is so important for workshops and dealers and, of course, all the latest news from Optibelt. We have naturally collected a new handful of bizarre facts from the world of automobility that are guaranteed to make you smile and ensure that this little all-inclusive package is both informative and entertaining. But to get back to the question we asked at the start: the power that inspires us to create the best possible all-round packages for our customers has been a driving force for Optibelt since 1872. And we do everything to ensure that our customers will never have to do with out this unique power – neither tomorrow, nor the day after tomorrow.

OPTIBELT – TWO EXAMPLES OF INNOVATIVE POWER Luxury liners in Mexico
ETN TURISTAR LUJO Optibelt Mexico is one of the leading manufacturers of drive belts for the Mexican market. The past six years have seen a 14-fold increase in revenue. A total of 14 employees provide products and services for a wide range of industries – from paper manufacturing and food processing to the construction and transport segments. One of these is ETN Turistar Lujo – a bus operator that has earned itself an excellent reputation since its founding in 1991. The fleet of luxury coaches from ETN Turistar Lujo serves more than 70 destinations in 24 Mexican states. With all conceivable comforts: the coaches are air-conditioned, have extra-wide seats and touchscreen panels.

Custom solutions for bikes
BERNDS BIKES – THE BIKE BUILDERS FROM LAKE CONSTANCE He sketched his first bike when he was three, and went on to build his first ideas at the age of seven: Thomas Bernds’ whole life revolves around (folding) bikes. In the meantime, he has been offering belt drives on bikes as an alternative to classic chain drives for more than 20 years. Although a belt drive offers numerous advantages for bikes, it does have its own special quirks: while the length of a chain can easily be altered to fit, a belt is a closed system. The bike frame must be constructed in a way that allows it to be fitted. Bernds developed a special tail construction that – like motorcycles – has an open drive system. This allows the toothed-belt drive to be fitted without any problems and – as opposed to solutions provided by other manufacturers – riders can replace it themselves without special tools when the time comes. Since November 2017, all bikes with toothed-belt drives from the Bernds Bikes workshop are fitted with optibelt DELTA CHAIN Carbon Carbon belts. Optibelt is also currently working on the prototype of a particularly long and slim belt for a folding tandem.

For years now, the entire fleet has been fitted with drive belts from Optibelt. “In the past, we battled against one breakdown after another. Many drive belts simply couldn’t cope with the constant stresses under load. After a stringent testing programme with belts from various manu facturers, we were finally convinced by the optibelt TRUCK POWER range from Optibelt,” says Ismael Cerano, fleet manager for maintenance at ETN Turistar Lujo. “The Optibelt drive belts impressed us with extremely high mileage – I can’t recall a single case of us suffering a

YOU CAN’T FIND A COMPATIBLE BELT JUST BY LOOKING
Toothed belts and V-ribbed belts are subject to a perfectly normal wear process. So, sooner or later, the time will come when they have to be replaced. Workshop specialists know from experience just how important it is to fit high-quality parts – and make sure there’s a perfect match between the vehicle and/or the original-equipment number. But why is this so important? After all, many drive belts look almost identical ...
BELT COMPATIBILITY
Page 7
TOOTHED BELTS – THE SPECIFICATIONS ARE DECISIVE Are belts with the same number of teeth, the same width or the same profile also com patible? No – and the reason for this is per fectly simple – even though it may not be visible to the naked eye: toothed belts are specially designed for predefined, enginespecific requirements and replacement at specified intervals. Because of this, their specifications differ radically from one belt to another:
• T he formula of the rubber mixture varies – and this alters factors such as temperature resistance and, for example, the required bending rigidity. • T he materials of the tension cords provide different levels of tensile strength, for example, the cords can be made from glass or aramid fibres. • D ifferences in the materials used for the upper textile layer of the belt backing and belt base, or slight differences in the tooth angle or pitch, all lead to different product properties.
V-RIBBED BELTS ARE NOT JUST ANY OLD BELTS
But here, too, precise matching to the vehicle and/or the original-part number is essential for finding the right quality. To a certain extent, elastic V-ribbed belts are a special case: as they preserve tension throughout their service life, no additional tensioning systems are required. Nevertheless, installing them requires a special mounting tool (optibelt MT-A, optibelt MT-A II) to prevent potential overstretching. Here, it is particularly important to avoid confusion between this type and classic V-ribbed belts.
A CLEAR NUMBER So it’s not a matter of better or worse; it’s all about specific performance dimensions. Tip: It’s good to know that precise matching to vehicles and original-part numbers guarantees clear and safe part assignment. The assignment process is naturally taken off your hands by Optibelt. All you have to do is select the vehicle, then we guarantee that you get the right quality. Replacement “by eye” alone – even when the tooth pitch, the width and the length are identical – is never a good idea. The conclusion is clear: workshop specialists can rely completely on the matching of belts to vehicles by Optibelt.

V-ribbed belts are generally used for power transmission to ancillary aggregates in vehicles. These belts are also designed to meet manufacturers’ specific requirements. Although the failure of a V-ribbed belt is not as critical as the failure of a toothed belt, the same principle applies: sooner or later, a belt that doesn’t fit will cause problems that could potentially lead to damage of the aggregate it drives. In the case of V-ribbed belts, the number of ribs, the profile and the length can be read from the article number.

DRIVE AND SAVE
NEW CHANCES FOR INTERNAL COMBUSTION ENGINES
In the long run, current trends point towards electrification. N evertheless, the most promising drive system alternative is currently the mild hybrid. Here, a 48-volt electrical system expands the existing 12-volt system and enables the generator to act as an additional electric drive.
THE LATEST NEWS FROM THE ORIGINAL- EQUIPMENT DEPARTMENT ... Vehicles with a start-stop function have been a standard feature on Europe’s roads for a long time. However, the new generation of belt-driven starter generators brings entirely new output ratings – and potential savings. Configured for 48-volt electrical systems, it generates additional electric drive power output levels of between 10 and 15 kilowatts. This power can be utilised to reduce the load on the petrol or diesel engine when starting and can provide additional power for accelerating (boost). For the first time, recovered braking energy can be converted back into propulsion.

The special configuration of the mild hybrid demands a drive belt with extremely high performance: The drive switches repeatedly between generator- and crankshaft pulley. For such a task, the RSG belt must be designed to effortlessly cope with up to 1.2 million of these switching cycles. Optibelt has therefore invested in a new, special testing facility to precisely investigate and check the extreme stresses involved. The result: optibelt RSG V-ribbed belts are based on aramid-fibre-reinforced EPDM rubber mixes and special aramid cords. These ensure maximum cyclic bending-stress resistance, extreme tensile strength and optimum wear properties. There’s no doubt about it – the RSG will very soon make its breakthrough as a mass-market product – not only in view of future legal requirements. And will therefore sooner or later play a significant role in the aftermarket. Our advantage: Optibelt will also be the first to offer system-compliant high-performance belts of original equipment quality for aftermarket sales.

A QUANTUM LEAP IN TESTING TECHNOLOGY
Optibelt inaugurates the “test facility of the future” In August 2017, the Arntz Optibelt Group inaugurated the new “test facility of the future”. The innovative test facility, covering an area of some 2,200 square metres, was built for around four million euros at the company’s headquarters in Höxter, Germany. It offers twice the amount of space of its predecessor for testing during serial production and the testing of new developments and customer-specific applications. The energy concept of the new facility guarantees a sustainably low environmental impact and conserves valuable resources. The project was sponsored by the environmental innovation programme of the German Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety with a grant of 650,000 euros. “Without exaggeration, this is a quantum leap for modern testing technology”, said Optibelt’s CEO Reinhold Mühlbeyer. The new facility offers 29 individual testing cells, each with an area of around 50 square metres. The modular and interconnected test bed configuration satisfies the most stringent technical demands and ensures that Optibelt is ideally positioned for the development of tomorrow’s innovative drive system solutions.

VW BEETLE Incredible! One and the same Optibelt drive belt has been guaranteeing the reliability of a VW Beetle 1303 for the past 39 years and has more than 158,000 kilometres on the clock.
The Beetle, first registered on 30 August 1979, is still in the hands of its first owner and, besides its original drive belt, still runs with many other original parts. Optibelt demonstrates that quality is a standard, and by no means just an empty promise. Usually, drive belts must be replaced at considerably shorter intervals. VW has placed its trust in Optibelt quality since 1950, and this reliability pays off – even today, Optibelt is the original-equipment supplier for several VW engines.
Corporate
As in the previous year, Optibelt is taking part in the IAM media campaign in Germany again in 2018. The aim of the campaign is to increase the positive perception of the capabilities of the parts market in the public eye and to support the marketing efforts of qualified independent workshops. After all, good quality is not exclusively the domain of tied workshops. Thanks to components of original-equipment quality, independent workshops can also offer their customers unbeatable value for money. With this campaign, we support the customers of our trading partners.
