a dec ade of o p p o r t u n i t y Event sponsors:

The Manufacturers Directors Conference (MDC) is an exciting opportunity to hear from the best of UK manufacturing and industry experts as they discuss the key trends and influences that are shaping manufacturing for the next decade. The next decade will see the biggest shift in the balance of economic power since the Industrial Revolution, with the rise of the middle class in Asia. An ageing population creates business opportunities in areas like mobility, self-improvement and other ‘third age’ products and services. At the same time the fastest-growing household is the single-person urban unit bringing new needs in everything from housing and local services to product sizes and packaging. Against these challenges, this year’s MDC will provide thought leadership, insight and inspiration to help UK manufacturers navigate the opportunities that face UK industry. Join us at the MDC 2011, we look forward to meeting you and your team,

Dr Graham Honeyman

Chief Executive, Sheffield Forgemasters International Ltd

S T R E A M S

There are three best practice case study streams providing a stimulus in how we can engage with the emerging markets and increase UK competitiveness though improving the skills and productivity of UK manufacturing.

Championing apprentice training and succession planning

Sheffield Forgemasters employs almost 700 people who manufacture large-scale bespoke steel components for diverse industries, including offshore components for power generation and components for the Astute nuclear submarine build. For the company apprentice training forms a key part of Sheffield Forgemasters’ succession planning strategy to ensure it has the skills it needs for the future. In this presentation Dr Honeyman will explain how each of the operations directors on the site is involved in planning apprentice intake for the future to replace skills lost through retirement and other reasons. He will illustrate their own practices including how older, experienced workers teach their skills to young people before they retire.

Chris Horton

Vice President Operations, LINPAC Packaging LTD Chris is currently a board Director of LINPAC Plastics, the largest division as part of the £1.1 billion LINPAC Group. He has line responsibility for the European supply chain and functional responsibility for the divisions worldwide supply chain and New Product Development. Ken Collett

Group Manufacturing Director, Cranes Payment Solutions Integrating Tools and Maintaining Culture – when two worlds collide’

Oldham based Money Controls and its factory of 350 people were part of USA based acquisition at the end of 2010 by Crane Payment Solutions. This presentation will illustrate how the site, regarded highly for its people and process improvement programme, handled the change of ownership, and its adoption of the new owners business system. The presentation will illustrate the stresses and complexities placed on the organisation and its own improvement programme, and will focus on how and why the UK site has maintained its own culture and simultaneously adopted and incorporated the “Crane Business System” and is using this to drive further improvements whilst maintaining the positive culture of the site.

Ewan Burgess

It’s not every day you’re asked to help reinvent one of the High-Tech industry’s most iconic companies, but for Ewan and his team they were asked to exactly that involving every aspect of the manufacturing and supply chain ecosystem. Through radical, strategic change they modernised and cut out huge chunks of the core infrastructure, striving to realise significant cost saving and process efficiencies. In the end, they redesigned a common practice of maintaining sizable finished-goods inventories, eliminated two entire layers of a four-tier distribution network, upgraded their enterprise resource planning and supply chain planning applications, forged closer ties with suppliers and customers, all within less than a year after the project started.

Steve Barker

Head of the ‘Energy Efficiency and Environmental Care’, Siemens UK Sustainability In UK Manufacturing - A Best Practice Approach

“Sustainability” has become a “buzz” phrase in many segments of industry. Nevertheless, there remains widespread misunderstanding of what sustainability really means, how it can be implemented in practice and particularly how it can be used to improve competitive advantage. This presentation therefore aims to reveal the key elements of a “best practice” approach and give authoritative information on successful implementation strategies. These principles are then crystallised in a case study example revealing how a UK electronics manufacturing facility has successfully engaged the seemingly contradictory challenges of improving sustainability and reducing cost whilst simultaneously improving productivity. The Siemens variable speed drives manufacturing plant in Congleton has made substantial progress in the last few years and is an excellent example of “walking the talk”.
