PRACTICAL GUIDANCE ON HYPOGLYCAEMIA AND APPROPRIATE MANAGEMENT OF BLOOD GLUCOSE LEVELS:
A
s the number of people in the UK with type 2 diabetes continues to grow, it is clear that this is one of the biggest health issues facing us today – particularly in older people and South Asian populations.
For example, it is thought that in South Asian groups the prevalence of type 2 diabetes is four- to six-fold higher than in the general population,1 and furthermore, about half of all people in the UK who have diabetes are over the age of 65 years.2,3 Avoiding hypoglycaemia can pose specific challenges for South Asian individuals who wish to fast (for example during Ramadan) and for the older person with multiple co-morbidities. What do we need to know about hypoglycaemia, particularly in these important patient groups? How can we successfully translate guidance for diabetes management into practice during times of fasting for our South Asian patients? How do we balance the risks presented by old age with the need for effective management of blood glucose and avoidance of hypoglycaemia? In this series of complimentary, afternoon meetings, we will examine these challenging questions and more, not only by looking at the latest relevant evidence and recommendations, but also by hosting dedicated sessions examining useful consultation techniques that can be used in our everyday practice for each specific patient group. Whatever your role in the primary care team, we hope that you can join us at what will be an informative and practical afternoon. Dr Wasim Hanif, Consultant Physician and Honorary Senior Lecturer, Birmingham (Conference Chair)
