IN WALDVIERTEL

Blockheide

THINGS TO KNOW BLOCKHEIDE NATURE PARK Granit boulders, birch groves, Scots pines, heather and a pool determine the character of the landscape in the nature park. There are unique and naturally formed natural monuments, such as Christophorusstein (stone of Saint Christopher), Teufelsbett (devil’s bed), Teufelsbrotlaib (devil’s loaf), Koboldsteine (elves’ stones) and Grillensteine (tiny stones) and famous rocking stones. LANDSCAPE & STONES - There are not only huge granite remains, weeds of Lower Austria,

stemless gentians on dry grassland, but also granite which is also on mountain ridges today. MYTHOLOGY - After creation of the world, God wanted to collect the stones located in Manhartsberg. He tied around

an apron and began to work. In the immediate vicinity of Blockheide, the apron got torn and stones fell to the ground. Nevertheless, he was tired, left them here and went home. This is how he forgot the stones, therefore they are still here. 

You can choose of regular dates from May to September to visit the blacksmiths. There, you can watch the farrier when making a horseshoe or shoeing a horse. City of Gmünd

THINGS TO KNOW PLACES OF INTEREST On the town square (protected zone), there are two sgraffito houses, both originate in the 16th century („sgraffere“ - to scratch). These houses catch your eye thanks to their richly decorated façade and battlement. The diamond-shape decoration of the older house is unique in Austria. Château Gmünd is one of the oldest buildings of the city. The château park with a pool and a large number of botanical curiosities looks like a green oasis. A real calm anchor in the city’s centre. Palmenhaus (Palm House), which has been a part of the Château Gmünd, serves as a venue for events with an extraordinary atmosphere. The Old Town Hall (Alte Rathaus), a historic-cultural significant building from the 16th century is a dominant feature of the city’s town square thanks to its onion-domed towers covered by wood shingles. In the 1. floor, there is the city museum of the city Gmünd. Blockheide Nature Park - since 1964, this ca 105 ha protected area exists as a nature park. The landscape is characterised by strong granite boulders, often of spherical shape, birch groves, Scots pines and heather. Similar landscape can be seen only in Scandinavia. The Waldviertler Railway is driving “on romantic rails” and is steaming throughout Waldviertel. Sand oak tree of the city Gmünd - in 2002, an 7 metre long trunk was discovered in consequence of a flood. According to the age determination, the oak trunk is 240 years old and originates somewhere around 650 AD. The trunk was embedded in sand. The air was excluding for more than 1350 years long, which caused a coalification as well as preservation of the trunk. Guided tours through the city Gmünd are offered. 

In the interiors, which can be visited only on guided tours, the entire facility originates from diverse periods. An example for this is a thousand-year-old table top and several tables as well as chairs from the Gothic period, the Renaissance and Baroque period. The castle is still the permanent residence and administrative seat of the Heidenreichstein dominion, which was owned by the Prince Palffy for a long time and since 1961, it has been owned by the Kinsky family. 

Rosenau Castle

THINGS TO KNOW HISTORY Since 1975, wonderful baroque Rosenau Castle (situated 9 km west of Zwettl) accommodates the Austrian Museum of Freemasonry. First mentioned in a document in 1593, the castle became its present appearance when belonging to the Count Leopold Christoph von Schallenberg (1720 - 1797). It is possible he belonged to the Freemasons, but there are no documents proving it. But it was him who decided the 7 rooms of the castle will be lounges. At the beginning of the seventies of the last century, the castle was restored and on 23 April 1975, the museum was opened. The Rosenau Castle is owned by the Lower Austrian Land Government, which has rented the museum rooms to the Museumsverein Schloss Rosenau (Museum association of Rosenau Castle) and hotel as well as gastronomy spaces to Mrs. Margit Zulehner since 1999. SONNENTOR

THINGS TO KNOW PHILOSOPHY In 1988, “SONNENTOR” was founded by Johannes Gutmann, the CEO who was only 23 years old at that time. The young businessman had an extraordinary business idea: He wanted to place on the nationwide and international market the herbal specialities of the organic farmers in the Lower Austrian Waldviertel, where he was born and grew up, under the logo of laughing sun - a mediaeval symbol of life and light with 24 rays, which still adorns many farms. Thus, he was far ahead of the current organic trend. A significant feature of his idea was right from the beginning refinement of raw materials directly at organic farms, in order to enable the small farm to survive, to make use of experience and care of the farmers, and thus to achieve the highest degree of responsibility and transparency. 

Castle RAPPOTTENSTEIN

THINGS TO KNOW HISTORY It is a medieval castle in the town of Rappottenstein in the north-west of Lower Austria. It hasn’t even been conquered and thus it belongs to best preserved castles in Austria. Around 1150, Rapoto of Kuenring founded the mighty Rappottenstein castle in Waldviertel to secure the Kuenringer‘s possession and to protect the borders. The castle Rappottenstein was of great importance right from the beginning. On the one hand, it lays in the middle of the extensive possession of the Kuenringer - it was thus a stable centre in stormy times. On the other hand, it also protected the “Griessteig“, an ancient side branch of “Beheimsteig”, which is still provable in the municipal territory. This way led from the Danube through the Nordwald (northern forest) to the Bohemian land. After the fall of the Kuenringer, the castle came to the lords of Dachsberg in 1305, to the Starhemberg family in 1423, and to the lords of Landau in 1546. Rebellious farmers laid siege to the castle in 1597, but could not seize it. Swedish troops also laid siege to no avail to the castle in 1645. In 1664, the castle came by purchase to today‘s owners, the counts of Abensperg and Traun. 

Altenburg Abbey

THINGS TO KNOW HISTORY The visit the Benedictine Abbey of Altenburg, founded in 1144, resembles a time travel through the centuries: during the tour you can see the medieval monastery walls, the baroque splendour and the contemporary architecture in harmony. For centuries, the remains of monastery complex from the 12th century were hidden in the underground. In the course of archaeological excavations, these almost forgotten witnesses of the monastic life have been revealed again since the founding time. Now, they are accessible to visitors on the tours through the monastery. Its present appearance is attributed to the artist abbot Placidus Much (1715 - 1756). He assembled the best craftsmen and talented artists of his time in Altenburg to realize his vision of a new monastery. The master builder Joseph Munggenast, the painters Paul Troger and Johann Jakob Zeiller and innumerable sculptors and stucco artists created the monastery complex as it is presented today. Abbey church, library, Kaiserstiege (imperial stares) and Marble hall were designed by Paul Troger with partly monumental ceiling frescoes - so Altenburg bears the name „Troststift“ quite correctly! The nature-styled abbey gardens form the flowering framework for this unique baroque ensemble and invite to cultural experience as well as to enjoyment of nature. Since the year 2014, the abbot Thomas Renner is leading the small monastic community. Benedictiner of Altenburg look after not only the parish of Altenburg but also the parish of Horn and the pilgrimage basilica Maria Dreieichen. 

Rosenburg Castle

THINGS TO KNOW HISTORY Large parts of the Kamp Valley and the Horn Basin were already favoured settlement areas in prehistoric times. In medieval times the Waldviertel was still part of the great Northern Forest that separated the three large settlement regions comprising the Bavarian-Austrian Danube Plain, the Weinviertel region and South Moravia from the Bohemian Basin. About 1.000 years ago the settlement of this hardly accessible region began under the leadership of the Babenberg margraves. Several free noble dynasties initiated the colonisation and thereby established a number of counties. Around the year 1156, the medieval realm known as “Poigreich” was united with the march, which was elevated to the status of a duchy; the red-white-red escutcheon from the House of Babenberg was also adapted. The Rosenburg was mentioned in document in 1175 for the first time, in relation to the area of the border along the Kamp River between Poigreich and the Babenberg settlements with the centres, the Benedictine Altenburg Abbey and the Gars-Thunau castle complex. As the owner was named a Gozwin de Rosenberg. The castle’s name is also decisive for the naming. 

Hluboká Castle

THINGS TO KNOW HLUBOKÁ CASTLE In the second half of the 13th century, Hluboká Castle was built at the site by Bohemian kings as a watch castle. As time went on, the castle was possessed by various nobilities, such as the Pernštejn family which built the second largest Bohemian pond Bezdrev. The significant nobility of the Neuhaus family bought the manor Hluboká and had converted the Gothic castle into a Renaissance castle. In the 16th century, the manor came into possession of the Malovec family of Malovice. Then, the Spanish general Dón Baltazar de Marradas became the manor. Then Johann Adolf I. Schwarzenberg bought the castle to his nephew in 1661. At the beginning of the 18th century, the castle was rebuilt in baroque style. Between 1840 and 1871, the castle was completely reconstructed and converted according to the Neo-Gothic style. The park and surrounding landscape was remodelled as well. The reconstruction was influenced by travels in England by the former owner, prince Johann Adolf II. Schwarzenberg and his wife Eleonore, a born princess of Liechtenstein. The royal castle Windsor was most influential model in this reconstruction. The Schwarzenberg family stayed in Hluboká until the end of 1939, when Dr. Adolf Schwarzenberg emigrated overseas due to the Nazis. 
