Long Distance Hiking and Walking Trails Wallonia offers endless hiking possibilities; from shorter circuits to longer itineraries lasting several days.

The Association of Long Distance Hiking (GR) Created more than 60 years ago 'L'Association des Sentiers de Grande Randonnée' (Long Distance Hiking Association) was created to raise awareness, promote, encourage and facilitate the 5000 km of mapped out routes for walking, hiking and cycling tourism throughout the region. The association has created itineraries from longer week-long routes to shorter - do in a day routes (15-25 km). Some routes have been designed for families (7-10km). Download the GPX file for free or buy the topo-guides directly on the site: www.grsentiers.org The GR Trails signposting are permanent and standardized, created to remove any concerns about your routes. GR routes are marked with horizontal white and red lines. Whilst the inland GR routes (which form a loop of several days) have gradually been characterized by horizontal yellow and red lines.

The Top GR Hiking Trails • The Trappist Abbey Route (290 km) : a route that takes you from abbey to abbey, discovering Trappist beers such as Chimay, Rochefort and Orval. Divided into two sections (Orval-Rochefort (116 km) and RochefortChimay (174 km), the route crosses the 'Fagne region', the forests of Chimay, the banks of the river Meuse and then the 'Famenne' and the 'Ardennes massif' regions. Follow the specific GR marking denoting Abbeys.

The Trappist Abbey Route • Chimay Forest Route (178 km) in Legardien a green © WBT - :Olivier 90,000 hectare setting this route is marked with nine shelters in the colours of the forest. For an extra adventure, hikers on the trail can choose to stay the night in the forest.

Long Distance Walking & Hiking Trails in the Ardennes (known as GTA) • La Transardennaise (160 km) : connects La-Roche-en-Ardenne to Bouillon, crossing the lush green valleys of the Lesse, Ourthe and Semois rivers in 7 stages: La Roche-en-Ardenne - Sprimont (SainteOde) - Saint-Hubert - Nassogne - Mirwart Daverdisse - Paliseul - Bouillon. •L a Transfamenne (57 km) : continues La Transardennaise from Nassogne to join La Roche-en-Ardenne in 3 stages: Nassogne - Marche-en-Famenne - Marcourt La Roche-en-Ardenne.

• La Transgaumaise (140 km) : discover 'Little Provence', connecting the Gaume in Belgium and French Lorraine in 6 stages: Virton - Torgny - Montmédy (F) Orval - Ste Cécile - Izel - Virton. •T he trail of the Ourthe and Laval Valleys (105 km) : star route composed of 5 loops from 17 to 27 km, starting from Sainte-Ode (Domaine de Beauplateau), in the Parc des Deux Ourthes. Other Long Distance Itineraries • E scapardenne - Eislek Trail (106 km) : between Kautenbach (Luxembourg) and La Rocheen-Ardenne. The cross border route follows a marked trail in both directions, divided into five stages: Kautenbach (L) – Clervaux (L) – Asselborn (L) – Houffalize – Nadrin – La Roche-en-Ardenne.

• B etween the Lesse and Lomme rivers (78 km) : a three-day itinerary in the Forest of Saint Hubert with three shelters. There are also 16 options set up with nearby villages to spend the night in a gite. If you fancy taking a stroll for a few hours you can also cover part of the route that way.

• A rt Trails (140 km) : follow this large loop dotted with more than 50 works of art including artistic sculptures and shelters suspended, planted and elevated in the valley around Ciney, Gesves, Hamois, Havelange, Ohey and Somme-Leuze by Belgian and International artists playing with space, proportion and symmetry, but always with wood. Shorter loops also allow families to complete easier trails between 10 and 15 km.

• S aint-Jacques de Compostelle : the major routes leading to 'St Jacques de Compostelle' which have been updated since the nineties share many sections of the GR network. Step by step 1

W ith your back to the museum, take a right. You then pass over the Gette River. Head to Helecine Castle estate. E nter the Château d'Hélécine estate via car park 1. Then walk along the pond on your left until you reach the castle façade. W alk along the façade of the Château Hélécine. Then turn right, then left. Then take the cobbled path.

Sulpice'- (St Sulpice Church), take the little path called 'Le Brouc', on the right, and walk along the 'Petite Gette' stream. 11

B efore the small bridge, take a left and continue on this path.

administration buildings and continue towards the 'Chapelle Sainte-Croix' (Chapel).

A t the end of the cobbled path, turn right and pass in front of the 'L'église SaintMartin' (St. Martin's Church).

O n your right, you can see the Beekborne estate's vineyards. And no, you're not dreaming, there is indeed a giant red bench that dominates the hill. Y ou have just taken the 'Chavée de la Roualette' (Holloways & Sunken Paths). After crossing the wooded area, turn right onto the 'Chavée Theunis'.

'Chavée de la Vieille Cense'. If you see straw bales on the path, don't worry, they are positioned especially to prevent flooding. In rainy weather, you can continue straight on 'Rue de la Vieille Cense' (street). You can then rejoin the main path.

The Grandeur of Abbey & Forest

In the 13 th century the Monk's Order of Citaux erected one of the largest abbeys in the Christian world. Despite its attack during the French Revolution in 1789, the impressive ruins still testify to its ecclesiastical power today. Exploring the surrounding areas you will discover the forest opening up like a large nave lined with tall beech trees. It paves the way in and sheds interesting dappled light onto those that walk below on the rich forest path sprinkled with a rich landscape of daffodils and blueberries scattered throughout the valleys and fringing the ponds. As you reach the edge of the forest, you will find a road leading to the villages of La Roche and Tangissart which are comforting and peaceful in their isolation. A steep descent takes you down into the valley onto the stream where beavers make their mangroves. Large forests, meadows, wetlands and exceptional heritage are the highlights of this trip. It's a truly varied and splendorous walk to behold.

The beautiful forests around Villers protect the precious ruins of Villers la Ville Abbey like a soft green cloak. Let the peaceful serenity of this walk transport and inspire you.

This walk, from Binche to Vodgoriacum, is a compendium of the history - past and present of the town of Binche, elements that still make it famous and popular today. At the start of this 6.4 km walk is the town hall and its belfry, recognized as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. Walk along the town walls, considered to be among the best preserved in Europe, and you'll discover the Bette towers and cellars, as well as the Brasserie 'La Binchoise' or the Collegiate Church of St-Ursmer. On your way, the Gallo-Roman Museum of Waudrez offers a friendly welcome during opening hours and two viewpoints (Mont Sarah and Mont de la Justice) offer fantastic panoramas of the city and the region. Starting point and parking Tourist office - Grand-place - 7130 binche (Less than 1km from binche sncb train station)

Step by step 1

O pposite the town hall go down the little street on the right. At the crossroads continue walking straight in front of you and keep following the cobbled street.

A t the end of it, leave the 'Rue du Rempart Saint-Georges' (street) on your left and pass between the last house and the 'La Tour Saint-Georges' (St Georges Tower) also known as 'La Tour de la Sorcière' (the Witches Tower) to come out on the 'Rue Saint-Georges' (St Georges Street) on the right. Follow the rampart until you get to the car park; go around it to return to the 'Faubourg Saint-Paul' in front of you.

T ake the path on your right, when you arrive at the stream, continue the route on the right until the N90 (Mons Route). On your right, go along the road towards Mons for 75m and be careful crossing.

B etween the houses numbered 233 and 231, take the passageway that leads you to 'Musée Gallo- Romain' (Museum) in Waudrez. On the right go up the old roman road. a little signpost signaling 'La Ferme de la Princesse'- a farm known for its 'foie gras' and other duck specialties.

C ontinue on the RAVeL route until you get to the junction with 'Avenue Prince Baudouin', which you need to take onto the right hand side. Continue for about 100 metres and take 'Rue Frilée' (Frilée Street) on the right hand side.

T hen taking the 1st street on the left climb the Mont de la Justice. At the top on your left, you'll discover a magnificent panorama of the region, such as the Estinnes wind turbines, Strepy-Thieu lifts etc.

ontinue on the route to the right, going 12 C down 'La Rue du Four à Chaux' (Street) until you get to 'La Place du Centenaire '– which you need to cross.

C ontinue straight ahead and stay on the main road. At the bottom, continue to the left and take the path that leads you to the old mill 'Moulin de Ma Campagne'.

C ross the asphalt street and take the path in front of you to continue your walk. You then come to another asphalt street. Go down the third path until you get to the end.

T he walk begins in front of Charleroi station. Walk along the bus parking area to the left.

C ross the 'Eau d´Heure', a river that was channeled to provide the water needed to cool the furnaces.

A t the roundabout, continue straight along the Sambre River (green RAVeL sign and GR® hike markings) by taking the towpath.

Y ou walk alongside the 'bateau-chapelle'.

O n the left, the 'Château de Cartier' (castle) - the family seat of Marguerite. Yourcenar, the first woman elected to 'l'Académie Française' (French Academy). Cross the park and reach the back of the castle where the now disused Marchienne au-Pont' swimming pool is located. Opposite you arrive at the metro station. Make the return trip by taking the sky train to Charleroi station.

O n your left, you walk past the last blast furnace n° 4 of the Duferco factory, which died out in 2008.

Y ou pass under a pipe where the coal was once conveyed to the blast furnaces.

W alk along the large Street Art fresco for more than 700m.

The White Water Walk

The route is dotted with springs and streams which, together, form the two valleys of the region: the valleys of the 'Eau Blanche' whose name comes from the whitish appearance left by the limestone bed of the river, and the Black Water whose slate laden beds give a darker reflection. Located above the cliff, sits 'Franc Bois', where the discovery of flint and tools attest to the presence of man since the Paleolithic age. Near the old fortifications, you get a remarkable view of the Village of Lompret.

This walk exudes nature in all its glory, imbued with peace and calm: wooded valleys combine harmoniously with the rushing rivers and streams.

The circular route of the High Fens

We follow the path on the left which winds its way along the fen, using the wooden footbridges built on piles above the moor: the heritage of a construction technique which was already being used in the early Middle Ages on a route that led through the Fens, the via Mansuerisca. At Les Wez we're in the middle of nowhere, right in the heart of the nature reserve. What vastness! A place at which travellers surely shuddered, only to breathe a sigh of relief when they discovered the inn at Baraque-Michel. You return via Poleur Fen, where traces of human activity from more than a hundred years ago are still visible today. The discovery tour continues at Neur Lowé, a microcosm in itself that is home to all the plant species from the plateau of the High Fens.

Starting from Signal de Botrange, we walk to the viewing platform of Walloon Fen, from where you can enjoy an incredible view out over the heath and moor landscape.

From the ‘Tour des Vieux-Joncs’ up until the ‘Impasse des Ursulines’, follow the green signage (looks like a ‘green eye’). At the top of the ‘Montagne de Bueren’ (374-step staircase), the red signage will link to the ‘Saint Leonard’ esplanade.

Step by step 1

F rom the 'Musée de la Vie Wallonne' take the 'Rue du Palais'(street), situated behind 'Le Palais des Princes-Évêques.

W hen you reach number 58, a doorway gives you access to the Citadel's ramparts via some steps leading to 'La Tour des Joncs'.

A t the top of the steps, you'll find terraces and beautiful esplanades to take a break or sit for a picnic. Follow the trail to the right, towards the 'Bois des Mineurs'. E xiting the 'Bois des Mineurs', the path leads down to 'L'impasse des Ursulines'.

A t the passage exit you'll see the stairway marked 'Bueren'. Take the 374 steps right up to the top.

A t the top turn right and follow the 'Rue Au Péri' (street), which continues to climb higher.

T ake the stairway 'Monument du 14e de Ligne'. It's a great viewpoint to take in the old Citadel walls. Towards the right, follow the tree-lined boulevard - in balcony form, which dominates the city.

A t the height of the Belvedere, take the stairs down towards 'Le Bois des Carmélites' where you'll find a second passageway dating back to the 18th century.

Descend down by the winding path.

10 I t brings you to an esplanade 'Saint

Leonard' that was once a dock for the export and import of wine in the 18th century. Take the 'Rue Delfosse' (street), which leads you to 'La Rue Hors-Château' (street). 11

W hile walking in the street 'Rue HorsChâteau', you can admire on your right the 'Impasse Hubart' and 'Impasse de L'Ange' and 'La Cour Saint-Antoine' (courtyard) to your left.

Around the Castle

From the castle, walk along this superb alley of beech trees, a natural extension of this gem of Walloon heritage.

At the bottom of the descent, 'Val Tibiémont' surprises you and gives the impression of time standing still. This forgotten hamlet, surrounded by woods and bathed by the Hoyoux River, represents one of the most beautiful images of Condroz region: nothing here seems to disturb the absolute calm. A feeling that you will undoubtedly find when visiting the Château de Modave.

You then cross the wood that leads you to Petit-Modave, a village that has disappeared. Due to King Leopold II, reservoirs were ordered to be drilled in the surrounding area to provide Brussels with particularly healthy and pure water, and the hamlet was destroyed as a result. The walk follows the nature reserve via a beautiful path lacing through an alder undergrowth: the area is humid, the soil rich. At the top, you walk along a large farm, isolated from the world but right in the heart of its land.

F rom the castle, go down the beech-lined alley and take the path that goes to the right.

T ake the first path on the right.

L eave the path on your left and at the Y- junction take the path that goes off to the left.

A t the T-junction with 'Rue de la Forge' (street), turn left.

T urn left and take the little bridge to cross 'Le Hoyoux' River.

A t the T-junction, turn left, 'Rue Petit Modave'(street).

T ake the 2nd path on your right. Continue straight on along 'Le Hoyoux'.

The Rafhay Woodlands

Situated in the hollows of a landscape blending the gentle region of Herve with the diversity of the Ardenne massive, only the slate spire of the Saint Sebastien church offers a clue to the presence of the charming village of Olne. At the start of the walk, 17th century limestone farms and houses prettily punctuate the walk. Then, via little paths and meadows, and through the stanchions, you finally reach the Rafhay woodlands. From there, you can enjoy a 360 degree panorama over 'Saint-Hadelin', the most picturesque hamlet of the area. You can then descend down into the little wood called 'Gerarheid' with charming limestone houses and its intriguing 'nail tree'. After passing a section of the 'old road' to Liege , continue to 'Vieux Tileul' where a stunning panorama opens up over the village of Olne.

This gorgeous walk starts at the centre of Olne village, one of the most beautiful villages of Wallonia where you'll discover all the joys of Wallonia's heritage and its surrounding countryside.

Starting point and parking Olne Sports Centre Car Park Access by 'Rue Bouteille'(street) - 4677 Olne

Step by step 1

F rom the parking lot of the sports centre and the Olne municipal school, go to the centre of the village by the 'Chemin des Ecoliers'.

O nce you've past the municipal administration, take the dead end on the right to reach 'Rue Falise' (street).

T urn right into 'Rue Falise' (Street) and follow the road which continues along the trail, 'Pré des Paul', and which joins 'Rue Rafhay'. A passageway next to the 'Jardins de la Falise' (natural food store).

A t the crossroads, continue straight on 'Chemin de la Justice' and at the next crossroads continue straight ahead, to enter into 'Rue Martinmont' (street).

T ake the first lane on the left, this path continues through the meadows. After 300-400 metres, take the path on the right which goes towards 'Rue Rafhay'(street).

C ross 'Rue Rafhay' (street) and continue on the path opposite, 'Rue Pont Al Plantche' (street).

W hen you leave the woods, go down 'Rue Saint-Hadelin'(street) to 'Chemin du Rouau'.

P ass next to the 'Château de Saint Hadelin' and continue straight on this path which becomes 'Sauvage Mêlée'.

10 G o to 'Vieux Tilleul' (Lime Tree), a

remarkable tree which dates from the years 1700-1800. It was originally the tree of justice of Saint-Hadelin. Its interior is almost hollow and shows traces of burns… One of its branches has been transformed into an artistic sculpture 'Olne, histoire d'avenir', by the artist Eric Hagelstein (best admired at the front of the Olne omnisport hall – a beautiful viewpoint from the 'Old Tilleul'. 11

J ust before the houses, take the path on the left, which joins 'Rue Herdavoie' (street).

Valley of the Fairies

Be enchanted by the Fairy Village Achouffe is located at the foot of the 'Valley of Fairies' where the 'Martin-Moulin' stream meets the 'Chevral' stream. It is one of the most charming villages in the area. At the confluence of the two rivers, the 'Domaniale Pisciculture' (fish farm) was founded just by the bridge.

Do you know the legend of the 'Nutons'? These dwarf characters, typically from the Ardennes, lived in a cave (such as the 'Trou des Nutons' Route de la Roche in Houffalize) and had a tunnel going as far as the 'Notre-Dame de Fôret' chapel, between Taverneux and Sommerain villages. During the night, they repaired the Houffalian's shoes. Hence the popularity of Houffalize and its local reputation as the 'City of Nutons'. In 1807, two local refractories took refuge in the cave. They were shoemakers. At night the inhabitants of the region would leave their shoes along with other provisions, finding them repaired the next day.

Tourist village par excellence, Achouffe is also known for its brewery. Founded by two brothers–in-law, (one Walloon and the other Flemish) in an old farm, Chouffe beer is brewed exclusively with water from the 'Cedrogne' spring which gives it its unique flavour.

Step by step 1

F rom the car park, follow the main street then take the first street on the right after the chapel.

P ass the pond, and then go towards the other large building. A path circles the building and leads on the other side to the ‘Chevral' Creek Valley, also known as the ‘Valley of the Fairies'.

C ontinue to follow the path along the stream. After about a kilometre, two bridges successively follow one after the other.

A fter the second bridge, stay on the steep path which crosses a fir forest and continues through the bare heights.

G o down towards the ‘Martin-Moulin' valley. Watch out for wet roots and rocks.

I n the valley, leave the mill on the left and follow the course of the stream.

G o up and down among the roots and rocks, taking the small footbridges, until the path widens again to return to Achouffe, passing through some ancient ponds.

Belvaux, in the heart of the ‘Famenne-Ardenne UNESCO Global Geopark', is a pretty little village in the ‘Calestienne' region where you can admire its typical limestone lawns where rare varieties bloom. From the Saint-Laurent chapel and the bread oven, you walk along the emblematic Lesse River before discovering a picturesque forest trail taking you close to the rapids of the Lesse. Step by step

Rue du Hambeau (street) 10 - 5580 Belvaux Parking is close to the River Lesse and the Saint-Laurent.

W ith the River Lesse and the ‘Caracolis' sculptures (Walloon for snails and the nickname of the inhabitants of Belvaux) on your left, and the chapel and bread oven on your right, head to the bridge (± 130m).

A fter the bridge, continue for ± 1km into Rue du Gouffre (Street), along the Lesse (on your left) for almost the entire route.

R etrace your steps and continue on the path that will branch off on the right and will quickly lead to a crossroads with a small clump of trees near a picturesque stone bridge overlooking the ‘Ry d'en Faule' (sometimes also written Rau d'en Faule).

J ust a few metres after the small stream that passes below the road, you will see on your left a manual lifting barrier, take the forest path that goes up to the left behind the barrier.

H ere, turn left. The winding path climbs, while along the Han-sur-Lesse Animal Park on your left during the first part. Moreover, you will quickly see the enclosure of white storks.

C ontinue to follow the trail that goes up a few hundred metres before descending towards the Lesse.

C ontinue on the trail that winds between the trees for ± 1.1 km, then take the trail that goes down to your right.

A fter 600 m, at the T-junction, turn right. Follow the trail that partly runs along the ‘Enfaule' stream (on your left).

A fter approximately 500m, near the tree on your left with the markings of the walk (a yellow cross), you can hear the sound of the Lesse River rushing between the rocks. Make a small detour (just go down to the left for about 50 metres) to admire a wonderful spectacle: the Lesse rapids, an emblematic and eminently photogenic place where the wild Lesse makes its way through huge moss covered rocks.

10 After ± 900m, you are back to the small

picturesque bridge with the cluster of trees, turn left to go up to the Belvaux rapids. You will walk the first forest path taken in the opposite direction until you find the manual lifting barrier. 11

A rriving at the barrier, turn right into ‘Rue du Gouffre' (street).

back at the starting point.

Walking in Celtic Lands

The descent towards the Ourthe River sets the tone: a day that will undoubtedly prove rather sporty so be prepared. In the forest, the walk bypasses the site of ‘Cheslé', a natural fortress that the Celts occupied in the sixth millennium BC. At ‘Pré Balthazar', the path quickly turns into a trail for anglers. It then becomes more difficult to progress: you'll have to climb over tree trunks and rocks. The river creates an enchanting landscape making all the effort worth it. In Vermoulin, the route leaves this haven of peace until you reach the Bérismenil ridges.

Welcome to this part of the wild Ardennes where the River Ourthe has carved out deep valleys. In this chaotic landscape, it emerges here and there through the rocks and promontories.

Step by step 1

F rom the church, cross the road and take the street in front of the church (follow the sign, for the prehistoric field of Cheslé).

F ollow the main road to the left.

A t the height of the cross, follow the path on the left that descends.

O n the way down, on the left, you'll see instructions for the Cheslé site that you can visit by following the markings of the Eisleck Trail (blue dotted route on the map).

J oin the banks of the River Ourthe at ‘Pré Balthazar'. Take the path on the top the left along the river. Further on, you may find the progression along the Ourthe difficult with the challenge of stumps and rocks in your path.

Join the route from ‘Le Cheslé'.

A t Vermoulin, leave the Ourthe and go up along the stream: steep climb.

F ollow a narrow path to the right: cross the stream and continue climbing.

R e-join the national road (main road) and Bérismenil.

The BX07 walk starts on the site ‘Au Cœur de L'Ardoise'. A touristic place where you can descend 25 metres underground to get an idea of the arduous job of ‘shale tailoring' or schist cutter. It's also a place to stop and taste the local beer ‘La Morépire' or a typical miners omlette straight from the pan. This walk follows the old route of the now completely disused Bertrix-Muno railway line. Follow the 'Voie des Pierres qui Parlent' (Path of the Talking Stones) before sinking into the forest to go up on the Ardennes plateau overlooking the valley of Aise. The difference in altitude is 241 metres and some sections remain very wild. On arrival you'll have a superb view of the 'Pont de la Blanche'.

Starting point and parking Au Cœur de l'Ardoise Rue du Babinay 1 – 6880 Bertrix

Step by step 1

T he sign with the route and characteristics of the walk is on the left side precisely at the entrance to the 'Cœur de l'Ardoise' site. Turn around in front of the ‘Pont de la Blanche' (bridge) and you will see the directional arrows towards the stony path straight away. You then pass under the old 163A railway line converted into a preRAVeL (walking route) and called 'La Voie des Pierres qui parlent' (Path of the Talking Stones) through a small tunnel and then enter a side located under that bridge. A t the crossroads, the uphill section ends. Continue straight as you follow a dirt road (which can be quite muddy in winter and/ or during periods of heavy rain) and which goes down through fir trees. Throughout the walk you'll find the BX07 beacons which will direct you as soon as there is a crossroads or a change of direction.

T he private ponds accentuate the beauty of the surrounding landscape. Follow the small stream (Goutelle) and go down the path through deciduous trees.

N ow you'll see the crossroads – a sign that the pre-RAVeL network is near. If you need a pause, there's a nice bench for a quick stop. A little further on the path becomes flat (or almost). The landscape opens out at this point with the epic view over the valley in all its beauty. Check out the giant blue and grey slate rocks on your right. Magnificent!

C limb the path until you find a small asphalt road. Follow that and continue to climb.

A t the new crossroads: follow the signs to the left. Straight on and descend slowly through the conifers.

W e are now at Km 4. The sign indicates to turn left to go down onto a less narrow path.

A fter 500 m, discover what remains of the remains of the old St Bernard hermitage.

C ontinue downhill and you will see the tunnel that passes under the pre-RAVel route. You leave it on your right while you take the path on the left of the tunnel and go up on the pre-RAVel route. You are now on the path called 'The Talking Stones', since all along, blocks of shale from the nearby exploitation are erected with explanatory panels in FR/NL. Continue for about 2 kms. Below you'll see the road linking Herbeumont to Mortehan. The crystalline stream that you hear is the ‘Aise'. Nearby, you can check out one of the many chapels dedicated to ‘Sainte-Barbe', Patron Saint of slate-makers, lining the roads that the hardy slate-makers once took each morning to walk to the shale mining pit.

What an enchanting journey. First you walk alongside the RAVeL route before entering the large ‘Gaumaise' forest. Crossing a beautiful forest again, you travel a magnificent path, crisscrossing a lost valley where you will discover the ‘Trou des Fées' at his heart. This astonishing mountain of sand is made up of several galleries which have been created by natural erosion. It is a legendary place where ‘Oriande' the fairy was said to have given ‘Maugis the Flamberge' an ancient sword and the Bayard horse (Ancient tale with ‘The Four Sons of Aymon').

According to legend, these strange cavities would protect the fairies endowed with magical powers. At the mythic ‘Trou des Fées', walkers and romantics stop to engrave the stones with the hope of dreams coming true.

Step by step 1

A t the starting point, go left and up the path. At the top of it, on your right, a sign will tell you about the Old Church and an old Merovingian cemetery.

A few metres further on, take the path on your left. Further down you'll enter the ‘Wimbe Valley' Nature Reserve. Please be careful and discreet.

F ollow the path to the road. Take this one on the left for a few metres. Take the first path on the left. Pay attention to the nature all around you, as you walk along a nature reserve managed by Natagora. Lovely surprises await.

A t the intersection with the ‘Gongon' stream go straight across the meadow to a small winding path in the forest. A little higher, take the path on your right to get to the viewing area. Discover the magnificent view: the ‘Wimbe valley' is right in front of you.

A t the end of this path, ‘Rue Théodore Olix' is situated on your right.

O nce you've taken in the sights turn back and continue on your climb. At the antenna, a small path tumbles down into the Scots pines and you will have bypassed the reserve. Arriving at the crossroads, cross the road to Beauraing and enter the forest on your right. You'll then find interesting information on forestry in Calestienne and a beautiful view of the village of Froidlieu.

A t the end of the path, turn left to go down to the village of Froidlieu and then turn left to find your starting point. Enjoy the heritage offered by the village of Froidlieu.

A few hundred metres further, turn left when you come across the path. You'll then cross a barrier (legally). Then cross the ‘Gongon' stream by the pontoon whilst admiring the view of Revogne, a picturesque village at the foot of a castle of medieval origin. This long path will also allow you to discover the flora and fauna in all seasons.

W hen you reach the crossroads at 'Rue de la Spinette' (street), turn left. Cross the ‘Rue de Wellin' (N40) and continue your way towards the village of Honnay.

Around the Castle From Celles, it is possible to walk to the Château de Vêves by following a very pleasant route, marked with a red triangle. From the village, you immediately climb towards the hideout, following in the footsteps of the ‘Chemins de Croix'. It also offers a view of Celles, classified amongst ‘The most beautiful villages of Wallonia'. The walk then follows the ridgeline before descending into the valley, at the foot of the castle. The route then joins the village of Boisseilles before taking a path covered with limestone leading to Celles. When you arrive in the village, it's a lovely stroll between the walls of the limestone houses and their flowered facades.

Step by step 1

F rom the Collegiate Church Saint Hadelin, take the stairs that lead you to the Hermitage Saint-Hadelin.

C ontinue for 1.1km on the ‘Rue de Furfooz. At the Y, turn right, ‘Rue de Hubermont' then first left (at about 200 metres).

A t the top, turn right into ‘Rue de L'Ermitage'. Continue on this asphalt path until you reach a small picnic area.

C ontinue towards Boiselles for 700 metres. Then when you reach two tree-lined alleys on your right, take the second alley.

W hen you arrive at the picnic table, take the road which climbs to your left, ‘Rue de Lavis'.

A fter 600 metres, at the crossroads, you take the road that goes down to your right, Chaussée Romaine.

A fter the driveway, continue straight through woods and countryside. After 400 metres, you'll arrive in ‘Rue Saint-Hadelin' which you follow on your right, until you are back at the starting point.

Y ou then arrive at a busy road, ‘Rue du Pirli', cross it with extreme caution, before taking ‘Rue de Furfooz' in front of you. Then you start the climb to the ‘Château de Vêves'.

This walk begins with the crossing the Meuse River, thanks to the ferryman there. On the other bank of the Meuse, the moored boats and the pretty park lend themselves to serenity… which you will have to leave to tackle this fortress forgotten in history... The steep path, also reminds us that the Meuse valley is steeped in history. Once you reach the top, the ridge offers you splendid panoramas. The pleasant return along the meadows on the banks of the Meuse ends with a refreshment in one of the Belle Époque hotels.

Step by step 1

U se the ferryman services to cross the Meuse from 1/05 to 30/09 and weekends 1/10 to 7/11. If the ferryman is not available, go to the other side via the lock located about 1km from your starting point. Shortly after the landing the barge on the other side, you cross the meadow and join the marked path, located on the right.

T he route follows a steep path where you climb straight up.

A t the top of the hill, the route turns left. On the right, the other path leads to Falmignoul (1 km).

F urther on, you pass by the panorama called 'Drapeau' which offers a striking view of the Meuse River, the village of Waulsort and its castle.

T he route ends at the ruins of Château Thierry, covered with vegetation.

Y ou start the descent where the stones are slippery.

A fter passing a barn, the path leads you to the banks of the Meuse. You then pass the barrier and turn left along the river. After crossing the long meadow, you get to the wooded park.
