Seiko’s origins are in the Ginza district of Tokyo, where Kintaro Hattori founded a watch and clock shop called ’Hattori Tokeiten’ in 1881. Kinaro decided that Seiko should be ”always on step ahead of the rest,” and within nine years, had developed his business from simple importation of clocks to their manufacture. His factory was called ’Seikosha,’ the ’house of precision.’

Seiko introduced Japan’s first diver’s watch, a mechanical self-winding watch that was water resistant to 150 meters. Thanks to its reliability, this watch became respected by adventurers worldwide including the Japanese Antarctic Research Expedition.

Seiko achieved the highest ever score in the Geneva Chronometer competition and is awarded the title of the best mechanical wrist chronometer.
Seiko became the first watch company to create an automatic chronograph with column wheel and vertical clutch systems. Even today, this is the gold standard in chronograph technology because of its durability and smooth button operation.
Seiko introduced the world’s first quartz watch, the Astron. It revolutinized the watch industry and quartz watches then took the market by storm. When Seiko opened the patents, other watchmakers used Seiko’s ideas and, even today, the majority of quartz watches still use the Seiko system.
This was a revolutionary diver’s watch that used a dual-structure case exterior with a titanium shell. It was the first diver’s watch in the world to use titanium. It offered the world’s highest level of water resistance and air tightness as well as an important increase in durability (corrosion resistance and abrasion resistance.) The exterior construction alone earned over 20 patents, and this watch was water resistant to a remarkable 600 meters.
Seiko introduced the world’s first quartz watch powered by the motion of the wearer. Now called Seiko Kinetic, this mechanism powers a quartz movement using electricity generated by the same kind of rotor used in self-winding watches. The rotor is capable of speeds of 100,000 rpm, more than five times faster than an F1 car.
The new Astron mas the world’s first GPS solar watch. This is a leading-edge watch that receives accurate time and time zone information from an atomic clock via GPS satellite and that is powered by solar energy alone.
