I

’m starting to think there’s no way a happy movie is going to be filmed in Oklahoma. During the past few months, I’ve visited Okie film sets with topics varying from child abuse, abortion and women’s rights in a steampunk future. The view isn’t much brighter if you take a step back and look at some of the biggest films shot here. “August: Osage County” had sunsets and incest. “Twister” had cows in tornadoes. “Rumblefish” had gangs. Weird Al’s “UHF” might be at the forefront for lighthearted fare. But even that starred Michael Richards (aka Cosmo Kramer) whose career took a turn. I’m oversimplifying things but bear with me. After visiting the set of “Great Plains,” which is a faith/family film

that wrapped in Moore, something hit me. We might not be a destination for feel-good entertainment but the mood on these productions seems overwhelmingly positive. Okie film sets are full of talented people, and it’s great to see people jump from set to set throughout the year. Meeting the creatives behind the camera is what makes me want to drive across the metro and beyond to see what’s cooking. I work to shine a light on these projects because I want people to know that it’s possible to make a living on movie sets. You might have to slightly alter your definition of “making a living,” but I’ve noticed a lot of features landing here. I hope to see that trend continue to grow. Subject matter might be dark in front of the camera, but that’s no reflection of what’s behind it. Also, I love visiting film sets because it’s fun seeing cinema get made without any of the stress. And sometimes you get to bother Dean Cain. It’s a win-win. Speaking of winners, I’d like to introduce everyone to Chris Turner. He wrote this issue’s cover story, and I welcome his energetic voice to LOOKatOKC. He wrote an engaging and informative account of what it was like for him to buy a house. Some day, when I have house money, I hope to have a similar story to tell my weird children. That’s all the time I have for this week. I’ve got to start packing my bags for Iceland. If you don’t see my photo here again it’s because I left and never came back. Or Bjork adopted me. See you guys next time.

4 tracks and a book worth reading into

W

hile this space is usually reserved for sharing new songs, I couldn’t resist throwing in a fantastic new book from journalist John Seabrook that plunges deep into the dark heart of the hit pop song. But first, new tracks! LOWLY — “FIRE” Founded in 1997 by Simon Raymonde and Robin Guthrie of the Cocteau Twins, the record label Bella Union’s made a strong reputation for itself by working with similarly dreamy-sounding bands like Beach House, Fleet Foxes and even Oklahoma City’s own folk-rock dudes Horse Thief. So when Bella Union introduces a new band you can expect something swooning and melodic, mellow and sweet. That turns out to be the case with Lowly, a Danish quintet the label recently took under its umbrella. This song, simply titled “Fire” is a lively one, bustling along on busy rhythms and curious textures.

MATT CARNEY All about creating a deeper relationship with music.

MODERN BASEBALL — “THE THRASH PARTICLE” There is some power in holding on to your bitterness. Philadelphia emo/rock outfit Modern Baseball proves it with a new song called “The Thrash Particle,” which briefly shows off a couple of measures’ worth of lite-metal guitar chops before the young band shifts up into high gear, sounding about as jaded as you can get with loudly-recorded multi-layered vocals. “The Thrash Particle” is utterly without polish. It isn’t got nothing in common structurally with anything aspiring for the radio. Instead it opts for directness; it’s frank to the point of confrontation. But the song still shows without telling — it shows a music scene small enough where songwriters date and get dumped for other songwriter, get their feelings hurt and go home to write bitter songs about it. FUZZ — “POLLINATE” Ty Segall’s something of a rock and roll classicist. With each of his many bands the 28-year-old Californian reinterprets sub-genres of rock from its 1960s and ‘70s heyday, often to raucous, powerful effect, and never quietly. Under his own name Segall’s most recently toyed with Marc Bolan’s starry glam rock and as Ty Segall Band he cranked the volume on the Stooges’ nascent, squalling punk up to 11. Fuzz, however, is Segall’s power trio — his primary outfit for mucking up Black Sabbath’s early-70s metal. At nearly 70 minutes, Fuzz’s second record

“II” is relentless. The low end stomps the riffs leave bruies and it’s never more than a minute or two away from a sudden, full-band gear shift into total annihilation. “Pollinate” is a steady, almost gleeful thrasher that finds time for a buzzing, out-of-control guiar solo somewhere in all the madness. CORB LUND — “SADR CITY” Both pro-war and protest songs have long histories in Americana music, from Creedence Clearwater Revival’s “Fortunate Son” hitting No. 3 on the Billboard Hot 100 during the Vietnam War to Toby Keith writing “Courtesy of the Red, White and Blue” in the wake of the September 11th attacks. While those songs each channel contrasting sentiments on wartime, neither considers the perspective of the soldier actually in battle. It’s fairly rare for songwriters to approach the subject of war at ground-level, which is why I was so pleasantly surprised to find this song, “Sadr City,” by Canadian cowboy Corb Lund, which he wrote after an actual conversation with a Middle East combat veteran. Lund sings in military jargon about getting ambushed and losing comrades in the suburb of Baghdad. It’s pretty harrowing stuff. “THE SONG MACHINE: INSIDE THE HIT FACTORY” BY JOHN SEABROOK Did you know that the co-writer on all five of the singles from Taylor Swift’s latest record was the same guy who wrote “…Baby One More Time” for Britney Spears and “I Want It That Way” for the Backstreet Boys way back in 1999? It’s true. And in the new book “The Song Machine: Inside the Hit Factory,” (on shelves now) music journalist John Seabrook takes the modern popular hit song apart and scrutinizes it as an archaeologist would an ancient civilization’s tool: examining every aspect of it in order to learn more about the people who designed it and whom it was meant to serve. Seabrook plays the historian, the producer, the social scientist and even the economist in “The Song Machine,” showing how the modern hit-making process has evolved over the decades, why these songs stick in your head and even the technological developments that spur studios to innovate on the sounds of the top 40. It’s a fantastic, provocative book that even goes as far to forecast a future for pop music based on all that data that streaming giants like Spotify have been collecting on our listening behaviors. And yep ... that includes all those Justin Bieber songs that you turn on a private session for.

DRINK & DRAW

Don’t get scared, it’s only drawings of a Chupacabra

DANIEL MOYER

elcome to the latest edition of our collaboration with Drink & Draw, the event that invites doodlers of all skill levels to gather on a weekly basis in Oklahoma City. In case you’re new to the party, here’s the rundown. Every Thursday night from 8 to 11, Drink & Draw is hosted at any of three locations in the metro. On the third, fourth and fifth Thursday of the month, the event is held at Tree & Leaf Clothing. And that’s where you’ll encounter the Drink & Draw Challenge. A random theme is selected, you’re kindly requested to draw on specially designed Drink & Draw paper and then the results are published once a month in LOOKatOKC. Our theme this month is Chupacabra.

Page 6

October 21 - November 3, 2015

It’s been a pleasure to see new faces join the festivities, and I hope to see more. The intentions of the event are more than simple. It’s an excuse to show off the talented artists in our city and invite anyone with a hint of artistic aspiration to join the fun. Again, Drink & Draw is an invitation to an open dialogue in the art community. One story wouldn’t do this event justice. Instead we are making this a monthly celebration of all things awesome. Pens, pencils and markers of all shapes and sizes are welcome. It’s just another reason to LOOKatOKC. The proof is sitting right in front of you. — Nathan Poppe, LOOKatOKC editor

t was so beautiful outside at this concert that really anyone could have been playing. I don’t mean that as a slight to the Irish singer-songwriter Andrew Hozier-Byrne. It was just that nice out. However, Hozier was exceptional. Fresh from his performance at Austin City Limits, he had no trouble throwing the jam-packed crowd into a frenzy. My expectations were based soley on his “Take Me to Church” hit single but he’s puts on a fun, bluesy show. Openers Little Green Cars, also a European import, shared Hozier’s skills for soothing, breezy rock music. It was completely worth being dog-tired the next morning. — Nathan Poppe, LOOKatOKC editor and photographer

t’s helpful to have stars shining on set when so much is dim. On a misty October evening, dozens of cast and crew members zipped through the streets of downtown Guthrie to shoot “Gosnell,” a dramatic feature exploring the crimes of Kermit Gosnell. The jailed doctor ran a shoddy abortion clinic in Philadelphia and was found guilty of killing babies who were born alive in his clinic. The film’s bold tagline identifies Gosnell as “America’s biggest serial killer.” There aren’t exact numbers on the amount of late-term abortions Gosnell performed, but his three decades of practice isn’t reassuring. Neither is the film’s weighty, controversial subject matter, but the Oklahoman-filled crew was in good spirits throughout the half-day shoot Oct. 5. Steps away from Guthrie’s Pollard Theatre, a handful of exterior scenes were scheduled for the evening, including a raid into Gosnell’s clinic. The streets were crowded with pro-

duction trucks packed full of equipment and camera gear. A couple sat on a park bench and watched the commotion. You could easily walk onto the open set without permission. The movie’s lead, Dean Cain (“Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman”), stood against a black unmarked police car. In between takes, he talked about tackling the role of James Wood, the detective who led Gosnell’s investigation. The two haven’t met before, but Cain admires his real-life counterpart’s pursuit of justice. “He’s a great character to play,” he said. “… I hope I portray him well. He’s a little bit volatile. He’s funny. He cares about what he’s doing. He’ll see it through to the end. It’s a character I can identify with.” It shouldn’t come as a stretch for Cain, 49, to play the hero; he still identifies with his Superman acting roots and recently joined the cast of CBS “Supergirl.” Cain’s also no stranger to Oklahoma. He’s vis-

ited Tulsa on a handful of occasions and once attended a charity event for the Oklahoma City bombing. The actor spent weeks in Guthrie and Oklahoma City before shooting in Oklahoma wrapped on Oct. 16. “We’re actually going to shoot this,” Cain said in a hurry. “We’re going to shoot right down the barrel. They’re coming right this way, boss.” I hopped out of the way as Cain joined his partner (Alfonso Rachel) and made an arrest. I rejoined Cain and he’s quick with a joke and or smile. “Gosnell” is a movie about a monster, but that didn’t deflate Cain’s interest or candor. “It’s not always a case of sitting back and choosing whatever piece of work you want to do,” Cain said. “You’re an actor. Sometimes you take a job because it’s a job. You’re free, and it’s offered. … That doesn’t mean you have to necessarily agree with the subject matter or your character’s perspective.” WHY OKLAHOMA? As the crew broke for lunch, producer Phelim McAleer gave me free rein to explore the wellequipped set which was dressed to look like Philadelphia. His film raised an astounding $2.3 million through Indiegogo. That’s a record for the crowdfunding website. So how did McAleer’s movie wind up in Guthrie? “It’s basically about the crew and variety of locations,” McAleer said in an email. “Oklahoma has been smart in training crew up and focusing on developing skills. The people here are

LOOKATOKC.COM

top tier. Oklahoma has so many different places and locations that we can make a complete movie without moving around too much.” McAleer also cited Oklahoma’s film enhancement rebate. The state provides rebates to filmmakers amounting to $1 for every $3 dollars they spend on movie productions in Oklahoma, up to a total of $5 million. “The incentive is important — very important — but the people are more important,” McAleer said. “Rebates are good, but they are irrelevant unless accompanied by talented people.” John Sullivan is executive producing “Gosnell.” He co-directed Dinesh D’Souza’s documentary films “America,” which was shot throughout Oklahoma and “2016: Obama’s America.” Andrew Klavan wrote “Gosnell.” He’s best known for writing the novel “True Crime,” which was turned into a Clint Eastwood film. McAleer said “Gosnell” should be completed in early 2016 and will aim for a theatrical release. It’ll be released after the Gosnell documentary “3801 Lancaster: American Tragedy” gets released Nov. 10. EDUCATIONAL OPPORTUNITY As the crew returned from lunch, several police vehicles surrounded the streets of Guthrie to mimic when Gosnell’s clinic was raided in 2010. The actual raid led to a grand jury report that uncovered “the clinic reeked of animal urine, courtesy of the cats that were allowed to roam (and defecate) freely.”

Most gruesome of all, fetal remains were found scattered throughout the clinic in jars, bags and plastic jugs. When Gosnell’s trial began in 2013, it received light coverage from national media outlets. Even the Washington Post admitted a belated effort to cover the trial. So if the country didn’t jump on the story in 2013, what makes the filmmakers think an audience will now? Director Nick Searcy doesn’t know for sure, but he feels like he’s telling a unique and dark story. The actor(“Moneyball,” “Castaway”)-turned-director has learned a lot from shooting “Gosnell.” “Abortion is something everyone seems to have an opinion about but nobody seems to know much about,” Searcy said. “When I read the script, there was so much information in it that I didn’t know and that I wasn’t aware of. … I think that’s going to be helpful to anyone, no matter which side of the issue they are on.” Searcy was quick to say “Gosnell” wasn’t a horror film. He compared it to a long episode of “Law & Order.” It’s crime, detection and trial, he said. “What I wanted to do from the beginning with this story is tell the truth about what happened as closely as we could do while still making it a dramatically effective story,” Searcy said. “I didn’t make up anything. I didn’t want to convince anyone of anything. I want to tell the story and let people decide about it what they want.” — Nathan Poppe, LOOKatOKC Editor

movie review

BRIDGE OF SPIES

2:15 | PG-13 | Starring: Tom Hanks, Mark Rylance, Scott Shepherd, Amy Ryan and Sebastian Koch. (Some violence and brief strong language)

‘Spies’ is a refresher course in history

Y

ou don’t need a history book, or even this flick, to realize the U.S. has beef with Russia. Just flip on a TV, watch “Rocky IV” or listen to a talk radio station in the morning. History sure has a way of repeating itself. “Bridge of Spies” jumps into a time machine and drives all the way back to the Cold War era. A seasoned director (Steven Spielberg), your third favorite actor (Tom Hanks) and screenwriting gurus (the Coen Brothers) drive this tension-filled prestige project and warmly re-imagine the true story of insurance lawyer turned geopolitical Atticus Finch impersonator James B. Donovan (Hanks). Funny side note, Spielberg revealed Gregory Peck had wanted to tackle the role back in 1965. In two acts, Donovan aims to defend an

Page 14

October 21 - November 3, 2015

alleged Soviet spy named Rudolph Abel (Mark Rylance) and then makes a deadly business trip to Berlin to swap Abel for an American POW and a very lost college student. This isn’t a grocery though and two for one specials aren’t easy to find. On paper, the film could easily seem like a cold bore. I’m almost positive that’s why the Coens were brought in to punch up the story. Their comedic timing and subtle character quirks are sprinkled throughout the film. I’m sure they’re responsible for upping the movie’s pulse from dry history lecture to Oscar hopeful. However, the film’s lifeblood relies almost completely on Hanks. He devours his role and plays a guy who pays dearly for unflinchingly delivering his brand of justice. He doesn’t take the easy way

out. Ever. It’s the sort of underdog story I’m sure Spielberg loved telling. I’m glad for the world history refresher and was blatantly unaware of Donovan’s trials and tribulations before seeing “Bridge of Spies.” Spielberg also stamps the film with a big serving of humanity. For an era that’s so well known for division, “Bridge of Spies” acts as a hopeful reminder that perhaps cooler heads will prevail and treating others like we want to be treated works outside of elementary school, too. There’s a warm heart to this Cold War drama. If you like history served with a side of ethics then consider “Bridge of Spies” a buffet. — Nathan Poppe, LOOKatOKC editor

ince our last Turning the Table on Hunger coverage, two local chefs have volunteered their considerable talents to the kitchen at the WestTown day shelter, 1724 N Virginia Ave. Chef Melissa Aust brought a full crew from Stella Modern Italian, 1201 N Walker Ave., including owner Lori Tyler, to serve Turkey and Pepperoni Risotto to about 300 folks seeking shelter at WestTown. Another day, chef Vuong Nguyen of Bonjour showed up in the wee hours of the morning to serve a hot meal to the 200 or so there for breakfast. Thanks to the leadership of Oklahoma City’s chefs, volunteerism has increased, but the need for more has not diminished, say officials with The Homeless Alliance. As the holiday season nears, the need for volunteers will only increase. I can assure you, on behalf of the chefs who have volunteered, the benefits of volunteerism can’t be purchased and won’t be found wrapped in pretty paper under a lighted tree. While peace on earth takes a collective effort, it’s up to each individual to contribute the good will toward mankind that adds up to world peace in the long run. Self-sacrifice is a common denominator in the equation for spiritual enrichment, regardless of the spiritual journey you’ve chosen. Kitchen manager Johnny Wofford’s calendar has plenty of vacancies to fill, which might just fill a spiritual void of your own. And Wofford’s kitchen has extra need right now as he just began a well-earned two-week vacation. His right-hand man, Delbert Briggs, is plenty capable, but Wofford’s daily contributions might take the effort of three hard-working people to fill. While your presence is desperately needed at the day shelter, there are plenty of other ways to contribute. Wofford and Briggs would love to serve their guests a proper holiday feast, so frozen turkeys and hams would be greatly appreciated. Steady supplies of staples including meats, fresh produce, bread, coffee beans and sugar are always welcome. The breakfast service was a reminder that a pancake gun would be greatly appreciated, as would a kitchen scale with capacity up to 5 pounds, bread knives, insulated service carts, parchment paper and cookbooks specializing in institutional service. The shelter also needs bath towels. Last year, the shelter provided 19,574 showers, so the need for towels — new or used, just clean — is perpetual. key-pepperoni risotto plus a fresh salad with produce donated by Freshpoint and chocolate chip bread pudding. They even got some table service from Tyler, who picked up plates and engaged the diners like a true hospitality professional. Aust, who joined Stella in 2011 and became executive chef last year, ran a tight ship during her turn and was responsible for a lot of smiles from diners. Her energy and organization were only exceeded by her humility. “Great staff to work with here,” she said. “It’s really important work they do here, and all of us at Stella were honored to be a part of it.” Meanwhile, when Bonjour chef Nguyen shows up to make breakfast, that’s automatically going to be the best part of the day for anyone who comes across it. He’s been serving breakfast and lunch at Bonjour, 3705 W Memorial Road, Suite 707, for about a year, and the lines out the door for it are becoming common. The Homeless Alliance’s Haley Phelps said Vuong’s breakfast was special for one client in particular who has been down on his luck and

Page 18

working hard,— with limited success — to get things together so he could get into housing. Phelps said the man came in that morning downtrodden, but when he saw Nguyen’s amazing breakfast, his day turned around thanks to the proof people cared about his well-being. Imagine how many days could be turned around if the volunteer calendar had a waiting list. The United Way is assisting The Homeless Alliance in organizing its volunteer efforts. To sign up, go online to www.homelessalliance.org or www. volunteercentraloklahoma.org. NEW FOOD TRUCK TO HELP On June 17, a new social action community called Made Possible took to social media looking for input on how best to serve Oklahoma people, the planet and the pursuit of happiness. The question #WhatIfOKC was posed, and nearly 500 of ideas were collected. The result was a campaign to create the Food For All food truck. A Good Egg Dining Group, Whole Foods Market and First National Bank of

Oklahoma have teamed up to collaborate with Oklahomans in turning this idea into reality. The Food For All truck would provide lifetime funding support with 100 percent of net proceeds going directly to the Regional Food Bank of Oklahoma to serve nutritious meals to at-risk children every month. Part of the program also includes education on the value and importance of nutrition and balanced eating through cooking demonstrations, volunteerism and distributed materials. A Good Egg Dining would operate the truck from high-quality, sustainable ingredients from Whole Foods Market. First National Bank of Oklahoma will purchase the truck shell, and A Good Egg Dining Group and Whole Foods Market Oklahoma will provide the culinary creations, all in the name of fighting hunger. Made Possible is seeking funds to trigger this beacon of hope. All it will take is 7,500 Oklahomans giving $5 each to put this Food For All truck on the streets of Oklahoma City. ROASTED CHICKEN RISOTTO 1 tablespoon fresh garlic, peeled and minced 1/2 cup onion, small diced 1 teaspoon hot red pepper flakes (optional) 1 teaspoon kosher salt 1/2 teaspoon pepper 2 cups Arborio rice 4 tablespoon olive oil 1 cup white wine (optional) 8 cups of hot chicken stock 1 pound Roma tomatoes, roasted and pureed 2 cups Parmesan cheese 3 cups roasted chicken, diced 3 tablespoons chopped parsley Saute the garlic, onion, pepper flakes, rice, salt and pepper in the olive oil over medium heat until the

garlic starts to caramelize. Reduce heat to low. If using the white wine, add it to the rice and deglaze, otherwise start adding the chicken stock, 2 cups at a time, while constantly stirring the rice. Allow each batch of stock to absorb into the rice before adding more. After 6 cups of stock have been added, test the rice for doneness. Rice should be al dente, without any crunch in the center. Continue adding the remaining stock if needed. When rice is fully cooked, add tomato puree, cheese, chicken and parsley and incorporate until the chicken is hot. — Recipe by Chef Melissa Aust

ICHOLS HILLS — Ending years of rumors, Trader Joe’s has confirmed it will open a store in Nichols Hills. The California specialty grocer has signed a lease for a new location in Nichols Hills Plaza at 6409 Avondale Drive. The new store will be about 10,000 square feet and is expected to open in the second half of 2016. Nichols Hills Mayor Peter Hoffman praised Nichols Hills Plaza owner WP Glimcher, as well as city staff, for helping bring the new retailer to the city. “This is one of the most important things to happen to our community in a long time. ... We can’t wait to shop at Trader Joe’s,” Hoffman said. “It says a lot about our city and this part of the country that they would choose to locate here when they have so many other options.” Typical Trader Joe’s locations range from about 10,000 square feet to 15,000 square

feet, so the Nichols Hills store will be right in line with that, said Alison Mochizuki, spokeswoman for the Monrovia, Calif.-based company. The store will carry about 80 percent Trader Joe’s private label products, Mochizuki said. Trader Joe’s announced this spring its first Oklahoma store in Tulsa’s Brookside neighborhood will be open by year’s end. The grocer has long been rumored to have a Nichols Hills location in the works, but hasn’t confirmed its plans until now. The storefront at Nichols Hills Plaza that Trader Joe’s will inhabit has been vacant since 2011, when the 122-year-old, locally owned Crescent Market closed its doors. Trader Joe’s carries domestic and imported foods and beverages, including artisan breads. — Brianna Bailey, for LOOKatOKC

Landmark downtown tire shop sold, redevelopment on the way

ne of the city’s oldest tire shops sold this month to a group of downtown investors who plan to redevelop the property into a mix of offices and retail anchored by a Mexican restaurant owned by the Good Egg Dining Group. Swanson’s Tire Co. has been in business since 1909, and moved to its present location at NW 9 and Hudson Avenue in 1942. The Swanson family sold the business to longtime employee Mike Crouse in 2002 at a time when the surrounding neighborhood was in such decline that St. Anthony Hospital was contemplating abandoning its nearby historic home. “The corner of 9th and Hudson will transform into a destination spot in Midtown,” said Jeff Johnson, lead developer and buyer. “The area has a lot of momentum, and this will be a great addition to an already thriving community.”

The buyers are a who’s who in the downtown development community. Johnson secured a purchase contract and teamed up with Andy Burnett, his partner in redeveloping the Mideke Building in Bricktown. The pair approached David Wanzer, Ben Sellers and Jonathan Dodson, whose projects include the Tower Theater on NW 23 in Uptown. “We’re all friends, and they had great ideas,” Johnson said. “They are urbanite guys who love this feel. It’s not just about the project but how it can give back to the community and how it might fit.” OFFICE AND RETAIL PLANS Two more emerging players in downtown development, Rohan Gupta and Aman Aggarwal — whose projects include redevelopment of the former Sycamore Square into The Haven — were brought on board to do poten-

tial office and retail on the block. Keith Paul, owner of the Good Egg Dining Group, was key to the deal, Johnson said. “What’s cool about this property is it had a big building built on the north side, then the tire center, and as different pieces were built, they created a courtyard area in the center,” Johnson said. “We kept pulling our hair out trying to figure out how to use it. We came out with idea of doing Keith Paul’s restaurant, where he will use the courtyard and turn it into a hacienda.” Paul said the restaurant will be on the corner of NW 9 and Hudson, with a third of the seating, about 2,000 square feet, in the courtyard and the remaining 5,000 square feet inside what is the main garage and tire shop. “We’ve had a Mexican concept in our back pocket for several years,” Paul said. “We were going to do one before we did Republic; did Republic instead. We casually looked for the right location. But when we visited with Jeff and Andy, and I’ve been taking my car there, and when I was told I could be involved in the ownership, this was a no-brainer.” The property adjoins an already successful The R&J Lounge and Supper Club and is surrounded by a growing mix of housing, retail, restaurants and entertainment venues. Paul said he is looking at heaters and coolers, and a mix of landscaping to allow the hacienda to remain open 300 days a year.

LOOKATOKC.COM

Paul’s Good Egg Dining Group owns nine restaurants, most in the urban core. But the restaurant at Swanson’s Tire would be his first in Midtown. “It’s a proven area, we live close, and we have restaurants within a few blocks of there,” Paul said. “We couldn’t be happier to have this spot in Midtown.” HISTORY WILL BE HONORED Johnson said the partners are working with architect Jeremy Gardener and their plans include incorporating the Swanson’s Tire history, including some of the signage. The facade changed several times over the decades, including a modernization done by Charles Swanson’s widow, Mary Helen Swanson, after she assumed control in the late 1980s. Crouse was unavailable for comment, but Johnson praised the owner for his patience through the sale negotiations. “He was very good to work with,” Johnson said. “These deals are challenging. And the owners don’t always know all that these things involve. It takes a lot of work to make it happen.” — Steve Lackmeyer, for LOOKatOKC

T

he Oklahoma City Council voted Oct. 13 to build the $287 million MAPS 3 convention center south of Chesapeake Energy Arena. The vote ends a three-month analysis of competing downtown sites and authorizes the city manager to begin buying property. The city could have control of the six square blocks planned for the convention center in six to nine months, said Cathy O’Connor, executive director of the Urban Renewal Authority and president and chief executive officer of the Alliance for Economic Development of Oklahoma City. Acquiring property will exceed the $13 million originally set aside for convention center land but council members were determined to stay within the project’s overall budget, she said. “Can they build the convention center and get it within the total budget for the project? I think that’s still a possibility,” said O’Connor, who is leading land acquisition efforts. The convention center has the largest budget of the eight MAPS 3 projects. It will be financed by the 1-cent MAPS 3 sales tax approved by voters

in December 2009. The latest timeline shows construction beginning in spring 2017, with the building opening late in 2019. The site includes an OG&E electrical substation that will have to be moved at an estimated cost of $30 million. O’Connor said some of that expense could be offset by building above-ground. Designs drawn up for the council’s original preferred site, west of Chesapeake Energy Arena, included 200,000-square-feet of underground exhibit halls. Staying above-ground will save $17 million to $20 million in construction costs, O’Connor said. Exhibit hall space could also be reduced to stay within budget, she said. The council voted to build south of the arena rather than to the west, on land once occupied by a Ford auto dealership. — William Crum, for LOOKatOKC

OCTOBER 25 • 6:30 P.M. I’m used to visiting the Power House on the weekends and getting greeted with insane dance parties and lots of loud noises. However, catching a free tribute show at the Power House is a different story. Organizer Jerrod Beck invites more than a dozen musicians to share and swap songs from the back

catalogs of yesteryear. It’s a listening room experience and the perfect place to end the weekend with a slow burn. Show up early. Grab a seat. Oh, and let’s not forget to take it extra easy for J.J. Cale, the night’s featured artist. — Nathan Poppe, LOOKatOKC editor

SUN When the iconic VZD’s Restaurant reopened under new management, the new owners planned to focus most of their attention on the neighborhood restaurant side of the concept rather than the live music that built a cult following. “We’re still going to have live music,” owner and chef Eric Smith told Dave Cathey. “Just not as much of it. We’re thinking bigger shows, just fewer of them.”

By all accounts, the strategy is working with a streamlined menu of vintage, seared burgers, Chicago-style hot dogs, vegan specialties and VZD’s own nachos. “Bobby Nelson (chief financial officer of Sprinkles Cupcakes) was in here while we were working on the different recipes and was giving me plenty of guidance on the nachos,” Smith joked. “I think we’re gonna call the nachos the Bobby Nelson Nachos the next time we print menus.”

VZD’s also serves brunch on Saturday and Sunday. Along with the regular menu, guests can choose from simple breakfast selections including pancakes, oatmeal, eggs and bacon. Smith also does a Peanut Butter and Grilled Banana French toast and Soyrizo Biscuits and Gravy. Brunch drinks include a Prosecco Mimosa and Bloody Mary. —Dave Cathey, for LOOKatOKC

OKC DEAD | DOWNTOWN

THROUGH OCTOBER 31 • 7 P.M. Their faces horribly mangled and their torn clothes smeared with blood, three zombies shamble through an intersection at Robinson and Main, snarling as they approached the nearest bystander. Suddenly, a heroic figure, dressed in a utility vest and wielding a pair of pistols, dashes at the monsters, aiming for their scarred faces as he opens fire — with foam darts. The zombie apocalypse has arrived in downtown Oklahoma City, and the Civic Center Music Hall looks to be ground zero for the infection, as Reduxion Theatre Company presents its new live production “OKC Dead,” described as

an immersive “zombie survival experience.” Based on the 2014 Washington, D.C., independent stage hit “DC Dead,” “OKC Dead” will invite teams of as many as eight theatergoers to enter every 20 minutes starting at 7 p.m. Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays through Oct. 31. Safety goggles and a guide will be provided as teams escape zombies, solve puzzles and race to save the city. Shows, or “missions,” are about 45 minutes long, and they are designed for people ages 14 and older.
