NATHAN POPPE LOOKatOKC EDITOR NPOPPE@OKLAHOMAN.COM

I

’m struggling this week. After 8 days in Iceland, I returned to Oklahoma City and was smacked a heaping dose of reality. It was a memorable trip. I fell asleep on a mountain to the sounds of a waterfall surrounded by glaciers. I watched a 14-member, all-girl Icelandic hip-hop group perform in a language I don’t understand. I even danced with the Northern Lights. A lot of my time was spent at Iceland Airwaves, which is an incredible and cold music festival. The Flaming Lips are frequent headliners and have fans all over the place. OKC-based band Horse Thief

from the editor played last year, and I confirm people still remember seeing them. There weren’t any Okies performing this year, but I did manage to catch Mercury Rev, which features former Lips member Jonathan Donahue. Sadly, the dream trip couldn’t last forever, but I’m happy to return in time for our annual LICKatOKC issue. Even with the jet lag. If you’re unaware, the pet-centric issue focuses on dogs and cats from the metro. It started when I made a terrible pun in a meeting and then got a ton of help to make it happen. It’s how 95 percent of my ideas happen. The other 5 percent end up as Instagram posts that get less than 10 likes. I don’t actually own a pet myself but I’m able to live vicariously through this issue. It’s really the way to do it. I get to hang out with everyone’s pets without actually smelling any of them or getting dog hair on my pants. Also, I’m allergic to cats. I own two ceramic ones but that’s about as close to owning a cat as I’ll ever get. But I’m more than glad to pick some of the most adorable pets in OKC. I’m such a fan of your four-legged friends that I won’t give you trouble if you line your pets’ cages with this issue. You’re welcome. Don’t forget you can use #LICKatOKC all year long if you’d like to make it in next year. All cats and dogs are welcome. I wouldn’t mind seeing more hamsters, lizards and hedgehogs in 2016. Make a it happen, OKC. If they’ve got a tongue then they’re welcome in LICKatOKC.

My spirit animal isn’t a dog or cat. It’s a squirrel riding a hog. [PHOTO BY NATHAN POPPE, FOR LOOKATOKC]

Balance out your 2015 album lists with some fresh songs their first record since 2005, and little in their sound and songwriting’s changed: they’re still pairing more modern anxieties with old-timey Appalachian-style country and bluegrass. Catherine Irwin and Janet Beveridge’s vocals still do amazing things together too, evoking a scary, apocalyptic scene here at the end of this song, “The Asp and the Albatross.”

I

t’s November, y’all. Time to get started sketching out those album-of-the-year lists. New tunes!

MATT CARNEY All about creating a deeper relationship with music.

MARK MCGUIRE — “BEYOND BELIEF” Not to be confused with the former baseball slugger, Mark McGuire is a musician living in Los Angeles, where for the last two years he’s been self-recording his latest record of lush, proggy rock music “Beyond Belief.” McGuire recently told the online publication Thump that the album is an accompaniment to a sci-fi story written by his fiancée, about a futuristic human race sharing in a collective consciousness more powerful than the individual’s imagination. Naturally, there are lots of noodly guitar solos. But “Beyond Belief” proves much more satisfying than a whole records’ worth of aimless jamming. Often leaving the rhythms relatively quiet, McGuire’s front-loaded this record down with lush, gorgeous layers of guitars, pianos and synthesizers. And just as you let your

FRANKIE COSMOS — “YOUNG” Every day the tools needed to record and distribute music get less expensive, which is perhaps nowhere more evident than the Bandcamp page of the New York City band Frankie Cosmos, which boasts more than 40 albums and EPs and looks less like a traditional recording artists’ discography and more like the online journal of a teenager. In fact, you get the sense that the band’s songwriter Greta Kline, has been using the space for just that, by parsing through the homemade album covers, listening to a self-recorded song here and there and reading some of the very specific titles like “skinned elbow = now you’re cool” and “Ingrid you’ve done it again.” Kline’s wry wit made Frankie Cosmos’s first studio album a standout last year and now the band’s back with a new song, simply titled “Young,” that packs a lot into just two minutes. Have a listen. FREAKWATER — “THE ASP AND THE ALBATROSS” Have you ever bought an album just because the cover art caught your eye? A couple of years ago I first heard the Kentucky alt-country band Freakwater that way, when a copy of the band’s third album, 1993’s Feels Like the Third Time practically leapt out of the record bin. In southern gothic style, the cover’s got a black-and-white photo of a woman with the most dour expression, her hair curling down off to the side of her face like a cyclone, and behind her; a classic wide-body American station wagon, all rimmed with a bold red framing. I had no idea what Freakwater sounded like but I had to find out. Now the band’s back, announcing

FLOATING POINTS — “ELAENIA” After several years of releasing singles and EPs, it’s come time for a proper full-length debut. Under the pseudonym Floating Points, England’s Sam Shepherd has developed a unique style of jazz-timed dance music that’s much slower and less aggressive than what you’re likely to hear at loud, very macho raving club dance party. No big whumping bass here. Instead, Floating Point’s debut record “Elaenia” finds its fun in quirky repetitions, weaving and interlocking skittery drum patterns with warm synthesizer notes so closely that you can’t tell the instruments apart. Shepherd’s also successful here creating different moods for the listener, everything from a warm ambience of relaxation to a quickly increasing paranoia on this track titled “Peroration Six,” which cuts off so abruptly as to leave the listener confused and unsettled. CONNAN MOCKASIN AND DEVONTE HYNES — “FEELIN’ LOVELY” New Zealander Connan Mockasin and Brit Devonte Hynes —who plays under the pseudonym Blood Orange— each have a little bit of Prince in them. Their debt to the Purple One is on display in this new collaborative song titled “Feelin’ Lovely,” where Mockasin and Hynes each affect very delicate and alluring but flexible vocal deliveries that mingle together over a slinky groove.

elcome to the latest edition of our collaboration with Drink & Draw, the event that invites doodlers of all skill levels to gather on a weekly basis in Oklahoma City. In case you’re new to the party, here’s the rundown. Every Thursday night from 8 to 11, Drink & Draw is hosted at any of three locations in the metro. On the third, fourth and fifth Thursday of the month, the event is held at Tree & Leaf Clothing. And that’s where you’ll encounter the Drink & Draw Challenge. A random theme is selected, you’re kindly requested to draw on specially designed Drink & Draw paper and then the results are published once a month in LOOKatOKC. Our theme this month features some of our favorite doodles from

2015. It’s the best of the best. It’s been a pleasure to see new faces join the festivities, and I hope to see more. The intentions of the event are more than simple. It’s an excuse to show off the talented artists in our city and invite anyone with a hint of artistic aspiration to join the fun. Again, Drink & Draw is an invitation to an open dialogue in the art community. One story wouldn’t do this event justice. Instead we are making this a monthly celebration of all things awesome. Pens, pencils and markers of all shapes and sizes are welcome. It’s just another reason to LOOKatOKC. The proof is sitting right in front of you. — Nathan Poppe, LOOKatOKC editor

ilming has begun in central Oklahoma for the screen adaptation of “The Scent of Rain and Lightning,” based on the book by Nancy Pickard, starring Maika Monroe, Maggie Grace and Brad Carter. Produced by Casey Twenter, Jeff Robison and Jeff Johnson of No Coast Entertainment, Kevin Waller of Gerson Productions, Michael Davis, Maggie Grace and executive producers Dan Koetting and Carolyn Paul, the film focuses on a young woman who learns her parents’ killer has recently been released from jail, forcing her to revisit old wounds, realizing the destructive power of hate

and the true cost of family secrets. Shooting on the film will take place in Guthrie and Okarche. New additions to the cast include Logan Miller, who recently appeared in “The Stanford Prison Experiment” and will star in “Scouts Guide to the Zombie Apocalypse”; Mark Webber, from the films “Scott Pilgrim vs. the World” and “Laggies”; Will Patton, star of “Remember the Titans” and the TNT series “Falling Skies”; Bonnie Bedelia, of “Die Hard” fame and the NBC drama series “Parenthood”; Justin Chatwin, who rose to fame playing the son of Tom Cruise in Steven Spielberg’s “The War of the Worlds” and who currently stars in Showtime’s “Shameless”; and Aaron Poole, who

appeared in “The Samaritan.” As producers and screenwriters, Robison and Twenter are best known for “Rudderless, the 2014 Sundance Film Festival closing night feature that was sold to Paramount and Samuel Goldwyn Co. for theatrical and home distribution. “The Scent of Rain and Lightning” is directed by Blake Robbins, a 20-year acting veteran whose first directorial effort, “The Sublime and Beautiful,” debuted at the Slamdance Film Festival. The new film takes advantage of Oklahoma’s Film Enhancement Rebate, which offers a cash rebate of 35 to 37 percent on qualifying Oklahoma expenditures to film and television productions filming in the state.

By Nathan Poppe B et your earplugs ready. It’s going to get loud in Norman when Cleveland, Ohio-based rock act Cloud Nothings headlines the main stage on the final evening of the free, three-day Norman Music Festival 9, which runs April 21-23 N throughout the streets of downtown Norman. t Cloud Nothings frontman Dylan Baldi shared his excitement for the 2016 headlining slot via email. He noted m festivals in the Midwest tend to have a more easygoing f v vibe than those on the coasts, and he has “high hopes f Norman as a city and for the festival as a whole.” for

G Norman Music Festival 9 logo.

“I’ve embarrassed myself by doing stupid things in front of large crowds of people so many times in my life,” Baldi said. “Playing music is one thing I’m actually good at, so there is no nervousness when it comes to playing music for people. It’s just fun, and I feel lucky and excited that our first show in Oklahoma can be on as big of a stage as the Norman Music Festival.” Joining Cloud Nothings on the main stage will be chillwavers Small Black, alt hip-hop act Open Mic Eagle, muppet rocker Nobunny, Oklahoma-native punk duo Skating Polly, experimental rock act Woozy and heavy Oklahoma City rockers Traindodge.

TALENT SHOWCASE The festival’s open call for artists has opened as well. This is the chance for Oklahoma-based and regional acts to fill out the festival’s lineup. Bands can apply online until Dec. 20. In 2015, NMF8 attracted roughly 80,000 patrons, 300 bands and raised an estimated $5.7 million in revenue for the city of Norman. Quentin Bomgardner, chairman of the board for the nonprofit Norman Music Alliance and NMF9 organizer, is expecting similar results in 2016. “As far as attendance goes, we guardedly expect the same size,” Bomgardner said. “If it’s sunny and beautiful, we’d expect 80,000.” Bomgardner noted NMF9 had a bigger talent budget for 2016 and hopes to see headliner acts not just on main stages but throughout the festival. Planning for NMF9 started a month after the 2015 festival. “We have a really solid talent team,” Bomgardner said. “Josh Boydston had an interest in starting earlier.” Festival organizer Boydston aimed to make NMF9 different from past years. He said he wanted to get back to having a more balanced spread of interesting touring bands throughout the day on the main stage while also offering up something that goes a little against the grain of the dance-oriented indie rock and pop top headliners that have capped off the stage in recent years. “This will be a new experience,” Boydston said. “And I like to think it will be a great one. ... We are proud of what we’ve accomplished with the main stage so far, but we’ll have plenty more incredible touring and local artists filling up our other outdoor and indoor stages with announcements coming down the line. We’re determined to make this the best Norman Music Festival yet.”

CAREER OPPORTUNITY Shortly after revealing the headliner information, the Norman Music Alliance shared that it’s seeking a part-time executive director. A volunteer has been managing the festival since its inception. The position would involve growing the festival as a non-profit and lead fundraising. hen Whitney McClendon was working as a research manager of epidemiology at MD Anderson Cancer Center, she harbored a secret: She loved to cook and loved to eat gourmet food. So, as she mulled ideas for using her knowledge and experience to affect people’s everyday lives, food service presented a natural stage from which to show people how they could protect their health without sacrificing deliciousness from their diets. But as much as McClendon loved to cook, she knew she needed an ace in the kitchen to fully realize her dream. Enter Beth Lyon, the smile-happy Coach House Apprenticeship graduate behind the original menu at Kitchen No. 324 and most recently turning grilled cheese sandwiches and corn dogs into a culinary art at The Mule and Anchor Down. “I did a nationwide search,” McClendon said. “And I must’ve considered 450 applications and was almost ready to make a final decision when a friend

told me there was one more person they thought I ought to meet.” The courtesy interview turned into a job change for Lyon, who now oversees culinary operations for Provision Kitchen, 6443 Avondale Drive in Nichols Hills. Unlike the restaurants where she’s trained, Provision Kitchen entails more batch-cooking, Lyon said. “I like to think of it as a catering kitchen,” she said. “Preparing a party for 200 every couple of days.” The other challenge for Lyon is maintaining McClendon’s strict guidelines for good health while maintaining gustatory excellence. Provision Kitchen’s farm near Arcadia makes the task easier. Working with premiLOOKATOKC.COM

um ingredients, Lyon can focus on creating perfectly portioned, nutritionally balanced, nutrient-rich meals for takeaway. The farm also affords Lyon the opportunity to offer a seasonal rotation of meals and ingredients. Each entree or family meal is packaged in containers safe for either standard or microwave ovens and stamped with full nutritional content. The farm also provides Provision Kitchen with a stunning array of ingredients for the walk-through salad counter. By presenting food rich in nutritional value and flavor, McClendon is able to prove her theory that local, organic vegetables and animal products aren’t luxuries but essentials. She hopes Provision Kitchen will be a

springboard for Oklahoma City residents to better educate themselves about what they consume and develop a sustainable diet. You won’t find processed foods at Provision Kitchen because the chemist and researcher in McClendon can’t bear to serve something with diminished nutritional value that might contain additives and preservatives unnatural to the human condition. One of McClendon’s business pillars is to “retain the natural nutrients found within food, which aid in more absorption and easier digestion.” So, all Lyon had to do was create a seasonal program of entrees and side dishes to meet that standard and be delicious for breakfast, lunch, dinner, snacks and desserts. TRAINED TO KNOW McClendon didn’t take a common path to the food-service industry. After graduating from Baylor University with bachelor of science degrees in biology and chemistry in 2008, she earned her Master of Public Health in epidemiology and biostatistics from the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas, focusing on disease prevention over treatment. That led to her gig at MD Anderson Cancer Center from 2010 to 2012. After that, she was named director of Texas Cancer Research Biobank at the Baylor College of Medicine’s Human Genome Sequencing Center. In other words, she’s trained to know what’s good for you. While Provision Kitchen will cater mostly to takeout orders, it does have a 30-seat dining room with microwave ovens to warm entrees and a couple of dispensers for house-made lemonade. Curb service is available, and delivery is in the plans for next year. For more information, call 843-2310 or go to provision-kitchen.com.

SOPHIE (@RUN.LOVE.DOG), HEELER MIX Sophie was rescued as a tiny, little runt five years ago. Nowadays, she enjoys the good life with her two rescued dog pals in Norman. Sophie will pose for absolutely any photo as long as I have a ball in my hand and she knows a game of fetch is on the horizon. I’m beyond blessed to have this dog in my life. #adoptdontshop

NARWHAL (@HAYEMARGO), POMERANIAN Narwhal is 9. Earlier this summer we adopted Narwhal and her brother from All 4 One, a local small breed and senior dog rescue organization. Narwhal is always smiling and enjoys checking out her plants in the garden, napping and playing with her new family. She is so happy all the time and enjoys a special treat every once in a while. Her favorite snacks are apples, carrots and other veggies.

BODIE BODACIOUS (@TERRIERTEACHER), WIRE FOX TERRIER Bodie was rescued from a puppy mill when he was very young. He’s now 9 years old and has lived a “terrier-ific” life doing lots of dog sports and activities, including agility, rally obedience, earthdogging, barnhunting and even served as a therapy dog for nursing homes and adolescent psychiatric units. He was a guest dog at the OKC Zoo summer camps where he led children in movement games.

MARSHALL (@LOPEZ.WHITNEY), MALTIPOO I’m 4 months old. I enjoy running laps around my parents’ coffee table, eating beef jerky and pushing around my soccer ball. I love meeting new people (and puppies) and can make friends with just about anyone. Even though I’m only 7 pounds, I’m pretty sure I can keep up with any dog I play with.

SAMPSON, YELLOW LAB Sampson is 4. He’s an avid duck hunter. He has a complete love affair with his mom, Myrla. He follows her around the house everywhere. He even loves to exercise with her every morning, especially sit-ups. He likes to lay on his back next to her and pretend that he can do sit-ups, too.

Abandoned last spring by her previous owner at 9 months, we wanted to take her in and give her a good home — despite having zero prior knowledge of guinea pigs and their ways. And we soon learned about the demanding whistles and cage-rattles, “popcorn” jumps of happiness, hilarious games and antics, and complete immense pleasure it is to live with a guinea pig. I adopted her from a shelter earlier this year, and we were all a little bit concerned that she’d never get over her fear of people — her first few days at home were spent hiding in blanket cocoons and dark corners. I’m happy to say she’s had a complete transformation since then. Now, Pickle is the snuggliest, happiest dog I’ve ever met. She wags with her whole body when she’s excited, which is anytime she’s not wearing this raincoat.

t’s been talked about for more than two years and this month it finally become official. Oklahoma City is getting a professional soccer franchise in the North American Soccer League (NASL). Sold Out Strategies, led by OKC businessman Brad Lund, hosted a press conference at Yukon High School to make the announcement. NASL commissioner Bill Peterson was there as well. Rayo Vallecano is a club in La Liga, the top league in Spain, joined forces with Lund and his group earlier this year to form a partnership to

get OKC a franchise. It is the first investment from any team in La Liga in U.S. soccer, according to the folks at Sold Out Strategies. So, this being said, let’s get to what we know. Rayo OKC, or the Oklahoma City Lightning, if you’d like, will begin play in 2016 in the NASL. Rayo OKC will play its home games at Yukon High School, a 6,000-seat stadium that opened just four years ago. The NASL, unlike other professional soccer leagues, plays a spring season and a fall season leading up to the playoffs. The team in first at the conclusion of the spring season earns an automatic qualifier, into the playoffs. Same goes

for the fall champ and the next two sides also get in. Now, what about that other team? The biggest question or the highlight of this announcement is that Oklahoma City will now have two professional soccer clubs. Oklahoma City Energy FC has been in business for two full seasons in the United Soccer League. Fans immediately began asking questions on how this will work. The Energy has consistently produced solid crowds in 30 home contests but has only sold out half of the games. Are there enough soccer fans in Oklahoma City to support two clubs? Only time will tell. Streetcar contract deal falls apart

JULY 2015 Inekon project manager Milan Haloun emails Carpenter on the 13th, saying he sent a sample letter of credit “some time ago.” Carpenter asks for a resend; Haloun complies. On the 24th, Carpenter writes back to say the sample language is “generally okay” but the total amount “will not be automatically reduced prior to expiration.” She asks for a draft letter of credit specific to the Oklahoma City project.

contract to have Inekon Group a.s. of the Czech Republic build five MAPS 3 streetcars lapsed last month when the manufacturer missed a deadline to submit financial guarantees. Inekon Chairman Josef Husek contends Oklahoma City “substantially changed terms and conditions” too late for the company to comply. The city’s attorney, Amanda Carpenter, says terms were clear from the beginning. Here’s a look how the deal fell apart. AUGUST 2014 Oklahoma City issues a “request for proposals,” or RFP, to build MAPS 3 streetcars. In remarks to the city council Tuesday, Carpenter said it was “made explicitly clear” in the RFP that the primary financial document, known as a “performance bond” or “letter of credit,” had to be for 100 percent of the contract’s value. DECEMBER 2014 An evaluation committee ranks proposals. Inekon finishes first; Brookville Equipment Corp., a Pennsylvania manufacturer, is ranked second. SEPTEMBER 2015 Inekon sends a draft letter of credit specific to Oklahoma City on the 24th. The council approves Inekon’s $23 million contract on the 29th. That morning, Carpenter sends handwritten revisions to the letter of credit, deleting draft language providing for the financial guarantees to begin low and increase as Oklahoma City makes payments during the two-year manufacturing process. OCTOBER 2015 Inekon’s Michal Obrucnik writes on Oct. 1, saying Carpenter’s deletions amount to “major modifications.” A financial guarantee enforceable only in the amount of partial payments is a “very important clause for our banks,” he says. Inekon will have to pledge securities amounting to $32

million to its banks, Obrucnik writes. On the 5th, Carpenter reiterates that the guarantee must be for 100 percent of the contract price. “This is very important to the city because the performance bond is the city’s most effective way of enforcing the contract and collecting damages should that be necessary,” she writes. On the 7th, Inekon Chairman Husek asks MAPS 3 Program Manager David Todd to relent on the required guarantee; on the 12th, Todd responds, saying the city “is not able to agree to such a request.” On the 15th, Obrucnik writes to say the company has accepted “all the changes you have requested.” On the 28th, citing “ambiguous” language in the RFP and contract, Husek writes again to say Inekon cannot provide by the next day the required performance bond, covering the manufacturing process, and a warranty bond, covering the twoyear warranty period. He asks for 45 more days to get the required guarantees nailed down. At 4:29 p.m., Carpenter replies that the city cannot agree to the request for an extension. Husek writes again on the 29th, repeating Inekon’s request for an extension. Todd writes back at 4:06 p.m. to say the requirements were clear. At 5 p.m., as the deadline passes, the agreement expires.

With talk of liquor law change, everything is on the table

ith strong public support for allowing wine and strong beer in Oklahoma grocery and convenience stores, liquor store owners know that change is probably coming in one form or another. Art Rutledge, who owns Vice Spirits, Wine and Beer at 317 N Walker, said he knows that it’s likely that Oklahoma could possibly vote as soon as 2016 to reform state liquor laws. He only hopes that any changes to state law

Page 30

November 18 - December 1, 2015

also will help his small business to continue to compete with large grocery and convenience store chains. Like many liquor store owners, Rutledge would like to see the laws change to allow him to sell nonalcoholic items in his store, like cigars and club soda, now banned by state law. “I am worried, but if they allow us to sell nonalcohol items and open up more revenue streams for liquor stores, I think it can offset that loss,” Rutledge said. “However, if they don’t do that, I see it impacting a lot of liquor stores in Oklahoma.” Like Rutledge, Vance Gregory, who owns

Edmond Wine Shop, 1520 S Boulevard, knows that change to Oklahoma’s liquor laws is probably inevitable, but he wants to minimize the harm to his business. “If you just overnight flip a switch and let every convenience store and grocery store sell wine and beer, then we are in a world of hurt,” he said. After polling conducted by the Oklahoma Retail Liquor Association earlier this year found strong public support in favor of changing Oklahoma’s liquor laws, the group came out in support of reforms, marking a major pivot from liquor store owners’ past opposition.

The liquor store industry group’s new position includes support for a proposal that would allow wine in a limited number of grocery stores. Gregory said he would like to see licenses for grocers to sell wine issued in phases, or a limited number of licenses issued to each grocer. “It would give us some time to compete,” he said. “We are probably going to see the demographics of our business model change rather drastically.” Gregory also would like to be able to sell items like corkscrews and cheese. He knows that grocers won’t be able to offer the broad selection of wines that Edmond Wine Shop carries, but he fears that many grocery stores will use the more popular brands as loss leaders to lure his customers away. Oklahoma also could look to Colorado, where only a limited number of grocers are allowed licenses to sell strong alcoholic beverages, said Kevin Hall, an organizer for League of Oklahomans for Change in Alcohol Laws, or LOCAL. The Oklahoma Grocers Association, which represents independent grocers and convenience stores, as well as suppliers and wholesalers, is willing to support reforms that would allow for liquor stores to sell non-alcohol items, but wants all grocery and convenience stores to be able to sell wine and strong beer, said Ron Edgmon, president and CEO of OGA. “We feel like we should be able to sell the wine in all of our locations,” he said. “How would you select what locations would get licenses? We feel like it should be an equal playing field and a free market.” After working on the issue over the past year, Edgmon said he believes there is enough support to change state liquor laws. “We are very antiquated and we would very much like to modernize it and modernize the whole thing,” Edgmon said. “We want to get it where it’s consumer friendly is primarily our position.”

Dramatic change is coming to the east entrance of Bricktown

S

teel is going up in the Steelyard section of Bricktown, providing a hint of the dramatic change set to occur along the once sleepy east entrance to the entertainment district. The area was home to W.H. Stewart Co. a metal fabrication complex that operated between 1934 and 2003. Site clearance was completed last year, and the Criterion music hall, at the southwest corner of Charlie Christian and Sheridan avenues, was the first structure up. Plumbing is done, shell work is underway, and brick, delivered to the site, is set to go up this next month. The concert venue is set to open in April and will be operated by Levelland Productions with co-promotion by Live Nation, the world’s largest live music promoter. Steel work also has started on the Springhill Suites at the southeast corner of Charlie Christian and Sheridan avenues. The 126-room, five-story, $15 million hotel is expected to open in a year. To the west of the Criterion, Joey Chaif is planning to extend an existing surface parking lot with 139 spaces, extending to Joe Carter Avenue. The long wait for developers Gary Brooks and Andy Burnett should end within the next two months, with vertical construction set to start on the Steelyard. Foundation work has started on the first phase of the mixed-use development on the north side of Sheridan Avenue between Joe Carter and Charlie Christian avenues. The first phase, totaling $45 million, will include 250 apartments and 17,000 square feet of retail. The first apartments are scheduled to open by summer 2017. A second phase, between Charlie Christian Avenue and Lincoln Boulevard, will add another 150 apartments and 9,000 square feet of retail with construction expected to start in 2017. Newcrestimage is set to close on the purchase of the northeast corner of Joe Carter and Sheridan avenues with plans to build a 133-room, five-story Hyatt Place, a 136-room, five-story AC Hotel, and a three-story restaurant and lounge.

NOVEMBER 28 • 9 P.M. Costello is a moody, soulful project from Clare Costello (vocals/guitar), Jason Scott (drums) and Felix Rodriguez (bass). The Norman-based trio is newer to the music scene but have their sights set on expansion with “Manifest,” which will get its OKC album release celebration on Nov. 28. Trap Queen and Em & the MotherSuperiors are on opening duty. Clare, 21, had this to share about album highlight “Yard”: “I wrote the lyrics to ‘Yard’ two summers ago, in my yard. My writing process is very is different from one song to the next. With ‘Yard,’ lyrics came first, and they happened all at once. I spend a lot of time in nature — sitting, meditating, thinking, writing. The lyrics reflect the disconnect of individuals in society and the lack of awareness of acculturated mind patterns that subconsciously govern our lives. I have dealt with anxiety and depression nearly all of my young life, and though I used to dwell on this and self-loathe, I now am grateful for realizing and accepting my illnesses because it has, in a way, forced me to look inward and observe my mind, expand my mind and connect.” Costello recorded alongside Chad Copelin and Sam Welchel at Blackwatch Studios in Norman. Dan Millice of Engine Room Audio in New York City mastered “Manifest.”

In fact, Chaufas is a Peruvian interpretation of classic Chinese stir-fried rice that Chef Niel Zambrano said ranks only behind ceviche in popularity in Peru. La Brasa has three chaufa-style dishes to choose from. My favorite marriage between Asian and Peruvian cuisine at La Brasa is the spectacular Pollo a la Brasa y China. The family-friendly feast consists of two whole charbroiled chickens, scented with more than a dozen spices and marinated two days in a secret combination of citrus juices, plus Peruvian aji, kimchi, pickled cucumbers, an herb basket, shiso leaves, Romaine lettuce and six dipping sauces (Ssamjang, chimichurri, aji amarillo, limo and verde, hoisin and Thai sweet chili). The leaves of lettuce are fresh and crisp enough to make you forget how little Peruvians regard the tortilla.
