GEORGE L ANG

n one specific respect, I am perfectly normal: from the time I was 20 years old, the year I spent Christmas morning walking a four-hour security watch on the pier at Yokosuka Navel Base in Japan, I had trouble getting into the spirit of things. If I was lucky, I’d start to experience that difficult-to-attain feeling of everything being right in my world about five minutes before it was over. Part of the problem is the journalist’s holiday lament: you can take time off, but only if you work twice as hard for about a week before you leave the building. By the time the death march to vacation is over, most of us feel like spending the holidays in an “Altered States”-style sensory deprivation tank, floating in 98-degree saline solution in total darkness in an effort to reset scrambled nerves. At that point, I consider careers that do not require actual writing, and yet I always come back, healed, ready to create again. This is what I do. It’s either this, or become a burden on society. But my spirit got a great annual boost after my son, Sam, was born. He’s six now, and for those who pay attention to the arc of Christmas behavior in children, this is the absolute top of the holiday hysteria bell curve. So now Laura and I get the tree up around Thanksgiving and I create the grand-poobah monster of Spotify Christmas playlists — 235 tracks at last count. Sam, who has this amazing voice for a BY GEORGE LANG 6-year-old but doesn’t like performing in front LOOKATOKC EDITOR of people yet, does Christmas karaoke around GLANG@OPUBCO.COM the tree and makes his own ornaments and BLOG.NEWSOK.COM/ watches all the Rankin-Bass and “Peanuts” STATICBLOG Christmas specials on a constant loop. At our house, you get into the spirit just by osmosis. So, it’s not a surprise that this holiday feeling actually makes it back to my office, where everybody’s in a constant state of mental exhaustion from putting out a paper every day during the most wonderful time of the year. Two years ago, I staged the first Static Christmas special, in which I invited Wayne Coyne and Steven Drozd of the Flaming Lips into our studio to record holiday favorites, and Wayne even regaled us with an impromptu reading of “’Twas the Night Before Christmas.” The following year, we invited several local musicians to pair up and perform their favorite Christmas songs for “The Static Holiday Spectacular,” and it lived up to its name. This week, on NewsOK.com, you can see “Static Xmas,” a new special we taped at the Deep Deuce Grill featuring Josh Sallee and Adam Case, Marcy Priest and Sean C. Johnson, Maggie McClure and Shane Henry, the Nghiems and Cami Stinson, and Denver Duncan and OK Sweetheart’s Erin Austin. Everyone on the show gave it their all, and I cannot thank them enough for coming together for this 54th episode of “Static.” If you don’t have a 6-year-old in constant Christmas mode to make the holidays endlessly festive, “Static Xmas,” which you can see at static.newsok.com, is a fine substitute. Not the same, mind you, but pretty cool in its own right. May your days be merry and bright, LOOKatOKC readers. We’ll see you next year.

The best ‘Okie’ albums of 2011 1. “Earthbound Blues” by John Moreland (self-released)

>>> Track five of John Moreland’s stupendous album “Earthbound Blues” was enough to have me floored. The song is called “Ancient Youth,” and the slow-burning country tune propelled the Tulsa singer’s album to become my favorite 2011 Okie release. “Youth” is so good that I explored the song at a molecular level. Strip away the song’s electric guitars. Remove the stunning back up vocals from Ali Harter, Samantha Crain and Kelly Johnson. Forget about Choctawbased producer Matt Street’s stellar production values. What you have left is Moreland’s heavy, raspy voice tenderly reflecting on the death of a friend he regretted losing touch with before his death. You won’t find another Okie album this year containing the emotional punch and songwriting prowess of “Earthbound Blues.”

2. “Tamer Animals” by Other Lives (TBD Records) >>> There are few 2011 success stories in the music world that can dwarf the impact of Other Lives’ “Tamer Animals.” The Stillwater quintet spent about 18 months building their sophomore album and wound up snagging an opening gig for indie heavyweight Radiohead. “Animals” is one part spaghetti western film score and two parts mystery novel. Why is it a mystery? Because it’s so hard to believe Oklahoma is lucky enough to have this album made within its borders.

3. “Can’t Get Past the Lips” by Broncho (self-released) >>> If I could elect a leader for the emergence of abnormally good punk music coming out of Norman then it would be Broncho. The band’s debut clocks in at a brisk 20 minutes but good luck listening to songs such as “Try Me Out Sometime” and “I Don’t Really Want To Be Social” just once. This feverish collection of punk tunes will leave you almost as bruised as the band’s rowdy live shows.

4. “My _____ is Pink” by Colourmusic (Memphis Industries) >>> The sophomore album from everyone’s favorite Stillwater/OKC/England-based rock act is a departure from Colourmusic’s debut and all expectations I had for the <<<

band. Every track belches scuzzy, bombastic guitar sounds and an emphasis on strangeness. I like how brave it sounds, but I love how mean it is. “Pink” is the equivalent to a bully turning you upside down, holding your feet and shaking out your preconceived notions of rock music. Turn this one up and hold on.

5. “Grow Deep, Grow Wild” by Horse Thief (self-released) >>> Think of Horse Thief’s debut album as a war cry. Namely, the standout track “Warrior.” It’s a four-minute psychedelic folk trip that explores the beauty of Oklahoma and the power of the human mind. More than anything, it’s a testament to how good a local release can sound and a refreshingly smart album full of detailed stories fit for a bestselling novel.

6. “Depth & Current” by Depth & Current (Nice People) >>> Norman’s shoegaze powerhouse released a spooky gem so scary and booming that it can’t help but shake the shingles off of your neighbor’s roof.

7. “Signs and Signifiers” by JD McPherson (Hi-Style) >>> Tulsa’s JD McPherson successfully recreates and revives rockabilly songs so fresh that it makes the ’50s jealous.

8. “Crown Imperial EP” by Crown Imperial (Sundae Records) >>> This EP is not only a taste of the band’s Velvet Underground/Cure infused potential but also it’s a tease of what could be an incredible full-length album.

9. “O You, Stone Changeling” by Brine Webb (self-released) >>> Brine Webb released a collection of moody ballads that act like heartfelt farewells. Once they end, it’s not always easy to shake off the final impression. Good thing you won’t want to either.

10. “World War Fun” by The Boom Bang (Nice People) >>> The beachy fun of a California surf rock band and the crunchy sounds of a New York garage act found a happy Oklahoma home in the form of The Boom Bang’s full-length debut.

‘UNDUN’ – THE ROOTS

ossibly the saddest but most thematically ambitious work of The Roots’ lengthy career, “Undun” is a brief and emotionally rich concept album about Redford Stevens, a fictional street criminal killed in pursuit of ill-gotten gains. Working backward from his death, “Undun” unspools with downcast cinematic lushness — a little Marvin Gaye’s “What’s Going On,” a bit of Curtis Mayfield, and some Kanye West circa “808s and Heartbreak” — and much like the Guess Who song that lends the album its title, it was too late for Redford Stevens. “I did it all for the money, Lord,” Big K.R.I.T. raps on “Make My,” the character’s last words as he prepares to “make my departure from the world.” Anchored by Questlove’s

constant groove, The Roots deliver an unabashedly beautiful musical coda, setting the listener up for the rousing “One Time,” depicting Redford at his height of gangsta power, fearless, and the band constructs a stately, rousing melody that belies the fact that Redford is going “to make it to the bottom, it’s such a hard climb.” After marking off the character’s life from end to beginning, “Undun” ends with a four-movement suite, beginning with Sufjan Stevens’ “Redford (For Yia Yia and Pappou)” and then culminating in a crash of drums and cascading piano lines and an ending string quartet, mournfully exhaling the last life out of Redford. It’s a thug’s life, but as “Undun” so deftly illustrates, there was a time of hope before the street got him. For years, The Roots’ best card to play was the consummate musicianship of

‘THE SOUND OF A MILLION DREAMS’ – DAVID NAIL

he details make the difference on “The Sound of a Million Dreams,” the sophomore album from singer-songwriter David

Nail. With his 2009 debut effort, “I’m About to Come Alive,” Nail, 32, earned a Grammy nomination for best male country performance for “Turning Home” and an Academy of Country Music Award nod for single of the year for “Red Light.” Fans who made those previous singles top 20 hits should enjoy the followup album as Nail, who considers Glen Campbell one of his musical heroes, explores a modern-day take on the Countrypolitan sound. Like most contemporary country artists, Nail’s music merges country storytelling with arena rock,

pop and even R&B influences. Yes, his songs bear more obvious sonic resemblance to Fleetwood Mac, the Black Crowes and even Elton Johnthan, say, Waylon Jennings, Willie Nelson and Merle Haggard, but with his butter-rich vocals, the Missouri native is never going to be mistaken for gritty. Once again, Nail proves that his strength is using that soulful voice to transport listeners into the songs and the places, feelings and stories in them. The album opener, “Grandpa’s Farm,” includes many of the same lyrical ingredients as the glut of sloppy Southern-fried rural anthems on the country charts: honeysuckle, fishing and even dirt streets. But Nail makes you feel the sticky heat and see the sheets flapping on the clothesline as he woos a city girl visiting her country relatives

to the tune of a funky country-blues groove complete with big-voiced gospel backup singers and playful piano flourishes. He makes apparent his allegiances to multiple musical genres with the title track, a nostalgic piano ballad that references Bob Seger, Bruce Springsteen and Haggard and conjures up memories of youthful follies and regrets. Nail doesn’t sound like anyone else in mainstream contemporary country, but apparently fans of the format are ready for his countrysoul fusion. Leadoff single “Let It Rain,” a heart-piercing portrait of a man accepting the consequences of cheating on his wife, already has reached No. 9 on the Billboard country songs chart and is gaining ground. — Brandy McDonnell Entertainment Writer

‘BACK TO LOVE’ – ANTHONY HAMILTON

rom his earliest recordings, soul singer Anthony Hamilton always delivered his love songs with a hint of classicism, as if he could not wait to cut out the synthetic beats and get down to some seriously traditional R&B, and “Back to Love,” Hamilton’s seventh album, is the closest the North Carolina native has gotten to fulfilling that promise. But “Back to Love” does not fully commit to its neo-retro concept: For every track that could fit on a Chi-Lites or Al Green album, there’s an exercise in Babyface-produced 1990s-style R&B or, even worse, icy synth-soul reminiscent of John Legend’s misbegotten “Evolver” disc. For the good news, go directly to the opening title song, a stunning organic soul ballad showcasing

Hamilton’s great falsetto. Salaam Remi’s production is packed with as many classic sounds as his productions for Amy Winehouse were — he surrounds Hamilton with flutes, horns and strings as the singer pleads for another shot. Everything about the song speaks to truth and real soul, and two tracks later, “Woo” takes another tack and comes up winning, first by replicating the drum sound Willie Mitchell perfected on Al Green’s and Ann Peebles’ albums and then ladling on all the other great Mitchell hallmarks — organ, sharp horns and strings. Hamilton’s voice is worthy of such environments, and on “Woo,” “Best of Me” and the amazing Stylistics tribute “I’ll Wait (To Fall in Love”), he is thoroughly in his best element. Such utter triumphs make all the second-guessing and half-measures on “Back to Love” utterly confound-

ing. “Pray For Me,” which namechecks both Jesus and Oprah Winfrey, would border on embarrassing even if Babyface’s pristine mid-1990s digital mix didn’t make it an instant dud, and the pings and blips powering his duet with Keri Hilson, “Never Let Go,” sound like they came from

a different planet from the powerful soul-shouting closer, “More Than Enough.” “Back to Love” shows that Hamilton deserves greatness, but lacks the confidence in the singer’s earthy talents to let him completely achieve it. — George Lang, LookatOKC Editor

‘NEW YEAR’S EVE’

Rating: PG-13 (Language including some sexual references.) Running time: 1 hour, 57 minutes Starring: Michelle Pfeiffer, Zac Efron, Robert De Niro, Ashton Kutcher, Lea Michele, Jon Bon Jovi, Katherine Heigl, Josh Duhamel, Hilary Swank, Sarah Jessica Parker, Halle Berry.

Lots of stars, no power in ‘New Year’s Eve’

G

arry Marshall’s “New Year’s Eve” is roughly as entertaining and festive as having a champagne bottle whipped at your head in Times Square. In his second attempt to cinematically decimate a holiday (watch your back, Arbor Day), Marshall straps half of Hollywood’s A-list into a haphazard, “Love Boat”-style series of cliche-riddled vignettes and then points the Pacific Princess at the nearest iceberg. And it just does not matter how cheesy and talentwasting “New Year’s Eve” is at its best and utterly mortifying at its worst, because with Michelle Pfeiffer, Zac Efron, Robert De Niro, Ashton Kutcher, “Glee’s” Lea Michele, Jon Bon Jovi, Katherine Heigl, Josh Duhamel, Hilary Swank, Sarah Jessica Parker and Halle Berry signed up, this thing is box office gold. Unfortunately for the masses that will pile into theaters to see it, “New Year’s Eve” promises a kiss at midnight but feels like a stomach cramp instead. Start with the competing birth story, in which Jessica Biel and Seth Meyers play a couple vying against another set of expectant parents (Sarah Paulson and Til

Schweiger) to deliver the firstborn New York City baby of 2012. There are enough awful colloquial names for private parts thrown around in this maternity ward of horrors to bring up suspicions that Hollywood monologue doctor Bruce Vilanch is delivering the infants. Instead, “New Year’s Eve” screenwriter Katherine Fugate is the one and only credited screenwriter to blame, but she seemingly cribbed every storyline from other films or television shows, so there is a cast of a thousand scribes having their ideas repeated here. Consider that Efron and Pfeiffer, easily the most interesting players present, play a cocky New York City messenger helping a repressed middle-age woman complete a list of things she’s always wanted to do — in other words, “The Bucket List.” Duhamel is desperately trying to find the woman he fell in love with at first sight the previous New Year’s Eve, as if he were John Cusack trying to find Kate Beckinsale in “Serendipity.” And Kutcher and Michele are mismatched neighbors leaving their building via the elevator and ... there simply is not enough room to list the past-theirprime sitcoms that have employed that one. Furthermore, De Niro is playing a bedridden dying man in a hospital whose last wish, expressed to his nurse

(Berry) is to see the Times Square ball drop — oh wait, that’s pretty much “The Bucket List” again. The rest of it just strains credulity: Bon Jovi plays a Bon Jovi-like singer with one name — “Jensen” — whose apparent claim to fame is doing bar-band covers of Otis Redding’s “I Can’t Turn You Loose,” Meat Loaf’s “Two Out of Three Ain’t Bad” and John Hiatt’s “Have a Little Faith in Me,” and yet the crowds are losing their minds over this singular genius, who is trying to get back together with a chef (Heigl) assisted by a sassy Colombian (Sofia Vergara, of course). As they did with “Valentine’s Day,” Marshall just seemingly throws Fugate’s storylines in the air and allows them to fall where they may — there’s little rhyme or reason to how “New Year’s Day” comes together. Sure, a few of the performers look like they’re doing some heavy dramatic lifting at times, including Pfeiffer and, surprisingly, Duhamel — give this actor some distance from Heigl, and we might see something truly impressive someday. But “New Year’s Eve” just makes 2012 look like a bigger disaster than Roland Emmerich’s “2012.” At least “Groundhog Day” is probably off limits.

‘The Sitter’ struggles to find right rhythm

I

n critics’ shorthand, “The Sitter” can be quickly described as “After Hours” meets “Adventures in Babysitting.” This mashup of elements from Martin Scorsese’s edgy 1985 gambol through Manhattan’s midnight underbelly and Chris Columbus’ larky 1987 kids and teens escapade adds up to an R-rated comedy that’s an uncomfortable blending of rough and cuddly. As a star vehicle for Jonah Hill (“Superbad”), a schlubby Everyman whose comic lineage runs from Fatty Arbuckle through John Belushi, John Candy and Chris Farley, this shambling comedy offers up an escalating series of absurd, ill-considered situations that get more bizarre, convoluted and implausible as the night rolls on. The farcical, far-fetched story by first-time scripters Brian Gatewood and Alessandro Tanaka casts Hill as a likable, wiseacre slacker named Noah Griffin, who has been kicked out of college and lives at home with his desperate-to-date single mom (Jessica Hecht). To facilitate his mother’s big night out, Noah reluctantly agrees to baby-sit the kids next door and finds himself in charge of

an adolescent trio of dysfunctional little terrors. There’s the jittery Slater (Max Records of “Where the Wild Things Are”), a pill-popping neurotic with serious issues about his budding sexuality; tart little sister Blithe (precocious newcomer Landry Bender), a foul-mouthed, mascaraed, pint-size party girl; and adopted brother Rodrigo (Kevin Hernandez), a surly little sociopath with a penchant for dropping cherry bombs down toilets. As the sitter and his unruly charges settle in for an uneasy evening of TV watching, Noah gets a call from his supposed “girlfriend,” the manipulative diva Marisa (Ari Graynor) urging him to join her at a hip downtown party — oh, and to pick up some nose candy along the way. So Noah decides it’s a good idea to load his three charges into their dad’s pristine minivan and head out into the night to score some drugs. It’s a dubious decision that not surprisingly deteriorates into a visit to the surreal den of a gun-slinging drug dealer (Sam Rockwell); the accidental purloining of a large cocaine stash; the crashing of a bat mitzvah to steal some cash; the quick burglary of a jewelry store; a dicey

LOOKATOKC.COM

visit to an after-hours gangbangers’ club; and several other nightmarish, night-on-the-town misadventures. Director David Gordon Green, who has graduated from the subtle, indie promise of “George Washington” and “Undertow” to the raunchy comedy of “Pineapple Express,” TV’s “Eastbound & Down” and this, pushes the weird, episodic story forward with high spirits but rough craft (and no concern for logic). When things threaten to get too raunchy or ridiculous, he slows down to let Noah, with all his hard-won worldly wisdom, gently counsel each of the children with a mild, mushy, be-true-to-yourself speech — which the likable Hill pulls off with surprising aplomb. There are some queasy laughs here and there and some strong performances from the good supporting cast. But mainly “The Sitter” is a showcase for Hill and his goofy, regular-Joe persona, and you might just find yourself pulling for the guy, despite the chaotic, lowdown script he’s saddled with. Let’s hope after this derivative, minimum-wage gig he moves on to better, and funnier, — Dennis King, Wimgo.com things.

‘SHERLOCK HOLMES: A GAME OF SHADOWS’

Rating: PG-13 (Intense sequences of violence and action, and some drug material) Running time: 2 hours, 8 minutes Starring: Robert Downey Jr., Jude Law, Noomi Rapace, Jared Harris, Stephen Fry.

stars

***

Downey finds adventure in ‘Shadows’

I

t’s elementary: Guy Ritchie and Robert Downey Jr.’s version of Sherlock Holmes is a 7 percent solution of adrenaline suspended in testosterone, a character that bears the name but is younger, cooler and moves with the stealth of a Victorian ninja. For strict adherents to Arthur Conan Doyle’s original stories, Ritchie and Downey have co-opted their hero’s name for something fairly alien, but Doyle’s Holmes was an eccentric who kept “his cigars in the coal-scuttle, his tobacco in the toe end of a Persian slipper.” In other words, Downey is perfect for the role. For “Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows,” Downey proves again that no deerstalker hats are needed to play the detective. In this loose assembly of ideas cribbed in part from Doyle’s “The Final Problem,” Holmes and Dr. John Watson (Jude Law) are embroiled in Watson’s bachelor party when the first evidence of a sinister plot presents itself. A plot is in place to pit the nations of Europe against one

another, and Holmes’ archnemesis, Professor Moriarty (Jared Harris of “Mad Men”), stands to profit from a constant state of war. So, shortly after the good doctor exchanges vows with Mary (Kelly Reilly), Holmes whisks him away on an adventure that, with the assistance of gypsy fortune teller Sim (Noomi Rapace), takes them on a breakneck ride through Europe, from the catacombs under Paris to a climactic meeting of European leaders in a Swiss castle. Each set piece is rendered with a mixture of antique realism and romantic steam-punk imagery. Ritchie beautifully creates visions of 1891 Paris and London that deftly mix recognizable architecture with cityscapes that met their ruin long ago. With “A Game of Shadows,” Downey and Ritchie spend much of their energy on Holmes’ excellence as a master of disguise, with Downey’s Holmes employing elaborate bodysuits to blend into walls and furniture and even going drag in a well-executed scene.

Just in terms of his boundless energy and attitude, Downey’s Holmes is not far removed from Johnny Depp’s Capt. Jack Sparrow — the only difference is that “A Game of Shadows” is worthy of such a strong character. By surrounding Downey with strong players such as Law, Harris and Stephen Fry as Sherlock’s equally eccentric brother Mycroft, Ritchie fills “A Game of Shadows” with real characters instead of mere foils. Doyle purists might carp that the original Holmes did not possess such otherworldly sureness of foot or the aptitude for superhuman martial arts — a fair critique, to be sure. But “Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows” noticeably improves on the original film, giving Downey a coherent story based on Doyle’s ideas and a villain worthy of his wits. Putting that together with Downey’s insurmountable charisma, “A Game of Shadows” has more substance than its predecessor.

Michael Shannon shines in ‘Take Shelter’

I

f Michael Shannon is making a career out of convincingly portraying mentally unbalanced characters, he may have painted his masterpiece in the powerful “Take Shelter.” Having earned an Oscar nomination as the psychologically troubled neighbor’s son in “Revolutionary Road,” and stolen scenes as the overzealous Treasury agent on the HBO series “Boardwalk Empire,” the ever-intense actor now stirs an emotional tempest as Curtis LaForche, a working-class family man tortured by visions both real and imagined that seem to portend an apocalyptic climatological disaster — or his impending loss of sanity. Curtis lives in a small Ohio town with his wife, Samantha (Jessica Chastain), and 6-year-old daughter, Hannah (Tova Stewart), who is deaf. He makes a modest living as a crew chief for a sand-mining operation, while Samantha supplements their income as a part-time seamstress selling handmade creations at a weekend flea market. The LaForches struggle to pay for Hannah’s health care and special education, but Curtis and Samantha are

devoted to each other and to their little girl and they lead a reasonably happy family life. Then, paranoia creeps in. The opening scene finds Curtis standing in his driveway watching black-and-purple thunderheads building high in the sky — not an uncommon sight in the Ohio Valley, until his face and hands are pelted with raindrops discolored a dirty yellow. It’s unclear if this initial sequence is dream or reality, but it soon becomes obvious that Curtis’ sleep has lately been wracked with terrifying nightmares filled with dark and violent storms that threaten to sweep his family away. On some nights the terror is compounded by sinister, faceless figures bent on snatching his little girl from his grasp. In what seems to be waking daylight, he witnesses such disturbing sights as massive flocks of birds making odd shifting patterns in the sky. Are these signals of an encroaching catastrophe that will destroy all he has, or is a family history of mental illness swiftly overtaking him? Initially keeping his troubles a secret, Curtis busies

himself with the feverish, anxiety-fueled building of an elaborate and expensive storm shelter in his backyard, borrowing heavy machinery without his employer’s permission to get the job done. His obsessive behavior begins to seriously strain his relationships with friends, coworkers, neighbors and — worst of all — his wife (played with heartbreaking warmth and skillful understatement by Chastain). When at last he confides in Samantha, the strength of their bond is tested to the extreme. It’s through the LaForches’ family crisis that writer-director Jeff Nichols (“Shotgun Stories”) has fashioned an extraordinarily effective allegory on a more widespread fear gripping the world at large, of nature and economics spinning irreversibly out of control, symbolized by the dark, boiling cloud banks that bruise the sky — stunningly rendered by visual effects supervisor Chris Wells (“Avatar,” “The Curious Case of Benjamin Button”) — and driven home with gale force by Shannon’s memorably electric and moving performance as a man unsure of whether the threat to his family is a brewing storm or his — Gene Triplett, Entertainment Editor unraveling self.

‘THE E L DE R S CROL L S V: S K YRI M ’

‘Skyrim’ can, and will, take over your life

I

’ve explored the highest mountains and the deepest dungeons. I’ve killed hundreds of wolves, bandits and zombies, and been mauled by bears, trolls and giants. I’ve helped out lovelorn suitors, ghosts and a talking dog, and foiled the nefarious plots of vampires, evil mages and demon gods. Oh, and I’ve slain a few dragons. I’ve played more than 60 hours of “The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim” (Bethesda Softworks, for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, PC, $59.99), and after all that time I still feel like I’m just scratching the surface. I still have dozens of places to visit and quests to conquer, and if I didn’t have other obligations I could happily spend the rest of the year wandering around this massive fantasy world. “Skyrim” has taken over my life. But, hey, it’s a good life. It doesn’t look promising at first. You are a mysterious prisoner being led to your death. As you rest your head under the executioner’s blade, though, a dragon arrives and starts belching fire — giving you a chance to escape. The return of the flying lizards, long missing from the “Elder Scrolls” world of Tamriel, is the central mystery in “Skyrim.” And your character — the mythical Dragonborn, who can absorb the powers of a dying dragon — is the key to its solution. You have plenty of options in creating your character: male or female, scrawny or brawny, human or elfin, catlike or reptilian. Unlike most role-playing games, however, you aren’t forced to choose one career. You can use magic, both healing and destructive, and still wield a wicked blade. (You can even use both at once, shooting fireballs with one hand while swinging your sword with the other.) Your skills improve the more you use them — so if, say, you prefer picking off enemies at a distance, you get better with a bow and arrow. As you explore Skyrim, you’ll meet various groups that would love to have the Dragonborn on their team. The world of “Skyrim” is vividly realized, from its humblest villages to its grandest castles. Even in its most isolated reaches, you’ll notice tiny details and find unexpected rewards. More than any other virtual world before it, Skyrim feels lived-in. And once you’ve moved in, you won’t want to leave. “Skyrim” is one of the most ambitious video games ever developed, and it lives up to its ambitions in every way. I could easily write a review 10 times this length describing all its wonderful surprises, but every gamer deserves the opportunity to forge his or her own path in this remarkable world. Just don’t trust the talking dog. The Associated Press

BEST OF 2011: MOVIES

BY GEORGE LANG, LOOKATOKC EDITOR

n the thick of summer, when the bad almost invariably outnumbers the good, each year always feels like the beginning of the end — a completely understandable emotion when half the screens in early July are playing “Transformers: Dark of the Moon.” So there is always someone available to declare every year the worst in film history, but this list, filled with great films spanning multiple genres, makes 2011 look like a golden age. >>>> No other 2011 film achieved such an exhilarating whiplash combination of romance and visceral ultraviolence as “Drive,” and come to think of it, that’s all in one unforgettable scene in Nicolas Winding Refn’s tense, stylish Los Angeles heist movie. “Drive” is “Shane” with real horsepower, starring Ryan Gosling in a mesmerizing performance as The Driver, a

man as rootless as the city whose underworld is lining up against him. A mechanic moonlighting as both a stunt driver and a getaway specialist, The Driver only speaks when spoken to, especially when the sad-eyed Irene (Carey Mulligan) is doing the talking, but his affection for Irene and her son ultimately puts him at odds with Bernie Rose, a mobbed-up movie producer and one of the most sinister film creations in years. Bernie is played like the devil himself by the great comedic actor and writer Albert Brooks, giving easily his best dramatic performance ... no, this is his personal best in any genre. Refn, the challenging, genre-defiant director of “Bronson” and “Valhalla Rising,” bathes “Drive” in the chrome and neon of Los Angeles during its New Wave 1980s and shoots it with the icy tones and kinetics of French cinema du look films such as “Diva.” “Drive” is, as Bernie Rose said as he was describing the movies he used to make in the 1980s, “kind of like action movies, sexy stuff. One critic called them ‘European.’” I call it the best of the

year by a long shot. >>>> With “The Guard,” writer-director John Michael McDonagh, brother of “In Bruges” auteur Martin McDonagh, proves that creating hilarious characters fueled by sly, specific prejudices runs in the family. Brendan Gleeson is a man for all mean seasons as Gerry Doyle, a longtime officer in the Garda Siochana, Ireland’s state police force. Gerry revels in his bad habits and foul vocabulary (something he learned from his sick mother, played by Fionnula Flanagan), but he’s the smartest man in the Garda, the perfect man to help FBI Special Agent Wendell Everett (Don Cheadle) try to catch some Emerald Isle drug smugglers. “The Guard” is full of people with petty axes to grind — the criminals don’t hate the police because they threaten their livelihood, they hate cops because of the kind of people who want to be cops. Gleeson knocks it out of the park in “The Guard,” an illtempered sociological satire disguised as a buddy movie.

BEST OF 2011: MOVIES “Moneyball” proves he has too much game in him to quit now.

>>>> Based on Brian Selznick’s “The Invention of Hugo Cabret,” “Hugo” is Martin Scorsese’s 3D tour de force, a story about a boy living in a Parisian train station whose recent orphan status, facility with time pieces and ownership of a mechanical automaton lead him into an unfolding mystery surrounding one of the great innovators of early cinema. Scorsese nails it in his first try at three dimensions, bringing the viewer into Hugo’s world instead of pushing elements into the theater. “Hugo” is phenomenal as an entertainment and just as valuable as a history lesson. It is a celebration of real magic.

>>>> In “Moneyball,” the 2002 Oakland Athletics are smarting from the loss of Jason Giambi and Johnny Damon, mainly because the club operates with a bankroll roughly one-quarter the buying power of either the New York Yankees or the Boston Red Sox, the two teams that regularly use the A’s as an “organ donor.” A’s general manager Billy Beane (Brad Pitt), with help from Yaleeducated economist Peter Brand (Jonah Hill), determines that the way forward lies in capitalizing on underrated players with exploitable stats who can get on base. While the premise for “Moneyball” is the baseball equivalent to counting cards, director Bennett Miller (“Capote”) and the screenwriting all-star team of Steven Zaillian and Aaron Sorkin tell a moving story about Beane, a man embroiled in a stormy, dysfunctional, lifelong love affair with his sport. Pitt recently said he is considering giving up acting once he hits 50, but his heartfelt work in

>>>> Dealing with the loss of life and love with uncommon emotional acuity and occasional jaw-dropping humor, writer-director Alexander Payne’s “The Descendants” is a near-perfect ensemble piece led by George Clooney in his best performance since “Out of Sight” and Shailene Woodley as his smart, justifiably angry daughter. Clooney’s Matt King not only has to make a judicious decision on a piece of unspoiled Hawaiian land his money-hungry extended family wants to develop, he must find a way to pull his nuclear family back together after getting double-punched by a marital crisis. >>>> “We Need to Talk About Kevin” will send most viewers into emotional sinkholes: director Lynne Ramsay’s first project since 2002’s “Morvern Callar” is a scarier film about motherhood than “Rosemary’s Baby.” Tilda Swinton plays Eva Khatchadourian, a successful woman with a loving husband (John C. Reilly) and a charmed life. Then she gives birth to a sociopath, played as a teenager by Ezra Miller as a brilliantly manipulative, calculating murderer. Swinton flawlessly plays Eva at all stages of the disaster, from idyllic pre-maternal marriage to the hollowed-out specter left in Kevin’s wake. Because of the emotional stakes and Swinton’s searing performance, “We Need to Talk About Kevin” is unforgettable, and for many viewers, especially parents, that could be a problem.

>>>> “Mission: Impossible: Ghost Protocol” scales the heights by simply being the hands-down best of the Tom Cruise-led franchise, a decade and a half after its launch. Director Brad Bird, best known for directing “The Incredibles” and “Ratatouille” for Pixar, brings his

love of the spy genre and his strong sense of energy and storytelling to the series, and the result is the first “M:I” film that can be loved without qualifiers. Cruise is back in top form, and his Impossible Mission Force (Paula Patton, Jeremy Renner and Simon Pegg) thrives under his leadership. Beyond all that, “Ghost Protocol” also features some instant-classic action scenes, tense set pieces fueled by the ultimate failure of most of the team’s technology and their smart, human reactions that save the day. >>>> It almost seems like a natural law that David Fincher should direct the English-language version of Stieg Larsson’s “The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo,” and the director of “Se7en” and “Zodiac” does not disappoint, injecting Larsson’s story with palpable existential dread. Nothing against Michael Nyqvist and Noomi Rapace, but Daniel Craig and Rooney Mara walk away with these characters — especially Mara, who fully embodies Lisbeth Salander’s combination of autodidact intellect and emotional damage. >>>> Through its whip-smart pacing and balletic combat sequences, “Hanna,” a supercharged fairy tale about a trained teenage assassin (Saoirse Ronan), looks unlike any other action film of 2011. “Atonement”/ “Pride and Prejudice” director Joe Wright completely rebuilt his directorial style, delivering a clean hit of unusual style featuring fine performances from Cate Blanchett and Eric Bana and a propulsive score from the Chemical Brothers. >>>> Of all the great films of 2011, “War Horse” is the one that feels “classic” in the sense that it plays like a sweet artifact of mid-20th century cinema: a tale of a boy, his beautiful horse and a war that separates them. Director Steven Spielberg and cinematographer Janusz Kaminski filmed “War Horse” in rich, saturated Technicolor-style hues and screenwriter Richard Curtis, the British master of romantic uplift, adapts Michael Morpurgo’s novel with the kind of uplift that feels genuine rather than calculated to wring tears.

BEST OF 2011: ALBUMS BY GEORGE LANG, LOOKATOKC EDITOR 1. Cut Copy, “Zonoscope” (Modular) >>>> The first great album of 2011 and still the best, Cut Copy’s “Zonoscope” represents a massive expansion of the Australian band’s electro-pop principles, a deep inhalation of top-shelf influences and the exhalation of perfect, transporting pop music in its purest sense. On songs such as the endlessly addictive “Take Me Over” and “Pharaohs & Pyramids,” “Zonoscope” often sounds like the beautiful noise made by compounded musical memories, a place where Fleetwood Mac and New Order are worshipped equally. In a refreshingly honest and unabashed move, Cut Copy released “A Tale of Two Journeys,” a free mixtape that plays like a “works cited” page for “Zonoscope” featuring King Sunny Ade, Ace Frehley, Fleetwood Mac, Shuggie Otis, Konk, the Bee Gees and Spiritualized, among others. That sounds like an odd mix, but Cut Copy understands the links between all those groups, and that knowledge is what makes “Zonoscope” so captivating. 2. Bon Iver, “Bon Iver” (Jagjaguwar) >>>> On 2008’s “For Emma, Forever Ago,” Justin Vernon came on with a more traditional folk approach, but “Bon Iver” completely confounds attempts to categorize it. A dreamy collection of memories collected from places both real (the opening “Perth”) and entirely imagined (“Hinnom, TX”), Vernon’s heavenly voice falls in layers

<<<

PAGE 26

I

over the songs. Sure, there is regret in these sounds (“I was not magnificent,” Vernon sings in the gorgeous “Holocene”), but on “Bon Iver,” sadness and celebration are woven into the same cloth. 3. M83, “Hurry Up, We’re Dreaming” (Mute) >>>> Anthony Gonzalez aimed for the epic in his follow-up to “Saturdays=Youth,” moving away from the imagined John Hughes soundtracks of that collection and into stadium-sized majesty on the constantly melodic double album, “Hurry Up, We’re Dreaming.” First single “Midnight City” and “Claudia Lewis” each feel like about 12 of the best parts of favorite songs, only Gonzalez didn’t actively steal from anyone, and track after track, M83 makes every sound worth hearing. This is big music, writ larger. 4. Kimbra, “Vows” (WEA Australia) >>>> Possibly the greatest young talent to debut in 2011, New Zealand singer-songwriter Kimbra Johnson’s eccentricity and stylistic range means she can move swiftly from the irresistible Northern Soul of “Cameo Lover” to the handclaps and odd syncopations of “Settle Down” and then still let the funk out on the jazzy “Call Me.” Fortunately, she also possesses the vocal skills to accomplish it all, but “Vows” only exists as an import in the U.S., so most listeners will have to wait for her domestic debut in 2012 to experience the magic. At that point, expect Kimbra to take over.

5. The Weeknd, “House of Balloons” (self-released) >>>> Cloaked in mystery upon its release, the Toronto-based project was later revealed to be the work of singer Abel Tesfaye and producers Doc McKinney and Illangelo, who created a sinister scenario about parties going bad and bodies draped over furniture the morning after. The title track, built on a Siouxsie and the Banshees sample, says it all: the “happy house” quickly segues into the debauchery of “Glass Table Girls.” Mission accomplished, gentlemen: “House of Balloons” is as beautiful as it is terrifying. 6. Jay-Z and Kanye West, “Watch the Throne” (Def Jam) >>>> “Watch the Throne” comes far more naturally than star-studded collaborations, mainly because Jay-Z and Kanye West operate inside a complicated relationship and maintain great chemistry even with the tension that occasionally crops up on tracks such as West’s “Big Brother.” But this album shows the two titans at their most affable, and the single “Otis” is as golden as that album cover. 7. Destroyer, “Kaputt” (Merge) >>>> Swaddled in arrangements that recall the expensive-sounding music of late-period Roxy Music and Steely Dan, Destroyer’s “Kaputt” finds Dan Bejar exploring mortality, apocalyptic imagery and the old, lost methods of of discovering his favorite music (“Sounds, Smash Hits, Melody Maker, NME — all sounds like a dream to me,” he sings on the title track.) “Kaputt” often sounds like a dream, as

well, but the surface romance courtesy of those Sade-like horn arrangements masks something less sweet. 8. Louis C.K., “Hilarious” >>>> The rise of comedy podcasts has created an unintended side-effect: sales of comedy albums are plummeting at a higher rate than other genres, prompting some industry experts to speculate about their imminent demise. But “Hilarious” proves that the form can be just as vital as it was in the glory days of Richard Pryor, Steve Martin and Eddie Murphy if it is done by a master at the height of his powers. C.K. is fearlessly offensive and his social commentary cuts deep, but it is his legendary comic timing that makes him essential. 9. Kendrick Lamar, “Section.80” (Top Dawg) >>>> Compton, Calif.’s Kendrick Lamar offers a wildly inventive reassessment of West Coast hip-hop on his debut. Lamar is deploying a sound, rhyme scheme and general aesthetic that is far weirder than the G-funk of old, sharptongued and merciless on tracks such as “A.D.H.D.” and the infectious “No Make-Up,” featuring underground legend-in-the-making Colin Munroe. 10. Toro Y Moi, “Underneath the Pine” (Carpark) >>>> A big blast of jazzy warmth, crisper and more focused than 2010’s “Causers of This.” Chaz Bundick largely leaves behind the sloppier elements of his “chillwave” beginnings in favor of fully formed songs with aggressive hooks, but while his compatriots such as Washed Out and Neon Indian clearly find their inspiration in archival synth-pop, many of Bundick’s songs such as “New Beat” and “Still Sound” carry grooves that would make Quincy Jones proud.

BEST OF 2011: FOOD BY DAVE CATHEY, THE FOOD DUDE

T

he local food scene was forever changed by the arrival of Whole Foods Market, but that wasn’t the only palate-quaking story of the year. Here, in no particular order, are 10 things that changed our dining habits in 2011:

1. THE WHOLE FOODS EFFECT: At long last, the clamoring of the Oklahoma Cityans and the deep pockets of Chesapeake Energy lured Whole Foods Market, which is a good thing by its lonesome. However, the more fulfilling effect was the way it pushed local grocers to up their game, not to mention the arrival of Sunflower Market and The Meat House. Local, organic and high-quality foods never had it so good in these parts.

4. THE RETURN OF PHIL CUSTINO: Chef Phil Custino brought Chicago’s Italian Roast Beef Sandwich to Oklahoma City in the 1990s before heading to California. Then Danny Falcone brought authentic New York-style pizza here six years ago, delivering quality slices available for individual purchase. Custino returned a few months ago, and now the two have partnered to offer Custino’s lasagna and meatballs at Falcone’s Pizzeria and Deli, 6705 N May Ave. It’s Philly and Danny, antipasti and cannoli. Fuhgeddabouditt.

5. RUTH’S SWEETE JUSTICE CLOSES: The city’s most prominent baker and sugar artist had to close her bakery in order to keep her schedule manageable. A good problem to have. Downside, her iced sugar cookies are no longer available. But fear not, there’s talk she’ll peddle them at the Arts Festival.

8. MUTT’S HOT DOGS OPENS: After inexplicably being passed over for Food Network’s “Great Food Truck Race,” the Big Truck Tacos gang didn’t rest on its laurels, choosing instead to open a new concept: Mutt’s Amazing Hot Dogs. Using the same gourmet treatment of street food as Big Truck, Mutt’s, 1400 NW 23 St., continues the efforts of Kathryn Mathis, Cally Johnson and Chris Lower to strengthen Oklahoma City culture while serving up a damn fine meal.

2. CRESCENT MARKET CLOSES: Part of the Whole Foods effect was the closing of the 122-yearold market in Nichols Hills. Robert and Beth Pemberton closed their doors at the end of October, leaving behind a legacy of local, organic and highquality foods. One of the top butcher shops in town, and the only carpeted grocery store I ever set foot in. It will be greatly missed.

6. BUTHIONS BUY BELLINI’S: Bellini’s opened in the Waterford Business Park back in 1990, the same year Portobello and Pepperoni Grill opened. Bellini’s lasted the longest under local, independent ownership and that now continues under the guidance of Michel and Alain Buthion, who own and operate La Baguette. With a new menu and an eye toward the state’s top collection of Italian wine, the outlook is good for this venerable property.

3. THE CANDIED-BACON STICKY BUN: Chef Josh Valentine and his wife Courtney opened The Divine Swine, 7801 N May Ave., in early fall, bringing into the universe this truly Oklahoma dish. Word is it’s so delicious it might be sent to the Large Hadron Collider to be tested for the “God” particle.

7. BIRRIERIA DIAZ OPENS: This little gem in on the corner of 39th Expressway and College in Bethany specializes in the traditional Mexican dish birria, which is usually a braised goat dish. At Diaz, it’s lamb or beef and served with homemade corn tortillas and a fleet of spicy condiment options. It’s the kind of ethnic concept that enriches a restaurant community.

9. TUCKER’S ONION BURGERS OPENS: A Good Egg Dining Group’s newest concept is in praise of Oklahoma’s natural burger recourse, the friedonion burger. Using the technique dating back to the Great Depression, Tucker’s, 324 NW 23 St., is off to a big start and restaurant No. 2 isn’t far away. Next stop: the world. 10. DELLA TERRA FINE PASTA HITS THE MARKET: Chef Chris Becker has been handcranking pasta, as he was taught at Mario Batali’s Del Posto in New York, for The Ranchers Club in Stillwater since 2009. Now, he’s hand-cranking it for his new company Della Terra Fine Pasta, which can be found at The Meat House and a growing number of restaurants. Try it once, and you’ll understand why pasta wasn’t born to swim in sauce. Find Chris’ outfit on Facebook, keyword della terra fine pasta.

BEST OF 2011: COMICS BY MATTHEW PRICE, FEATURES EDITOR

D

espite tough economic conditions, 2011 emerged as a strong year for comics. DC Comics regained the public’s attention with a publicized revamp of its superhero line, but not all of the year’s best comics involved capes and tights. The following is a list of some of the best comics of 2011 in variety of genres. BEST ADVENTURE: The Rocketeer Adventures

>>>> Dave Stevens created the Rocketeer in the early 1980s, a tribute to the serials of the 1930s and 1940s as pilot Cliff Secord finds a jetpack that allows him to race through the air. He and his mentor Peavy and girlfriend Betty (modeled after Bettie Page) starred in several adventures by Stevens and a 1991 motion picture. Stevens died in 2008, but IDW brought back his character The Rocketeer in 2011, with an anthology series that in part benefits hairy cell leukemia research. That would be reason enough to buy “The Rocketeer Adventures,” but the all-star lineup of creators have made a book that’s one of the year’s best. Kurt Busiek, Mark Waid, Jonathon Ross, Mike Allred, John Cassaday, Darwyn Cooke, Bruce Timm, Kyle Baker, Gene Ha, Michael Wm. Kaluta and Chris Weston contribute to this lovely taste of 1930s-style adventures.

ing characters from Napoleon to Nancy Drew in this collection of comic strips. BEST ROMANCE: Habibi >>>> Craig Thompson’s longawaited graphic novel “Habibi” is much more than a love story, but it is also that. Exotic and lush, yet heartbreaking at times, Thompson’s tale of two orphaned lovers is a must-read. BEST SCIENCE FICTION: The Red Wing >>>> Jonathan Hickman (“Fantastic Four”) writes a story of fighter pilots in the future who fight their battles not only in the air, but also through time. Art by Nick Pitarra. BEST WESTERN: The Sixth Gun >>>> An Oni Press Western with supernatural horror elements, “The Sixth Gun” follows the path of six cursed guns during the darkest days of the Civil War. Cullen Bunn and Brian Hurtt are the creative team.

BEST HORROR: American Vampire >>>> Also written by Snyder, “American Vampire” follows the exploits of a new breed of “ American Vampire,” who have the ability to feed in the sun. Brazil-born artist Rafael Albuquerque (“Blue Beetle,” “Mondo Urbano”) is a future star. The 1880s outlaw Skinner Sweet and 1920s actress Pearl Jones make their way to Las Vegas circa 1935, then follows Pearl and her husband into the World War II era.

>>>> Some of the greatest Carl Barks Donald Duck comics are being collected in affordable hardcover editions by Fantagraphics. This collection contains “Lost in the Andes” and other Barks stories. These all-ages adventures have been fan favorites for more than 50 years. >>>> This hardcover reprinting Scott Snyder’s run on “Detective Comics” deserves a place on any Bat-fan’s shelf. The new Batman, Dick Grayson, is put

to the test as a series of brutal murders puts him up against one of Gotham City’s oldest evils. A second story, “Hungry City,” is also collected in the hardcover, in which the corpse of a killer whale is found in an upscale Gotham City bank, sparking a deadly new mystery. The collection, with stories from “Detective Comics” Nos. 871-881, is a candidate for best Batman tale of the current decade.

BEST ARCHIVAL REPRINT: Donald Duck: Lost in the Andes

>>>> Writer Jim Ottaviani and artist Leland Myrick recount the life and career of noted physicist Richard P. Feynman in a funny and educational book.

>>>> Kate Beaton takes a humorous trip through history and literature with witty, absurd humor featur-

PAGE 28

>>>> Ed Brubaker (“Captain America”) is one of comics’ finest writers, and among his best books is 2011’s “Criminal: The Last of the Innocent,” a mixture of noir and nostalgia that’s part twisted take on “Archie”-style characters, part dark secrets and murder. Artist Sean Phillips creates compelling stories in two completely different styles for “Innocent.” Riley Richards seems as if he had it all, marrying the hottest girl in town and moving on to the big city. But now, he can’t forget his simpler life in Brookview. He’s willing to do anything to roll back the clock — including murder.
