etail employees, Santa’s elves and film critics work harder during December than at any other time of the year. It is the time when critics are up late watching movies every night, trying to cram in as much viewing as humanly possible in order to build our Top 10 lists for 2011. This weekend, when I was doing interviews for “Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows” (see page 23) and, with a cough and a heave, “New Year’s Eve,” my fellow critics were discussing the rhythms of film releases. Nearly all the great films get released around this time every year so that, when awards season is in full swing, the state and local film critics groups such as the Oklahoma Film Critics Circle and major governing bodies such as the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences can remember them for their year-end lists and golden naked guy statuettes. BY GEORGE LANG LOOKATOKC EDITOR Even so, watch out for those first GLANG@OPUBCO.COM few months of 2012, when the BLOG.NEWSOK.COM/ studios dump bad romantic comSTATICBLOG edies and by-the-book slasher flicks, and it’s always a toss-up as to which one will be scarier. It all starts the second week of January, and always feels like the morning shipment at the day-old bread outlet. Not counting 2010’s yearending great films that didn’t make it to Oklahoma City until the beginning of the year, I believe my first threestar review didn’t come until March this year. But in this issue, Brandy McDonnell offers a great list of movies to see this season, and of course, there is this extremely enjoyable new installment of the “Sherlock Holmes” franchise. In the meantime, your LOOKatOKC editor is up to his neck in celluloid, which isn’t as much fun as it sounds, but it also means that, in an upcoming issue, you get a full listing of the great films that will sustain you in those cold, cold months of the New Year.

Look no further for holiday music

T

he world makes time for Christmas music. Starting in July, store owners feverishly refresh The Weather Channel’s Web site to see if it’s cold enough to start pouring out the same holiday Mariah Carey and Wham! songs I’ve heard 19,000 times. I’m happy to report several Oklahoma musicians are making time for something new. Two recording studios based in Norman recruited local songwriters to create original Christmas songs.

Fowler Volkswagen Presents: A Blackwatch Christmas Jarod Evans and Chad Copelin opened their studio doors for a two-week stretch in September and October to capture a Christmas album. The results were released on 1,000 free vinyl records and a digital download. I was lucky enough to sit in on a lot of these sessions. I watched artists such as Sherree Chamberlain and Ben Kilgore turn rough ideas and lyrics sketched inside of a notebook into actual songs with back-up vocals and string sections. Norman’s Ryan Lindsey delivers the album’s highlight with “I’ll Come Down Your Chimney.” It’s a cozy, warbling tongue-in-cheek song about finding more than one special someone during the holiday season. Think Bing Crosby mixed with “Saturday Night Live.” Samantha Crain’s “Breaking The Ice” is another Christmas love song on the album that gets my props. Her Thunder basketball shout out lyric will warm your stockings for sure. The 2011 Nice People Holiday Companion Nice People owner Chris Harris is ringing in the second year of his label’s Christmas collection with an 11-track release. Harris invited local bands to submit self-recorded holiday tunes to Nice People. In return, he is releasing free cassette tapes and a digital download. Tulsa punk act Lizard Police have a playful tune on the compilation that mixes Christmas classics with lyrics about whiskey milkshakes and a pine tree. Not a bad combination in song form. Penny Hill’s contribution is a thunderous and thoughtful tune. Her lyric, “Keep the present/ just tell me you love me” propels the haunting tune into the darker side of the holiday season. BEER LOVERS

he turkey and stuffing is now well out of your system. The Black Friday apps don’t mean a whole lot now, but your Christmas list is on your brain, your spouse’s brain and your family’s brains. Here’s an idea of what to put on it. It’s a “Nightlife Seeker’s Christmas List.”

For the beer snob of the family, you might think about making them apart of the Beer of the Month Club. This way they can try new beers each month — hopefully some they haven’t tried before. But if you have a homebody to buy for, a Kegerator will do the trick. No beer drinker can resist the mass quantity of cold brew at his or her disposal. You should expect to spend anywhere between $100 and $1,000 on the contraption. After the beer snob has tried all of the brews he/she can possibly drink, they might want to make their own. The super beer geek might like a brewing kit from The Brew Shop Oklahoma City. There are several different brews from which to choose.

CONCERT GOER The avid concert goer is my best friend. We’ll probably end up at the same concert at some point. I know so many people who have received a concert ticket for their birthday or Christmas and have thought it was the best gift ever. So you can be the best gift giver ever by taking them to one of the upcoming shows in Oklahoma. The nearest show coming up is The Flaming Lips, Plastic Ono Band and Neon Indian on New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day. If I could show you my face right now, you’d tell me to calm down about this show. I’ve seen the Lips many times on NYE, but never with two other awesome bands. Speaking of legends, there’s someone coming to Tulsa for the first time in who-knows-how-long: Rogers Waters, co-founder of Pink Floyd. He’ll be performing “The Wall” on May 5. Tickets have been on sale since Nov. 14 so don’t procrastinate. And for musical theater aficionados, “Abba The Concert,” “Mamma Mia!,” and “The Addams Family Musical” will all be at the OKC Civic Center in the next two months.

with hundreds of sweaty people rubbing their grossness all over you and expensive so for the music lover who wants to steer clear of the hassle, think about a music documentary, new albums just out or just awesome memorabilia. “The Twilight Saga Breaking Dawn, Pt. 1” will be out in time for the holidays and features Iron & Wine, Bruno Mars and HardFi, to name a few. I have to admit, they at least have good soundtracks. The Black Keys and Coldplay have new albums out and She & Him have a new Christmas album. Just in time for...well, Christmas. Duh. Music documentaries are being released in droves this season. “George Harrison: Living in the Material World” came out in October, and is about the life of “quiet Beatle.” The DVD of 1992 documentary “1991: The Year Punk Broke” came out in September and features 90s music shapers like Nirvana, Sonic Youth, The Ramones and more. Other ideas are vintage posters, kick ass headphones, and a plethora of new music books.

FOODIES In a world where coupons are no longer embarrassing and a way of life, think about a Groupon, Living Social deal or whatever online coupon company you prefer for the person in your life’s favorite eatery if it’s available. Something that’s always available is a Whole Foods Market gift card. It’s brand new and for as packed as the parking lot is, I’d venture to guess a lot of people are frequenting it now. Something that I want for Christmas, if anyone out there would like to add this to their shopping list, is “Good Eats 3: The Later Years.” It just came out in September and features more than 200 recipes and extra fun entertainment like a yeast puppet kit. The celebrity cookbooks don’t stop there. Jamie Oliver, Guy Fieri and Cake Boss Buddy Valastro all have new books.

There’s a short list of ideas for your friend, family member, loved one, or coworker for Christmas. Remember, if you want to add to that shopping list, pick up “Good Eats 3” and gift it “To Lacey.” Happy shopping.

‘TALK THAT TALK’ – RIHANNA

alk That Talk,” the sixth album from Rihanna in seven years, sounds much like last year’s “Loud” — in essence, it is her second curtain call for “Rated R,” the substantial, emotional 2009 album that is starting to feel like Rihanna’s highwater mark. Compared to “Rated R,” “Talk That Talk” is distressingly lightweight and repetitive, built on tired-sounding musical beds reminiscent of 1990s techno — there’s way too much “untce, untce, untce” going on for anything memorable to present itself. Even a Jay-Z guest rap on the title track feels tossed off and perfunctory, as if he were passing the studio and made up some weak boasts on the fly.

<<<

PAGE 12

I

The repetition on “We Found Love” should have been the tipoff: “We fell in love in a hopeless place” might be a good jumping off point for a song, but then Rihanna never builds on that theme, repeating it a half-dozen times in the chorus. Rihanna always seemed like she was aiming to be more than a mere club diva, but with “We Found Love,” “Where Have You Been” and opening track “You Da One,” in which she stretches out the word “time” into six stuttering syllables, she is veering close to selfparody-arody-arody. Of all the egregious miscalculations on “Talk That Talk,” the worst comes when Rihanna gets down to what sounds like business on “Birthday Cake,” an absolutely filthy collection of salacious pillow talk powered by a stutter-step beat from The-Dream. But then it fades out at the 1:17 mark, killing a potentially good thing before

it gets a chance to live. Even a straightforward ballad such as “We All Want Love” sounds underdeveloped, though Rihanna partially redeems herself by singing out on the otherwise simplistic “Drunk On Love.” The knock on Rihanna since her 2005 debut is that she often sounds more like a production instrument

than a genuine singer, a marketable sound that could be programmed into any musical sequence. On “Talk That Talk,” an album in which none of the titular talk says anything interesting about the artist or her life, that criticism is ringing more true than ever. — George Lang, LookatOKC Editor

‘VOWS’ – KIMBRA

ith Amy Winehouse’s death this summer and Lily Allen’s motherhood-related semiretirement, the advent of New Zealand’s Kimbra Johnson comes at just the right time. The 21-year-old singer-songwriter’s vocal dexterity and pleasing weirdness feels like a gene-splice of those two deeply missed performers, with some of Lykke Li’s cerebral depth thrown in to destabilize the compound. Just a few years ago, her YouTube performances seemed geared toward earthy mainstream pop, but Kimbra’s Australasian debut, “Vows,” demonstrates that she clearly wanted more than to merely be New Zealand’s Colbie Caillat. “Vows” is a richly rewarding first album, and while it is only available on import, it is worth the search. Amid a flurry of shouts, rhythmic

hand claps and choral vocalese, Kimbra begins “Vows” with “Settle Down,” in which her plans for a relationship seem a little too mapped out in the early stages. She goes from sweet to vaguely threatening over the course of “Settle Down,” spiking it all with stratospheric display of vocal range in the chorus — not in an “American Idol” grandstanding way but more like, “How did she do that?” Kimbra then segues into the sugary “Cameo Lover,” a gorgeous Northern Soul exercise accented with crashing, Phil Spectorstyle symphonic grandeur. Once heard, it would take a drill to get it out of most heads. Little about “Vows” sounds like the easy way to listeners’ hearts. Kimbra’s ballads often take the shape of dark sambas such as “Good Intent” and her haunting, partially a cappella cover of Nina Simone’s “Plain Gold Ring,” but then

her jazz-soul delivery on the swinging funk track “Call Me” gets its hooks in immediately. She has the vocal chops to pull it all off, from the all-important lead vocal to the complex harmonies darting around in the background. “Vows” will not be released domestically, however, the “Settle Down” EP LOOKATOKC.COM

The galloping epic provides an intriguing contrast to the wistful country road ode “Horseshoe,” which in turn diverges dramatically from the hard-edged country-blues rocker “Black Diamond.” The Tecumseh native then goes gospel on “Hell and Highwater,” complete with big-voiced backup singers, bouncy bass and hopeful horns. With the folksy “Old Crow,” McClure shows he’s not too proud to pick up a few tricks from one of the group’s he’s mentored, namely The Damn Quails. While not as showy musically, “Other Side of Midnight” effectively explores the heartache of lost dreams, while “Distractions” woozily taps into the zeitgeist of our overly busy times. ‘Red Hot’ and coming to town

he Red Hot Chili Peppers have announced that they are adding two dates to the North American leg of their “I’m With You” World Tour, including a March 15 show atChesapeake Energy Arena. Tickets to the Oklahoma City show will go on sale at 10 a.m. Sat., Dec. 10 at Ticketmaster.com, all Ticketmaster locations, including participating Homeland stores and by phone at (800) 745-3000. Ticket prices are $57.50 and $37.50. The band is touring in support of its new album “I’m With You,” which this week earned a Grammy nomination for best rock album. Released in August, the band’s 10th studio effort debuted at No. 2 on the multi-genre Billboard 200 charts. The first single, “The Adventures of Rain Dance Maggie” topped Billboard’s rock and alternative song charts, and the second single, “Monarchy of Roses,” has broken into the top 15 on both charts after six weeks. “I’m With You” is the band’s first album since 2006’s “Stadium Arcadium” as well as the first to feature new guitarist Josh Klinghoffer after John Frusciante left the group in 2009. Likewise, the new tour is the first outing for the rockers since their huge “Stadium Arcadium” trek ended in 2007. Currently performing in Europe, the rockers announced earlier this week that they would launch the North American leg of the world tour Jan. 25 in Charlotte, N.C. So far only eight U.S. dates have been announced, with more North American shows expected to be revealed soon. Formed in 1983 in Los Angeles, the Red Hot Chili Peppers were one of the barrier-busting bands of the ‘80s, coupling a dynamic stage show with a sound fusing funk and punk rock, along with hip-hop and psychedelic rock flourishes. ‘MY WEEK WITH MARILYN’

Rating: R (Language) Running time: 1 hour, 41 minutes Starring: Michelle Williams, Kenneth Branagh, Dougray Scott, Julia Ormond, Judi Dench, Eddie Redmayne

**

Williams is radiant in ‘Marilyn’ role

T

he breathy voice, the girlish cadence, the flirty demeanor, even the slightest facial gestures — Michelle Williams gets many of the details right and gives a thoroughly committed performance as Marilyn Monroe in “My Week With Marilyn.” But as good as Williams is and as devoted as she clearly was to embodying this woman fully, you never forget you’re watching an extended impression of the pop culture icon. A lot of that has to do with the fact that this is indeed a legend she’s playing, and it’s difficult to take mythology and turn it into something tangible and true. And the script from Adrian Hodges, based on memoirs by Colin Clark, doesn’t offer Williams much substance or subtlety with which to work. The Monroe she’s given functions in only two gears: Either she’s the dazzling, charismatic sex symbol of lore, or she’s stoned, insecure and in constant need of coddling. Surely there was more complexity to this woman who continues to fascinate nearly four decades after her death. That kind of reductive approach unfortunately pre-

vails throughout from director Simon Curtis, a British television veteran making his feature filmmaking debut. Laurence Olivier comes off as cartoonishly arrogant and vain, despite being played by Kenneth Branagh, an actor of great depth. The Method acting technique that Monroe applied is a repeated target of jokes, as if it were some sort of flimsy, fringy philosophy (and Zoe Wanamaker, as acting coach Paula Strasberg, comes off as a caricature of a yenta). One of the least developed characters is the one who is central to this story and serves as our conduit. He’s Colin Clark (Eddie Redmayne), a star-struck and personalityfree assistant on “The Prince and the Showgirl,” which Monroe was shooting in England in 1956. Colin comes from money but wants to prove himself by working his way up from the bottom in the film world. Monroe, by contrast, is the most famous person on the planet. Despite her celebrity and new marriage to Arthur Miller (Dougray Scott), she desperately wants to be taken seriously. Even though this picture is a light romantic comedy, it gives her a chance to work with Olivier as both her director and co-star. She is, of course, paralyzed with

LOOKATOKC.COM

fear. Olivier’s wife, Vivien Leigh (played with grace and candor by Julia Ormond) tries to encourage her. Another of Monroe’s co-stars, the far more seasoned and distinguished Dame Sybil Thorndike (Judi Dench), reaches out to her with patience and kindness. Monroe also seeks comfort in Colin, of all people — according to him, at least. This is, after all, his story. She keeps drawing him closer, which becomes easier when Miller returns to the United States, even as all her various hangers-on view him as a threat and try to push him away. Before the development of this relationship, though, the film offers an amusing (though not exactly novel) peek at the stir Monroe’s presence caused in the rural area surrounding Pinewood Studios west of London. The actual filmmaking process, especially with the involvement of such esteemed figures, is always fascinating to watch. Or at least it should be. Like the depiction of Monroe herself, the film as a whole rings hollow with a kind of airy, unsatisfying emptiness. — Associated Press

In Matt’s new reality, the palm trees and balmy breeze scarcely matter, because his family is in meltdown and half the Hawaiian population hates him. Matt is a successful businessman living on Oahu, and as the chief trustee of a family trust controlling a verdant swath of unspoiled coastline, he stands to make himself and his extended family rich beyond reason. He has to sign off on the deal, and his relations are counting on him to do, if not the right thing, then certainly the most lucrative thing. But Matt has a much bigger problem with his immediate family, never mind the other descendants. His wife, Elizabeth (Patricia Hastie), was severely injured in a boating accident and is on life support. It is his duty to quell the behavioral problems now percolating to the surface in his 10-year-old daughter, Scottie (Amara Miller), and corral his already out-of-control teenager, Alexandra (the superb Shailene Woodley, a long way off from “The Secret Life of the American Teenager”). All told, he’s in bad shape, but then Matt learns that Elizabeth was having an affair, sneaking around with a

This revelation sends Matt on a frantic search for answers that won’t make him happy but will at least leave him well-informed, with Alexandra, Scottie and Alexandra’s bonehead boyfriend Sid (Nick Krause) in tow. This is one of Clooney’s finest performances, and with the revelatory Woodley and superb supporting turns from Judy Greer, Robert Forster and especially Beau Bridges as a descendant who could, in so many ways, be Jeff Lebowski’s older brother, “The Descendants” is spectacular trouble in paradise. — George Lang, LookatOKC Editor

‘HUGO’

Rating: PG (Mild thematic material, some action/peril and smoking) Running time: 2 hours, 7 minutes Starring: Asa Butterfield, Chloe Grace Moretz, Ben Kingsley, Sacha Baron Cohen.

stars

Scorcese paints magical picture in ‘Hugo’

“H

ugo” might seem like a departure point for Martin Scorsese, a director who rarely steps out of his tough, R-rated cinematic neighborhood and, up to this quite wondrous film, never directed a movie that speaks to all ages in the modern language of computerassisted filmmaking. But “Hugo” is illuminated by many of the director’s long-held passions, and as his first foray into 3-D, it is mastery of the form, an integration of the technology into the film rather than an attention-getting scheme. Based on Brian Selznick’s 2007 young readers’ novel “The Invention of Hugo Cabret,” “Hugo” follows the saga of Hugo Cabret (Asa Butterfield), a young orphan living in Paris’ Gare Montparnasse train station in the early 1920s. His late father (Jude Law) was a master clockmaker who maintained the ornate, suspended clocks of the station and spent free time trying to restore an automaton, a human-shaped robot that ran on clock machinery and was thrown out by one of the local museums. But after his father’s death, Hugo was left to an alcoholic uncle (Ray Winstone) and forced to live within the walls of the station, stealing and foraging food from the vendors and dodging the comically self-important station inspector (Sacha Baron Cohen).

Hugo attracts the ire of Papa Georges (Ben Kingsley), a bitter old man who runs a small toy shop in the station. Georges forces Hugo to empty his pockets, the contents of which include a notebook containing his father’s plans for restoring the automaton. Georges keeps everything, but his young daughter Isabelle (Chloe Grace Moretz) takes pity on Hugo. Isabelle enthuses constantly on literature, and the two children form a bond as they unravel the mystery of the automaton and the history of Papa Georges. First, behold the technical marvel of “Hugo,” a film in which 3-D technology and computer-generated graphics serve to create a historic Paris of the mind’s eye, a place that feels alternately unreal and nearly tangible. Scorsese deploys 3-D in order to draw the audience into Hugo’s world rather than pushing it toward them, and the expanse of Gare Montparnasse and the city surrounding seem realistic and utterly magical. While watching “Hugo,” it is difficult to avoid thinking of the adventurous failure of Robert Zemeckis’ past decade of motioncapture filmmaking: Had Zemeckis only employed real humans within his digital creations, films such as “The Polar Express” and “A Christmas Carol” might have attained the wonder that pervades Scorsese’s “Hugo.” Scorsese’s active campaigning for film preservation powers one of the key subplots: Papa Georges’ past. As in the book, Kingsley’s character is Georges Melies, the

LOOKATOKC.COM

magician-turned-filmmaker who invented special effects in filmmaking and is best known for his short film, “A Trip to the Moon.” World War I devastated Melies’ filmmaking operation, and he was forced to sell most of his film prints, many of which were melted down and made into shoe heels. Kingsley, who greatly resembles Melies, is typically wonderful here, as is Moretz, whose expressiveness exhibits why the young actress is so busy working with A-list directors these days. And yet, “Hugo” is imperfect, padded to an excessive length by flights of fancy involving two courtships: one between train station regulars Monsieur Frick and Madame Emilie (Richard Griffiths and Frances de la Tour) and the station inspector’s awkward wooing of florist Lisette (Emily Mortimer). They mostly constitute wayward elements in an otherwise captivating film. Scorsese obsesses over details. In “Hugo,” the title character has a dream in which a train crashes through a buffer and plummets into the street. This actually happened in 1895, and Scorsese’s depiction resembles photography of the incident. This might not matter to most people who see “Hugo,” and only a fraction may have heard of Melies, but these elements all contribute to a film that finds its true magic not in something otherworldly, but in the creativity found in great minds. — George Lang, LookatOKC Editor

T

Newcomers to the franchise and fans who adored “The Muppet Show” or the best of the previous film outings will be thoroughly charmed by the musical puppets’ latest on-screen adventure. It may seem a bit silly to deem “The Muppets” one of the most entertaining and vital films of the year, but the movie represents so much more than just another Hollywood reboot of a venerable franchise. Kermit the Frog, Miss Piggy and their zany pals have always used sophisticated yet innocent humor to entertain, and in these cynical, less-than-civilized times, such wit is more than refreshing. It’s practically revolutionary. The Muppets haven’t been on the silver screen since 1999’s largely ignored “Muppets From Space,” and with the exception of a few well-received YouTube performances, Henson’s creations have mostly remained dormant since becoming part of the Disney empire in 2004. Stoller hold nothing back, pouring all their affection and enthusiasm for “The Muppets” into the new movie. Along with co-writing the script and executive producing the film, Segel plays Gary, an affable but immature denizen of Smalltown, USA, whose younger brother Walter happens to be a Muppet and a huge fan of TV’s “The Muppet Show.” Gary and his girlfriend, Mary (Amy Adams), the town’s popular shop teacher, are planning an exciting 10th anniversary trip to Los Angeles. She is a bit crestfallen when Gary decides to invite Walter along, but still hopes the getaway will include a long-awaited marriage proposal. Naturally, the first sight Walter wants to see is Muppet Studios, but when the three arrive, they find that the Muppets have broken up and the theater is crumbling. Walter overhears villainous oil baron Tex Richman (Chris Cooper) plotting to seize the studio, raze it and drill for the recently discovered oil under it. Saving the Muppets old stomping grounds will take $10 million. Along with the reluctant but still game Mary, Gary and Walter track down Kermit the Frog, who has shut himself away in a Bel-Air mansion. Kermit knows the only way the Muppets can raise $10 million is to put on a show. It won’t be easy because the Muppets have gone their

separate ways. Thankfully, the Muppets are still performed by actual puppeteers and haven’t been replaced by computergenerated effects. The new movie not only nails the Muppets’ sense of humor, it captures their effervescent musical spirit, especially on the irresistibly catchy theme “Life’s a Happy Song.” Even the inclusion of Starship’s irritatingly ubiquitous ‘80s hit “We Built This City” can’t diminish the nostalgic thrill of old favorites “Rainbow Connection” and “Mah Na Mah Na,” the emotional weight of Kermit’s ballad “Pictures in My Head” and the sheer hilarity of the new Muppet Barbershop Quartet rendition of Nirvana’s “Smells Like Teen Spirit,” featuring Beaker’s familiar “mee meeps.” The existential ode “Man or Muppet” features the best of the film’s star cameos. Although the movie’s villain isn’t developed enough and the horde of fuzzy characters becomes a bit overwhelming, “The Muppets” doesn’t just coast on sentimentality or familiarity. It’s time for a new generation to meet the Muppets, since they are starring in the best family movie of the year. — Brandy McDonnell, Entertainment Writer

Holmes and Watson face down Moriarty in ‘Game of Shadows’

ircumstances changed quickly for Robert Downey Jr., because in a few short years, he went from proving he could handle the responsibility of single movie roles to being trusted with valuable, high-stakes franchises. With “Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows” reserving space at the top of the box office for the holidays and the actor leading two series with one character in “Iron Man” and “The Avengers,” Downey wears the pressure as comfortably as the European-cut blazer he rocked at a recent “Holmes” press conference at Beverly Hills’ Peninsula Hotel. But while Downey feels comfortable with the level of faith placed in him these days, he still worries about getting the details right. With 2009’s “Sherlock Holmes,” Downey, co-star Jude Law and director Guy Ritchie gave Arthur Conan Doyle’s Victorian sleuth an adrenaline shot, and the obvious challenge is to maintain the energy on the second time out.

Noomi Rapace, Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law.

“Well, after the first one worked out pretty good, we were pretty much doing the press tour and talking about things we would like to improve, other directions we could go, blah blah blah,” Downey said. “And then there is the reality of doing it. Anybody who’s ever been involved in making the second part to a first that worked ... there should be a whole online support team for this. “And we happened through it. There’s so much to learn, and the greatest disguise was us disguising ourselves as consummate, by-the-numbers professionals when we are, in fact, all kind of incredibly eccentric,” he said. But eccentricity is the magic fuel that makes “Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows,”

opening Dec. 16, hum like a well-oiled steam engine. In this installment, Holmes and Watson must deal directly with archnemesis Professor Moriarty, played by Jared Harris of “Mad Men,” as he attempts to engineer an evil monopoly based on pitting segments of Europe against one another for the foreseeable future. Downey said that Harris acclimated to the spirit of things, as did Noomi Rapace, who joins the cast as Sim, a fortune-telling gypsy with finely tuned survival instincts. Downey said that while Harris generally thrives on scripted material, he quickly learned that Law, Ritchie and Downey keep things loose. “Jude and I are pretty close, but Guy and I are practically brothers, which makes things really

interesting,” he said. “There have been times when I’ve wanted to lop off his head with a machete. “But it’s only because I love you so much,” Downey said, turning to the director. “You know what I mean?” “Yes...” Ritchie said, dragging the syllable out for maximum effect. “There’s no one you love more, is there? Think about it.” But even with a spirit of spontaneous creativity in play, Downey said that maintaining a sense of balance is important to the overall success of the “Holmes” films. He is the star, and the success of “A Game of Shadows” rests greatly on how he performs his elementary duties, but Downey said that it cannot just be The Robert LOOKATOKC.COM

Downey Jr. Show. That recent rise in professional responsibility Downey now shoulders must extend to Holmes’ originator, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, and to his fellow actors and collaborators. “You just keep Doyle in mind — I respect the guy more and more,” he said. “I think the other thing is, what’s required — particular if you’re in a central position — is you have to let go. “You have to let go of the things that are darling to you, you have to take the focus off yourself and put it on the shape of the scene and what everyone else needs,” Downey said. “You have to give people something to write music to, so you’re not just running your mouth all the time.”

ou probably don’t need me to tell you that the holidays are the busiest as well as the most wonderful time of the year. For film fans and critics, the last few weeks of the year are packed with much more than Christmas shopping, cookie baking and merrymaking. For those of us who watch and review movies either for a living or as a hobby, we spend the holiday season bringing on more than turkey, dressing and pumpkin pie; we’ve got Oscar bait, period dramas and seasonal comedies to devour as well. Since just looking at last week’s all-inclusive list of movies opening in Oklahoma City this season was sort of overwhelming — believe me, it was exhausting to organize and write, too — this week I’m simplifying your holiday movie guide in tried-and-true fashion. In that spirit, allow me to present my Top 10 must-see holiday movies list: Story Brandy McDonnell, Entertainment Writer

1. “The Muppets.” (Now playing) I’ve said it before but it’s worth repeating: It’s time to meet the Muppets again. Whether you grew up with the lovably witty felt friends, have children or just possess a youthful heart, see the comeback film that reunites Kermit the Frog, Miss Piggy, Fozzie Bear and the rest in an effort to save Muppet Studios from destruction at the hands of a villainous oil baron (Chris Cooper). Jason Segel (who also co-writes and produces) and Amy Adams lend their song-and-dance skills to the new movie, which co-stars a new Muppet named Walter. This movie just might end up on my end-of-year top 10 list; yes, it contains that much sheer cinematic joy.

2. “Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows.” (Dec. 16) I’m just going to shoot straight here: If in the year 2011 you consider yourself a cinephile and you don’t love Robert Downey Jr., there is something wrong with you. The terrific comedic actor reprises his role as the world’s most famous detective, and Jude Law returns to play his loyal sidekick Dr. Watson in Guy Ritchie’s sequel to his 2009 holiday blockbuster. I’m a Ritchie fan dating back to his 1998 feature debut with “Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels,” and Downey and Law had remarkable chemistry in the first Holmes installment. Plus, in the sequel, we really get to meet Moriarty. When the Crown Prince of Austria is found dead, police Inspector Lestrade (Eddie Marsan) believes the royal committed suicide, but Holmes deduces that the prince was murdered as part of a sinister plot designed by brilliant and evil Professor Moriarty (Jared Harris). Rachel McAdams, Stephen Fry and Noomi Rapace co-star.

3. “The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo.” (Dec. 21) Speaking of Noomi Rapace, it was only David Fincher’s impeccable skill at making dark, taut thrillers that kept me from outright rejecting the notion of a Hollywood adaptation of the late Stieg Larsson’s international best-selling crime thriller. Rapace did more than portray cyberpunk Lisbeth Salander in the stellar Swedish film version; she fully embodied the compellingly complex character. But for his rendition, Fincher reunited with Rooney Mara, who stole the show from the rest of the sublime cast with her small role in “The Social Network,” and from the look of the trailers, she boldly transformed herself to play Lisbeth. The remake also stars Daniel Craig, Robin Wright and Christopher Plummer and features music from Nine Inch Nails frontman Trent Reznor and his writing partner Atticus Ross, who won an Oscar for their “Social Network” score.

4. “The Adventures of Tintin.” (Dec. 21) Three-time Oscar winner Steven Spielberg tries his hand at 3-D motion-capture animation with a treasure hunt tale based on Belgian artist Georges “Herge” Remi’s classic comic series that dates to 1929. Jamie Bell, Daniel Craig, Simon Pegg, Nick Frost, Cary Elwes and mo-cap master Andy Serkis star in the action-packed adventure, which is already a huge hit in Europe. “Lord of the Rings” wizard Peter Jackson not only produced, he has already committed to directing the sequel, once he completes his two-film adaptation of J.R.R. Tolkien’s “The Hobbit.” In its relatively short history, mo-cap has proved a tricky cinematic technique to pull off effectively, but honestly, who better could you have helming such an epic project than Spielberg and Jackson?

5. “War Horse.” (Dec. 25) Steven Spielberg again pairs a potential blockbuster with a smaller drama (think back to 2005 when he did the same with “War of the Worlds” and “Munich”) in following “The Adventures of Tintin” with a World War I epic told through the journey of a cavalry steed and his young former owner (Jeremy Irvine). His adaptation of Michael Morpurgo’s acclaimed children’s novel features fine British actors Emily Watson, David Thewlis and Tom Hiddleston. Quick, name a current Hollywood director who does the war epic better than Spielberg. Yeah, I couldn’t think of one either.

6. “Hugo.” (Now playing) Some movies are just made to be seen on the big-screen, and Oscar-winning director Martin Scorsese has given us one with his 3-D filmmaking debut. Over the past year, I’ve increasingly avoided 3-D whenever possible and watched it reluctantly when it wasn’t, but in his usual masterful way, Scorsese elevates the format. Although the runtime may be a bit long for little ones, “Hugo” is based on Brian Selznick’s much-admired 2007 junior novel, “The Invention of Hugo Cabret,” and offers an ideal opportunity to introduce your grade-schooler to high-quality, live-action filmmaking. Set in the 1930s, the family-friendly mystery stars Asa Butterfield (“The Boy in the Striped Pajamas”), along with Jude Law, Emily Mortimer, Christopher Lee, Ben Kingsley, Sacha Baron Cohen and Chloe Moretz, in the tale of an orphan boy who lives in the walls of a Paris train station.

7. “The Descendants.” (Now playing) Set in Hawaii, the comedic drama stars the always wonderful George Clooney as a wealthy land baron but distant husband and father who must re-evaluate his life after his wife is badly injured in a boating accident off Waikiki. Not only is the film garnering big-time awards buzz, especially for Clooney, it’s the first film writer-director Alexander Payne has made since his Oscar-winning 2004 cinematic road trip “Sideways.”

I

LOOKATOKC.COM

P R E V I E W 8. “We Bought a Zoo.” (Dec. 23) As the title suggests, the comedic drama stars Matt Damon as a single father who decides to give his family a new life by buying a ramshackle zoo for them to refurbish and reopen. The movie co-stars Scarlett Johansson, Thomas Haden Church, Patrick Fugit and Elle Fanning. Based on former newspaper columnist Benjamin Mee’s memoir, it is writer-director Cameron Crowe’s first feature since 2005’s “Elizabethtown.” (He made the music documentaries “The Union,” about the making of Oklahoma native Leon Russell and Elton John’s album of the same name,” and “Pearl Jam Twenty” in the interim.) I’ve got a brand-new box of tissues, and I’m ready to see what Crowe has come up with this time.

9. “Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy.” (Dec. 16) Did you know Gary Oldman has never, ever been nominated for an Oscar? Nope, not even a supporting nod for “The Professional.” It will be interesting to see whether he can finally snag a nomination with the lead role in director Tomas Alfredson’s (“Let the Right One In”) adaptation of John le Carre’s seminal 1974 espionage novel. The Cold War thriller stars Oldman as George Smiley, a former spy who is pressed back into service to lead the hunt for a Soviet mole within Britain’s Secret Intelligence Service. Colin Firth, Tom Hardy, John Hurt and Mark Strong also are among fine British actors cast.

10. “Mission: Impossible — Ghost Protocol.” (Dec. 16 in IMAX; Dec. 21 in all theaters) I don’t recall seeing a “Mission: Impossible” movie since I viewed the first installment in the theater back in 1996, but I’m hoping to catch this one and maybe even spring for IMAX tickets. Why my change of heart? Animation allstar Brad Bird makes the move to live action as the helmer for the franchise’s fourth film, and I have high hopes that he will bring the same flair for spy suspense that won him an Oscar for “The Incredibles” to Tom Cruise’s latest outing as Ethan Hunt.

‘THE L E G E ND OF Z E L DA : S K YWA RD S WO R D ’

Latest ‘Zelda’ gives you more control than ever

I

t has been a brutal year for fans of the Wii. Other publishers have stopped bringing AAA games to Nintendo’s low-powered console. The best-reviewed new game on the system, “Xenoblade Chronicles,” has inexplicably been withheld from the United States. Nintendo itself seems ready to move on to its forthcoming Wii U. So “The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword” ($49.99) looks like the last gasp for the once unstoppable Wii. Is it worth dusting off and plugging in your old machine to play it? Absolutely — although it’s not quite the masterpiece Nintendo has been promising. The core elements of the 25-year-old “Zelda” franchise remain. Once again, you are Link, a teenager who’s destined for great things. As usual, your friend Zelda disappears and you must run to her rescue. Your journey takes you through a series of fantastic locations — including, most notably, a series of dungeons filled with brain-twisting puzzles. Still, there are plenty of tweaks to the formula. “Skyward Sword” begins in Skyloft, a tiny town floating high above the clouds. Each character is master of a “loftwing,” a bird you can fly to the other rocks floating around Skyloft. While out on a joyride, Zelda is attacked by a tornado and dragged to the land below, where most of the action takes place. There are three major areas to explore: the grassy Faron Woods, the fiery Eldin Volcano and the desolate Lanayru Desert. Each is populated with a healthy variety of native creatures, some helpful, some vicious. There’s plenty of sword-swinging combat, but that’s

not the emphasis — the real challenge is figuring out how to get through the mazelike environments to their central temples.

The “Skyward Sword” temples feature some of the most devious puzzles ever conjured up by the “Zelda” team. The desert area, for example, has switches

that send parts of it back in time, to when it was a working factory. Some machines are useful, but after you get zapped by a guard robot you’ll wish you’d left the electricity off. Besides your sword, controlled by swinging the motion-sensing Wii remote, you have a variety of gadgets, including the reliable old grappling hook and slingshot. The most versatile of the new devices is the beetle, a flying drone that can pick up bombs and drop them on enemies. “Skyward Sword” is filled with “aha!” moments when you suddenly figure out how to use those devices to get past a seemingly insurmountable obstacle. It’s an unusually rewarding game mechanic, emphasizing logic and strategy over reflexes, and the devilish puzzles make this “Zelda” chapter well worth your time. With 60-plus hours of playtime, this is the longest game in the “Zelda” franchise, but not all of it is as rewarding as the dungeon sequences. It takes several hours before Link finally gets to the surface, where almost all the action is. In between dungeons you have to keep returning to Skyloft, home to a bunch of dimwits who send you on tedious fetch quests while you’re trying to prevent the apocalypse. There’s an awful lot to do in “Skyward Sword,” but about onethird of it feels like filler. The boss battles against the most powerful monsters range, similarly, from boring to spectacular. The bad ones essentially involve slashing at the enemy until he surrenders, but the good ones make imaginative use of the skills Link has learned. One sequence, which involves rescuing a parasite-infested sky whale, is “Zelda” at its most exhilarating. Such moments go a long way toward reawakening the sense of wonder common to the best Nintendo games of the last quarter-century. And despite some dull stretches, “Skyward Sword” delivers enough of those moments to make it one of the most satisfying chapters in the “Zelda” canon. The Associated Press

hef Clay Falkner is a softspoken fellow not quick to share what’s on his mind. But once he enters the kitchen at Signature Grill, which he and his wife opened a little more than three years ago, it becomes clear that food is what was on his mind. Since cooking is his preferred medium for expression, he chooses to use it rather than words. Once you begin to taste the food he creates, the story of a single-minded chef on the rise unfolds. Growing up, Falkner chose the kitchen while a lot of boys his age were going home after to school to play touch football. While they drew plays in the dirt, Falkner planned menus for his family. “I started cooking with my mom when I was about 10 years old,” Falkner said. “Pretty soon, I started making dinner for the family.” By the time he started high school, Falkner had no doubt what his vocation would be, which made high school that much more difficult. That is, until he was able to enroll in classes at Francis TuttleCareerTech through the ProStart program. “I wouldn’t have graduated from high school,” Falkner said without hesitation. Falkner moved straight from high school into some of the city’s bestknown kitchens, including Tommy’s Italian, before the move to Deep Fork Grill. Falkner, 33, spent 5½ years in the kitchen at Deep Fork Grill, where he developed a reputation as one of the city’s most promising young chefs. As he nears four years at Signature Grill, at 1317 E Danforth Road, tucked in a nook in Kickingbird Square, Falkner is on the verge of graduating from promising chef to a spot among the metroarea’s best.

Making an impression The coronation is under way at Signature Grill. The low-lit, intimate dining room oozes romance. Falkner’s passion warms the room, mixing classic Italian

and French techniques and producing a menu dotted with classic presentations of seafood and chops and modern flair. In his small kitchen, which can be seen through glass from the dining room, Falkner quietly wields pans and dishes with the kind of cool confidence Clint Eastwood spun six-shooters in spaghetti Westerns. Falkner’s food hits the target with equal accuracy, sending palates straight to heaven. The duck confit in puff pastry highlights the appetizer menu. This rich, decadent dish mixes savory and bright flavors with lush and crisp texture — the perfect combination of bold and subtle. I also tried the steamed littleneck clams with saffron in a yellow curry-roasted tomato-white wine butter sauce, which were a slice and slurp of heaven. The Portobello mushrooms with spinach and roasted tomatoes on grilled baguette with basil pesto, goat cheese and balsamic reduction is inspired. From the entree menu, I tried Chilean sea bass, which was crisp on the surface and flaky in the center. The butter and roasted tomato sauce was a perfect balance of rich and bright. The sides were Bacon-Crimini Risotto and Spinach with Oyster Mushrooms, which were impossible to stop eating. He also seared me a scallop to a perfection rarely seen this far from salt water. The menu also contains prime steaks, all-natural chicken, fresh seafood, duck and pork tenderloin. Entrees are served with two sides, including the aforementioned risotto and spinach plus scalloped potatoes, tomato stuffed with goat cheese and spinach, grilled asparagus and heart of palm, and broccoli with white cheddar truffle fondue.

CHOKERS

an elegant adornment

Linda Miller | For The Oklahoman

Dangling chains and tiny pendants are getting some competition from a classic that’s wrapping its way around women’s necks. Chokers never go out of style, but at times they are more prominent. This could be their season. Designers showed them on the runway in February, and celebrities started sporting the look almost immediately. Don’t confuse these chokers with some of the ’90s black velvet or studded versions that were cinched around the middle of your neck. Today’s styles are more sophisticated and flattering. “One of the great things about choker pieces is the versatility they provide,” said Alex Bratton, fashion director at On a Whim at Classen Curve. “Obviously they can be worn alone, but even more importantly this season, they can be layered with pieces already in your jewelry wardrobe, such as your grandmother’s costume opera-length pearls or a longer rhinestone or jet necklace. With the holidays around the corner, it’s always about the glitz and glamour, and what better way to bring some excitement to an old top, sweater or dress than by adding a piece of bling. The great thing about chokers is that they are great for every body type and necklace.” Yes, even women with full faces and short necks can wear chokers. Simply choose a style that’s flattering, such as a bib of multiple strands with a shorter piece that sits near the collarbone and longer chains or a drop that will visually lengthen the neck. One tip: Avoid heavy choker necklaces that add bulk. And choose tops, blouses and dresses with a flattering V-neck to elongate the neck, as well. A choker that sits high on the neck tends to look graceful and dramatic, even regal, which may explain their popularity dating back to the 16th century and the days of Queen Elizabeth. Queens and princesses through the ages have worn chokers, including Princess Diana, who received a choker made of emeralds and diamonds as a wedding gift from Queen Elizabeth II. Diana wore the necklace in 1984 at a charity event in Australia. “Chokers have been truly a classic from the time of Queen Elizabeth to the quintessential Audrey Hepburn movie, ‘Breakfast at Tiffany’s,’ featuring her in that pearl necklace,” said Cindi Shelby, owner of Ruth Meyers in Nichols Hills Plaza. “Nothing is more elegant, classic and timeless” than a pearl choker, she said. “Plus, it can be really sexy.”
